Where in the world am I? In San Diego today, talking about Cape Breton, Canada . Hi there. I'm Dr. Mary Travelbest, world traveler, professor, marketing expert, and all-around fun person. And I'm excited to connect with fellow travelers and share our experiences. Quick-fire FAQ: Your mom, grandmother, or even your daughter told you to be careful when traveling solo. But did they ever do it? You are on your way. The question I get asked is: What should I tell someone who discourages me from traveling? Answer: You can turn it around and ask for specific information on what they know about solo travel, how they learned about it, and what facts support their knowledge. Do not be confrontive, but do ask for some examples so that you can diffuse the situation. In the long run, they want what's best for you. Remember, they don't have any ulterior motive; they just want to be helpful. When you tell them where you are going, how prepared you are, and that you have a sound system of backups, they will wish you well. 60-second confidence challenge Your challenge is to use your MAP App at night. It's not the same as daytime so that you will face some additional challenges, but once you do it, you will gain confidence. In future episodes, we will discuss walking at night in more detail. If you like today's Confidence Challenge, my book series dives deeper into using maps and how to build confidence using them—link in description." See Book A for addressing this challenge. You can find it on our website at https://www.5stepstosolotravel.com/ or on Amazon. It's a several-part series. Destination Deep‑Dive Today's special destination is: Cape Breton, Canada, and the Cabot Trail. Today, I'm taking you along one of the most breathtaking drives in the world — the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The sheer beauty of this place will leave you in awe. Cape Breton Highlands National Park anchors this famous loop, which you can drive either from Chéticamp on the west or Ingonish Beach on the east — about 104 kilometers apart. I suggest starting counterclockwise, from east to west, for the best morning vistas on the right side of the road, and later, sunset views along the coast. Before you go — fill your gas tank! There are only a few gas stations along the way. This area is all about the outdoors. For hikers, the Skyline Trail is a 6.5-kilometer loop, approximately two hours long, offering sweeping ocean views — one of the most popular hikes in Canada, with possible moose sightings and breathtaking cliffs. If you prefer a shorter option, try Broad Cove Mountain. Alternatively, head east to the Coastal Trail or west to the Fishing Cove Trail or Corney Brook Trail, which passes by the waterfalls. If you don't have camping gear, you can rent ready-pitched cabin tents called oTENTiks — a great option to experience the park overnight. Seafood lovers, you're in luck! There are numerous small, local restaurants serving lobster, scallops, and fresh fish. And if you want a local experience, stop by a whale museum or take a whale and seal cruise — both are worth the time. Where to stay: For budget stays, CabotTrailHostel.com offers beds with good value. I stayed at the Bear on the Lake, located in Whycocomagh on the Bras d'Or Lake, which is centrally situated for exploring the Cabot Trail. Vibe: Welcoming, social, clean, and safe for solo women travelers; shared kitchen and lake-view deck for relaxing evenings. Now back to the travel sights: Outside the park, stop in Baddeck, home of the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, and don't miss their famous lobster suppers. In Sydney and North Sydney, you can explore a miners' museum, local parks, and even take a ghost tour. One morning, I left my hostel before seven, snacks packed and spirits high. The drive was pure joy — no traffic lights, sunshine, and that incredible Celtic charm everywhere. Next time, I will visit the Gaelic College in St. Ann's (Ceilidh trail music and crafts). My Irish roots would be smiling. I even met a 70-year-old postmaster who invited me for a private swim in a local lake with a private entrance. Hidden from view, I took a spontaneous dip with permission from the owner-and yes, it was a nude swim in nature! I did lose my glasses, which I will mention later on, but it was worth it for that moment of freedom. Hidden from view, I took a spontaneous dip with permission from the owner— and yes, it was a nude swim in nature! I did lose my glasses, which I will mention later on, but it was worth it for that moment of freedom. Cape Breton surprised me with its strong Celtic culture — there's even a school for the Gaelic language. By the end of the day, I had driven nearly 600 kilometers, my heart full and my camera full of beauty. Other stops you can make if you stay longer: Stop by Glenora Distillery in Glenville for a quick visit or coffee (optional whisky tasting is available if you wish!). Continue to Margaree Harbour — stop at the beach for photos of where the river meets the sea. Visit the AcadianChéticampVillage of Chéticamp, known for rug hooking and vibrant cChéticamp Lunch in Chéticamp: The Doryman Pub & Grill or Harbour Restaurant (seafood and great view). Continue north to Pleasant Bay and visit the Whale Interpretive Centre. On the east side of the Trail, you can find Breakfast: Coffee and a bagel at the hostel or in Baddeck (try High Wheeler Café).

