Age-gap relationships defy linear time. They produce relational paradoxes that neither culture nor psychology fully resolves. In conventional discourse, we treat age as a number, a simple demographic variable. Yet when examined through the lenses of consciousness studies (Hawkins), holographic reality (Bentov), dialogical exploration (Bohm), trauma theory (Rothschild & Carnes), and nonduality (Krishnamurti), age mutates into something far deeper: a psychological currency.

If you've hung around Jesuits and Jesuit organizations long enough, you surely have come in contact with the phrase cura personalis. In short, practicing cura personalis means caring for the whole person: body, mind and spirit. It's an invitation to ask more questions, deeper questions, about who we are and where we're going and what unique tools and experiences we might need to get there. You know cura personalis. But have you ever heard of cura personalis mission-driven, organizationally-minded little sibling, cura apostolica? Cura apostolica means a care for the apostolate. This principle—like care for the fullness of a person—means recognizing and caring for the fullness of a mission. What is an organization meant to do? How can it persist in the work of shepherding a mission as time and circumstances change? I'll confess that I was far more knowledgeable of and comfortable with cura personalis. Cura apostolica seems a bit esoteric, relevant only to CEOs and HR departments. What has it got to do with me in my daily life? Well, as today's guest, Jesuit Fr. Matt Carnes insist, a lot. In fact, cura apostolica and cura personalis go hand-in-hand; they're two sides of the same coin. Understanding and embodying one leads us to better live out the other. Fr. Carnes is the Vice President for Mission and Ministry at Santa Clara University, as well as the Executive Director of the Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education and Professor of Political Science. Prior to joining Santa Clara University, he was an associate professor at Georgetown University in the Department of Government and the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, and he served as Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs in the School of Foreign Service and as the Director of the Center for Latin American Studies. Most important to today's conversation, Fr. Matt is the editor of an upcoming book from Georgetown University Press entitled “Leadership Lessons from the Jesuits: Cura Apostolica and the Mission-Driven Organization.” It's due out sometime next year. I had a chance to read an early copy—and I found myself inspired by how cura apostolica can revolutionize how we approach our mission-driven work. I hope you get a sense of that today, and leave inspired to return to your own singular part of our shared mission. Aaron Carnes is an expert on ska, but is self-aware enough that his book (and podcast) are called In Defense of Ska. Like Christian rock, when folks admit to liking ska they often brace for being mocked. Aaron knows something about both worlds since he was only allowed to listen to CCM growing up. This conversation is wide-ranging, covering the roots of ska (Madness didn't invent it), the waves of reinvention it has survived and how it was put to use by Christians to good effect (Five Iron Frenzy, The Israelites, Runforyerlife) and questionable effect (The OC Supertones, B.O.B.). Plus a little story about Sonseed.----Do you have a Christian rock story to tell? Want to respond to this episode? The Human Intimacy Podcast #80: The Hidden Cost of Secrets in Relationships In this episode of the Human Intimacy Podcast, Dr. Kevin Skinner and MaryAnn Michaelis, LCSW, unpack the complex world of secrecy in relationships—why we keep secrets, what it does to us internally, and how it affects intimacy with our partners. They explore the hidden weight of secrecy and self-deception, showing how carrying secrets impacts not only relationships but also personal health, emotional well-being, and even the body. The conversation highlights: The psychology of secrecy — why people hide, lie, or deceive in the name of "protection." The toll on the body and mind — from anxiety and ulcers to exhaustion and emotional distance. The role of shame and fear — how vulnerability and the fear of rejection fuel secrecy. The ripple effects on intimacy — why hiding erodes trust and connection over time. Steps toward healing — the importance of accountability, support networks, and learning to share in safe, structured ways. Dr. Skinner and MaryAnn also discuss research insights (Pennebaker, Levine, Carnes, Lemke, Brown) and real-world examples, weaving in practical tools for couples and individuals navigating the painful terrain of secrecy and betrayal. Listeners will leave with a deeper understanding of why secrecy is so destructive—and hopeful strategies for stepping into authenticity, vulnerability, and healthier intimacy.

Clinical data holds that unresolved trauma rewires relational neural circuitry, triggering threat responses in safe contexts (Carnes, Rothschild). Quantum metaphysics and Thomas Campbell's Theory of Everything reveal that every avoidance, deception, or shortcut adds entropy to this relational matrix—an energetic entropic residue that buys you momentary ease and costs you long-term clarity and coherence.
