Phil Hornby is an experienced product leader, coach, and technologist whose mission is to help product leaders think clearly, make strong decisions, and take powerful action that drives high-impact outcomes. He's a regular speaker at product events and is co-host of the “Talking Roadmaps” YouTube channel and podcast. If Phil were asked to distill product management down to its core, he'd tell us, “We're paid to have an opinion.” Not simply putting a ‘licked finger to the wind,’ but trusting your experience and intuition to make high-quality decisions. Ah, and also to remember: there's a difference between a high-quality decision and the “right” decision. There's no way to guarantee that we make the right decision, Phil says, but there're plenty of ways we can improve our odds. Here’s what we learned: Empowerment Is ‘Making Decisions that Stick' At its most fundamental level, doing Product is decision making, Phil says. “That that’s like the whole heart of it. When we use the term empowered to describe product teams, we talk about their ability to make decisions that stick. If you can’t make a decision stick, then you’re not empowered. It’s really boiled down to this: empowerment is at the heart of all product work. Trust = Character + Competence Trust is an essential component in any relationship. Perhaps even more so in the often high-stakes world of product management. Phil's hypothesis is that high-quality decision making cannot occur in its absence. “Trust comes down to two core components,” he says, “character and competence. You want others to look at you and say, ‘That’s someone I can trust.' That’s the character…. Then there’s competence: ‘Do I think you can make it? Have you got the skills to make that high-quality decision? And those two things combine to provide trust. ‘We're Paid to Have an Opinion' – Evidence-informed Decisionmaking Phil talks about being evidence informed versus data driven, because “data can tell you anything. As product managers,” he adds, “I can massage the data to show whatever the heck I want it to do. “We absolutely need to bring data into our decision-making process,” Phil continues. “Data is a form of quantitative evidence, but then we need the anecdotes and other feedback to complete the equation. But we’re humans, we also have intuition. And, dare I say it, we are paid to have an opinion – to understand our markets, to bring that tacit knowledge, which some people call product sense, and apply it to the context of the situation we’re in.” Catch the entire episode with Phil Hornby and learn even more about: His 6-step process for raising the odds of making a high-quality decision. How product roadmaps reflect your team's decision tree of what to do and when. Why strong opinions are valuable, as long as we're open to the opinions of others. Be careful what you wish for. That's how I'm feeling about the Government giving Christchurch an exemption from the new housing intensification rules, which would have enabled three, three-storey properties to be built on single sections anywhere in the city. Instead, that level of intensification is going to be limited to certain parts of town, including the city centre, Church Corner, Riccarton, Hornby, Linwood, Shirley, Merivale, Edgeware, and Papanui. But I think the Government is just letting Christchurch shoot itself in the foot. Because we will, eventually, come to regret it. Mayor Phil Mauger is delighted though, because the city council pushed back and claimed we were doing enough already on the intensification front. A few months back, the council agreed to extend the areas where it would be happy to have medium density zoning with three, three storey buildings per section. Then wrote to the Government saying it thought it had gone far enough and requested an exemption from more intensification in other parts of the city. The council has got what it asked for, and I think we will live to regret it. Because it's only going to mean one thing: the city expanding beyond where it is now. Which is why I've always said that we need to get over ourselves and accept that greater housing density is the only way forward, especially when we consider the population growth happening here. And, with the city growing, the options are either growing outwards or upwards. Whether we want to keep chewing up land and building more to the south, more to the north, and more to the west; or whether we do more with the space we're occupying at the moment. Unfortunately, the lack of foresight at our city council —and the government buying-into that lack of foresight— means we're going to continue expanding. Chewing up good land. All because we have this old-hat idea that everybody needs and wants the quarter-acre section. But we've got a housing affordability problem in this country and, if you want your kids to be able to afford to buy their own place, it's not going to be somewhere with a big backyard. So we need more apartments and townhouses – the places you get with greater housing density. What's more, putting limits on housing intensification in Christchurch is going to mean more and more houses being built in places like Rolleston and Prebbleton. Which are not in Christchurch, they're in the Selwyn district, and that will mean more and more people travelling into the city every day, using Christchurch's roading infrastructure and not paying a bean towards it. Another reason why this limit on housing intensification in Christchurch is a bad move.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Nick Hornby has never written the phone book, to use an old expression. But if he did, I'd read it. Hornby is one of those writers who elicits unbridled enthusiasm from his unabashed admirers. Count me in, thanks to books like High Fidelity, Fever Pitch and About A Boy. He always had a love of reading and writing and music and sports. But turning it into a lifetime of books and a way to make a living? That was more than a few years in coming. But come it did. How fortunate are we.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Clare Hornby's 14-year-old fashion brand, Me+Em, has hit its stride. From 2021 to 2022, it grew its revenue from £46 million to £80 million. What's more, it's been profitable for seven years. That's despite selling exclusively direct-to-consumer, when, it seems, every digital native brand is falling back on wholesale partners. "It was when I started building out the team that you started to see the [business's] acceleration," Hornby said on the latest episode of the Glossy Podcast. It's worth noting that MatchesFashion investor Highland Europe bought a minority stake in the company in early 2022. Me+Em, which specializes in "flattering, functional, forever" women's clothing, has opened seven stores in the U.K., where it is headquartered. But now, its focus is on U.S. expansion. Starting in March, it will open two stores in NYC, followed by one in the Hamptons, in rapid succession. The plan is to follow those up with fourth and fifth locations soon after. “We like you to bring in your dog, bring in your kid and bring in your partner, and we like you to dwell,” Hornby said. “As a result, our stores [form] communities, all by themselves.”
Helen Fielding, creator of the Bridget Jones novels and films, and Gill Hornby, author of the bestseller Miss Austen, join Sotheby's books specialist Kalika Sands and novelist Kate Mosse for a conversation in partnership with Sotheby's and held at Sotheby's in London about the enduring appeal of the 19th-century novelist Jane Austen. Fielding explains that when it came to turning her newspaper column about Bridget into a book, it seemed natural to borrow the tried and tested plot of Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Hornby reveals how she was inspired by real events when she created her fictional account of Austen's life. They discuss whether marriage or spinsterhood was the better option for a woman at that time, and debate exactly how we should interpret Austen's portrayal of Mrs Bennet, a figure desperate to marry off her four daughters, in Pride and Prejudice.
