Back in October 2013 the GeogearHeads podcast (www.geogearheads.com) did an episode about the History of Podcasting (www.cacheamaniacs.com/ggh-093-history-of-podcasting). This episode featured Rob Walch, from media hosting site Libsyn. Without the above podcast episode there would be no Oh Beep! After hearing it, we had a "we can do that" mentality. To take things full circle. Back in April 2016 DarrylW4 conducted a series of interview with geocaching podcasters. Profiling each one and why they do it. Those profiles were never released to the GGH feed. This episode is the audio from the Oh Beep! session. The hope is that someone hearing this will have a "I can do that" moment and start their own podcast. We'd like to thank the GeoGearHeads and DarrylW4 for all they have done to help us over the years. One cache find: GC58E06 - 28 Days Later - Abandoned Road by stuarthowe11 Not a cache to do after dark - I got a real chill from being here placing the cache at 6pm We were wanting to do GC27063 CASTLE ROCK EARTHCACHE - NOTTINGHAM by north king, but life got in the way. But when researching this cache we noticed the following log from moan-a-lot: They say earth caches are supposed to teach you something, well this 1 certainly taught me never to take the part time caching wife and geo boy in to Nottingham! It cost me a top of the range frying pan, a boys sling shot, a fish tank and a cuddly toy (ok slight exaggeration there it was some posh pumpkin seed snacks) Feedback.. From Steve... Hey guys. My name is Steve Weeks, and a few years back, I released a CD of Geocaching music called ”Found It!” by the Travel Bugs.I just wanted to let you know that I’m about to launch a Kickstarter campaign to see if I can fund another CD of Geocaching music. The campaign will launch on 10/15/2014 and will last 30 days. Since the campaign duration is so short, the real trick is trying to reach the Geocaching community in time, so I’d greatly appreciate any help getting the word out on 10/15. Despite the seemingly risqué title, the music, like the last CD, will be family friendly. Thanks a million and happy geocaching! Check out the kickstarter page: www.thegeocachers.com/kickstarter From Dave/DudleyGrunt... Mark, OpenCaching North America's latest blog features an interview with the creators of the new GoCache card game. This is also something we touched on in episode 19 (www.ohbeep.com/19 - The Countryside Code). When Geocachers leave an area in a worse state than how they found it, then it spoils the area and game for everyone. Ask Doctor D.. From Lucie (on Facebook)... Helloooo :) Discovered an interesting fact recently that made me think of you - someone at work was asking if dock leaves really do help for nettle stings or if it's a placebo/old wives' tale sort of thing. So, if you don't log the find online you're not doing it by the rules? Does that mean the signature you put in the log should be deleted - just like some CO's delete online logs when it is obvious the "finder" hasn't found the cache? [MICRO VLOG] by The Geocaching Vlogger http://youtu.be/cpa5eXmBLpM Travellers & Geocoins.. 1 - Photo stories/Blogs - like the one DarrylW4 has done with his Minicacher Companion. In this instance, Darryl took a lego man and found interesting locations near the cache to photograph him. Then he added a line of text in the log telling a little story/scenario explaining the scene. Simple to set up and uses the travellers page on geocaching.com to record the story. Dave DeBaeremaeker has some great stories involving Lego characters on his Only Googlebot Reads This Blog site. He has a cool Indiana Jones story Indiana Jones and the Avian Abode Adventure. This is more of a beginning to end story, illustrated with photos taken at different locations along the route. 2 - Books - We saw a book at an event, which was trackable. People at the event were encouraged to write a message to the owner in the book. 3 - Vehicle travel bug decals - As simple as they sound. Put it on your car, so people can discover it while you're out and about. It doesn't stop with the car: Dave DeBaeremaeker I have many TBs, including several personal ones:My van is trackable. I use it to mark significant caches I have driven to. The trackable code is a window decal from+Cache AdvanceMy mountain bike is trackable, and used to track significant caches I have biked to. The code is on a dogtag attached to one of the rack mounts on the seat stay.I also have two t-shirts with the same trackable code I wear to events. So that adds clothing to the list. Dave Self My CR-V is my Cache Retrieval Vehicle 2 TB. I also have a name tag I only log thru events and I have a trackable patch on my caching vest. 4 - Personal