Lisa Breitenfeldt launched a business selling geocaching equipment in 2005. Ten years later, she had a line of products and some success, but lots of competition. Instead of continuing to chase sales and new products, she asked her mailing list what they might want out of a box subscription - and got the feedback that transformed her business. Now, at Cache Advance, Lisa sends her members a fun box of geocaching and awesome outdoor gear each month. She’s scaled her business to nurture her very best customers while massively reducing her workload and de-stressing her life. Today, Lisa joins the podcast to tell the story of how she coped with her niche becoming rife with competition, built a new business to the exact specifications of her best customers, and stopped chasing sales for good. "I only had 220 members and it had been open 4 years ….in just 7 days I had over 300 members"Lisa Breitenfeldt is the President and CEO of Cache Advance. Her geocaching name is Lookout Lisa. Lisa has been geocaching since 2002, with over 200 hides and now over 11K finds. She is past president (2 years) of the Inland Empire Chapter of the Washington State Geocaching Association (WSGA).Lisa created and designed Dr. B's Cache Repair Kits in 2005 as a fun project to fill up her spare time (when she's not out caching!) and to help promote responsible caching. This launched Cache Advance and she's never looked back. In 2015 the Cache Crates, a monthly subscription box for geocaching, was launched. Applying what she's learned at Tribe and Connect, Lisa did a relaunch and closed the cart of the Cache Crates in October 2019. This brought in 83 new members, bringing us to over 300 members. An insightful conversation about the world of geocaching and how closing cart increased Lisa’s membership. We discuss:What is GeocachingBirth of the Cache Crate subscriptionEffect of Cache Crates on businessDeciding to close membership and move to exclusivityBuilding a buzzNext steps for Cache CrateUtilizing Email listsMemberships & creating communityPokemon vs GeocachingWant to connect with Lisa Breitenfeldt? GeoGearHeads; The weekly show for Geocaching and Location-Based Gaming

Listen to our interview with river dwellers of the banks of the Pend Oreille River about 60 miles north of Spokane, Washington. They started caching with the Garmin Rino 120 but upgraded to the Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx for the improved reception. To load both units he uses MacCaching. His favorite location to date was Hawaii and dreams of hitting Australia. His favorite hide was Ruby Ferry (GCYM9B). One of his more memorable hunts was for Camels Prairie Stash (GC25) during an event. For other entertainment he likes the Lord of the Rings movies, 24 on television, and listening to Michael Bublé.Our "Tip for the Seasoned Cacher" comes from Listener wademercer:"When you come across a cache that is damaged or in need of repair, add a maintenance log to alert the owner. I have found that most owners will send an email back, and usually will give a time frame as to when they can make the repair. If they have moved or are far away (and you are close to the cache) you might offer to replace the cache container for them. This will get the cache up and running again for other cachers, and also earn you brownie points!"Thanks to Cache Advance for their donated gift package (Cache Advance Hat, Green 3.5" x 6" Medium Cache Sticker, & "Abomination - Rock Harbor" by Colleen Coble).Cache-A-Maniacs Discovery Coin: TB23G0QShow Sponsor: Found It!Content Rating: NormalDate Recorded: October 31, 2009Show Notes: DarrylW4

GeoGearHeads; The weekly show for Geocaching and Location-Based Gaming

Listen to our interview with Geldhart of Regina, Saskatchewan. This Cacher got his start using Trimble's Geocache Navigator on his Blackberry. Since then he has switched to the eTrex Legend HCx for the GPS, Cacheberry on the Blackberry, and GSAK to load both. His favorite hides are From Edmonton with Love (GC1VX7A) and lrae (GC1VX7R) which require cachers in two cities to work together to claim each of the caches. His musical taste includes the Arrogant Worms, Slim Dusty, and Weird Al. On television he enjoys watching the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Mythbusters. Our "Tip for the Seasoned Cacher" comes from Listener TeamZebra:"Always remember when you are putting trackables or swag items in caches that kids are often the first to open the container. I've found some items in local caches that I shudder to think of in the hands of a young child. Items such as pocket knives, box cutters and lighters are never good ideas for trade items or TB hitchhikers. Before you place something in a cache, ask yourself if you'd feel safe letting your kids (or someone else's kids) play with it or hold it."Thanks to Cache Advance for their donated gift package (Cache Advance Hat, Green 3.5" x 6" Medium Cache Sticker, & Yellow Rite in the Rain 3" x 5" 135 Pocket Notebook).Cache-A-Maniacs Discovery Coin: TB23FYTShow Sponsor: Twin Cities Geocaching PodcastContent Rating: NormalDate Recorded: October 30, 2009Show Notes: DarrylW4

