Welcome to the American Railroading Podcast! In this episode our host Don Walsh is joined by guest Betsy Cantwell – President of GoRail. Together they discuss the legislation pending in DC that will impact the rail industry such as the Railway Safety Act and overall Surface Transportation Bill. They do a deep dive into the current and impressive safety record of the rail industry, review all the programs GoRail offers to foster local community-based rail advocacy such as Rail Champions, as well as their Rail Grant Hub, accessibility to freight rail policy and data, and much more! Tune in to this episode to gain valuable insights and broaden your understanding of American Railroading! You can find this episode and more on the American Railroading Podcast's official website at www.AmericanRailroading.net , and watch our YouTube Channel at the link below. Welcome aboard!KEY POINTS: The American Railroading Podcast remains in the Top 10% of all podcasts globally, now downloaded in 83 countries, nearly 50% of the world!Don announces the celebration of the podcast's 3-Year Anniversary! Time sure flies!Since joining GoRail in 2015, Betsy has led the organization's advocacy and communications strategy to build public and political support for freight rail, including earned media, digital campaigns, grassroots mobilization, and message development, aimed at making freight rail policy accessible and compelling to the communities it impacts the most.Per the GoRail website at www.GoRail.org, founded in 2004 on the principle that “all politics is local,” GoRail believes that direct input from constituents is the best way to communicate with elected officials. GoRail works with thousands of community leaders across the country to tell the local story of freight rail — stronger economies, more jobs and cleaner skies.Among all the data available on the GoRail Website is a link to “Check Data for Rail in Your State”, which not only provides the data and benefits of rail in your state, but also gives contact information for your state reps and each major railroad.Betsy gives her opinion on the potential pros and cons of the pending Railway Safety Act and Surface Transportation Act.2025 has been reported as the safest year on record for the rail industry, with improvements across almost every safety metric. According to the Association of American Railroads, Freight Rail Safety - Fact Sheet available at www.AAR.org , the overall train accident rate declined 14 percent year-over-year, while derailments, equipment caused accidents, and track caused accidents each fell to the lowest levels in the railroad industry's history. In a press conference from March 13, 2023, former STB Chairman, Marty Oberman stated in part regarding rail safety: “The Bureau of Transportation Statistics documented last year (2022) that 94% of all hazardous materials spills occurred on truck and only 1% occurred on rail. So if you were trying to make sure communities all over the country are safer, you would want to move more of this material by train, rather than by truck”.Don encourages everyone to follow him on his LinkedIn page at Don Walsh | LinkedIn , and to review his article he published 05/21/26 titled “Railroads Helped Build America & New Policy will Shape the Future of Railroading”. In this episode, Mark and Ben discuss the complaint, issue, and (surprising!) opportunity of railroading your player characters. We'll talk about when to put smart limits on player agency for the benefit of the game and the players. In this week's Tune Up segment, we also talk about how to make travel an interesting gameplay element rather than an obstacle to getting to the next encounter.
The unique gift that RPGs can give, the thing that no other medium is capable of to its degree, is that the players can dwell in a world of cause & effect, free from any imposed plot or scripts. The habit started, I believe, with most of the old D&D modules. Escaping it is hard, but certainly worth it.
