In 2017 a cruise ship called the Caledonian Sky was sailing near the Raja Ampat islands in Indonesia when it ran aground in the shallow waters and got stuck. The coral reef was severely damaged. Raja Ampat is one of the world's most popular dive sites and a national park. The accident caused a serious loss of marine diversity and affected the livelihoods of the islanders, who rely on fishing and tourism. After a long investigation, an out of court settlement was reached, worth hundreds of millions of dollars. And this money has been used to repair the coral reefs, with the indigenous population playing a crucial role. Normally coral can take years and years to grow back, but this project is already yielding results, after just a few months. We chat to Lesthia Kertopati, a BBC journalist in Jakarta, about this multi-million dollar coral reef restoration project.Instagram: @bbcwhatintheworld Email: whatintheworld@bbc.co.uk WhatsApp: +44 330 12 33 22 6 Presenter: Hannah Gelbart Producer: Julia Ross-Roy Video Journalist: Baldeep Chahal Editors: Verity Wilde and Harriet Oliver

Jean-Gaël "JG" Collomb says community-based conservation organizations know best how to tackle the complex conservation challenges unique to their ecosystems. However, they're also among the most underserved in terms of funding of all stripes. On this week's episode of Mongabay's podcast, Collomb explains how his nonprofit, Wildlife Conservation Network (WCN), is working to change that. When it comes to funding conservation," it's really difficult to know who to give your money to besides a handful of organizations that a lot of people are familiar with," Collomb says. WCN facilitates partnerships between community-based conservation groups, primarily in Global South nations with funders, in what has previously been described as “‘venture capital for conservation,” or as Collomb says, “people invest in people.” They are “the first actors,” he says. “We're huge fans of being able to encourage people to give unrestricted [funding] … those organizations who are based on the ground in the field know best how to use that money.” Subscribe to or follow the Mongabay Newscast wherever you listen to podcasts, from Apple to Spotify, and you can also listen to all episodes here on the Mongabay website. The new episode of The Nick Fong Podcast featuring Randy and Jill delves into their adventurous transition from life in Canada to an international lifestyle centered around freedom and exploration. The couple, originally from Vancouver Island, shares how their decision to move to Cabo San Lucas was sparked by a harsh winter experience that led them to reevaluate their priorities. They sold their home and possessions, seeking a life unbound by the responsibilities of homeownership. Randy, a retired fire department captain with real estate experience, and Jill, who worked in the fashion industry, discuss how they adapted to living in Mexico, including obtaining permanent residency. They emphasize the ease of the process and their newfound flexibility. The couple's global travels included Egypt, Indonesia, Vietnam, and various other countries, where they engaged in unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences like a 360-kilometer motorcycle loop and diving in Raja Ampat. They also touch on starting their YouTube channel, Travel & Explore Now, initially focusing on short content before transitioning to longer videos. Their series, Goodbye Canada, highlights their observations about healthcare and infrastructure differences they noted while traveling, comparing these experiences to their Canadian background. The episode underscores their insights into real estate trends, expatriate life, and the benefits of slow travel, emphasizing the freedom and connections they have gained along the way.

A dazzling, evidence-based account of one man's quest to heal from complex PTSD by turning to endangered coral reefs and psychedelic plants after traditional therapies failed—and his awakening to the need for us to heal the planet as well. Professor Greg Wrenn likes to tell his nature-writing students, “The ecological is personal, and the personal is ecological.” What he's never told them is how he's lived out those correspondences to heal from childhood abuse at the hands of his mother. Mothership: A Memoir of Wonder and Crisis (Regalo Press, 2024) is a deeply researched account of Greg turning to coral reefs and a psychedelic rainforest tea called ayahuasca to heal from complex PTSD—a disorder of trust, which makes the very act of bonding with someone else panic-inducing. From the tide pools in Florida where he grew up, to Indonesia's Raja Ampat archipelago and the Amazon rainforest, Greg takes his readers on a journey across the globe. In his search for healing from personal and ecological trauma, he dives into both the ocean and the psyche—and finds they have a lot in common. Mothership is one man's audacious search for healing when talk therapy and pharmaceuticals did little to help. Written with prophetic urgency, Mothership ultimately asks if doses of nature will be enough to save us before it's too late—and what well-being means in a fracturing society on a dying planet. Today's guest is Jay Griffiths, award-winning author of several books, including the acclaimed Wild: An Elemental Journey. She speaks with co-host Rachel Donald about the importance of language for preserving communities and their cultures, the impact of colonization and globalization on Indigenous communities, and the innate human connection with the natural world in the land of one's birth. Roughly 4,000 of the world's 6,700 languages are spoken by Indigenous communities, but multiple factors (such as the decimation of human rights) continue to threaten their existence along with their speakers' cultures. The guest also explores parallels between humans, nature and culture: “There's great research that suggests that we learned ethics from wolves [by taking] an attitude to the world of both me the individual, and of me the pack member,” in caring for all members of the group, she says.

