Why swim when you can just walk from a to b?! This week, we are taking a closer look at the "walking" or epaulette sharks, a group of nine species who have evolved a slightly unusual way of getting around. We're joined by Faqih Akbar Alghozali, co-founder of Elasmobranch Project Indonesia (EPI) and SOSF project leader, who has lots of stories to share from his time in the field with the Kalabia, or Raja Ampat epaulette shark. Faqih and his team are trying to understand more about this poorly studied species, who are endemic to this remote paradise.  Shownotes: www.saveourseas.com/worldofsharks/podcast You can find out more about the EPI here: https://elasmobranch.id or follow them on Instagram (@elasmobranchid). The new episode of The Nick Fong Podcast featuring Randy and Jill delves into their adventurous transition from life in Canada to an international lifestyle centered around freedom and exploration. The couple, originally from Vancouver Island, shares how their decision to move to Cabo San Lucas was sparked by a harsh winter experience that led them to reevaluate their priorities. They sold their home and possessions, seeking a life unbound by the responsibilities of homeownership. Randy, a retired fire department captain with real estate experience, and Jill, who worked in the fashion industry, discuss how they adapted to living in Mexico, including obtaining permanent residency. They emphasize the ease of the process and their newfound flexibility. The couple's global travels included Egypt, Indonesia, Vietnam, and various other countries, where they engaged in unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences like a 360-kilometer motorcycle loop and diving in Raja Ampat. They also touch on starting their YouTube channel, Travel & Explore Now, initially focusing on short content before transitioning to longer videos. Their series, Goodbye Canada, highlights their observations about healthcare and infrastructure differences they noted while traveling, comparing these experiences to their Canadian background. The episode underscores their insights into real estate trends, expatriate life, and the benefits of slow travel, emphasizing the freedom and connections they have gained along the way.

A dazzling, evidence-based account of one man's quest to heal from complex PTSD by turning to endangered coral reefs and psychedelic plants after traditional therapies failed—and his awakening to the need for us to heal the planet as well. Professor Greg Wrenn likes to tell his nature-writing students, “The ecological is personal, and the personal is ecological.” What he's never told them is how he's lived out those correspondences to heal from childhood abuse at the hands of his mother.  Mothership: A Memoir of Wonder and Crisis (Regalo Press, 2024) is a deeply researched account of Greg turning to coral reefs and a psychedelic rainforest tea called ayahuasca to heal from complex PTSD—a disorder of trust, which makes the very act of bonding with someone else panic-inducing. From the tide pools in Florida where he grew up, to Indonesia's Raja Ampat archipelago and the Amazon rainforest, Greg takes his readers on a journey across the globe. In his search for healing from personal and ecological trauma, he dives into both the ocean and the psyche—and finds they have a lot in common. Mothership is one man's audacious search for healing when talk therapy and pharmaceuticals did little to help. Written with prophetic urgency, Mothership ultimately asks if doses of nature will be enough to save us before it's too late—and what well-being means in a fracturing society on a dying planet.

Kathleen from Plenty of Sunshine Travel met with Monika from Aqua Expeditions for this week's episode. . If you want to help this channel out, you can buy me a coffee at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/PlentyofSunshineTravel . . In this week's episode, we took a deep dive into Aqua Blu's itineraries. All Aqua Expedition ships get a full refurbishment every year. They are kept in top condition. Aqua Blu holds no more than 30 guests onboard. . Aqua Blue visits the Komodo Islands, Raja Ampat and the Spice Islands. . From April to September, you will find them in Bali and the Komodo Islands. In October & November, you will visit the Spice Islands December, January & February, we go to the Raja Ampat region. In all of these regions, you can set sail for 7 nights. Of course, you will need to get from one region to the other, and some cruise lines call these repositioning cruises, but Aqua Expeditions calls these itineraries 12-night cross-destination expeditions . The top-selling itinerary I will need to book you on early is the itinerary incorporating the Spice Islands with Raja Ampat. You can also explore the itinerary that incorporates the forgotten Islands and spice islands and a little bit of the band of Sea Islands along the way. . Let's start with Raja Ampat: This is the number one diving site in the world, it is on the top of