Dan and Paul discuss the art of pacing a tabletop RPG session without taking away player agency. How can a GM speed up play when the group burrows into side plots, or slow things down when players sprint straight toward the finale? When should you intervene to shape the tempo, and when should you simply let the party set the pace themselves? They also compare how pacing concerns differ between one-shot adventures and long-term campaigns, and explore ways to maintain momentum while still allowing players the freedom to explore, wander, and surprise the GM. Milton D. Hays had two things: a dream of a railroad linking Pittsburgh to the coal fields of southwestern Pennsylvania, and a lack of ethics that would allow him to realize that dream. Alpha News Senior Reporter Liz Collin has been following the circus surrounding the death of George Floyd for over 5 years, and now her team at Alpha have released a devastating documentary about the subsequent trial of Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin, who was accused of murdering Floyd with an alleged illegal restraint. But the Alpha team dug below the surface of what the public saw at trial, and their investigation revealed a case that was based on half-truths, misdirection, and a city that perhaps feared the outcome if Chauvin was not convicted, remembering all too clearly the fiery chaos that engulfed Minneapolis in the aftermath of Floyd's death. Collin joins the program to discuss what they uncovered and talk about the documentary itself.WATCH "THE FALL OF MINNEAPOLIS": https://youtu.be/eFPi3EigjFA?si=-dHcvyOZuXZNmhgK
Welcome to this super-charged, explosive episode of Light ‘Em Up.We're currently being downloaded in 119 countries. We tackle the topics that touch your lives! On this episode we examine how our First Amendment (freedom of speech) and due process rights can be stripped from us and violated in a rapid series of cascading events that ultimately put our freedom and liberties in grave jeopardy. We travel to Michigan to speak with our special guest, Alison Reedy, the mother of young Dillon Reedy. The following events unfolded at Huron High School in New Boston, Michigan on December 8th, 2021.This is a case that every parent of any school child anywhere across the nation should be extremely concerned about.Imagine sending your 14-year-old son to school in the morning and by the afternoon he's been arrested, never Mirandized (according to his mother) taken in hand cuffs to the juvenile detention facility where he was processed into the system and issued a state (juvenile) criminal ID number — and forced to submit to a mugshot — ALL for something he did not do.The fact pattern showed that in a brief conversation with another student in class, Dillon was accused by the classroom teacher of making a terroristic threat to “shoot up” the school. The teacher incorrectly overheard what she thought was a threat. She later allegedly admitted that she never herself felt threatened, according to Alison. From there, common sense went AWOL.Dillon was “in big trouble”— the school secretary said to his mom — when she called to inform Alison to come to the school immediately. Wrongfully accused, wrongfully charged. Let down by a host of adults who should have been able to understand the difference between a credible threat and one that was not credible. This is a textbook case of a “rush to judgment” by over half a dozen school, municipal and county professionals and politicians, as well as the Huron School Board, any of which should have known better than to proceed with this case.Initial news reports regarding this incident were defaming, libelous and salacious and most importantly WRONG! Alison maintains that the county prosecutor was “rogue” … as the county was in possession of evidence that exonerated her son — yet, they chose willingly to suppress and overlook those crucial facts.“Negligence on all sides, a biased expulsion hearing and two off-record plea deals,” Alison stated. No one desires to see any violence on any school campus. However, this zero-tolerance policy for even uttering the words “shoot” or “gun” is an unconstitutional kneejerk reaction by the legislature and has led school administrators to make rash and very costly decisions concerning student discipline. The truth matters. Facts matter. Dillon Reedy's rights matter! If this happened to our guest and her son, certainly it can happen to you and your family. After hearing the fact pattern in this case you'll ask yourself:— Is this America?— Is the First Amendment still intact and applicable?— How can abuses such as this take place, everyday across our nation?Tune in to hear all of the explosive details. Follow our sponsors: Newsly & Feedspot. You can follow Alison on Facebook. Her group is called: My Son on the Alter. To vigorously defend against these false allegations this process has been a tremendous financial burden to her and her family. On top of the legal bills, she is attempting to raise funds for her son -- who maintains a 3.6 GPA -- so that he can realize his dream of going to college in Utah for computer science.Link to the GoFundMe Page. On this episode of Nightmare Success with Brent Cassity, we explore the shocking and deeply troubling story of Carlos Watson—a pioneering Silicon Valley entrepreneur who built OZY Media from the ground up, transforming it into a near-billion-dollar powerhouse. But in 2019, everything changed. When Watson refused to sell OZY to East Coast competitor Ben Smith (formerly of BuzzFeed)—not once, but five times—the trouble began. By 2021, as Watson prepared for a pre-IPO round, he was smeared in the press, and over the last two years, he faced a stunning indictment and conviction in Brooklyn—despite having no ties to the borough. Disturbingly, the judge in his case, Eric Komitee, had millions of dollars invested in entities tied to Watson's adversaries but never disclosed these conflicts. Award-winning filmmakers Candice Conley and Brenae Perkins have captured this unsettling saga in “The Troubling Case of Carlos Watson: Whose Son Is Next?” Duke Professor David Robinson has also analyzed the case in “Conflict, Bias, and the Railroading of Carlos Watson.” Join us as Carlos Watson shares his incredible journey, the fight against a deeply conflicted judicial process, and what lies ahead in his battle for truth. This is a story of resilience, injustice, and the ongoing struggle for fairness that you won't want to miss. Was Carlos Watson the Mastermind or a Victim of Lies? It's part two of our thirty-seven, four-part trilogy featuring the life and times of Ken McCorry. In this episode we try to find out just exactly how Ken ever managed to develop such a superb track plan with an HO-scale mainline that's one-quarter mile long for his magnificent Buffalo Line model railroad. There's also great discussion about the care and feeding of the operators for this fine railroad. You can't just walk into the Buffalo Line, pick-up a throttle and choose whichever job you'd like on any day, many of the jobs on this model railroad are highly skilled and can take quite some time to learn. It's a great podcast with all sorts of interesting information about operating a thirty-two hundred square-foot layout. Enjoy!!
