The Ideal Maternity Home was opened by Lila and William Young in the 1920's as a way to offer discreet birthing and adoption for unwed mothers and widows. But, greed got the best of them and they became more interested in making profits than offering quality healthcare. The Ideal Maternity Home Opened in the late 1920s and would end up running through the late 1940s. The two owners would be rolling in dough and babies, but unlike a lot of adoption agencies now, the children were not in the best conditions. Every single infant under their care was living in dirty beds filled with flies and millions of other babies, and  if they were deemed not marketable, they would be left to die and be buried in Butterboxes.

Lila and William Young saw an easy way to make money, it's unfortunate so many got hurt along the way

This week we delve into three cases that take a look into the horrors of Nova Scotia's history. We first learn about the Ideal Maternity Home in East Chester, NS, where newborns were taken from their mothers, illegally sold to families, or murdered. These children began to be known as the Butterbox Babies. Next, we move over to the island of Cape Breton, NS, where a plan to rob a McDonald's for $200K goes awry and ends in murder and $2K. Lastly, join us on South Mountain where we explore the lives of the Goler Clan, an impoverished, incestuous family that made headlines in the 1980s.

William and Lila Young were a religious young couple living in Nova Scotia with 5 children. They had a heart to help the frail and sick while also spreading the gospel to their community, later specializing in maternity care for unwed mothers who were shunned by society. Episode 157 - From the late 1920s until after the Second World War, Lila and William Young ran the Ideal Maternity Home and Sanitarium for Unwed Mothers at East Chester, Nova Scotia. The pair have been referred to as ‘baby farmers’ who sold healthy newborns to wealthy couples with the means to pay and left the less viable to die of starvation. Estimates are that more than 100 and as many as 400 to 600 babies may have died in their care. Many of these deceased infants were quietly buried in wooden butter boxes at various sites around the area, while it is believed that others may have been disposed of in the nearby Atlantic Ocean. Summer kicks off with a bang this week on BEHIND THE LENS as we take a look at three winning films and speak with their gifted filmmakers who are not only good storytellers, but really good guys. The film is, in a word, Bellisimo! Exquisitely told and emotionally beauteous, the detail and depth with which Ron Howard tells the story of the man behind the voice is not only told with an objective eye, but a caring one. By film's end, one feels as if they know "Luciano", that they sat at the table and ate pasta with him, shared laughs. Listen as Ron talks about the research and assimilation of archival materials and the technical challenges presented with the use of old footage and recordings, gathering interviews, finding a throughline and working with his editor Paul Crowder, opting for sound mix in Dolby Atmos and the genius of sound recording mixer Chris Jenkins, not to mention selecting very specific arias for which Pavarotti is best known and then using them to highlight moments of Pavarotti's live versus the chronology of performance. Then writer/director MICHAEL MELSKI joins us live talking about his new film, THE CHILD REMAINS. Based on the true story of the "Butterbox Babies" and the surrounding legend that has permeated not only Canadian folklore, but Scottish and Irish as well, Michael crafts a chilling tale steeped in ambient cinematographic excellence. Rounding out the show, Australian actor ANDREW STEEL is with us live talking about his first North American feature, WISH MAN. You'll quickly hear why Andrew is just one more reason why we love Australia. Classically theatre trained and with a successful career in Australia primarily on stage with the Australian Shakespeare Company and in television, Andrew makes the leap to the United States with the story of Frank Shankwitz, the man who founded the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Handpicked by Shankwitz to be the man to depict him on screen, the stars seem to have perfectly aligned for Andrew who is also known for his own philanthropic endeavors, namely the international film festival Flicks4Change.org and its offshoot, Scripts4Change.org. This week Richard welcomes Michael Melski, director of psycho drama “The Child Remains.” From Richard’s review of “The Child Remains:” The story of the Butterbox Babies resides in one of the darkest chapters of Canadian history. From 1928 to 1945 a home for unwed mothers on the South Shore of Nova Scotia sold and otherwise disposed of babies, allegedly burying the unwanted tots in “butter boxes” or wooden crates from the local grocery. The dastardly goings-on at the Ideal Maternity Home lie at the heart of a spooky new film from East Coast filmmaker Michael Melski.