Geocoins/Travelbugs - Rather than send them out in to the wild, to make their own way in the world, some owners prefer to keep their Geocoins/Travelbugs close to them. As the owner goes about their own journey in Geocaching they will dip the coins/bugs in to caches a long the way. Or even allow others to discover them - this can be at events or even when they meet on the trail. We've seen these attached to dog collars or carabina's on ruck sacks. StridentUK has one that has travelled an amazing distance since October 2013. I just have one, a dragon trackable tag on my caching bag. Logged 3,000 miles between caches so far.http://t.co/G6t26jeeOZ 5 - Tattoos - Now this is serious commitment to the game - its also a sure fire way to ensure you don't lose the travel bug. The Amasons, from The Podcache Show, each have a trackable tattoo. So does Adam from UKCacheMag.com Of course these are age restricted. This is a good way to make the trackable very personalised to you, in its design. 6 - Implants - If the tattoo isn't personal enough, how about implanting your trackable? Check out www.notaboutthenumbers.com for their article on this. 7 - Race Them - Challenge someone on the other side of the world, or the other side of the street. The race is as grand or as limited as you want it to be. Some can get elaborate; such as The Bank Job The aim is for your trackable item to travel to The Bank and ‘steal’ a gold coin. Then return to the same cache it started from. The winner will be the first to do this. This is the simplified description. But AGAIN you're sending out trackable Lego characters (seems to be a Geocaching theme). Where to get trackable Lego characters - the shop at Geocaching.com Coming Up.. BTW – you'd funny like that milk that's been in the fridge for the last 6 months. ;-) Lucie Melen Just listened... so here is some listener feedback! I find "another find for me" even more annoying and insulting than TFTC, because that's the automatic text on the app. They couldn't even be bothered to type anything! From Yorkshire Yellow Just to say I enjoyed this segment in your last podcast. The honesty with which you spoke was touching, and I found myself with a tear in my eye at one or two points. Although I don't suffer from depression, I do think I get a little 'down' sometimes myself, particularity in the grey winter months. Also, most of my role at work is in essentially what is a sales environment (letting and sale of commercial property), which, if it's not going well, gets me down. I've found that quick lunchtime cache, in the green areas in the town where I work, or, If I can manage it, on the edges of the Cotswold Hills, lifts my mood/spirits no end. I also totally agreed/empathised with you on the 'simple pleasures' side of what you were saying - children splashing in puddles, seeing nature, etc. I've been on an enforced 4 day working week since the start of the recession, so have been lucky enough to have one weekday a week to spend with my nearly 7yo geokid and now her nearly 3yo sister. The times we spend together on these days, often on a short caching circuit (on which she invariably ends up riding most of it on my shoulders!) are incredibly enjoyable, and I've some precious memories from these times. Keep up the good work on the podcast. I'm enjoying them! John (Yorkshire Yellow) Ask Doctor D... From Yorkshire Yellow Dear Dr Duck, When me or the geokids swap swag in caches, we also replace what we take with something we think is of equivalent or greater value. However, so often we see caches with, to be honest, are a load of crap in them - broken old fast food toys, soggy paper items, things which have got wet and gone rusty - you probably know what I'm talking about. My question for you - has the concept of swag in caches had its day? Thanks Dr Duck! Yorkshire Yellow PS - My thoughts on this: We will always tidy up a cache, so that the the 'finding experience' is a better one for the next cacher. We will will often add more swag than we swap out. If my (young) geokids are coming caching with me, then I will often try to pick a newer series of caches, where the swag is still there and hasn't had time to 'degrade', which unfortunately seems to be the way of things nowadays. Sincerely, Everyone at Geocaching HQ www.bbc.co.uk - Cash treasure hunt. @HiddenCash Video Of The Week... Hardest Geocache Ever? by twish1999 http://youtu.be/5rieyONff5c Discussion... Are paper log sheets still necessary? Why they aren't necessary: Technology has moved on, we can now log at GZ online or take a photo as proof and post that to the cache page A lot of the time logs are turned to mush, so signing is a little pointless/impossible Cache maintenance