I have such an enthralling chat lined up for you today, my friends. When Deb bought a remote holiday cabin in Nova Scotia, Canada, in 2021, she couldn't have imagined that she was about to experience something truly mind-blowing - up close and personal sasquatch sightings. Before she spent her first summer there, she knew nothing about the forest people, until they started letting her know they were there with unusual sounds and smells. That progressed to full-blown sightings and mindspeak, and she's joining us to today to share some of those astonishing experiences with us. Hosted on Acast. In today's episode, we talk with Krista Wood, a registered nurse with the Cell Therapy and Transplant Program at Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada). Krista shares her invaluable insights and experiences working with patients dealing with chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a common complication following stem cell transplants. Our discussion delves into the importance of communication, post-transplant care, and finding joy and purpose during survivorship.Krista emphasizes that early detection and treatment of GVHD are critical. She encourages patients to report any changes, no matter how minor they may seem, and reassures them that healthcare teams are there to help. This open communication is vital, as post-transplant life can be overwhelming with fears of relapse or complications. Ensuring patients have direct access to their care team can ease their anxieties and foster trust.Routine health checks, like blood work and pulmonary function tests, play a crucial role in monitoring potential complications. Krista explains the importance of tracking liver enzymes, bone density, and lung function to catch and address issues early. She underscores that post-transplant care goes beyond the transplant itself, extending to overall health maintenance, including routine screenings like mammograms, dental care, and colorectal exams.Reconnecting with life post-transplant is another important theme. Krista encourages patients to rediscover the activities they loved before their illness, whether it's returning to work, volunteering, or pursuing hobbies. Work and social engagement provide purpose and can aid emotional recovery. For those who can't return to work, finding alternative ways to contribute, such as volunteering with organizations like the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or HealthTree, can offer fulfillment and connection. (Note: the National Bone Marrow Transplant Link (nbmtLINK) has a peer mentor program as well, email info@nbmtlink.org if you'd like to be a peer or need a peer mentor. )Preparing for transplant and understanding GVHD beforehand is crucial. While some patients prefer to know everything, others may only want the basics. Krista and her team provide consistent education in manageable increments to help patients absorb key information. She explains factors that increase the risk of GVHD, such as donor characteristics and patient preconditioning, and stresses the importance of entering the transplant process in the best possible physical shape.Krista also highlights the importance of addressing sensitive topics like sexual health, which many patients are reluctant to discuss. She brings up these issues proactively, ensuring patients feel supported and have access to necessary resources. Finally, Krista shares stories of hope, including patients who, despite long-term challenges, have regained a sense of normalcy and fulfillment. She reminds us that while every patient's journey is unique, resilience and adaptation are common threads in their recovery. This episode is a testament to the critical role nurses like Krista play in guiding patients through this complex medical journey, offering care, education, and encouragement every step of the way.More:Leukemia & Lymphoma Society: https://www.lls.orgHealthTree Foundation: https://www.healthtree.orgGVHD Alliance: https://www.gvhdalliance.orgLink to LLS free Nutrition Consultations: https://www.lls.org/managing-your-cancer/food-and-nutritionThank you to our sponsors. What would your reaction be if someone asked if you're codependent? If “Certainly not!” is your immediate response, this episode invites you to look a little deeper. While we often turn to a single definition of codependency—enabling another person in a situation that is damaging or dangerous, such as addiction—Terri Cole‘s new book, Too Much: A Guide to Breaking the Cycle of High-Functioning Codependency, expands on this traditional and insufficient definition to include those who are “overly invested in the feelings of the people in our lives to the detriment of our own internal peace.”Terri is a licensed psychotherapist, empowerment coach, and recovering high-functioning codependent. In therapy sessions with her highly capable patients, Terri noticed a lot of pushback when she would suggest that they might be codependent. However, when she clarified her updated definition, they immediately recognized these traits in themselves and could begin recovering from these detrimental behaviors. It is likely that you recognize these traits in yourself or someone close to you, so I hope that you will come away enlightened and empowered from Terri's explanation of the clues that highlight these traits, the heavy cost