Michaux State Forest is the place I spend the most time outdoors. Located about 30 miles from where I live, it's where I hike and camp. It's where I bring visitors to show off the South Mountain region. It's where I breath in fresh air and explore the beauty of the Commonwealth. It's my safe place away from the goings-on of Harrisburg. But that safety was shattered in April 2025. I received text messages from friends telling me that Michaux was on fire. Then, news came that there were two fires. And they were spreading. With wind and no rain in the forecast it became evident that the situation could get bad quickly.Over the following two weeks, I'd see photos and videos of the fires spreading across the forest I loved. Friends were evacuated from their homes. Roads were closed. Massive clouds of smoke billowed across the area. People were scared. The beautiful landscape I loved was on fire and there was nothing I could do but watch. But thanks to incredibly brave firefighters and with a little help from the weather, the Thompson Hollow and Hammond Rocks fires were extinguished in 14 days. Over 150 fire companies from 10 Pennsylvania and Maryland counties battled the blaze. Approximately 2,700 acres were destroyed by the wildfires. Luckily, no homes or private property was damaged and only two people suffered minor injuries. And, predictably, a determination was made that the fires were human caused, like 99 percent of all wildfires. Here's the thing. While the situation was scary for many in the area – even for us 40 minutes from the fires – this is a common occurrence in Pennsylvania. There's between 1,000 and 2,000 wildfires every year in Commonwealth. And the majority of those wildfires occur in the spring. These fires so close to home was a sobering reminder of the ever-present danger of wildfires. With Michaux still charred from the fires, I wanted to know more about wildfires and the wildland firefighters that have to put them out. On this episode, I speak with Mike Kern. Mike is the Chief Forest Fire Warden for the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. In this episode of Grow a Small Business, host Troy Trewin interviews John Abrams, founder of South Mountain Company, shared his remarkable journey from launching a small six-person architectural construction firm in 1973 to growing it into a thriving 40-employee solar business generating $20 million in annual revenue. A strong advocate for employee ownership, Abrams highlighted the advantages of worker cooperatives and Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs), emphasizing their positive impact on productivity and employee retention. In his new book, From Founder to Future: A Business Roadmap to Impact, Longevity, and Employee Ownership, John Abrams explores the critical topic of succession planning for aging business owners, offering insights on preserving company values, fostering effective communication, and achieving a sustainable work-life balance. He also reflected on navigating challenges like the 2008 financial crisis and underscored the importance of community engagement in building a resilient and purpose-driven business. Balance your health, wealth, relationships and business growth. And focus your time and energy and make the most of this year. Let's get into it by clicking here. Troy delves into our guest's startup journey, their perception of success, industry reconsideration, and the pivotal stress point during business expansion. They discuss the joys of small business growth, vital entrepreneurial habits, and strategies for team building, encompassing wins, blunders, and invaluable advice. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? According to John Abrams, the hardest thing in growing a small business is getting everyone aligned behind a single mission—what he describes as “getting all the wood behind a single arrow”—while also maintaining core values in the face of numerous external temptations. He emphasizes that as a business grows, staying true to its founding principles becomes increasingly difficult, yet it's essential for long-term success and integrity. What's your favorite business book that has helped you the most? John Abrams' favorite business book that has helped him the most is Managing Transitions by William Bridges. He values it for its insights on how to effectively move from one stage of business to another, emphasizing that it offers guidance on navigating all kinds of changes within a company. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? John Abrams recommends several alternative sources of learning rather than traditional business media. He highlights The Ink and The Contrarian as valuable platforms, along with communicator Anat Shenker-Osorio for her insights on messaging and influence. While not all are strictly business-focused, he finds them powerful for understanding communication, leadership, and societal context—all of which he sees as essential to growing a meaningful small business. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? John Abrams recommends strong communication tools—both written and spoken—as the most important resource for growing a small business. He believes that clear, effective communication is the key to building relationships, aligning teams, and driving a business forward successfully. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? John Abrams would advise himself on day one of starting out in business to recognize that it's going to be an incredible ride, to enjoy every minute of it, and to stay conscious and aware of how he builds relationships with people, as they are the true key to success. He reflects that in his early years, he focused too much on product quality and not enough on the importance of people, which he later realized is what small business is really about. //The Wire// 2300Z November 6, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: DONALD TRUMP WINS ELECTION. WILDFIRE STRIKES VENTURA COUNTY IN CALIFORNIA. COALITION GOVERNMENT IN GERMANY COLLAPSES.