I made this sound collage in early 2013, nearly a decade ago now, and listening back to it recently I can hear the early seeds of techniques I use in Sound Propositions. My friend Ian Stone Grey was producing a beautiful audio series called Portmanteau at that time, and he included a piano composition of mine in one episode. I was inspired to create some collages of my own that veered further away from music without becoming narrative. A Portmanteau of sorts. Some treated field-recordings. Howlin Wolf. Federico Campagna on Novara Media. Gilles Deleuze on the ABCs. A phased stereo tape loop. Some edits from Bob Ostertag's Sooner or Later. —- Sound Propositions is written, recorded, mixed, and produced by Joseph Sannicandro. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/soundpropositions/support
Bob Ostertag published his book, Sex Science Self: A Social History of Estrogen, Testosterone, and Identity in 2016. At the time, few people took much notice. Six years later, however, this book is causing a stir among gender critical circles and provoking considerable thought and discussion. Today, Bob Ostertag expands on the book, which explores the way pharmaceutical companies have been marketing testosterone as the essence of manhood and estrogen as the essence of womanhood. Pioneering physicians have also been looking long and hard for a condition, even if they have to fabricate one, for which these hormones offer a solution. Bob's work raises important questions about the beliefs people hold about these substances and what those substances mean for their personal identity. And of course, these beliefs are changing rapidly as society expands its understanding of gender identity, for better or worse. Bob also reminds us that no aspect of history should be off limits for exploration. Studying the history of hormones, in and of itself, can be upsetting to people who hold strong beliefs about them. Nevertheless, knowing this history is important for anyone curious about the intersection between medicine and identity. Bob's writing style is powerful, witty, and gripping. As you'll see, he is a very thoughtful and cautious conversationalist. Towards the end of the discussion, Bob also raises some challenges to me and Stella about our show, and how some of our guests frame the biological or organic determinants of sexuality and identity. This conversation gave us much to think about and we will continue exploring these ideas in subsequent episodes. So without further delay, here's our discussion with Bob Ostertag. Links & Resources: Sex Science Self: A Social History of Estrogen, Testosterone, and Identity, by Bob Ostertag, University of Massachusetts Press, 2016, https://www.amazon.com/Sex-Science-Self-Estrogen-Testosterone-ebook/dp/B07CHB9B7Y (https://www.amazon.com/Sex-Science-Self-Estrogen-Testosterone-ebook/dp/B07CHB9B7Y) ISBN: https://www.google.com/search?tbm=bks&q=isbn:9781625342133 (978-1-62534-213-3) Extended Notes In his book, Sex Science Self: A Social History of Estrogen, Testosterone, and Identity, Bob describes the extraordinary claims by big pharma and the medical establishment about hormones determining gender. Is human gender chemical-based? Bob offers examples of the meaning of how hormones affect the body and how that meaning has changed. A deeper dive into the marketable idea that testosterone represents masculinity. How to better anticipate the landmines of pharmaceutical propaganda. Pharmaceutical hormones were the miracle cure without a disease. At the time, the thought was whoever could synthesize testosterone was going to be rich. Gay liberation groups did not want to talk to the medical establishment. Transgender issues are reflective of all the problems we have in the world today. In the past, a transition was only accomplished through physical surgery. All human identities are becoming chemically constructed. A project out of UC Berkeley is attempting to debunk the Low T campaign. Bob dispels some myths about hormone imbalances and the medical conditions they supposedly cause. Inspecting the ethical dilemma of consumer-led medicines. For 10 years, Bob's book was mostly ignored. This podcast is sponsored by ReIME and Genspect. Dear hell-hackers: I, Kirby Bevins, apologize for the delay of "Hot Metal Dobermans". I also blame Mayor Boccaccio's Blackguard Cyber-Squad. They intercepted Episode 04 through a sidewall. Do not be alarmed! We circumvented the fire-block. Hang tight and stay vigilant. Be ready for the new microchipped vaccine – it packs a secret punch. Speaking of secrets, guess our guest today and you could win tickets to see the Vapor Games. Also, we feature a world exclusive note from Qwerty Ping, noted domestic terrorist-cum-interim Congressional Speaker. Also, just listen. In this special edition which focuses for the first time on Bob Ostertag's home city of San Francisco, we meet Myrna Melgar, the first Latina EVER elected to San Francisco's Board of Supervisors without first being appointed to the seat. Myrna's family fled El Salvador where her family had been torn apart by civil war, the same war on which Bob spent much of the 1980s working as an activist and journalist.