to both the individual and their loved ones, and how we can all be of service to others without adopting problematic patterns. We also unpack a thoughtful question from a listener in Nova Scotia Canada about rebuilding a damaged relationship with her four adult children. On today's episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast, we're talking about the art of quilting with my guest Andrea Tsang Jackson. Andrea is a textile artist, quilt designer, author, and educator based in Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada. After working in various design fields and settings ranging from architecture to museums, the quilting medium called to her as a way to explore place, belonging, and agency. Andrea pushes the limits of quilting and textiles by exploring scale and dimension and moving traditionally domestic objects into the public realm. Her work often celebrates community and collaboration, and explores ideas of belonging. The rich history of quilting also heavily influences her practice; she sees it as an extension of community across time. Andrea is working on her second book, Quilting: A Journey to Self, which will be released with Nine Ten Publications in early 2025. +++++ Today's episode is sponsored by Creative Crochet Corner. About Susan Power: Susan is the Founder & CEO of PowerUp Leadership, a boutique consulting advisory and leadership coaching firm based in Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada. PowerUp Leadership focuses on creating inspiring workplaces The firm specializes in building leadership capability for Executive Leaders. Most of her clients are in the technology industry, professional services, and healthcare In this episode, Jordan and Susan Power discuss: How people communicate in both direct and indirect cultures. Roles coaches play at the highest levels that are usually not discussed Helping teams work together more effectively Aspects of effective leadership Key Takeaways Effective leadership requires balancing a polarity: Respect and support on one side. Challenge and accountability on the other. The top coaches act as a “thought partner” with their executive clients. They provide alternative perceptions and interpretations to help their clients reach decisions. This is not usually included as something that is part of coaching. Teams are able to work more effectively if each member is encouraged and willing to communicate their strengths and weaknesses. To encourage honesty, ask each team member to voice their level of belief in a decision and then address any doubts or concerns that arise. Prioritizing respect and humility is the key to effective leadership. Being merely “nice” isn't going to help anybody in the long run. “To be an entrepreneur, you have to be very intentional, that continue to surround yourself with top talent and smart people and smart clients.” — Susan Power Connect with Susan Power: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/powerupleadership/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/powerupleaders/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PowerUpLeader/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/powerupleadership/ Connect with Jordan: For executives wanting a complimentary executive coaching conversation: jordan@jordangoldrich.com Website: www.workplacewarriorinc.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/jordangoldrich1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jordan.goldrich Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jordangoldrich/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jgoldrich/

Do you ever go grocery shopping without any sort of list and end up forgetting half of what you actually needed? Not fun, right? So why would you take that same approach with how you operate your supply chain? On our season finale of Supply Chain Therapy, listen to how Rebeca Illsley, COO of Thermacell Repellents, successfully incorporates process into an ever-growing demand pipeline. Yet another veteran in the industry, Rebecca held a variety of roles at The Clorox Company, including Director of Manufacturing & Director of Supply Chain Integration, before making the leap to Thermacell. In the conversation with Alex and Michelle, Rebecca shares what big lessons she's brought to the Thermacell team, and what she's prioritized first since joining the organization. Some of the highlights include segmentation, team building, and focusing on S&OP first and foremost. Given that Thermacell products are EPA registered, Rebecca highlights the ways in which your manufacturing is impacted when producing safe, high-quality products. Later on, you'll also hear Rebecca talk about what it was like to partially step away from her career in order to build her family and raise her two daughters. Hint – It's totally possible! In addition, she gives her take on how her experience has been in this male-dominated industry, and what advice she has for others looking to tighten the gender gap. —Guest BioRebecca Illsley is the Chief Operating Officer of Thermacell Repellents Inc. She started her career in consumer packaged goods 24 years ago in Research and Development with Frito-Lay followed by Coca-Cola. Rebecca took a pause in her career for six years opting to stay at home with her two daughters. She returned to work full time at The Clorox