This week we end season 4 with recording artist, producer, and songwriter Galen Crew in Nashville, TN. Galen's music is known for its dream-like quality which often features deep yet whimsical themes and seems to emanate from a different world. He is a huge fan of Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and other fantasy writers and if you imagine the mysterious Grimm Brothers fairy tale collections being somehow transformed into modern pop songs - you'll start to get idea of the imagery, depth and layers within Galen's music. Although an American artist, Galen's music went viral in China and he has become a major pop star in that country. We are discussing writing music more like fairytales than mainstream music, working with legendary songwriter Roger Cook and building a huge fanbase and touring in China as an independent artist. Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. In this episode we discuss: *Working with legendary songwriter Roger Cook. *Writing music more like fairytales than mainstream music. *Going viral in China. *Building a fanbase and being able to tour exclusively in China. *Touring with and producing music for Phil Joel from Newsboys. *Authenticity. *Value relationships. *Having integrity as a producer. *Demo and master recording rates. *Have identity and security in yourself, not the industry. *Diversification of skillset. *www.galencrew.com *www.music.163.com in China. BIO: Galen Crew is an American recording artist, producer, and songwriter from Nashville, Tennessee. His music is known for its dream-like quality which often features deep yet whimsical themes and seems to emanate from a different world. At his core, Galen is a storyteller. He crafts stories that pull from various art forms….citing fantasy authors such as Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Herman Hesse as having inspired him just as much as the Beatles, Coldplay, and John Mayer. Imagine if the mysterious Grimm Brothers fairy tale collections were somehow transformed into modern pop songs – and you'll start to get idea of the imagery, depth, and layers within Galen's music. Having played in various bands throughout his life, Galen had always been primarily the songwriter and guitarist. But at age 19, he began writing unique material that didn't fit with any of the bands he was playing with, and he tentatively stepped out as a vocalist himself. The first few demos he recorded as a solo artist immediately caught the attention of Roger Cook, legendary British songwriter (“I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing”; “Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress”). Galen and Roger have now written over 100 songs together. One of them, titled “Sleepyhead” – a unique story song that is something of a medieval myth or fairy tale – organically went viral in China. Upon discovering that his music was gaining millions upon millions of streams on Chinese music platforms, Galen toured the country twice – and found that although he had never been to Asia before, his fans knew the words to his songs in every city he performed in. Galen describes the experience as being simultaneously surreal and inspiring. In fall 2016 he teamed up with Hover Coalition Music.

Greg Laurie from "A New Beginning" (heard weekdays at 10am & 7pm on WFIL) calls in to discuss his brand new book, Billy Graham: The Man I Knew (Salem's Book of the Month for May). Laurie, who lived in Summit, NJ for a number of years as a youth, talks about what inspired him to write the book, his hopes for those who read it, and some neat tidbits as well. Laurie, longtime Senior Pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, CA (and other locations), who himself has spoken to millions at Harvest Crusades (including in Philadelphia), also shares a personal example of a humorous and powerful interaction (one of many in the book) revealing the "everydayness" of Graham. Laurie also discusses two other similar books he wrote in recent years--Steve McQueen: The Salvation of an American Icon and Johnny Cash: The Redemption of an American Icon--including an inspirational story of McQueen's conversion to Christianity towards the end of his life with the help of Pastor Graham. The first Thursday of each month--except when it's a special day like Maundy Thursday this year, in which case it gets bumped back a week--the guys & gals in the WFIL audience square off in a battle of wits never seen anywhere else...on WFIL...it's called "Trivia Thursday" and the rules are simple: 1) Listeners are invited to call 1 800 560-WFIL (9345) (and sometimes use the text line at 610-500-DOVE (3683) to answer various & sundry trivia questions we toss out. If you call and guess an answer correctly, you score a point for your team. Congratulations! You've helped your team, now have a seat and let someone else shine :) (no "Jeopardy James"-types here). 2) If you call and give an incorrect answer, no worries. You don't cost your team any points, and you're allowed to try again--on a subsequent question. 3) If it's a multiple-answer question (such as taking guesses as to what's on a Top 5 or 10 list), if your first guess is correct, you can take a second guess...and if that one is correct too, you can give a third guess. Maximum points you can score is three, otherwise known as "The Barry Rule." [On a previous show "Barry from Southwest Philadelphia" called and named a then-legal six answers on a question about Eagles starting quarterbacks since 1980 (this is when Jalen Hurts was named to start in place of Carson Wentz). The next contestant, about to go on the air, heard her guesses being taken and was bummed about it and hung up...so to minimize that happening in the future, we thought adjusting things to a maximum of three might be a good idea :)] Presented herein the podcast today, a semi-epic, back-and-forth struggle for championship-ness...and a result we haven't seen in a long time, if ever... Thanks to Bernard (Philadelphia), Kathy (Plymouth Meeting), Bob (via the text line), Steve (MontCo), Barry (SW Philly), Gail (Philadelphia), Annette (Norristown), Leona (Philadelphia) and Ann (Oaklyn/Audubon) for chiming in as the hour unfolded. Special props to Leona for nailing a clutch three (we'll leave it there...details in the podcast :)) Featured music: Better Than I Found It / PHIL JOEL See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Actress, producer & filmmaker Roma Downey gives the show a call from her home in California