Kathleen from Plenty of Sunshine Travel met with Monika from Aqua Expeditions for this week's episode. . If you want to help this channel out, you can buy me a coffee at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/PlentyofSunshineTravel . . In this week's episode, we took a deep dive into Aqua Blu's itineraries. All Aqua Expedition ships get a full refurbishment every year. They are kept in top condition. Aqua Blu holds no more than 30 guests onboard. . Aqua Blue visits the Komodo Islands, Raja Ampat and the Spice Islands. . From April to September, you will find them in Bali and the Komodo Islands. In October & November, you will visit the Spice Islands December, January & February, we go to the Raja Ampat region. In all of these regions, you can set sail for 7 nights. Of course, you will need to get from one region to the other, and some cruise lines call these repositioning cruises, but Aqua Expeditions calls these itineraries 12-night cross-destination expeditions . The top-selling itinerary I will need to book you on early is the itinerary incorporating the Spice Islands with Raja Ampat. You can also explore the itinerary that incorporates the forgotten Islands and spice islands and a little bit of the band of Sea Islands along the way. . Let's start with Raja Ampat: This is the number one diving site in the world, it is on the top of the bucket list for people who dive or even snorkel. It is the most marine bio-diverse island on the planet. There's so much to see here on land and by the water. . Moving on to Komodo/Flores In this area, you will enjoy the absolute highlight of this cruise! You will be taken out in a small boat. They will take you to a location only known to Aqua Expeditions, where you can experience a Blue Whale Shark sighting! This is a very rare and special experience in which you can experience the blue whale shark sightings. Aqua Expeditions is the only vessel to experience this. They have a great friendship with some of the local fishermen. This takes place very early in the morning. You were awakened to depart for this special activity even before sunrise. As the fishermen throw their nets into the water, small pieces of fish go into the water, and it attracts the Blue Whale Sharks. The Blue Whales emerge from beneath the ocean. You don't have to be in the water to experience this. But, many people hop into the water and experience swimming with the Blue Whale Sharks. It is life-changing! . Next, we discussed the seven-night Comodo National Park to Bali itinerary. 12 Night Flores to Spice Islands Maumere to Ambon. . Spice IslandsCenturies ago, this was the only place where spices like cinnamon and nutmeg were grown. This was an important island and an important region. The itineraries on Aqua Blue are: Raja Ampat -- Round-trip Raja Ampat to Spice Islands - -Cross-Destination Spice Islands to Flores -- Cross-Destination Bali to Komodo National Park -- Bi-Directional Komodo National Park to Bali -- Bi-Directional Flores (Labuan Baio) to Spice Islands -- Cross-DestinationAmbon & Spice Islands - Round-trip Spice Islands to Raja Ampat -- Cross-Destination. Kate Adie introduces dispatches from Ukraine, Greece, Armenia, the US-Mexico border and Indonesia's Raja Ampat Islands. There have been months of speculation about when and how Ukraine might use its armed forces, and their new weaponry, in a counter-offensive to take back territory occupied by Russia. Russian attacks are still hitting Ukrainian cities almost every day. Hugo Bachega describes how two men in Kyiv - a civilian whose home was bombed, and the President, who must lead the country through this war - are keeping their nerve. Before the Greek election there was plenty of talk about the frustrated ambitions of young Greeks, and public outrage over cronyism in politics. Yet Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was re-elected, and his wasn't the only familiar face to be brought back to govern in Athens. Nick Beake covered the campaign, and gained a few insights into the enduring power of the country's political dynasties along the way. Armenia and Azerbaijan have been discussing normalising relations, and reopening transport links, in peace talks in Moscow - but there are still many potential stumbling blocks along the road to a settlement. The disputed enclave of Nagorno Karabakh is at the heart of the matter, but as Emily Craig heard while visiting southern Armenia, many people in the country still feel they're on a permanent war footing. Last week, international media readied themselves to cover an expected surge of people trying to cross the border into the United States from Mexico. It was believed that the expiry of the Title 42 regulations would trigger a new migration crisis. Yet it didn't happen - even though there are thousands of people still trying to enter the US. Bernd Debussman reports from the streets of El Paso. And in the island archipelago of Raja Ampat, in the Southwest Papua province of Indonesia, Sara Wheeler has recently seen wonders - including a rare glimpse of the purple tail of a Wilson's bird of paradise, and a walking shark in some of the world's most biodiverse waters. "It just doesn't feel like a living Vietnamese town." Environmental impact, carbon emissions and artificial intelligence (AI) are three of the hottest topics in tourism. This week, Gary & Hannah welcome back Bali-based Stuart McDonald, Founder of Travelfish, to take on these vital talking points. Stuart recently travelled through Vietnam, where he tracked his carbon footprint using the Capture and Path Net Zero apps. He discusses his findings and observations while travelling from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi by train. Stuart also discusses the contrasting challenges (and current outcomes) for tourism in Hoi An and Hue. Taking a tangential turn, we chat about AI chatbots in tourism, and the building of AI-generated content into travel products and information services. Rounding out the discussion, we address a phantom train in Cambodia (which tops the search rankings) and diving in Raja Ampat in Indonesia. And listen out for the rooster!