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Europe: Climate activists from the Just Stop Oil group vandalized the U.S. Embassy perimeter in London early this morning in an act of protest against Trump's win.Germany: Chancellor Scholz's coalition government collapsed today, following long-standing disputes between the Social Democrats, the Free Democrats, and the Green Party, all three of which had united to form a coalition government in 2021. AC: As of this afternoon, most pundits are expecting a snap election sometime next spring.Middle East: Protests and demonstrations escalated overnight following PM Netanyahu's decision to fire Defense Minister Gallant.-HomeFront-USA: Donald Trump has won the Presidential election, garnering both the Electoral College and the popular vote. Harris conceded defeat this afternoon. Votes are still being tallied as a handful of hotly-contested Congressional races remain unsettled or well within the margin for a recount.Gulf Coast: Hurricane Rafael continues to strengthen, obtaining the status of a Category 3 hurricane overnight. Early this morning Rafael made landfall in Cuba, with many weather models differing on potential landfall impacts in the United States.California: An exceptionally serious wildfire has threatened residential neighborhoods in Ventura County, as very high winds significantly altered fire behavior this morning. The Mountain Fire was spotted this morning on South Mountain, resulting in a rapid blowup throughout the day. Over 1,500 acres have already burned, and most of the areas at immediate risk to safety are residential areas. Consequently, overwhelming efforts have been undertaken throughout the day to evacuate very large residential neighborhoods. Extremely high winds have also restricted the use of aerial fixed-wing firefighting assets, greatly limiting firefighting efforts.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: As the final votes are tallied, one major overwhelming observation is the absence of around 18 million votes for Harris that were expected following Biden's alleged numbers in 2020. In 2024, amid record turnout on both sides, the Democratic candidate won roughly the same amount of votes as in 2016. This has highlighted the not-insignificant discrepancies of the 2020 election like no other. Harris underperformed in every single county that Biden previously “won”, which is probably less of an indicator of voters' distaste for her, and more of an indicator of the widespread cheating that occurred in 2020. The vote count reaching nowhere near 2020 levels despite spending almost $16 billion dollars this campaign season (the most in American history) speaks volumes. However, at the end of the day, the truth of all elections remains poignant…roughly half of the nation is unbelievably upset. Even the most underwhelming protester still has the potential to cause chaos if the right funding conditions are met, though in general they usually are more of a threat to themselves than others. Nevertheless, increased situational awareness is strongly recommended over the next few months just in case more deliberately organized demonstration efforts become more common throughout far-left circles. Widespread rioting among these groups is unlikely for the moment, however there's still plenty of time to fund any opposition movement between now and January…or after the Inauguration when opposition can more effectively be centralized. So far, most riots have been extremely low-level and largely insignificant, with only a few arrests being made in the usual major cities. More broadly, the next few months will be instrumental in determining which lines of effort remain viable for liberals, which should be

fWotD Episode 2684: KNXV-TV Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 9 September 2024 is KNXV-TV.KNXV-TV (channel 15) is a television station in Phoenix, Arizona, United States, affiliated with ABC. It was established in 1979 as the Phoenix area's second independent station with part-time subscription television programming from ON TV. It was originally owned by the New Television Corporation, which had attempted to set up the station for nearly five years prior to its launch. In 1985, Scripps-Howard Broadcasting, the broadcast division of the E. W. Scripps Company, acquired KNXV-TV. Channel 15 affiliated with Fox in 1986 and became the leading independent in the market, one of Fox's strongest affiliates. In 1994, Fox announced a multi-city affiliation agreement with New World Communications which included Phoenix's then-CBS affiliate, KSAZ-TV, and mostly CBS affiliates in several other major markets. CBS expressed interest in affiliating with Scripps's ABC affiliates in other cities and Scripps used this as leverage to force ABC to move its Phoenix affiliation from market leader KTVK to KNXV-TV beginning in January 1995. The station was already organizing a local newsroom when the switch was announced and aired its first newscast on August 1, 1994; News 15 received critical acclaim in its early years but sank in ratings and quality in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The news department recovered, expanding the number of local newscasts it produced, and has since received three George Foster Peabody Awards. In 2019, Scripps acquired a second Phoenix station, KASW (channel 61), which was the CW affiliate for Phoenix. The CW affiliation briefly moved to a subchannel of KNXV-TV to allow channel 61 to air Arizona Coyotes hockey games. The two stations share studios on 44th Street on Phoenix's east side; KNXV-TV's transmitter is located atop South Mountain. Its signal is relayed across northern Arizona through a network of low-power translators. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:49 UTC on Monday, 9 September 2024.For the full current version of the article, see KNXV-TV on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Ruth.

