Right before the Pandemic hit back in March, host, Brenton Miles, sat down with Leeland Mooring and had an incredible conversation about his journey in worship and music. We delayed these episodes in light of current events, but are thrilled to be releasing them now in 2 parts over the next 2 weeks. Leeland came to the forefront of the worship music world in 2004 and debuted their first project, the revolutionary Sound of Melodies, in 2006. Fast forward to now with four GRAMMY® nominations and eight GMA Dove Award® nominations under their belts, Leeland has become one of the most important voices in a new generation of worship music. Their lives, ministry, and music are a true extension of their passion to simply worship God personally and in community. In episode 121, Leeland shares about his early childhood, his experience with the ministry as a kid, church planting, and how he developed his writing. “I don’t want to write songs filled with my thoughts about God,” Mooring shares about his music motivations. “I want to write songs filled with what God thinks about everything. It isn’t my words or ideas about my circumstances that change me, but it’s when I use my voice to speak the words of life that come from Jesus’ mouth that change me.” Don’t miss this powerful interview! In episode 119, we are honored to be joined by world-class singer, songwriter, producer and dancer, Jonathan Traylor! After releasing his music independently for several years, in 2019 Jonathan inked a record deal with Motown Gospel. The partnership has given him a larger platform for his powerful messages and a brighter spotlight for his unique performance style. “I want to do something different in gospel music that people have never seen or heard before. I want to encourage younger people and help raise a whole new generation of worship leaders that are bold, that are fearless, that are authentic, that are raw...I want to help raise a generation of wild worshippers that don't hold back anything and worship with an intense passion and fire.” - Jonathan Traylor And Jonathan Traylor’s DEBUT album is exactly that! His debut project on Motown Gospel/Capitol CMG, The Unknown, is an innovative playlist of songs and videos to be released over the course of 2020. Chronicling Traylor's journey of blindfolded faith and ultimate acceptance in Christ, The Unknown is a worthy introduction to the singer, songwriter, and dancer who has caught the attention of fans everywhere. If you’re a “production guy” involved in a church, it’s crucial that you understand that before anything else, you are a worship leader. You have the power to set the tone before anyone else walks in - the power to freak out or sing out - the power to curate a safe, healthy, vulnerable, freeing environment for people to pursue presence over presentation - or the opposite - cynical, stressful, “I’m in charge” “hate the musicians” atmosphere that breeds contempt and lifeless church environments with quick turnover and a lonely life. It’s entirely up to you. In episode 108, Brenton Miles shares his experience running sound in and out of the church, and what more sound teams can be doing to empower their worship team. The console is just another instrument, and the band and production crew are ALL the “worship team.” Don’t miss this powerful episode made specifically for anyone involved in church production! We hope this episode brings encouragement and practical tips to strengthen your worship teams. Listen in and share! --- If you like what you hear, please leave us a review! It’s not uncommon to hear Coldplay played in soundcheck at church or to hear comments such as “That part sounds just like Coldplay, I love it,” or “Coldplay is life,” throughout the week. My guess is that if you are a worship musician reading this, there is a good chance that you like Coldplay…and you should because they are a great band! So, then what’s the problem? Well, with Coldplay, absolutely nothing. All they have done is stay true to themselves and continue evolving with each record. Our perspective and digestion? That’s a different story. In episode 89, Brenton Miles, Jordan Holt and Libby Lewis share their feedback on Coldplay and their effect on modern worship. Has it helped, or hurt the progression of modern worship? How do you find your unique worship sound?! In episode 67, Brenton Miles and Jordan Holt (guitarist for Kari Jobe) cover 5 ways worship leaders and churches can begin to discover their individual sound in worship. We have plenty of churches singing covers, plenty of churches matching what Hillsong and Bethel are doing, but is that what God really wants from your church? God created us differently for a reason! And it’s time that we take that notion a lot more seriously. We owe it to the world as Christians to be unique, to be inspiring. People are looking at the way we do things and ask themselves if they really want the life we live. So what changes are we willing to make to get their attention? We're back with another powerful episode about overcoming anxiety, specifically within the church, our teams, and as musicians. In this episode, Jordan Holt, Libby Lewis, and Brenton Miles sit down to discuss some of their personal struggles with anxiety, overcoming fear, shame, and how replacing anxiety with truth, faith, rest, joy, and delegation can lead to freedom! There's no question, anxiety is rampant in our culture, and even in the church... but as musicians, sometimes it can seem even more overwhelming because of our direct tie to the supernatural thru art and the creative process. It's imperative that we must lean on the word of God as our foundation of truth and believe that when God says "be anxious for nothing" - He has our best interest at heart. In Episode 50, Brenton Miles sits down with his friend Andrew Holt, a worship leader, songwriter, and the Worship Pastor at The Belonging Co in Nashville, TN. Building a team is one thing, but building a community of family members has a completely different approach as a leader... and Andrew has done an incredible job. With many professional level musicians and touring artists on the team at The Belonging, the schedules can be pretty crazy at times, but there's one thing that stands out... there's a unified spirit within the team. Whether you're a producer, session player, or touring musician, wherever you go, there's a community and family right there with you, a phone call away, text away, or at times, even at your show ready to stand with you and pray over you. It goes way beyond the services on Sunday or Tuesday. It's family. 