would be made much simpler without logs Most of the appeal of Geocaching is the find, signing the log is secondary As a cache owner I'm more interested in the online logs and photos. How many cache owners actually cross check the paper log with the online log to make sure those who claim to have found the cache actually did? An alternative method can be used to prove you found the cache - such as a code in the container, as seen in the LAB caches at the 2014 Kent Mega Why they are necessary: Signing the log is in the rules! On the bigger caches and special locations its nice to see what people have to say in the log book There is something a little exciting about seeing a familiar name on a log book, or even seeing that someone is out there caching the same time you are They're essential for some Geocache types; for example Letterbox Hybrids If you have feedback, please send it to feedback@ohbeep.com or leave a comment at www.ohbeep.com

The Island Cache by Geo Paul The Countryside Code... What is it? From the Natural England website: "The Countryside Code applies to all parts of the countryside. Most of it is just good common sense, designed to help us all to respect, protect and enjoy our countryside. The Code, which applies in England and Wales, makes it clear what the responsibilities are for both the public and the people who manage the land. The Countryside Code started life in the 1950s as the Country Code. It was updated in 2012." Respect Other People... Consider the local community and other people enjoying the outdoors Leave gates and property as you find them and follow paths unless wider access is available Protect the natural environment ... Leave no trace of your visit and take your litter home Keep dogs under effective control Enjoy the outdoors... Yorkshire Yellow "Because of geocaching - I've been to some really great places I wouldn't have been to otherwise." Feedback... From Denise aka Ey Up Me Duck... Hi Mark, Sam and Sophie, I have finally got around to listening to your podcasts (although I have just noticed there is one more (the latest) for me to listen to). I have really enjoyed them. It felt just like I was sat in the room with you. I can't remember all the questions you have raised but here are our answers to the ones I can remember. GPS vs Phone - I'm with Sophie on this one as we tend to go out for the whole day and the battery on the phone runs out. We don't mind the phone for cache and dashes and also if there is a new one in the area and we can't be bothered to mess about putting it on the GPS but generally we prefer the GPS and if are in another country then we don't have roaming charges - though this nearly backfired on us last year when we went to Cyprus because although we knew we had loaded 500 plus caches onto the GPS when we powered it up in our villa it only showed 10!!!! We were devastated. Luckily Philip (brother) was due out two days later so he brought the laptop out and saved the day! Caching and holidays - we now tend to plan holidays in places where we can cache too. New Year Caching Resolutions: well last year we had found just over 200 caches and I said to the Old Soldier that I'd like to get to 500 by the end of the year ... we are now almost at the 2000 mark!!!! So this year our aim is get 2000 caches, get over 100 on a day, cache in at least one more country and cache in at least 5 more counties and complete 2 challenge caches. Urban Vs Rural - we enjoy both. If we have a lot of time (or if we are with the Scouts and want to wear them out so they sleep at night) we tend to do countryside walks. But sometimes we only have a few hours spare and so then we do ones we can park near. It also depends on the weather. It is not nice caching in the pouring rain so wouldn't plan to do a walk but might do a few round town. We also prefer trails where we can cycle around due to the Old Soldiers injuries. Most important piece of equipment (apart from GPS and resources). The Old Soldier says tweezers and I say my extending torch / magnet thing. I think that I have mentioned most of the shows you have done - keep up the good work. News & Events... GeoSnippits Geocaching Videos: What's in Your Geocaching Pack? by Andy "Head Hard Hat" Smith. Sam is going old school this week, with his choice for video of the week. What's in your geocaching pack is a common discussion between Geocachers. This video shows some options: Discussion... Tony Liddell (on Facebook) - I started out with the phone, then got myself a gps but always preferred the phone, despite the disadvantage with battery life and sometimes accuracy Andrew Wood (on Facebook) - I cached exclusively with an iPhone from 2009 to the start of 2012 when I