In Adams, Cumberland, Franklin and York Counties – also known as the South Mountain region – there's been progress in preserving farmland and even non-farmland, but almost half of the streams in the region are impaired and there are more extreme hot and rainy days. Those are a few of the findings of the first ever “State-of-the-Region Report Card" conducted by the conservation organization – South Mountain Partnership. The metrics that got a thumbs up for working well were more preserved land, including farmland, driving proximity to trails, and better air quality. The thumbs down, meaning more work to do, unfortunately was a longer list that included impaired streams and creeks, a decrease in riparian buffers, less forested land, fewer acres of orchards, walking proximity to trails and parks, and more extreme heat and rainy days. A sideways thumb translated to more work needs to be done or more information is needed. That grade went to wetlands preserved, farmland, historic places, public open spaces, trail and bike routes and driving proximity to water access. On The Spark Wednesday, Katie Hess, Director of the South Mountain Partnership and Pennsylvania Landscape Conservation said the report card is the first phase of a three-part project,"We have a report to final report that sets out recommendations for taking on the challenges that were revealed in this project. And South Mountain Partnership is taking on a handful of these over the next 5 to 10 years. But there are over 65 recommendations. And so we invite any individual or group who is interested in being part of implementing or exploring the implementation of other recommendations to join us. Julia Chain, Program Manager of South Mountain Partnership added, "Something that we're trying to weave in through each of these recommendations and how we take action on them is accessibility. So, we understand that creating the most accessible opportunity to interact with nature is really critical. And I think this is just a good opportunity to highlight the work that the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation has done here, because they've done a lot of this research to identify where we can grow in terms of accessibility. And they also really support our program. Our conservation landscape is one of eight in Pennsylvania and was selected by DCNR for being such a unique location."Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dave Rosen is a climber and ophthalmologist in his final year of residency. And Dave grew up like so many of us: broadly exposed to the importance of money and taught a thing or two about saving, but investing was a foreign concept and his lack of knowledge was a source of shame. While Dave skimmed over it, he's no slouch as a climber. He has bagged a pile of double-digit boulder problems up to V12, sent 5.13c, and developed numerous boulder problems, particularly in the South Mountain area near Phoenix where he and his wife lived for medical school for four years. He is hard-working, analytical, and pragmatic in his career and life approach. In this conversation, we discuss how Dave found climbing from the world of canyoneering, his early exposure to money and how that has markedly changed in recent years, the constant pull of greener grass, working backward from an ideal lifestyle, and the ethical and moral dilemmas of early retirement. Hilary Brougher writes and directs films which blend the mechanics of original storytelling with gritty development of character. Through incisive dialogue; emotional harbingers of hope followed by inevitable glimpses of realism, Hilary's projects each carry with them a distinct piece of the era in which they were constructed. Growing up in Catskill, NY, she would frequent the cinema every week to catch a taste of the latest auteur to be featured, such as Fellini. Jim Jarmusch, Spike Lee, Gillian Armstrong and Jane Campion were among the filmmakers she admired into the 80's. She made her film debut as writer and director of The Sticky Fingers of Time (Terumi Matthews; Nicole Zaray; James Urbaniak), which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 1997. Shot on Super 16 in Williamsburg, the film captured the scent of the 1950's noir genre in unparalleled unique fashion and flair through the vein of time-travel, feeling stuck and reminiscing about the future. Her next feature film, Stephanie Daley, was developed at the Sundance Lab and starred Academy Award Winner Tilda Swinton and Amber Tamblyn in lead roles; the film portrayed themes of trauma, pregnancy and the search for truth fueled by heavy emotions and performances which followed suit. Timothy Hutton, Denis O'Hare, Melissa Leo and Jim Gaffigan support the storyline in masterful and different ways. Hilary won the Waldo