Godfather of hauntology, pioneer of industrial music, and the man behind spooky albums like "Séance at Hobs Lane", "The Wicker Tapes", and the Amicus and Taigon-inspired "Portmanteau of Horrors". That's merely a short summary of Drew Mulholland and his career! We were lucky to have this remarkable sound orchestrator talk with us about making music, horror films, and how he used a piece of the Wicker Man to make one of his albums. Enjoy!

Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts
This is the weekly columnWine labels and wine reviews may include various references to wine blending. Some are specific and informative. Others are distinctions without a difference. Let's explore the most common blending terms.• Blend. Broadest term. It includes combining various fruits or vinifications to create, develop, or enhance a wine using more than one grape variety and/or vintage. It includes growing and fermenting different varieties together, blending grapes immediately after or years after harvest, combining various vintages, combining wines fermented using different yeast clones, fermenting techniques, and aging regimens.• Field blend. Mixture of varieties that are grown, harvested, and fermented together.• Non-vintage. Involves blending grapes from different years. This is designed to reduce vagaries of different vintages to produce wine true to a distinct house style, ensuring consumers they will enjoy a consistent experience. Non-vintage is very common in Champagnes, Porto, and sherry. It can include blending of different varieties, but also a single variety from different vintages.• Assemblage. Blending of vinified wines before bottling. This term often is used in Bordeaux and Champagne. Term may have been coined by 17th-century monk-winemaker Dom Pérignon.• Marriage. Synonym for assemblage. A combination of wines blended before bottling.• Meritage. Portmanteau created to designate high-quality American wines that pay homage to Bordeaux blends. It combines “merit” and “heritage” and rhymes with “heritage.” It is not a French word with the pronunciation of the last syllable sounding like “garage.” Red meritage must be a blend of at least two varieties—cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, malbec, petit verdot, St. Macaire, gros verdot, or carmenère. White meritage must be a blend of at least two varieties—sauvignon blanc, sémillon, or muscadelle du Bordelais. American winemakers must follow strict guidelines to use the term.• Cuvée. All-purpose term with no regulated definition. A cuvée is wine made from a blend of different grapes, vineyards, or vintages. Basically, another word for blend.• Coupage. Another synonym for assemblage, except can have a negative connotation when it describes a wine were other wines were added just to increase the quantity of the wine.Tasting notes• M. Portmanteau - 2 words combined to form another word, like "smog" (smoke + fog) "internet" (interconnection and networks) "chortle" (chuckle + snort) or Juneteenth which combines June with 19—the day in 1865 that commemorates the emancipation of the last American slaves and the official end of slavery. It's been celebrated by multitudes for just shy of 160 years, so we figured it was time to join in because it's a great thing to celebrate, especially since we are the official podcast of the Holidays. “Sextortion (a portmanteau of sex and extortion) employs non-physical forms of coercion to extort sexual favors from the victim. Sextortion refers to the broad category of sexual exploitation in which abuse of power is the means of coercion, as well as to the category of sexual exploitation in which threatened release of sexual images or information is the means of coercion.[1] As used to describe an abuse of power, sextortion is a form of corruption[2] in which people entrusted with power – such as government officials, judges, educators, law enforcement personnel, and employers – seek to extort sexual favors in exchange for something within their authority to grant or withhold.[3][4][5][6][7] Examples of such abuses of power include: government officials who request sexual favors to obtain licenses or permits,[8][9] teachers who trade good grades for sex with students,[10][11] and employers who make providing sexual favors a condition of obtaining a job.[12] Sextortion also refers to a form of blackmail in which sexual information or images are used to extort money or sexual favors from the victim.[13][14] Social media and text messages are often the source of the sexual material and the threatened means of sharing it with others. An example of this type of sextortion is where people are extorted with a nude image of themselves they shared on the Internet through sexting. They are later coerced into giving money, or performing sexual acts with the person doing the extorting or are coerced into posing or performing sexually on camera, thus producing hardcore pornography.[15][14] This method of blackmail is also frequently used to out LGBT people who keep their true sexual orientation private.