to give insight about her new film Resurrection. The film chronicles the events surrounding the Crucifixion and Resurrection (and beyond) primarily through the eyes of the disciples, including what life may very well have been like for them post-Resurrection--the dangers they faced, the persecution, and the growth of the church despite opposition from Caiaphas & the ruling elders. During the conversation, Downey says, "We hope this movie helps spread the gospel. Maybe somebody who doesn't even know about anything about Jesus might watch the movie because they hear it's a good movie and for the first time are exposed to the story. So we just pray for transformed hearts." She adds, “We haven't been able to go to church together. We haven't been able to be in community for awhile. I'm hoping this film sets a fire in people's hearts. It's great preparation for and celebration of Easter.” That her hope is to encourage should not be totally surprising. Downey was nominated for multiple Emmy & Golden Globe awards for her role as the angel Monica on the CBS series Touched By An Angel for nine seasons, with her character primarily one who encouraged. Downey also produced the mini-series The Bible for the History Channel and been involved with numerous other media efforts. Resurrection is currently available at www.discoveryplus.com. Also, Tim shares a special Easter cookie recipe he came across years ago. It's designed to teach about Easter as you go through the preparation and baking process. Find it below the "Featured" listings. Featured sports clip: Joe Girardi (Phillies manager) Featured clip: Singer/songwriter Phil Joel (Newsboys, Zealand Worship, solo) Featured music: Better Than I Found It / PHIL JOEL, He Came, He Saw, He Conquered / PETRA Easter Story Cookies You need: 1 c. whole pecans 1 tsp. vinegar 3 egg whites Pinch of salt 1 c. sugar Zipper baggie Wooden spoon Tape and bible Wax paper Preheat over to 300 degrees F. Place pecans in zipper baggie and let children beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested, he was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read John 19:1-3. Let each child smell the vinegar. Put 1 tsp. vinegar into mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross, he was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30. Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave his life to give us life. Read john 10:10-11. Sprinkle a little salt into each child's hand. Let theme taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus' followers, and the bitterness of our own sin. Read Luke 23:27. So far the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1 c. sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because he loves us. He wants us to know and belong to him. Read Psalms 34:8 and John 3:16. Beat the mixture with a mixer on high speed for 12-15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God's eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3. Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto wax paper covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus' body was laid. Read Matt 27:65-66. Put the cookie sheet in the oven; close the door and turn the oven OFF. Give each child a piece of tape and let them seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus' tomb was sealed. Read Matt 27:-65-66. GO TO BED! Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus' followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read John 16:20 & 22. On Easter morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Easter, Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read Matt 28:1-9. HE HAS RISEN! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
John Fuller, co-host of the Focus On The Family daily radio broadcast (heard weekdays at 7am & 830pm on WFIL) for over two decades, calls in with thoughts on the Easter message--including that even on the darkest days, God is still at work. Along the way John shares how he has seen the Easter theme of "death to life" play out in the culture and in his personal life over the past year. We're also joined by actor Corbin Bernsen (LA Law, Major League film series) to talk about "The Last Time We Spoke," a brand new film he co-stars in with Melissa Gilbert (Little House On The Prairie), with forgiveness as a main theme. It's so easy for us to get too busy and to allow too many voices to divide our attention. As we allow more of this clutter, it becomes more difficult to focus on what is important. It is harder to allow God to play the role in our lives that he is meant to. Phil Joel wrote the song Sailing Speed talking about slowing down, clearing the clutter, and making room for our relationship with God. Phil also shares about creating this EP on his own, a challenge he had yet to take on, and his heart behind this project.
The irrepressible radio staple and good guy introduces us to his latest solo effort, "Better Than I Found It". We talk simplicity, longevity & The Beatles with the one and only chief export of New Zealand.

Phil Joel, bassist and vocalist with the iconic Christian band Newsboys for over a dozen years, solo artist, author, and frontman for the band Zealand has sworn off social media. No Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, Youtube, Qzone, Weibo, Reddit, Flickr, Tumblr, Meetup or Odnoklassniki, which, by the way has 71 million active monthly users. Joel can’t be found on any of them. Zip. Nada. None How can anyone who hopes to connect with listeners and fans as a musician possibly ignore all social media, and further, WHY would they choose to not participate in the billions of daily Tweets, memes, and posts that fuel the social frenzy of our collective cultural experience? Well, the answers may surprise you, or, you may find yourself questioning your own obsession with likes and shares once you hear them from the totally Christ-centered and family oriented Phil Joel, a classy guy from Down Under New Zealand who says he’s definitely not “anti-social media,” but who has made a solid choice to trust God to be his best press agent and promoter. Phil Joel’s had the same blond dreads since he was 17 and he’s not lost his youthful zeal for the Lord despite millions of miles and millions of fans. We talk about so many great things on this episode - - we have some laughs and go deep, as well, into his new book and Zealand’s new album Liberated. I know you’re going to really love this chat with my new friend from Down Under, Phil Joel.