bought an etrex 30. Since then I've used a combination of the two, as each has its advantages. Battery life is obviously a major plus for the GPSr, but I couldn't live without the "always online" features of the phone. I've never found a difference between them with accuracy. Corey Stevens (on Google+) - The smartphone has many pros for being a versatile "swiss knife" style electronic tool, but nothing beats the accuracy of the GPSr. I can keep my gloves on in the cold without buying specialty gloves, it's waterproof and tons more rugged than most smartphones, and my batteries last hours longer! Neal (Gackt) (on CacheFace) - Smartphone. It obviously depends on which model you use, and what software you use on it, but if you choose wisely the phone has equal or better battery performance and accuracy. My android phone has c:geo running, with offline maps installed, a number of PQs plumbed in so have thousands of cache details at my finger tips for when in no phone signal areas. The ability log caches when and where I want. The ability to receive emails with new published caches and store the details into it anywhere I am at any time. I have compared the accuracy for placing caches along side my GPSr, there is no issues there. The dedicated GPSr IMO has almost had its day. The only time I get my GPSr out of my back now is if I need to have a photo taken with it for TerraCaching locationless caches, and that is all. The only benefit my GPSr has over my phone now is ruggedness, but I get around this fairly well with a good phone case. Norman Hicks (desmognathus) (on CacheFace) - I still carry my GPSr, but do most navigating any logging with the iPhone. Sometimes the GPSr is closer, sometimes the iPhone is. Occasionally, they even agree about something. I do have a good backup battery for the phone in case I run it down. I find the iPhone to be steadier under heavy canopy, which I would not have expected. Perhaps this relates to the way the satellite signals are processed? Derek Carter (on CacheFace) - For urban caching, I use my iPhone since I can keep it on the charger in the car, but I have my GPSr handy just in case the phone seems too far off. Out on the trail, I use my GPSr pretty much exclusively. The batteries last pretty much all day, and I can carry an extra set with me easily. That way, the phone stays charged in case of emergencies. I don't see the "equal or better" battery performance on my phone when running the geocaching app. My phone drains rather quickly when apps are running in the background, especially any that use a constant location tracking system. GPSr vs Mobile Phone GPSr Pro’s More accurate than phone Better battery life More rugged than mobile phone - less expensive to replace You can use most models whilst still wearing gloves Requires pre-planning. This can help you learn more about the area - the safest routes etc GPSr Con’s It can be an expensive investment for a device that is only used for geocaching Once away from the PC, whats on you GPSr is what you have to go geocaching with. No way of contacting people if you get in to trouble - unless you take a mobile with you Requires pre-planning. Mobile Phone Pro’s You have the up to date cache information at your fingertips - assuming you have a data connection You can load with offline information If you don’t get on with how one app works, there are plenty of others that may be more your type If you get in to trouble, you have your mobile with you The apps don’t stop at helping you find geocaches. There are also plenty to help solve puzzle caches in the field. The phone looks less odd when geocaching in high muggle areas You can log your finds in the field - especially useful when on that FTF hunt, just to let others know ASAP that the FTF is no longer up for grabs. Mobile Phone Con’s You can protect your phone whilst out, but it comes at a cost (special protective cases etc) Unless you have a pair of mobile friendly gloves - or remember to take a stylus out with you - phones don’t tend to be glove friendly. Geocaching tends to suck up the battery juice on a mobile. You can get chargers for out in the field - but these come at a cost If you’re relying on that data connection, rather than loading for offline use, then you may hit issues when in a poor reception area. Unless you have that offline backup, you may find your geocaching day cut short Links relating to this discussion: GeoGearHeads Episode 104: Multi Device Caching I http://cacheamaniacs.com/ggh-104-multi-device-caching-i-1 On next weeks show, we're discussing reasons to start Geocaching. If you have a muggle in your life, who is on the fence about going out Geocaching, then this might be the show for them.