There's no way a guy living in the North Atlantic off the coast of Scotland on a tiny rock could have any sort of significant impact on an organization such as the NMRA with the majority of its membership located in the lower forty-eight. Turns out nothing could be farther from the truth, not only has our next guest's hard work resulted in major changes, but in reality, his leadership has helped to improve the hobby of model railroading for everyone involved. As the NMRA continues to struggle with declining membership lack of renewals and a younger generation that sees no immediate benefit from belonging, one man stands alone against almost insurmountable odds, with a single-minded goal of making the NMRA and all its members get as much from the hobby of model railroading as possible. So grab yourself a big bowl of haggis, a tall cool glass of lukewarm sea water and enjoy!!!

Mike tells us about choosing the portion of the line that he relates to most and how video creation for his YouTube channel The Main Track provides motivation to continue learning and sharing his journey with others.Check out The Main Track YouTube channel!https://www.youtube.com/@MainTrackSupport the podcast and get yourself signed up for free giveaways by becoming a member of the ATLP Operating Crew!patreon.com/AroundTheLayoutPodcastCheck out our website: www.aroundthelayout.comFollow us on Facebook: facebook.com/aroundthelayoutSend us an email: aroundthelayout@gmail.com
It's never too late to build your dream layout. Alan Saatkamp is a testament to this, as he, at age 70, is building the railroad he's always wanted, taking the experience of multiple layout builds and moves around the country to his new home in Normal, Illinois. Alan shares those experiences, from childhood to today, and tells us how his wife encouraged his return to model railroading for a family experience. He also offers his guidance on the right time to ask your spouse for more layout real estate (results may vary!). Alan also talks about his other hobby; creating a newsletter called Prairie Ponderings, a fun and informative digital publication that he shares with subscribers around the globe.Have Prairie Ponderings delivered to your email box. Greetings adventures, and welcome back to The Crithalla Podcast, and welcome back to another episode of DMs Discuss! In this episode, the boys are escaping on a minecart from the prison they broke out of last episode. Since they are "on rails", they decide to talk about the differences between free form and railroad dungeon mastering. They go into detail about how they like to DM, and talk about how they meld free forming into their own versions of railroading. They also discuss some stories about their old games and terrible DMs.
Here comes another podcast with another great story from the AML Nation, this time we travelled all the way to Switzerland to visit with a locomotive engineer that's about to change careers and become a police officer. Transitioning from being a locomotive engineer to a member of the local constabulary will involve several changes for Robin but it quickly became obvious to us that it won't be getting in the way of his ongoing enthusiasm for the hobby. American prototype modeling is alive and well in Switzerland with an active group of dedicated modelers accurately depicting railroading in north America. Robin has enjoyed weathering locomotives and rolling stock for some time now and with an impressive collection of brass engines his modeling can stand with the best of them. Grab yourself a big bowl of shredded moving citations, a tall cool glass of day-old coffee and enjoy!!
In today's podcast we discuss "Faces of Beth" by Carver Pike, "Sam and Remi Fargo series" by Clive Cussler. Who doesn't like a party, especially one that celebrates a milestone like the 90th anniversary of Railroad Model Craftsman. We were fortunate enough to convince RMC editor Otto Vondrak to stop by the ole' AML studios and tell us some of the history of the magazine, learn about some of the previous owners, plus interesting discussions about some of the key players over the years. The magazine was started during the depression era of the thirties, when the NMRA was getting started beside some industry leaders that are still recognizable names today. Tony Koester played a big part in the seventies and was instrumental bringing Allen McClelland to the fore front of the hobby. We learn of the great contribution Bill Schaumburg made to the hobby as editor, long-time publisher Hal Carstens and a host of others that spent many years working with the magazine. This is a great podcast that we're sure you'll enjoy!!

Gawker is (still) back and (still) worse than ever — just ask Thomas Chatterton Williams. And you may not know the name “Andy Signore,” but if you do it’s probably because he was rather comprehensively #MeTooed back in 2017.