In Episode 40 we looked at a variety of pop, rock and folk music licensed through a creative commons licence, or made freely available. In this episode we look at four other, quite different, musics made available in this way. Karine Gilanyan plays the first movement of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata number 15 in D Major. Jahzzar plays the self-composed Fibonacci from his album kontra-punkte. Bob Ostertag performs Arms and Legs. Julie Licata presents her work resound. Together these illustrate the wide variety of people who choose to present their music and sounds to the world using Creative Commons licences. All the artists chosen stand as an illustration of the fact that many talented, well known, and well respected artists have chosen, for their own reasons, to use this method to present some or all of their work. Each of these represents a gift to the world. If you look in the references on the website you will find links to both the artists and the specific musical pieces in this episode. We should also point out that Bob Ostertag has also just published a Home Yoga Companion book that you can download free from his website. Please have a listen and PASS IT ON!

In this Episode Saul and Jolene talk about knowing the rules for a rpg game. How important is it, how necessary is it for a GM to know the all the rules? What about the players? Saul and Jolene talk about their trials and tribulations of knowing the rules to rpgs they have run in the past. They talk about running new Role Playing Games at your home game and at game conventions. They discuss what can happen when a GM is not as knowledgeable of the rules as their players. This could make the game pretty difficult for the GM. Thanks for listening and all we ask is that you pass along our podcast to your friends and family. Tonight we talk to filmmakers Bob Ostertag and Daniel Nicoletta about a soon-to-be produced documentary, Thanks to Hank. Thanks to Hank is the story of a gay saint, a liberation movement, a plague, and an approach to gay activism that puts poor people first. Hank Wilson was the fiercest gay activist you never heard of. In San Francisco during the 1970s and 80s, Hank was the Johnny Appleseed of gay liberation. Everywhere he went new organizations sprang up. Many are still with us. The AIDS Candlelight vigil he put together, five years before the formation of ACTUP, is now the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial, organized by 1,200 community organizations in 115 countries. This documentary will tell his story with the help of star of Orange is the New Black Lea DeLaria, former California State Assembyperson Tom Ammiano, The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and the Kronos Quartet. With co-host, Brody Levesque.

After reading Mike Mearl's tweet "Railroading has gotten such a bad rap in RPG circles that we forget it is one end on a continuum.", Saul was a bit surprised that Mr. D&D was defending Railroad games. Saul talked to Jolene about the quote and the decision was made to discuss this topic on Gaming Perspectives with Saul and Jolene. We dicuss the definition of the term railroad and Saul slowly comes around to Mike Mearl's way of thinking. Jolene doesn't like the term "railroad" and uses the term linear. Saul and Jolene discuss what is a Railroad/Linear game with examples of games they have run or played. And finally give their analysis of the topic. The discussion that you’ll hear took place in 2011 between the Hamilton-based scholar, filmmaker, and writing instructor Mauricio Martinez, and scholar, journalist, and improvising sound artist Bob Ostertag. This conversation has a gorgeous pace about it, with Ostertag calmly articulating his thoughts about technology and improvisation, especially electronic musical production. His inviting speaking style will hypnotize you into a reflection on Walter Benjamin’s ideas about the reproducibility of art in relation to today’s digital media distribution. Ostertag also talks about playing with acclaimed improviser and saxophonist Anthony Braxton. I give you a taste of Ostertag’s work with his composition All the Rage, played by the Kronos Quartet and Eric Gupton. This episode originally aired on CFRU 93.3FM on January 19th, 2016. Sound It Out is hosted by Rachel Elliott who is a PhD candidate in Philosophy at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. Sound It Out is produced in conjunction with the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation. The show explores whether and how improvised music can serve as a basis for discursive inclusivity, the creation of new forms of shared meaning, and more democratic means of connecting with each other. Sound It Out airs on Guelph’s campus and community radio station, CFRU 93.3FM, on alternating Tuesdays at 5pm.

