Why did Langston Hughes's translations of Mexican and Cuban stories go unpublished for nearly a century? A landmark book—the first complete publication of Langston Hughes's translations of thirty-three stories by eighteen Mexican and Cuban writers In late 1934, Langston Hughes, already established as a leading voice of literary Black America, traveled to Mexico City, where he stayed for more than five months and began translating short fiction by prominent Mexican and Cuban writers. These stories, as he wrote to a friend, explore “the revolutions and uprisings, sugar cane, Negroes, Indians, corrupt generals, [and] American imperialists,” and are “mostly all left stories, because practically all the writers down here are left these days.” But when Hughes proposed publishing the stories as a book, to be titled Troubled Lands: Stories of Mexico and Cuba as Translated by Langston Hughes (Princeton University Press, 2026), his agent discouraged him from further pursuing the project and it remained unpublished, until now, with only a handful of the translations making their way into contemporary magazines. This volume presents Hughes's translations of these stories together for the first time as he originally envisioned. Edited by Ricardo Wilson, the book also features an introduction and brief biographies of the included writers. Troubled Lands features thirty-three stories by eighteen writers, including Rafael Felipe Muñoz, Nellie Campobello, Lino Novás Calvo, Luis Felipe Rodríguez, Germán List Arzubide, Pablo de la Torriente-Brau, and Juan de la Cabada. The collection depicts Mexico in the wake of its revolution and Cuba in the years between the brutal regimes of Machado and Batista. Hughes was a noted translator of poetry, but his commitment to translating fiction is less well known. Troubled Lands provides a window into this important dimension of his work and illuminates his deep interest in Mexico and Cuba. This week's guest, journalist J. Mark Powell, says that history books tell you what happened during the Civil War, but his new book, "Witness to War," allows readers to experience it firsthand through its witnesses: Union and Confederate, battlefront and homefront, soldiers, civilians (men, women, and a few children). The book is based on Powell's private collection of 500 letters, and he reads a poignant one from a freed slave, living in Canada, to her former masters. Llewellyn King and Adam Clayton Powell III co-host.

California is the largest common-law jurisdiction where appellate courts don't follow each other—and it happened by accident. In Part 1 of this two-part episode, Michael Shipley explains how Bernard Witkin's treatise reflections on case dicta became binding law, why the federal circuit model works differently, and what the rule costs practitioners and trial judges every day.Key points:The Witkin origin story: No California Supreme Court decision actually establishes the no-horizontal-stare-decisis rule. It developed through dicta, then appeared in Witkin's first edition—which courts then cited as authority. The federal contrast matters for forum strategy: In the Ninth Circuit, Miller v. Gammy binds all panels within the circuit to follow the first published decision on an issue. California trial courts, by contrast, face conflicting appellate authority and must guess which rule the Supreme Court would adopt under Auto Equity—a burden one trial judge called being "appointed to the Supreme Court for temporary purposes."Stare decisis isn't jurisdictional (probably).Unpublished opinions create tension. The pros: California's rule allows multiple perspectives on emerging issues and prevents the first Court of Appeal decision from locking in statewide law before the Supreme Court weighs in.The cons: The rule creates uncertainty, burdens trial courts, and leads to inadvertent inconsistencies on procedural issues too minor for Supreme Court attention—splits that can persist for years or even decades. (In anti-SLAPP law, it took 13 years before Baral v. Schnitt decided how to handle mixed causes of action.)Publication practices hide the problem: Many conflicts never surface because courts strategically leave decisions unpublished, masking the frequency of divergent reasoning and making the appellate landscape harder to navigate.Listen to Part 1 now for the full discussion on how California got here and what it costs practitioners—then tune in to Part 2, where Shipley covers forum shopping, the anti-SLAPP mixed-causes-of-action case study, and his proposed reform: precedential transfer.