[16] A video highlighting the dangers of sextortion has been released by the National Crime Agency[17] in the UK to educate people, especially given the fact that blackmail of a sexual nature may cause humiliation to a sufficient extent to cause the victim to take their own life,[18] in addition to other efforts to educate the public on the risks of sextortion.[19] Sextortion using webcam content is concerning, especially for those who use them for flirting and cybersex.[19][18] Often this involves a cybercriminal posing as someone else – such as an attractive person – initiating communication of a sexual nature with the victim (about 95% of victims are male).[18] Often, the cybercriminal simply shows the victim a pre-recorded video of a performer from a cybersex webcam site which they are sufficiently familiar with, then messages the victim at points in the video where the performer appears to be typing on the keyboard, to give the illusion that the performer in the video is messaging them.[20] The victim is then persuaded to undress in front of a webcam, and may also be persuaded to engage in sexual behaviour, such as masturbation.[20] The video is recorded by the cybercriminal, who then reveals their true intent and demands money or other services (such as more explicit images of the victim, in cases of online predation), and threatening to publicly release the video to video services like YouTube and send it to family members and friends of the victim if they do not comply. Sometimes threats to make false allegations of paedophilia against the victim are made as well.[20] This is known as webcam blackmail.[21] An increase in webcam blackmails have been reported, and it affects both young and old, male and female alike.[22][23] Webcam blackmail is also connected with webcam trolling.[24]” -Wikipedia. “Sexual perfectionism, sexual denialism, and sexual emotionalism, is three of the countless effects and aftermath of Sextortion.” -Antonio Myers. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support
Lipreading has been in the news this month, thanks to gossip-stoking mouth movements at the Golden Globes that the amateur lipreaders of The Internet rushed to interpret. We are totally psyched to welcome Joe Symes & The Loving Kind! The band are currently finishing their upcoming third album Portmanteau, which is scheduled for release in early 2024. This has been preceded by the video It's All Too Late – a track taken from the album – which was uploaded live on YouTube on the 29th September. This song has already had international airplay, and reached number 2 in one of the major Rock charts in Australia (Banks Radio Australia Valley FM 85.9), as number 4 in one of the UK's (The Chart of Gold). Two tracks from their first ep appeared on the Charity Compilation "Shoulder to Shoulder" alongside tracks by Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene, Roger McGuinn (The Byrds), Robyn Hitchcock, Noel Gallagher, Peter Noone (Herman's Hermits) and Wishbone Ash. This collection was organised by David Quaife, whose brother Pete was the original bass player of the British rock legends The Kinks. Creation Records' Alan McGee even praised the album in question, Celebs Matthew Modine, and Michael Keaton are fans. Note the earlier time if you want to call into the live show.
It's hard to miss today's theme, as it's spelled out in large letters, in the middle of the grid, for all to see (as we describe in today's episode). There aren't many multilingual, multinational television shows that have been running for nearly seven decades. But what makes the Eurovision Song Contest so special to me is not the music, or the dancing, or the costumes that range from spangletastic to tear-off: no, it's the people butting heads about language. Historian Dean Vuletic, author of Postwar Europe and the Eurovision Song Contest, recounts the many changes in Eurovision's language rules, and its language hopes and dreams. This is the first of a two-part Eurovisionallusionist. In the next instalment: dictators. Protests. Boom Bang-A-Bang Ding-a-Dong Diggi-Loo Diggi-Ley. I made this sound collage in early 2013, nearly a decade ago now, and listening back to it recently I can hear the early seeds of techniques I use in Sound Propositions. My friend Ian Stone Grey was producing a beautiful audio series called Portmanteau at that time, and he included a piano composition of mine in one episode. I was inspired to create some collages of my own that veered further away from music without becoming narrative. A Portmanteau of sorts. Some treated field-recordings. Howlin Wolf. Federico Campagna on Novara Media. Gilles Deleuze on the ABCs. A phased stereo tape loop. Some edits from Bob Ostertag's Sooner or Later. —- Sound Propositions is written, recorded, mixed, and produced by Joseph Sannicandro. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/soundpropositions/support

That Does Suit Madame, a Podcast about "Are You Being Served?"
