Artificial intelligence is a big part of the software world today. Whether it's the iPhone using it to determine the most optimal way to charge the device to preserve the longevity of the battery, or an automated vehicle looking for pedestrians and other obstacles in the road, it seems that the technology is being used everywhere. As a software developer, particularly someone getting started, it can seem like a big and scary technology to get into, but Adafruit is trying to make it a little easier with the Adafruit BrainCraft HAT.As with other add-ons for the Raspberry Pi, this HAT is able to sit on top of a Raspberry Pi and add new capabilities. It is best used with the Raspberry Pi 4, and Adafruit recommends the 2GB model, though Avram is demoing with the 1GB model. In the case of the BrainCraft, the capabilities are not exactly what you might expect. It doesn't add the ability to do machine learning and AI processing, but it does add the sensors and outputs that will make the process easier for developers.The HAT has got a pair of microphones, which allows for noise cancelation, and the mic array can be used for voice and sound inputs. That input can be processed for voice commands, like with Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa, or for recognizing certain noises in an environment. It also has a screen that can be used as a viewfinder for computer vision recognition. Using TensorFlow Lite and existing models, you can easily recognize everyday objects, or a new model can be trained to recognize specialized items.To use some of these features, you will need some additional hardware. For computer vision and image recognition, you will need an additional Raspberry Pi camera. If you want to be able to hear output, either from an assistant, the image recognition, or other output, you'll also need a speaker.

Then I thought "hey lets have a Pi 4 do it for me!" The Braincraft hat has a display where we have a Chromium Kiosk window open so the adorable animation plays. Audio comes out of the onboard I2S codec for great sound - I'm using headphone/line out to a speaker Phil gave me, but it also has speaker drivers. The onboard on/off switch acts as an easy mute. Before we can start fabrication of a new design we need to design a tester - that way we can verify all the components and firmware are working they way they ought to. In this case, the Braincraft HAT https://www.adafruit.com/product/4374 has a TFT display, two microphones and two speaker outputs. We can use the speakers to test the mic's and vice versa by playing a sine wave through each speaker and then checking the sound level on the matching mic. We should see a big difference! the TFT is tested by having the text show up on it, and next up I'll add headphone jack and joystick tests. We are trying out Google Assistant on the BrainCraft HAT. The BrainCraft HAT we've designed has gone through some tests with vision recognition and TensorFlow with great success! Now we're ready to try it with voice recognition. The idea behind the BrainCraft board (stand-alone, and Pi “hat”) is that you’d be able to “craft brains” for Machine Learning on the EDGE, with Microcontrollers & Microcomputers. On ASK AN ENGINEER, our founder & engineer chatted with Pete Warden, the technical lead of the mobile, embedded TensorFlow Group on Google’s Brain team about what would be ideal for a board like this. And here’s a first look! We’ve started to design a BrainCraft HAT for Raspberry Pi and other linux computers. It has a 240×240 TFT display for inference output, slot for Camera connector cable for imaging projects, a 5 way joystick and button for UI input, left and right microphones, stereo headphone, stereo speaker out, three RGB dotstar LEDs, two 3 pin STEMMA connectors on PWM pins so they can drive NeoPixels or servos, and grove/stemma/qwiic I2C port. This should let people build a wide range of audio/video AI projects while also allowing easy plug in of sensors and robotics!