Scott Screenplay Award at the Sundance Film Festival, and Best Director at the Milan International Film Festival; Stephanie Daley was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, while Tamblyn was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for her gripping performance as the title character. Hilary then adapted Jane Mendelsohn's novel Innocence into a feature film of the same name, which starred Kelly Reilly, Sophie Lane Curtis, Sarita Choudhury and delved into the teen horror, vampire fiction genre. Her latest film, South Mountain, is a poetic expanse on life, liberty and morality through lens of masterful performances by Talia Balsam, Scott Cohen and Andrus Nichols. She worked with “Sticky Fingers” collaborator, cinematographer and husband, Ethan Mass, on the project, and displayed the craft she has continued to execute with charm throughout her illustrious career. She is Professor of Professional Practice in Film at Columbia University. In our conversation, we discussed shooting on film; practical considerations in distribution; and directing some of the best actors of all time.Opening Credits: Delay 77 - Nothing at All; Closing Credits: HoliznaCC0 - The Dull Blade Of Repetition
Changes in senior leadership can make or break any church or organization, especially when a senior, founding pastor retires. Succession is a crucial leadership discussion that often gets forgotten or delayed, but it's a topic we would all be wise to get a head start on.Today we talk with Eric Nelson, the new lead pastor of South Mountain Community Church in Utah. Eric recently took over after their former leader, Paul Robie, retired at the end of last year. South Mountain took their time and the succession process worked really smoothly, so what outline did they follow, and what can we learn from their story? Eric walks us through each step, shares lessons he learned along the way, and provides some helpful things for us to think about as more and more churches are passing the reins on to the next generation of leaders.
There is a lot of emphasis on messaging regarding marketing these days. However, most people just try to create messaging based on assumptions of what they think their clients and customers "would" say. That can take your messaging off track to what truly connects to your audience. On today's show, Jonny Holsten, a StoryBrand Guide, speaks about When Messaging Goes Wrong and How To Get It Back On Track. In this episode, Jonny talks about:• Why you need to interview your client's clients and your sales team when creating messaging• Why you need someone else to write your messaging• How to properly talk about "yourself" in your messaging• Ways to find authority in your past skills• The importance of having a controlling idea in your marketing

Synopsis As the season begins, we offer you this “Autumn Music” — a woodwind quintet by American composer Jennifer Higdon. Higdon says she wanted to write a companion piece to another famous woodwind quintet titled “Summer Music” by Samuel Barber. Higdon's “Autumn Music” was commissioned by Pi Kappa Lambda, the national music honorary society, and premiered at their 1994 national convention in Pittsburgh. “Autumn Music,” says Higdon, “is a sonic picture of the season of brilliant colors. The music of the first part represents the explosion of leaves and the crispness of the air of fall. As the music progresses, it becomes more spare and introspective, moving into a more melancholy and resigned feeling.” Jennifer Higdon was born in Brooklyn in 1962, and teaches at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Her chamber and orchestral pieces have been performed by ensembles coast to coast. She's also active as a performer and, as she explains, as an enthusiastic member of the audience: “I love exploring new works — my own pieces and the music of others — in a general audience setting, just to feel a communal reaction to new sounds. Music speaks to all age levels and all kinds of experiences in our lives. I think it can express anything and everything.” Music Played in Today's Program Jennifer Higdon (b. 1962): Autumn Music –Moran Woodwind Quintet (Crystal 754) On This Day Births 1875 - Lithuanian composer Mikolajus Ciurlionis, in Varena (then the Kaunas province of the Russian Empire; Julian date: Sept. 10); 1933 - Spanish composer Leonardo Balada, in Barcelona; 1961 - American composer Michael Torke, in Milwaukee, Wisc.; Deaths 1989 - American song composer Irving Berlin, age 101, in New York City; Premieres 1869 - Wagner: opera, "Das Rheingold," in Munich at the Hoftheater, Franz Wüllner conducting; The opera was performed at the Bavarian emperor Ludwig II's request, but against the composer's wishes; 1938 - Webern: String Quartet, Op. 28, at South