A new “Moment of Butch” sound effect on the show. (Thank you Mr. James). Superfan Mr. JJ suggests AYBS Fan Fiction! What is Mr. Lucas purchased Millstone Manor in “Grace & Favour” and Peacock and Rumbold have to defer to their new boss? Honorary Members of the That Does Suit Madame Research Department! AYBS only had one episode that focused on Miss. Brahams in the plot?! Superfan Mr. Rob points out Jeremy Lloyd's “secret” cameo in the first few episodes of AYBSA/Grace & Favour as the rich car driver when Capt. Peacock was on the runaway lawn mower. Yet more applicants for the free, unpaid TDSM intern program! (Meet Superman and special co-host Ms. Heather). Mr. Gregory sent us the long-elusive videos of John Inman for the 1990s PBS fundraiser videos “Best of AYBS” clips where he reprises Mr. Humphries and Mrs. Humphries! Stay tuned… AYBS props! Did Ms. Heather name her new cute daughter after the podcast?! An appropriately-timed joke about Mrs. Slocombe's cat. “Maybe -I- should be the head waiter!?” Don't ever give Mr. Jeff a tureen of Ministrone soup. A “tronc”, just a façon de parler… (a French term for a “poor box”). Mavis is now very clearly in love with Mr. Humphries. Should the podcast commission a future fan fiction/radio play when we run out of Grace & Favour episodes?! “An all-rounder” is this episode's “Moment of Butch” (a cricket reference!) A timely Madonna reference! Turnips: more entertaining than we ever thought? Mr. Molturd's flood of emotions. Mr. Humphries removes his hand from the knob. Miss. Lovelock's performing in luxury hotels around the world. Humphries reprises “Tony” from “The Holdup” as Luigi, the lovable bartender with his “Zombie Surprise” cocktail. Molturdian is an adjective. Capt. Peacock as Igor in his short dickie? “Skivvies” in the UK = maids. Miss. Lovelock criticizes Mrs. Slocombe and we get an amazing scene from Mollie Sugden. Saying naughty words in American and UK television (and Facebook/IG). “The family way” = pregnant. Portmanteau = a combination of two words into a new one like “brunch”. A Scooby Doo-esque farce of running around the corridor and being frightened. Was the Hall of Faces from Game of Thrones inspired from this episode of Grace & Favour? Welcome to the Belonging and Leadership podcast with Audrey. Today Audrey will be discussing the importance of cultural representation within your home with Sunyoung "Sunny" Hong. Originally trained in architecture, Sunny is a design-driven problem solver who is addressing the lack of representation of mixed-race people in America through an offering of home and lifestyle products that highlight people's multicultural heritage. As a founder of Portmanteau Home, she combines her design experiences across industries ranging from graphic design, hospitality design to resort planning, to advocate for creating homes that are more than just beautiful; a home should be a space that reflects one's history and heritage. Sunny hopes to bring the idea of modern multicultural home decor into the mainstream and provide visual affirmations to the complex cultural identities of mixed-race individuals. Sunny studied psychology at Yale University and holds a Master of Architecture from GSD, Harvard University.

This week's episode is a discussion about the best, worst and weirdest comic book movie castings pf all time. We get through as many as we can and, trust us, we cover A LOT.
Continued from Part 1… Portmanteau words are added to the English language all the time. Recently, scientists have attached cutting-edge bionic arms to people who have lost their real arms. The word comes from “biology” and “electronic.” A bionic device enhances a part of the body to perform a task. Sometimes if you're feeling hungry you can be a little short-tempered. You could say you're feeling hangry — from “hungry” and “angry.” Affluenza is a psychological concept that comes from “affluent” and “influenza.” It's a psychological condition that some say may affect young people from a very wealthy background. Symptoms include a lack of motivation, feelings of guilt for being so rich, and a feeling of isolation. Many people think this isn't a real disease, but they still use the word. Shopaholic combines “shopping” and “alcoholic,” and means someone who is a compulsive shopper. In the same way, you can also be a “workaholic” or a “chocaholic.” Portmanteau words sometimes relate to politics. Obamacare is a useful abbreviated form of “Obama” and “health care,” and is used to talk about the health care act that former U.S. President Barack Obama signed into law in 2010. Brexit, from “Britain” and “exit,” refers to the United Kingdom's decision to leave the European Union. It's a very useful shortening of a complex subject, and a new word that was on everyone's lips around 2016, when the U.K. held the Brexit referendum. (The Japan Times) This article was provided by The Japan Times Alpha.
A portmanteau word combines the meaning of two other words. If you take “smoke” and “fog,” you can make the portmanteau “smog,” which describes fog intensified by smoke or pollution. A motel is a hotel for motorists. As you can see, portmanteau words are a handy, shortened form of the two words. Portmanteau means “suitcase” in French. The English novelist Lewis Carroll first used the word “portmanteau” in his 1871 book Through the Looking-Glass. Humpty Dumpty says: “Well, slithy means ‘lithe and slimy' and mimsy is ‘flimsy and miserable.' You see it's like a portmanteau — there are two meanings packed up into one word.” Portmanteau is itself a portmanteau word from “porter” (to carry) and the French word “manteau” (coat). Carroll often used French because he was a poet who liked to include many languages in his writing, and the French language was held in high regard by educated English people at the time. Many portmanteau words are found in entertainment. A rom-com film is a romantic comedy. A sitcom is a situation comedy, where the same characters appear from episode to episode. A prequel combines “previous” and “sequel,” and is a film or book that happens before the first film or book. A biopic is from “biography” and “picture”: It's a film about a real person's life. There are many portmanteau words in technology. Email is a portmanteau of “electronic” and “mail.” A blog is an online journal, from the words “web” and “log.” The word podcast combines “iPod” and “broadcast,” and is an audio talk show that can be downloaded. Taken from “malicious” and “software,” malware is software designed to damage your computer or network. (The Japan Times) To be continued… This article was provided by The Japan Times Alpha.