Company where she held a variety of roles in supply chain over 14 years. Those roles included Manager of Contract Manufacturing, Director of Global Quality Assurance, Director of Supply Chain Integration and Director of Manufacturing. Rebecca is very proud to be leading a talented supply chain organization at Thermacell, driving growth by disrupting the mosquito repellent category with exciting product innovation.Rebecca grew up in Nova Scotia Canada and has a BSc in Food Science from Acadia University and a MS in Food Science from the University of Minnesota. —Guest Quote“My opinion is: S&OP is the brain of the supply chain. So if you don't have S&OP where it needs to be, then you really can't manage your demand. And you really can't manage your inventory, and you can't manage your supply plans.” - Rebecca Illsley—Time Stamps *(2:00) Dynamic logistics in VMS*(7:56) All about Thermacell Repellents*(9:37) Joining the team from Clorox*(12:39) Recuperating in-house manufacturing *(16:16) Why you need to reinvest in your supply chain*(19:14) How to shift to a quality control mindset*(22:21) Overcoming the gender gap in supply chain*(27:35) Advice for ensuring equity *(30:55) Speed round—SponsorThis podcast is powered by the team at Stord. Purushothaman Cannane (Purush) creatively combined his engineering skill, passion for solving environmental problems, and his drive to help vulnerable communities when he founded Greenii to create paper bags from clean waste papers such as newsprints, magazines, flyers, and brochures. Avoiding post-consumer paper in order to bypass the need for additional environmentally unfriendly chemicals and processes, he sources high-quality paper wastes from libraries, corporate offices, paper mills, flyer distributors, universities, and printing presses, offers employment to recently immigrated women or refugees, and has now sold thousands of carrier bags in Canada and the USA to replace single-use plastic bags. Not stopping yet, Purush has gone on to invent equipment (Semi-automatic assembly, first in the world to swiftly process newsprints, and magazines into paper bags) to facilitate growth in production volumes, and is expanding into box packaging as well. While handmade bags may continue to form a part of the product offering, it is the raw materials used that ensure bags will always remain unique. He even affords customers the opportunity to convert their unused, expired marketing materials and paper products into new packaging products for use by themselves or another environmentally conscious and creative business. The instrument described within is not what most people today would picture when they hear guitar. Instead of the six stringed Romantic or Spanish guitar - the direct ancestor to today's classical and steel stringed instruments - the instrument described is what is now known as an English or Scottish guitar. This instrument had six courses of strings, but was a smaller teardrop shaped instrument strung with metal wire and tuned in open tunings. It is the ancestor to and most closely resembles the modern cittern or German waldzither. With its early wire strings and open tunings it was less suited to the more harmonically complex and delicate music played on the gut strung Spanish instrument. Nevertheless, it enjoyed widespread use as an instrument for popular and folk music. The ‘Instructions' portion of the text is relatively brief. It explains the tuning of the instrument (an open C major chord) and a few rudimentary techniques. Interestingly it describes a simple strumming technique and also suggests an alternating plucking with the thumb and forefinger, a common technique on the lute and other early stringed instruments now known as ‘thumb under' that approximates the effect of a plectrum. The musical selections themselves are mostly presented in simple settings. The music is provided in staff notation, rather than the tablature more commonly used for stringed instruments of the era. All of the music is transposed to C to fit the open chord tuning of the instrument. The texture is simple, mostly simple monophonic melody line with the odd open string drone or strummed open string chord for emphasis, when harmonically appropriate. In all but a few instances the music only calls on the player to strike notes on immediately adjacent strings, most often in melodic parallel thirds or a melody over an open drone string. There is none of the counterpoint, moving basslines, or harmonic figuration that is typical of Baroque or Romantic guitar repertoire. These factors along with the popular tunes suggests to me that the music was intended for an amateur audience and intended to be strummed as much as plucked. One could view the tutor as analogous to modern commercial ukulele books full of popular and folk tunes in simple arrangements. The various Moorish tunes are interesting and of particular note. They are all extremely short and simple with a strong pastoral sound of open ringing intervals evocative of hunting horns and reveilles, perhaps intended to conjure the image of the trumpets popularly associated with the military bands of the Ottoman Empire. In light of the above notes on the instrument itself, I have played the selected tunes on a modern steel string acoustic guitar, with a mix of pick and thumb and forefinger as appropriate.