Guest: Michael Tait of NewsboysAbout NewsBoysFor more than three decades, Newsboys have been defying the odds. After initially forming in Australia, they landed on American soil with only pennies to their name and eventually became one of the biggest bands in Christian music history. Today, Newsboys have sold more than 10 million units spanning 23 recordings. In addition, they’ve amassed eight Gold certifications, 33 #1 radio hits, four GRAMMY® nominations, two American Music Award nominations and multiple Dove Awards. Through the years, the faces of Newsboys have changed, but the mission has remained the same: One band. One heart. One brotherhood. Perhaps nothing embodies this mantra more than their current iteration as former members Peter Furler and Phil Joel join Michael Tait, Duncan Phillips, Jeff Frankenstein and Jody Davis for a supersized season of touring and recording that’s ultimately resulted in a brand-new studio project, aptly titled United (FairTrade Services). The history-making reunion first began to take shape when the current lineup invited Furler to sing on the band’s worship single, “The Cross Has The Final Word.” Still, none of them knew the fire that collaboration would spark. “When you’re working together, you start to have conversations, and we started chatting about what it would look like to have two eras of the band tour at the same time,” Furler explains. “Before it started, we didn’t know if it was going to work or how it was going to work.”This initial uncertainty was due, in part, to the continued success the band has enjoyed since Tait took the helm in 2009. With signature songs like “We Believe,” “Born Again” and Platinum-certified mega hit “God’s Not Dead,” which birthed a film franchise of the same name, Newsboys have continued to collect career-defining accolades at full speed ahead. Instead, the idea of the blockbuster lineup was birthed naturally through their longtime friendship. After a nine-year absence, Furler—a driving force behind iconic Newsboys hits like “He Reigns,” “Entertaining Angels” and “Shine”—along with key former lyricist, vocalist and bassist Phil Joel, returned to the stage for a strategic limited run of “Newsboys United” dates. Heading into the first show, the six members were nervous, unsure of the outcome. However, their debut as a supergroup delivered a clear verdict. The combination of Newsboys—past and present—together again on one stage was unstoppable, and fans clamored for more. The band officially reunited on the highly-anticipated Newsboys United Tour in 2018 before headlining 2019’s Winter Jam Tour Spectacular—Christian music’s largest annual tour—and then joining Michael W. Smith on a 10-city worship trek. Collectively, they’ve now performed more than 150 shows nationwide. It was only a matter of time before they found themselves in the studio together again.“No one had a clue that this Newsboys United smashup would even work, and now who can deny it’s been nothing short of fantastic?” Tait remarks. “I often say God works in mysterious ways and mischievous ways. It’s been an absolute pleasure and joy.”Known for their unparalleled live shows, where the energy is at a fever pitch, the drum kit rotates, and the production is unmatched, Newsboys’ expanded lineup represents the same ideals on stage that the band members harnessed in the studio for United, where themes of friendship, unity and diversity organically emerged.“In a very un-united United States these days, it’s powerful to see a Caucasian and an African-American on the stage speaking the same message in a unified way,” Tait asserts. Furler and Tait’s unified front on stage translates to tape as they effortlessly trade lead vocals on the album, blending both the past and the present.Along with Geoff Duncan, Furler steered the production reigns and returned as a lyricist for the band, co-penning four of the collection’s 10 tracks. The funky groove of “Love One Another,” which he co-wrote, features guest vocals from former dcTalk member Kevin Max, while tracks like the worshipful “Set Me Ablaze,” originally recorded by Bethel Music, and soaring lead single “Greatness Of Our God” continue Newsboys’ rich history of recording songs that resonate with fans of all ages.“‘Greatness Of Our God’ comes off live like a freight train. It’s powerful,” offers Tait of the radio hit. “As believers, it’s important to constantly be reminded of the greatness of our God, and the song says it perfectly.”“When they hear the music, I hope it’s not as preachy as it is practical—things that have worked in our lives that we’ve found freedom in, like freedom in Christ,” he adds. “We just want to love people through the music.”For Furler, selections like “Only The Son (Yeshua)” and “Fearless” helped personally define the band’s unexpected evolution. “I think, for me, it’s not so much the songs themselves,” he reflects, “but these songs represent moments when we realized it was going to work vocally.”Both frontmen consistently compliment one another. “Mike’s an amazing singer. He’s one of the best on the planet,” Furler emphasizes. “We had to try to figure out how our voices were going to blend.”“There was a selflessness in making the record,” Tait adds. “When Pete sings, it’s magical.”The magic of two lead singers, six life-long friends and one rock-solid mission form the undercurrent for both the album and the band. “Recording this Newsboys United album did so much more than just bring two eras of the band together,” Furler observes. “It has made us one in spirit, purpose and love.”No matter who’s taking the lead, Newsboys knows what they’ve forged over 30-plus years is rare. It goes beyond music, awards and notoriety. No matter what stage they’re gracing, Newsboys will be standing tall as a symbol of unity, defying the odds, together.newsboys.comNewsboys are coming in town!!! We compare Woodstock: the music festival that took the world by storm and the Asbury Revival, a much lesser known event that was key in starting the Jesus movement. What are some key aspects of these two events that were significant enough to start movements and change the world?
