David Morales on The DJ Sessions presents the Virtual Sessions 1/13/21 About David Morales - David Morales is a globally revered American DJ, a Grammy award-winning record producer, a songwriter, and a businessman. He has produced and remixed over 500 records for an all-star roster of multi-platinum artists, including Mariah Carey, U2, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Madonna, and Whitney Houston. The global phenomenon and penetration of dance music into Top 40 radio would not have been possible without him. A native New Yorker, Morales was one of the first superstar DJs to actively tour the world and his activity, over the years, has only increased. Recent 2019 headlining dates include the U.K.'s 51st State Festival; a back-to-back set with Luciano at IMS' Dalt Villa party; massive five-hour “tag team” sets with Louie Vega; sold-out events at Manchester's Victoria Warehouse, Avant Gardner in New York, and A Night in Paradise at London's Ministry of Sound. Coinciding with these dates was Morales' keynote interview and official party headliner at the Brighton Music Conference, which included a streamed set on the British Airways i360 Tower. Not one to rest on his laurels, in the midst of this non-stop tour schedule, Morales launched Diridim Records in 2018. With this new label, Morales is signing and developing artists—and naturally, releasing some of his own productions. Diridim celebrates all dance music, from the classic sounds Morales is known for to straight up electronic. Releases in 2019 include the multi-volume “The Red Zone Project,” Izizwe, featuring Shota, and collaborations, “There Must Be Love” and “Freedom” with Janice Robinson. His unquenchable thirst for newness is precisely why this native New Yorker remains relevant. “It is about keeping an open mind,” Morales explains. Since August 2019, I’ve had this BOOST podcast and I’m excited to say it’s just hit 10,000 listens - so thank you to everyone that’s tuned - i created its a chance for me to give tips, motivation and maybe a few guest interviews along the way. Your Music Industry Podcast | Your Guide to Navigating the Music Business
From his bedroom belt drive turntables, to his first tentative gig at a student party, phased by a pair of 1210s, to small bar sessions around 1999/2000, his first big break was a party in an MOT Test Centre somewhere on the outskirts of London. Rundell has steadily built his following and his skill and has now played alongside such luminaries as Laurent Garnier, Carl Cox, Ben Sims, Luke Slater, Danny Tenaglia, Joseph Capriati, Pan-Pot and Dubfire. His calendar is a collection of major festivals and iconic clubs; from Fabric London, Space Ibiza (one of the few artists to have played in every room at the club over the 12 years he was a regular guest), Output (NYC), Zig Zag (Paris), Kristal Glam (RO), to Sunwaves (RO), Awakenings, Glastonbury, BPM, Ultra Miami, and regular stints in South America. Rundell doesn’t follow trends, adhering to his own beliefs and interests both on and off the dancefloor. As a prominent spokesperson, from publicly voicing his opinions and showing his support for Fabric after their recent temporary closure, to various panel appearances at Amsterdam Dance Event and Brighton Music Conference, Rundell speaks his mind. In today’s episode with sit down with Jon to explore his journey along with a deep dive into his position on approaching record labels and cultivating relationships in the dance music industry. **-- Show Notes: https://www.yourmusicindustry.com/post/rundell-jon Highlights from this Episode: [0:00] an insight into Jon Rundell’s journey into the industry and his early days of working 3 paper rounds just to save up to buy some turntables. How do you start a record label? What is the best way to develop artists? Is starting a business with your friends a good idea? These are just a few of the questions that Brighton-based entrepreneur Josh Gunston gives his take on. Josh started his journey into the world of music business when he co-founded Southpoint, a record label established in 2015 to shine light on the UK's bass and grime scene. Southpoint are now considered one of the UK’s leading grime and bass movements. In 2018, Josh graduated with a first (1:1) degree in Music Business (BA) and left his part-time supermarket job to begin working full-time in the industry, including more recently on his latest venture, Project Gosh.