The philosopher of war, Carl von Clausewitz, described three legs that support the architecture of war: Primordial violence, the play of chance, and reason. Clausewitz aligned the element of chance the military. Every revolution brings unintended consequences -- the free play of chance. A revolution in military affairs, therefore, means exponential chance to affect the other legs of that trinity. Did the predicted revolution in military affairs come about? Are we at the threshold of one? Is that a good thing or an unacceptable risk that must be avoided? Can we avoid it? Colonels Jayson Altieri and Robert Waring, US Army Retired and instructors in our War Colleges, join me to discuss some of these questions. This is longer than my recent podcasts, but I think it will be worth your time.   Music: Liszt, F., and the USMC Band, Les Preludes. Public Domain Beatles, Revolution (1968). Uh…shall we pop the kettle on, Colin? As we awake from a fitful night on the sofa, we're fluffing our pillows and pouring ourselves a cup of trage-tea for Part 1 of our S3E8 rewatch. With newlywedded bliss nowhere in sight, we'll be taking the carriage alone to visit Pen's mother and Walter Dundas Esq. before swinging by Bridgerton House to console a grumpy husband with an unfortunately timed hero complex. And while one marriage might be on the rocks, it won't stop us from grabbing our confetti and bagpipes as we walk Fran down the carpet to join John in holy (and probably temporary) matrimony. ‘Till death do you part, Frohn. But hold your dying breath, dearest listeners. A gossip writer has been exposed and a blackmail plot is underway. Best get the chequebook out, Pen. Episode 96 On December 31, 1986, just hours before Puerto Rico would ring in the New Year, flames tore through the luxurious Dupont Plaza Hotel and Casino in San Juan. What began as a labor dispute escalated into one of the deadliest hotel fires in U.S. history, killing 97 people and injuring more than 140. In the aftermath, investigators would uncover arson, negligence, ignored safety recommendations, a chaotic evacuation, and a legal battle that reshaped fire codes across the hospitality industry. In this episode, we examine: The labor tensions and strike that set the stage for disaster The timeline of the fire and how it spread so rapidly How smoke and toxic gases became the primary killers Failures in life safety systems, egress, and emergency planning The investigation that quickly identified arson Criminal charges against arsonists Massive civil litigation and code reforms that followed Lessons learned in the context of other hotel/casino fires of the era The Crime to Burn Patreon - The Cult of Steve - is LIVE NOW! Happy Wedding Eve, one and all. Yep, we're swapping boughs of holly for bouquets of larkspur as Penelope and Colin finally nod their way down the aisle in Part 2 of our S3E7 rewatch. Following a late night of secret dealings, marriage counselling and a little horsing around, we'll be wiping the dust from our eyes and taking our seats next to a gaggle of redheads for the nuptials of the season. Once we've joined Pen and Colin in holy matrimony, we'll be admiring swan cakes and chasing jelly moulds before a royal gatecrasher puts our wedding night plans in peril. Let's hope that sofa's comfy, Colin. But if things are looking a little bleak for our newlyweds, then worry not. If we take a peek beneath the Christmas tree, we might just catch a glimpse of the happy couple kissing underneath the mistletoe. You know we love them so. * Show Notes Coming SoonWriters Guild Foundation Shavelson-Webb Library: https://www.wgfoundation.org/"Joining of Hands." Bridgerton. Written by Geetika Tandon Lizardi. With a secret out in the open and an engagement up in the air, we have our social calendar full this week as we begin our rewatch of S3E7 Joining of Hands. As we plan the most elaborate wedding breakfast of the season, we'll be checking the diaries of the Smythe-Smith quintet, finding a hair tie for a heartbroken ponytail and taking a trip across town to check the marital status of an old friend. In this thought-provoking episode of The Strategic Oracle, Kim Woods shares Why I Unpublished My Bestselling Book, diving deeply into the transformative journey behind unpublishing her ninth book—even after a successful launch. She explores the role of intuition, alignment, and soul-driven strategy in business and creative work. If you've ever questioned your next step, faced misalignment in your offerings, or sensed a greater calling, this episode holds clarifying guidance and actionable wisdom.Key TakeawaysThe Power of Reversal: Letting Go for AlignmentCompletion and New Beginnings: Kim shares how the number nine symbolizes wholeness and ripening, marking not just the completion of a writing journey, but also the beginning of a new cycle.Transformation Through Creation: Writing—whether fiction or nonfiction—is more than storytelling; it's a personal metamorphosis, mirroring the evolution we often resist in business.Trusting Intuitive Guidance: Despite external success (bestseller lists, accolades), an inner discord signaled that her book needed to be unpublished. Trusting soul over strategy can mean releasing “old outfits” that no longer fit.Asset-First, Depth-Driven Success: Kim redefines success as cultivating powerful assets and deep, intimate connections rather than wide-reaching, surface-level visibility.Inspiring Quotes"If I left the book where it was, I was anchoring myself to old energy that wasn't belonging in the world.""Your system is so much deeper than this. There's such a power that the power gets rippled through its depth, not through its reach."Key Questions Answered1. Why did you decide to unpublish your successful book?Kim recognized an inner misalignment—even as her book achieved bestseller status. Despite external achievements, she felt the book reflected “old energy” not aligned with her soul's current truth. She explains, “I was anchoring myself to old energy that wasn't belonging in the world… If it's not the right message, then it needs not to live.”2. What did the experience of unpublishing your book reveal about the creative and business process?Deep transformation often requires courageous reversal. Kim describes cycles of creation as moments of wholeness, culminating in recognizing when something must be released—even if it's painful or counterintuitive. Letting go opened space for more authentic, potent work to arise.3. How can entrepreneurs and creatives apply this lesson of reversal in their own work? It's important to honestly assess misalignments, even subtle ones: “What do you need to burn down? Maybe it's not a full scale, maybe it's just a minor tweak, but the reverberations of that are incredible.” She invites everyone to listen deeply to intuition, recognize when methods no longer serve, and make bold moves toward truer alignment.Action Steps & ReflectionAudit Your Offerings: Are your products, services, or creative works still aligned with who you are now? Use intuitive check-ins, not just data.Embrace Reversal as Growth: Sometimes letting go is the most strategic move. Realignment is not failure, but a leap toward authentic impact.Prioritize Depth Over Reach: Focus on building powerful, meaningful assets and relationships, instead of chasing mass appeal when it feels out of alignment.