Mountain, Pittsfield, Mass., during the Berkshire Chamber Music Festival; This work was commissioned for $750 by the American music patron, Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge; 1964 - Jerry Bock: musical "Fiddler On the Roof" opens on Broadway: It would run for 3,242 performances before closing; 1971 - Barber: "The Lovers" for solo voice and chorus (after a poem by Pablo Neruda), in Philadelphia; 1989 - Bernstein: "Arias and Barcarolles" (orchestrated version prepared by Bright Sheng), at the Tilles Center of Long Island University with the New York Chamber Symphony conducted by Gerard Schwarz and featuring vocalists Susan Graham and Kurt Ollmann; The first version of this work, for soloists and piano four-hands, premiered on May 9, 1988, at Equitable Center Auditorium in New York City; 1990 - James MacMillan: "The Beserking" (Piano Concerto), at Henry Wood Hall in Glasgow by pianist Peter Donohoue and the Royal Scottish Orchestra, Matthias Bamert conducting; 1990 - Christopher Rouse: "Jagannath" for orchestra, by the Houston Symphony Orchestra, Christoph Eschenbach conducting; 2000 - Philip Glass: “Tirol Concerto” for piano and orchestra, by Dennis Russell Davies (piano and conductor) with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, at the 7th annual Klangspuren Festival in Schwaz, Tirol (Austria); 2000 - Zwilich: "Millennium Fantasy" for piano and orchestra, by the Cincinnati Symphony, Jesús Lopez-Cobos conducting with soloist Jeffrey Biegel; Others 1937 - During the Spanish Civil War, Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas conducts his 1935 composition “Homage to Federico Garcia Lorca” in Madrid while the city was under siege by Spanish fascist forces; The Spanish poet Lorca had been killed by the Falangists; Links and Resources On Jennifer Higdon On Barber's "Summer Music"

We then get sidetracked talking about some of our favorite restaurants in the Scottsdale area: The Farm at South Mountain, Bandera - which apparently closed this year, and Luci's at the Grove I wanted to start with pinning up a couple of things from the last episode: In particular a bit more of the Story of Joseph which is in Genesis 37 through the end of Genesis. Bottom line: we see a Biblical example of forgiveness and grief and in particular Joseph shows us that we can forgive and then continue to grieve. Fast forgiveness can lead to fast bitterness for women. Jason wanted to reiterate that a husband's heart attitude toward the forgiveness process for her needs to be focused on for her to feel better, not just for him to feel better. We then dig into some handholds that women can use as they work through the forgiveness process. We dig into these six phases of the process: Awareness - owning our feelings, this is the beginning of grief Acknowledgement - name the bitterness, resentment, etc. and see that forgiveness is ultimately the answer - but it's okay to not jump to forgiveness if you aren't ready Empathize and Experience - empathy is key (but keep in mind this can take a long time to cultivate). In regards to experience: this is from the parable of the unmerciful servant in Matthew 18- when we experience forgiveness (not just receive it) - it readies our hearts to share it with others. Choice - forgiveness is volitional, it's a choice, it literally means - “to let go” Commemorate and Communicate - doing something to show that you have said your big “yes” of forgiveness and consider communicating this to the one that has hurt you (use wisdom here, depends on the relationship) Continuation - even after our big yes of forgiveness - continuing to say the little yeses. The number of times we forgive is not a numerical standard but rather a heart standard. We will continue to forgive until our heart is at peace. Forgiveness work is a full-time job ladies. And for men listening - please hear me say: she is working HARD to get there. When she is crying and grieving - know that this is what is moving her through and toward forgiveness. In 1882, Madeleine Vinton Dahlgren would write a book by the name of South Mountain Magic. It was in this book that the uncanny reality of the mountainous areas of Maryland would be finally documented for the world to learn of. The likes of Witches, Wizards, Haints and creatures such as the Snallygaster and Dwayyo would finally escape the hills and hollers of South Mountain. Among these creatures (and many others) is one canine that was so feared and respected in the 1800's that the people who called the South Mountain area home, thought of this creature as real as any other in the woods. Snapping in and out of existence, growing to enormous sizes, and snarling at its witnesses, Mrs. Dahlgren simply called it the “dog-fiend” but the locals eventually came to call it the Snarly Yow.