The title of this mix is taken from the beautiful soundtrack it heavily leans on: Alexandre Desplat's "Rust and Bone" ("De Rouille et D'Os"). "Rust" usually refers to 'decay', but in dutch "Rust" simply also means 'rest', ('tranquil - or 'repos' in french). But - as we say in Holland: "Rust Roest" - or: "Too much rest will make you rusty..." In other words: don't expect just 'tranquil' sounds in this mix.. This is nót meant to be your average 'healing session ambient' soundtrack... so be prepared... --- originally published on Ambientblog --- Playlist: [Start Time][Sample Length][Artist - Title][Album], [Year], [Label details] 00:00 01:16 Colin Stetson - All the Days I've Missed You (Ilay I)De Rouille et D'Os OST, 2012, Idol Records 691.A003.020/WNP000700:59 01:49 Ben Woods - The Brightest Lights in the Darkest SkiesMoments, 2009, Wise Owl OWL-04401:23 03:34 Listening Mirror - There are No StarsFive Pieces, 2012, Rural Colours RC050 03:22 02:27 Y0t0 - Uriarra Road (Seaworthy)Uriarra Road, 2011, Facture 00304:29 04:06 Luup - DawnIt's Not Boring, It's Ambient, 2012, Preserved Sound07:54 02:32 Paulo Raposo - UntitledUntitled Songs: 49 Years from Gesang der Jünglinge, 2005, Sirr 002009:07 03:06 Dyane Donck - IrredeemableMind the Gap 100, 2013, Gonzo Circus GC12610:39 02:29 Jan Kees Helms - E-NatureFall Asleep Ghosts, 2009, DNA Production DNA 7211:27 01:34 Daddy You Scared Me sample from Possession, 2012, Ghost House Pictures12:27 01:13 Michael Esposito, Carl Michael von Hauswolff, Phantom Air Waves - The Ghosts of Effingham,The Ghosts of Effingham, 2010, Parapsychic Acoustic Research Cooperative – PARC 412:37 01:46 Mychael Danna - TsimtsumLife of Pi OST, 2012, 20th Century Fox 8872547725213:56 02:25 Bob Ostertag, Phil Minton - InkVerbatim Flesh & Blood, 1998, Seeland 51214:36 01:51 Eyvind Kang - Wintercount - Avalika SvaraGrass, 2012, Tzadik TZ808915:45 02:03 Alexandre Desplat - AliDe Rouille et D'Os OST, 2012, Idol Records 691.A003.020/WNP000716:42 03:40 Pauwel de Buck - Rehabilitated DistrictMind the Gap 88, 2011, Gonzo Cicus GC11317:38 03:01 Offthesky - Khione Cast the ChildA Winter's Gift, 2012, Hibernate HB4618:51 06:05 Richard Chartier - Retrieval PathAirport Symphony, 2007, Room40 EDRM41721:30 03:38 Porya Hatami - WinterLand, 2012, Somehow Recording SR-2823:49 02:07 Ben Frost - Feeding10, 2011, Room40 DRM41025:18 02:29 Ben Lukas Boysen; Nils Frahm - Closing Credits (By Nils Frahm)Restive OST, 2012, hymen records ¥803 25:49 03:09 Yourai - To Karlheinz StockhausenMusic for Elevators 4, 2012, Mahorka mhrk09127:47 04:57 Arve Henriksen - Recording AngelCartography, 2008, ECM 208631:33 04:43 Chris Watson - Mexico D.F.El Tren Fantasma, 2011, Touch TO:4235:23 03:07 Bass Communion - TailwindHeadwind-Tailwind, 2009, My Own Little Label MOLL03037:48 02:10 Alexandre Desplat - De Rouille et D'OsDe Rouille et D'Os OST, 2012, Idol Records 691.A003.020/WNP000738:50 05:50 Francisco Lopez - Untitled #233Untitled (2009), 2011, Baskaru Karu:2040:19 03:38 Luca Nasciuti - CradleBrave New World, 2011, FeedbackLoop Label FbL01042:39 03:14 Ed.S - Leftover2_(Ed.S Remix)Shinkei + mise_en_scene - Leftovers (Reworked), 2011, Crónica 06045:29 02:23 Justin Bennett - MoorlandWildlife, 2008, Spore Records 00746:18 03:52 Simon Whetham - FabricariaLoud Listening, 2012, Crónica 06747:05 02:36 Yann Novak - Slow MotionSequence 5, 2012, Future Sequence SE 00548:40 00:46 Cliff Martinez - PlaceboContagion OST, 2011, Watertower Music WTM3926648:48 04:17 Linear Bells - Purple Night (feat.