24/7. In this episode, we talk a bit about Andrew's journey as a worship leader, how he got started at The Belonging, his experience co-writing songs for church, and some of the important lessons he's learned over the past few years. In this episode, Brenton Miles and Libby Lewis sit down for some real talk on what it is to serve the local church, how to best serve a team, and learning how to communicate in a way that elevates others and edifies the church. We all know "that guy" (or gal) who thinks a little too highly of their gift for the world to see, or worse, those who tear others down to build themselves up... But in this episode, we're going to break down what it means to be self-aware (in a good way) and how to set boundaries and guide rails up in your life to protect your blindspots and help you achieve building trust and longevity with your team. It's something every musician deals with. As creatives, our art is an expression of what's on the inside. And whether good or bad, joyful or sad, that expression is sometimes the only way to communicate our truest of emotions. With that, sharing our art or creative expression can be done with a couple different approaches. One of insecurity. Or one of confidence. Being confident in who you are comes from a secure place of knowing who you are on the inside. Identity is something we talk a lot about on this podcast because it's probably the most important piece to unlocking our deepest and broadest potential. When you know who you are on the inside, there's no room for insecurity. And you can create music and worship how God designed you to worship - in Spirit AND in Truth. In this episode, we're back with our discussion panel (Brenton Miles, Libby Lewis, and Jordan Holt) explaining some of our lessons along the way as worship leaders and musicians. In this episode, Brenton Miles sits down with Worship Online's Libby Lewis to discuss her personal journey through a tough family situation at church. Sometimes churches split, there is disunity, slander, and things not of God that happen as a result of insecurity, fear, or sinful human nature. That said, there's no perfect church because the Church is made up of imperfect people. But in this episode, we talk about some key ways to heal, rest, forgive, and love... no matter the heartache. God is the ultimate redeemer... which means... he REDEEMS... He has the power to heal and set us free from any paid caused by relationships, and ultimately can give us the power to forgive and restore previously broken relationships with people and with the church. First of all - THANK YOU to all of our amazing listeners who've jumped on and given us iTunes Reviews! - And a special shoutout to all of our winners thru the month of April! Enjoy your Guitar Center gift cards and thanks for spreading the love for Worship Online! In Episode 22 Brenton Miles (worship leader) and Libby Lewis (worship leader and staff member with Worship Online) sit down to discuss remaining faithful within a team even in the waiting. In a culture where talent is put on a pedestal and everything tends to be a microwave/immediate gratification mindset - it's important to remember that when it comes to the CHURCH (family, community, teams, leaders), God's timing is everything. Don't ever second guess His timing when you may not be in the place where you feel the most "power" - Many times, we're tested in areas of "less significance" to teach us humility, influence, serving & stewarding what God is doing in a place, and the ability to take on any role with a good attitude... SO DON'T DESPISE THE WAITING... OWN IT! Press in to the power of God and find out what he's saying in the waiting... because he's there. And many (if not most) of the HUGE lessons learned along the way are in the waiting or quiet spaces in life... not on the stage. In Episode 20, we tackle the big question of whether or not musicians in church should be paid... this is a big one. And you might be surprised by some of our dialogue in this one... We discuss some of the positive and negative affects that paying (or not paying) musicians can have on a worship team. At the end of the day, how are we best supporting and inspiring growth, community, and unity within the local church to the best of our ability and our leadership? For this episode, we thought we'd bring in our panel of worship leaders and musicians with Worship Online - Libby Lewis, Brenton Miles, and Shalon Palmer - Laughter is inevitable when you get these three together... it's also key to a healthy conversation about something that could be considered controversial... so enjoy the craziness. In Episode 17, Brenton Miles, Worship Leader, Producer, & Co-Host sits down with Libby Lewis, Worship Leader, Songwriter, Vocal Coach, & Worship Online team member to talk about how to be ready for anything in a worship set or service. It's common where worship leaders and teams have to be ready for last minutes changes, songs, keys, and sometimes even different genres from what we're commonly used to! In this episode, we talk about how to build a relationship with your pastor to know their direction, habits, and communication styles to know where they're headed even if it's not the pre-communicated roadmap. Unity is key, and so is serving your pastors. As a musician, team leader, or band director, being ready for anything is a huge part of flow and eliminating distractions in a worship set. This came from a question that was e-mailed to us from worship leaders/pastors from around the country. We talk about the difference between the two mindsets... where performance can tend to have a standard of perfection, whereas worship is a posture of the heart for obeying God and serving people. In Episode 13, we bring you another #weekinreverse episode. This time, Brenton shares a brief version of his story as it relates to creativity and his musical background. Brenton was on a tour bus at a young age with his Father, who sang in a Southern Gospel quartet all throughout Brenton's younger years. His Dad, also a drummer, inspired him to pursue music and he became an accomplished drummer. Through high school he began playing in different bands and getting into recording and producing his own music and also spending his afternoons at a local radio station working as a DJ. Soon after, he was on staff at a church as a Worship Leader and, from there, went on to write worship songs and travel as a singer/songwriter. Now, he's the frontman of Cor Captis, host of the Sunday Morning Drive, and the Reverse Podcast.