the bucket list for people who dive or even snorkel. It is the most marine bio-diverse island on the planet. There's so much to see here on land and by the water. . Moving on to Komodo/Flores In this area, you will enjoy the absolute highlight of this cruise! You will be taken out in a small boat. They will take you to a location only known to Aqua Expeditions, where you can experience a Blue Whale Shark sighting! This is a very rare and special experience in which you can experience the blue whale shark sightings. Aqua Expeditions is the only vessel to experience this. They have a great friendship with some of the local fishermen. This takes place very early in the morning. You were awakened to depart for this special activity even before sunrise. As the fishermen throw their nets into the water, small pieces of fish go into the water, and it attracts the Blue Whale Sharks. The Blue Whales emerge from beneath the ocean. You don't have to be in the water to experience this. But, many people hop into the water and experience swimming with the Blue Whale Sharks. It is life-changing! . Next, we discussed the seven-night Comodo National Park to Bali itinerary. 12 Night Flores to Spice Islands Maumere to Ambon. . Spice IslandsCenturies ago, this was the only place where spices like cinnamon and nutmeg were grown. This was an important island and an important region. The itineraries on Aqua Blue are: Raja Ampat -- Round-trip Raja Ampat to Spice Islands - -Cross-Destination Spice Islands to Flores -- Cross-Destination Bali to Komodo National Park -- Bi-Directional Komodo National Park to Bali -- Bi-Directional Flores (Labuan Baio) to Spice Islands -- Cross-DestinationAmbon & Spice Islands - Round-trip Spice Islands to Raja Ampat -- Cross-Destination. Last year my husband started working for Cunard and so we are really new to cruising but want to make the most of his staff discount. We have a cruise to the Norwegian Fjords booked for July 2023, 7 nights out of Southampton on Queen Victoria. So far the only excursion we've booked is a visit to Briksdal Glacier. We have done lots of research and feel happy with this as the only pre-booked cruise line excursion. The other port days we are happy to just wander nearby to the ship and see where we end up. My question is, do you feel that you can get the best out of port days just going with the flow or do you prefer pre-booked and organised trips? Sitting on a coach with 60 other people looking at passing views is my idea of hell, I'd much rather put on some hiking boots and walk to a waterfall. Love the show, especially Chris's Cunard insights, hope to catch an enrichment talk one day!Baz suggests look at the independant shore excursions operators such as Venture Ashore: https://www.ventureashore.com/Listener Question from KeithWhile cruising recently on Holland America's Nieuw Statendam, I noticed an interesting shape on the rear of the hull below deck 1.  What is the purpose of the extended structure at the rear of the ship beneath the mooring lines?  When viewed from the rear or side, most of the “extension” is above the water.BazCruise NewsViking Opens up 2025 River Cruises for sale Due to overwhelming demand, Viking's 2025 river voyages are now open for sale.  This response comes as Viking celebrated record-breaking sales in January and earning top honours in the Cruise Critic 2023 Cruisers' Choice Awards across river, ocean and expedition categories. It is the first time Viking has three river seasons open for sale at once, providing guests with more choice when selecting their next unforgettable journey.Viking started the year with record-breaking sales in January and this demand has only continued throughout the following months. The ship continues the innovation that debuted with the Edge Series but will also be equipped with a new engine model, along with storage and delivery systems, that will give unmatched fuel flexibility, with the ability to use three types of fuel, including methanol. To allow for the ship's fuel flexibility, Wärtsilä will deliver two converted 8-cylinder Wärtsilä 46F engines to allow them to utilize three fuel sources, including methanol. These changes not only advance carbon-free cruising, but by adding methanol as a fuel option, local emission like sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter are significantly reduced.Formula 1 Races in Abu Dhabi + Monaco Can Be Accessed Via a Cruise Ship So Small & Nimble It Feels Like Your Own Private YachtSmall ship line Windstar Cruises has added a new Formula 1 experience for its guests, this time at the final race of the 2023 season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November. Chris/Baz Europe appears to be the modern leader in construction of passenger ships, but are their any Australian ship builders of significance?Unknown, Chris Baz have you ever visited the Barcelona Maritime Museum. I recently visited and highly recommend a visit. Just a short walk from the port area, it was the former