Ep 73 features Phil Joel, notably of the bands Newsboys, Zealand, and also a prolific solo music career, who has just released his first book Redwoods and Whales.

Since the advent of social media and in the age of likes, followers, comments, and digital connections, the mental health of a student has been impacted significantly. Imagine being an adolescent and never feeling good enough because someone else is always going to appear better than them? Hosts Jeff Eckart and Jayson Brewer speak to Clinton Faupel from Remedy Live, an online suicide prevention and crisis chat resource for students. They also speak with Phil Joel of Zealand Worship and Newsboys United about his new book, Redwoods and Whales: Becoming Who You Actually Are.

Our Famous Friday Show kicks off with a couple clips from yesterday’s convo with Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty (just to bring Joe Harnett—aka the hardest working producer in Philadelphia radio between 4pm-5pm—who was out of the office yesterday, up to speed on what he missed). The podcast of the full interview is available at wfil.com (just like this one). Next up, Phil Joel of the Newsboys checks in from North Carolina—having just completed a sound check for tonight’s WinterJam tour date—to chat up the Newsboys UNITED album, tour, and contest WFIL has on our home page (you could win a trip for 2 to the Chicago area to see Newsboys UNITED in concert next month). Phil also gets into his brand new book, Redwoods & Whales, which releases on April 16. Phil tells the story of his unexpected encounter with a beached whale, as well as with giant redwoods in California, his writings about that growing into what eventually became Redwoods & Whales. On a related note, Phil was given the green light by his publisher to give away the first five chapters of the book to anyone who’d like it. Simply text the word “BOOK” to 82149 to receive them. Brian Smith, Manager of Broadcasting & Media Services for the Philadelphia Flyers also joins the show for a segment to talk the Flyers’ playoff hopes and the announcement this week that the team will participate in the 2019 Global Series this fall. This includes playing the team’s first-ever regular season game outside North America in the Flyers’ 52+ year history as they open the 2019-2020 season in the Czech Republic v the Chicago Blackhawks. A brief but fun “Now THAT’s Punny” segment caps off the program today.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Seele Editor, Ally chats with New Zealand musician Phil Joel. Phil is the former bassist for the Christian rock group, Newsboys. Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Phil lives in Nashville, TN with his family. But now, he has his own band Zealand. This fall, Zealand will be opening for Newsboys on their fall tour.
Our guests today address the key to finding hope in a sometimes dark world with an encouraging message for every generation; from teenagers to Baby Boomers. Pastor Max Lucado is a New York Times bestselling author who has a new book called Unshakeable Hope, in which he offers guidance for overcoming sadness and despair, renewing a sense of purpose, and triumphantly facing our fears of the future. Christian musician Phil Joel is best known for his long-standing role as bass player and vocalist for the multi platinum-selling band Newsboys. Phil shares his journey to becoming a part of the Newsboys, and how, with his new band Zealand, he brings hope to young people, enabling them to draw closer to God through worship.
In Episode 14, Brenton Miles, Co-host & Worship Leader sits down with Phil Joel, Zealand frontman and Worship Leader to talk all things worship and the journey that God has taken Phil on over the last 25 years of being a full time touring musician and recording artist. You may recognize Phil's voice from his recent projects as the frontman of Zealand, or maybe from his past years as the bass player and singer for Newsboys. In this episode, the guys talk about so many topics relating to worship... like being yourself, saying yes, and the freedom found when taking a "risk" and jumping into all that God has. Phil Joel from Zealand Worship shares his testimony at Exit 59 Church (Gas City, Indiana).
Hosts Jeff Eckart and Jayson Brewer interview Phil Joel from Zealand Worship. The automatic assumption these days is that if you're going to have any presence in the world, you need social media. But, how can we keep our head's up and see the needs of others when we are so worried about ourselves and about what is going on in other people’s lives?