Listen to our interview with jeffbouldin of Tennessee. He's currently dreaming of upgrading to a DeLorme PN-40, but currently caches with a Magellan eXplorist 500. He uses GSAK to load them, but has worked paperless through CacheMate (first on Palm, then on Windows Mobile), followed by GCz, and now BlackStar on the Blackberry. His favorite location has been the Virgin Falls State Natural Area, but he looks forward to caching in Alaska, Australia, Oregon, and Washington. As for entertainment, he likes the "Star Wars," "Star Trek," "Monty Python," and "the Princess Bride" movies. On television he enjoys "Stargate SG-1," "Stargate Universe," "Monk," "Star Trek," and "Criminal Minds."Our "Tip for the Seasoned Cacher" comes from Listener capytone:"Ammo cans, lock-n-locks, and film containers are wonderful. But remember that containers are only limited by your imagination."Thanks to Cache Advance for their donated gift package (Green 3.5" x 6" Medium Cache Sticker, Vehicle Travel Bug -Static Cling, & Yellow Rite in the Rain 3" x 5" 393-M Pocket Notebook).Cache-A-Maniacs Discovery Coin: TB23G3QShow Sponsor: Podcacher PodcastContent Rating: NormalDate Recorded: October 24, 2009Show Notes: DarrylW4

Listen to our interview with WitzEnd of Tacoma Washington. He and The Bad Cop (interviewed on CAM136 started caching together about five years ago. As for WitzEnd's favorite locations he's cached to date, that would be Hawaii and Japan. Eventually he would like to cache in Antarctica. His favorite hide was the Digital Communication (GCMC4D) which used a container he received as a gift. On television he enjoys Chuck, Dirty Jobs, and MythBusters. As for movies, Galaxy Quest, Star Trek, and Star Wars are notable favorites. Our "Tip for the Seasoned Cacher" comes from Listener pumpkinking27:"If you are getting ready to hide some caches, don't forget that some places will be experiencing a big season change. Your typical camo might not be good for the fall and winter. Hiding a cache now in a place that will look different in a few weeks, or months will require some additional thinking when it comes to the camo. Where a white container would stick out like a sore thumb in the summer, might be a worthwhile container to use in the winter."Thanks to Cache Advance for their donated gift package (Cache Advance Hat, Carabiner Small Pen, & White Geocaching.com Lanyard). Listen to our interview with StinkyMillers of Lincoln Nebraska. On his brother's recommendation, he purchased the GPSMAP 60Cx to start caching and still uses that today. The favorite location he's been caching so far was Australia. He would like to cache the remaining five continents he has not yet found a cache (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, and South America) to have cached on all seven. He enjoys "Lost" on television, older movies by Steven Spielberg like "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Jaws." As for his music tastes, he enjoys AC/DC and U2.Our "Tip for the Seasoned Cacher" comes from Listener dcarbone:"Quite often cache titles are a play on words that describe the location or what the container may look like. When reading the cache title, take the time to read between the lines as there may be more to the cache title then you think."Thanks to Cache Advance for their donated gift package (Dr. B's Urban Cache Repair Kit Refill, Green 3.5" x 6" Medium Cache Sticker, & White Geocaching.com Lanyard).Cache-A-Maniacs Discovery Coin: TB23FXRShow Sponsor: Geocaching Saguenay-Lac-St-JeanContent Rating: NormalDate Recorded: September 19, 2009Show Notes: DarrylW4

He's also been watching "America's Got Talent" on television lately. Also mentioned in this episode is CacheBerry, CacheMate, Caching, Geocaching iPhone App, Geosphere, , and iGeocacher. Our "Tip for the Seasoned Cacher" comes from Listener DaveJustTyped:"When paperless caching with an iPhone or an iTouch, sometimes there is no wireless signal in the bush. By pressing the power button along with the menu button, you can take a screen shot which is then saved to your photo section. By taking a screen shot of your maps, hints and the like, they are all right there in front of you - even without a signal."Thanks to Cache Advance for their donated gift package (All-Weather Standard Clicker Pen - Black Ink, Green 3.5" x 6" Medium Cache Sticker, & Green Rite in the Rain 3" x 5" Notebook).Cache-A-Maniacs Discovery Coin: TB23FYQShow Sponsor: Geocaching PodcastContent Rating: NormalDate Recorded: September 18, 2009Show Notes: DarrylW4