Royal Dockyards of Barcelona, and houses some great content from the 15th Century to present day including a replica Royal Galleon, over 60m in length and powered by 59 oars and the power of 236 rowers and the fully operation Schooner Santa Eulalia.Cruise newsPONANT – 35 Years of Exploration Guided by NaturePonant is celebrating its 35th anniversary by paying tribute to those who have been at the heart of its development and growth since 1988 with a new media campaign highlighting their expertise and commitment. The people of PONANT all share the same ambition to make travel a unique experience of discovery, understanding and meaning, with nature as a guide.Exactly two years ago, Captain Etienne Garcia reached the North Pole aboard the first LNG-powered hybrid electric polar exploration vessel. Maria, a naturalist, shared her passion for tropical marine life in Las Islas de la Bahía archipelago in Honduras. Sandrine, a naturalist, and expedition leader accompanied passengers across to Macquarie Island to educate them on penguin species, and Mick returned to Indonesia, to connect with local communities in his mission to craft sustainable and inclusive expedition itineraries. All embody the philosophy that has guided PONANT on its own journey for the last 35 years.35 years of environmental awarenessReducing emissions remains a major challenge for the coming years, which is why PONANT targets to equip its entire fleet with shore power by 2026.This corporate journey could not be achieved without the commitment of guests, partners, and the daily work of its employees, all committed towards more sustainable tourism.https://youtu.be/kH6sTNEoFhsSilversea Unveils 140-Day World Cruise for 2026, Its Most Diverse Voyage EverSilversea Cruises has unveiled details on its 140-day World Cruise 2026, ‘The Curious and the Sea'—the most diverse and immersive voyage in the cruise line's history, which broadens the largest collection of extended sailings in ultra-luxury cruising. Guests will embark Silver Dawn® in Fort Lauderdale on January 6, 2026, before travelling deep into 70 destinations in 37 countries—the most ever on a Silversea World Cruise—including 26 calls that are new for a Silversea World Cruise or unvisited since 2020, and 9 overnights. An exclusive pre-sale opens to Venetian Society members on June 14, while general sales open on June 22.‘The Curious and the Sea' will connect travellers with the rich history of navigation, inspired by the same curiosity that led ancient seafarers to sail to unknown lands. Channeling the same spirit of discovery that has driven exploration throughout the ages, bespoke events ashore, onboard activities, regionally inspired culinary experiences, three optional overland tours (Uzbekistan, Luxor, and the Balkans), and more will enrich the voyage. Guests will follow ancient trade routes, sailing the waters that connected the Silk Road, and transiting both the Panama and Suez canals; they will step foot on some of the world's most remote islands, including those in the South Pacific, a region explored by Captain James Cook in the 18th century; and they will witness lands that inspired scientific progression, such as Western Australia, which attracted Charles Darwin in 1836.70 DESTINATIONS, 37 COUNTRIES, 26 NEW DESTINATIONS, 140 DAYSFollowing a curated travel experience—including private executive transfers, Business class air, and a dedicated meet and greet service—world cruising guests will board Silver Dawn in Fort Lauderdale on January 6, 2026, journeying through Central America, before transiting the Panama Canal to South America. Easter Island, French Polynesia, and the South Pacific will follow, leading guests to New Zealand and a semi-circumnavigation of Australia. Travellers will then explore Southeast Asia, crossing the Bay of Bengal to Sri Lanka, India, and the Red Sea, before passing through the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean. Guests will admire some of the world's clearest night skies, retracing the steps of early explorers who looked to the stars for navigation, as well as the country's most spectacular landscapes and wildlife species—some of which inspired Charles Darwin's ‘Theory of Evolution.' Highlights will include the rarely visited Phillip Island for the chance to see the penguin parade, during which thousands of Little Penguins dash from the sea to the dunes; Port Lincoln, for the Coffin Bay National Park and the Eyre Peninsula; and Esperance, visited for the first time on a Silversea World Cruise, with its pink salt lakes. Kate Adie introduces dispatches from Ukraine, Greece, Armenia, the US-Mexico border and Indonesia's Raja Ampat Islands. There have been months of speculation about when and how Ukraine might use its armed forces, and their new weaponry, in a counter-offensive to take back territory occupied by Russia. Russian attacks are still hitting Ukrainian cities almost every day. Hugo Bachega describes how two men in Kyiv - a civilian whose home was bombed, and the President, who must lead the country through this war - are keeping their nerve. Before the Greek election there was plenty of talk about the frustrated ambitions of young Greeks, and public outrage over cronyism in politics. Yet Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was re-elected, and his wasn't the only familiar face to be brought back to govern in Athens. Nick Beake covered the campaign, and gained a few insights into the enduring power of the country's political dynasties along the way. Armenia and Azerbaijan have been discussing normalising relations, and reopening transport links, in peace talks in Moscow - but there are still many potential stumbling blocks along the road to a settlement. The disputed enclave of Nagorno Karabakh is at the heart of the matter, but as Emily Craig heard while visiting southern Armenia, many people in the country still feel they're on a permanent war footing. Last week, international media readied themselves to cover an expected surge of people trying to cross the border into the United States from Mexico. It was believed that the expiry of the Title 42 regulations would trigger a new migration crisis. Yet it didn't happen - even though there are thousands of people still trying to enter the US. Bernd Debussman reports from the streets of El Paso. And in the island archipelago of Raja Ampat, in the Southwest Papua province of Indonesia, Sara Wheeler has recently seen wonders - including a rare glimpse of the purple tail of a Wilson's bird of paradise, and a walking shark in some of the world's most biodiverse waters. Producer: Polly Hope Editor: Richard Fenton-Smith Production Co-ordinator: Helena Warwick-Cross

Kathleen from Plenty of Sunshine Travel met with Monika from Aqua Expeditions for this week's cruise chat. . I love meeting new cruise lines, so this was extra special to me, as it was the first time I had the chance to meet with Aqua Expeditions. . Monika did an excellent brand overview! Aqua has five ships. Three River Expeditions: Aqua Mare. Aqua Nera. Aria Amazon. Two Yacht Expeditions Aqua Mekong Aqua Blu Aqua Expeditions has five pillars of distinction: SERVICE ~ Personalized luxury travel experiences with a 1:1 crew-to-guest ratio. DESIGN ~ State-of-the-art designed vessels. WILDLIFE, ADVENTURE AND CULTURE ~ Authentic tailor-made soft adventures. CUISINE ~ world-renowned chefs. RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL ~ Wildlife conservation programs and local community support. The ship's capacity is 16 to 40 guests and the same crew. All of your shore excursions are included in the fare. One of the shore excursions they offer - that I have not seen before - is fishing for piranhas. COOL! . Aqua Expeditions teams up with local chefs who offer local ingredients so you not only explore the areas you're visiting with your eyes and your body but also taste the areas you are visiting, giving you a more profound immersion experience. Aqua Expeditions honestly believe in sustainable travel. One example of this is the rugs that are on board Aqua Nera. The rugs are made with recycled fishing lines pulled from the waters they travel through. In addition, they had local artisans weave beautiful rugs with ocean materials. Aqua visits the Peruvian Amazon. The area that Aqua Expedition goes through is a protected rainforest, and it is protected from humans altering it in any way. The ships are designed to be environmentally friendly, and the excursions too. The Aqua Nera holds 40 passengers, and the Aqua Amazon has 32 passengers. . Aqua Mare has a capacity of 16 guests. . In the Galapagos islands, you will find two itineraries to choose from or do both for a 14-day cruise. Your cruise will depart from Embark at Baltra Island on Day 1 Day 2 - Bahía Borrero, Santa Cruz Island Bahía Darwin. El BarrancoGenovesa Island Day 3 - Bahía Sullivan, Santiago Island Sombrero Chino Island Day 4 Bartolomé Island, Cerro Dragón, Day 5 El Chato Giant Tortoise Reserve, Fausto Llerena Breeding Center, Santa Cruz Island. "It just doesn't feel like a living Vietnamese town." Environmental impact, carbon emissions and artificial intelligence (AI) are three of the hottest topics in tourism. This week, Gary & Hannah welcome back Bali-based Stuart McDonald, Founder of Travelfish, to take on these vital talking points. Stuart recently travelled through Vietnam, where he tracked his carbon footprint using the Capture and Path Net Zero apps. He discusses his findings and observations while travelling from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi by train. Stuart also discusses the contrasting challenges (and current outcomes) for tourism in Hoi An and Hue. Taking a tangential turn, we chat about AI chatbots in tourism, and the building of AI-generated content into travel products and information services. Rounding out the discussion, we address a phantom train in Cambodia (which tops the search rankings) and diving in Raja Ampat in Indonesia. And listen out for the rooster!

Raja Ampat is a place not known to many, except maybe avid scuba divers. It is not exactly the easiest place to get to, however the tolerance of nighttime flights and unreliable ferry and boat rides was well worth it for me.After diving in well-known places like the Caribbean, Palau, Sipadan, Fiji, Andaman Sea, to name a few, I quickly came to the conclusion that this area comes out on top, primarily because of the pristine condition of the coral reef system and the variety and quantity of marine life. I know it is a strange comparison, but activity-wise, underwater around Raja Ampat reminds me of Atlanta Airport on a busy weekday. So what did I see? Basically, a lot of beautiful and strange fish, including Wobbegong Sharks, Stingrays, Bicolor Angelfish, Blacktip Reef Sharks, Leaf Scorpionfish, Frogfish, Batfish, Papuan Garden Eel, Walking Sharks, Bumphead Parrotfish, and Crocodilefish to name a few.In addition, I went trekking in the jungle in search of Indonesia's Bird of Paradise. The local villages came by on my last night and entertained the resort  guests with traditional singing and dancing. Just delightful.Check out this video of my diving escapades. Thank you GoPro camera.www.youtube.com/watch?v=5g201kBzRqQ

Acting as the ship's godmother, Meredith Vieira – 15-time Emmy Award-winning host, executive producer and anchor – led the christening ceremony. After reciting her blessing, Vieira cut a rope tethered to the locally produced sparkling wine – Johann Hubert Exclusive – causing the bottle to smash against the newly named ship's bow. Managing Director of Avalon Waterways Pam Hoffee, Captain Ambrose Manolache and the ship's crew of 47 – as well as 75 invited guests that included journalists, travel agents, local dignitaries and tourism boards – cheered the ship's christening. The new Avalon View welcomes travellers aboard with a warm mix of light and dark woods, accented by rich taupe, brown and red décor in public spaces and touches of blue throughout the Suite Ship's Suites and Deluxe Staterooms, inspired by Dutch interior designer Liane van Leeuwen. Original art in common areas is by Dutch artist Eelco Maan and cabin paintings were created by another Dutch artist, Sofie Fisher.Creating wider openings for wide-eyed wonder, Avalon Waterways' Open-Air Balconies were designed with views in mind. A Panorama Suite highlight on all of the Suite Ships of Avalon, the wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows open 11-feet wide in Europe and 14-feet wide in Southeast Asia… wider than any other balconies in the industry. They blur the line between outside and in while forming a comfortable and spacious seating area without compromising room space. People want performance. As sustainability focused as a new product can be, if it is truly attempting to dominate the market, the new product has to be as good as or better than the less sustainable incumbent it is looking to replace. This is especially true with sustainable food. To this end, many of us have searched – often in vain – for plant-based dairy products, such as ice cream and cheese, that are both delicious and environmentally sustainable.  In this episode, Chad Reed sits down with Tim Wildin, CEO of Vertage. Using a chef-driven, science-backed, and consumer-focused approach, Vertage develops and sells delicious plant-based cheeses to restaurants across the spectrum in select U.S. cities. Tim talks about his career journey through the sustainable food space, how he teamed up with Chef Margaux Riccio to found Vertage, the secret sauce behind Vertage's plant-based cheeses, and much more. LinksVertageFlexitarian DietSalt, Fat, Acid, HeatEpisode recorded March 22, 2022

Join me this week in sunny Australia where I talk to Dr Andy Lewis, CEO and founder of the Coral Sea Foundation. Andy has a PhD in coral reef ecology from James Cook University and, along with his extensive experience in small ship adventure cruising, he has become one of the most skilled and widely traveled ecotourism professionals in the Indo-Pacific region. He managed the ecotourism activities aboard the luxury vessel True North for over a decade, exploring a wide variety of tropical locations, from the Rowley Shoals to the Kimberley in Australia; Komodo, Raja Ampat, and West Papua in Indonesia; the Bismarck Sea and Louisiade Archipelago in PNG, and the Western Province of Solomon Islands. Andy's passion for the reefs, islands and people of the South-Pacific is what inspired the birth of the Coral Sea Foundation. The aim of which is to be a platform for delivering a vision for sustainable reef management and the ultimate marine ecotourism experience. As part of this, Andy was able to setup the amazing Sea Women of Melanesia program which empowers indigenous women in the region, through scuba diving and marine science skills, so they can take an active role in creating and monitoring marine protected areas on their own coral reefs and inspire their island communities to protect and sustainably conserve this resource for generations to come.