Guilty as Sin: Uncovering New Evidence of Corruption and How Hillary Clinton and the Democrats Derailed the FBI InvestigationAn exciting new book from #1 New York Times bestselling author Edward Klein! When FBI Director James Comey announced in July that Hillary Clinton would not be indicted for mishandling classified information, America was stunned.Had the scandal-happy Clintons escaped justice once again? Not so fast, says investigative reporter and bestselling author Ed Klein. There is far more behind Comey's shocking press conference than meets the eye -- and a minefield of email evidence between Hillary and the White House. In his astonishing new book, Klein uncovers the real story behind Hillary's email scandals and the dirty political games that have kept her one step ahead of the law - for now. Klein reveals what the FBI's team of 150+ investigators really found on Clinton's server. How Comey originally threatened to resign over White House attempts to intervene in the investigation, and his secret plan to go around the Justice Department if needed. How an unprecedented Congressional investigation during an election year is uncovering new shocking evidence of corruption on a level some would call treason. And what Bill and Hillary still have left in their bag of tricks in their desperate quest to get back into the Oval Office.https://amzn.to/44CAW8DThe Beauty Queen: Let No Deed Go UnpublishedFROM THE BOOK'S BACK COVER:My book's been a long time in the making. Factual, emotional, shocking, and not for the faint-of-heart, THE BEAUTY QUEEN is all this and more. As soon as my first-grade teacher, Sister Steven Maria, taught me to write, I began expressing myself with words. Through the years, I consistently documented my life through writing. You will quickly learn I don't believe in coincidences. My story is true; I've lived it all and NO—it isn't a bragging book. The Beauty Queen is a complicated adventure through the shame of incest, sexual abuse, dominance, and control; of once-in-a-lifetime experiences and a living death. But, never fear. There are many funny stories, personal photos and documents, a few naughty revelations, and more than enough "shock" to keep your attention.Consider my book a how-to book on surviving a life targeted by Hate, Jealousy, Bullying, Evil, and Intimidation. I consider my disclosures a tribute to me-- the Beauty Queen—who, even today, refuses to be a victim. My story is also about the “little girl in me.” She's my life-long friend—the one who never grew up, gave up, or, gave in.Some people will purchase my book based on THE CLINTON CHAPTERS. I had no plans to include the Clintons in my book until last year when I learned, once again, I was being followed, spied on, and threatened by Hillary's Henchmen. Flaunting her importance this election year, Hillary is using the same old "playbook" from the nineties to threaten me. Tired of Hillary's bullying, I expanded my book to include the Clintons. For the first time-ever, I expose the intimate details of my three month encounter with Bill Clinton. And, I reveal the exclusive revelations about Hillary---as told to me by Bill.I've endured Hillary's ugly harassment since 1992. Trust me; Hillary likes to play "dirty" so, I'm digging in the dirt to share each life-threatening moment she directed my way during the nineties. Best of all, I reveal the dirty details of my “run-in” with both Clintons and Madeline Albright---—in China.I invite you to read my story. You'll learn a multitude of truths about others but most of all about me, Sally Miller, the woman the media-- long ago--labeled: The Beauty Queen.https://amzn.to/4eJmRuSBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

My book's been a long time in the making. You'll learn a multitude of truths about others but most of all about me, Sally Miller, the woman the media-- long ago--labeled: The Beauty Queen. The Beauty Queen: Let No Deed Go Unpublishedhttps://amzn.to/3FRsDxuBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

What is Freemasonry? This episode presents an in-depth academic overview of Freemasonry, the world's oldest initiatory society independent of religious institutions. Drawing on peer-reviewed scholarship and primary source analysis, it traces Freemasonry's historical evolution from its medieval operative roots to its speculative transformation in the eighteenth century and its global spread through colonial, imperial, and transnational networks. We explore the major Masonic traditions—Regular (Anglo-American), Liberal (Continental), mixed-gender, and female orders—highlighting their theological, political, and ritual distinctions. It examines the function and symbolism of Masonic initiation, the role of embodied ritual in shaping moral and esoteric knowledge, and the use of architectural space, tracing boards, and mythic narratives in the ritual construction of identity.CONNECT & SUPPORT

Happy anniversary, dearest listeners! Join us as we raise a catch and toast to Bridgerton Season 3 Part 1 and reminisce over twelve splendid months of flyaway balloons, scandalous journals and the most remarkable shade of blue. We'll be taking a celebratory carriage ride to the library to meet with a Regency king, a rugged pair of boots and a very tingly Lady Whistledown. And as Portia teaches a little lesson in self-love, we'll be lending Colin a hand in catching an authoress in an unexpected corner. With the champagne still flowing, we'll be moving the afterparty over to Bridgerton House for a chandelier rendezvous with Sibling Number Two and a rather enchanted Lady in Silver. And so, as we begin the next part of our journey, let us cheers once more to the match of the season, and the oldest of friends!*Show NotesTudum: Bridgerton renewed for Seasons 5 and 6Tudum: Sneak peak of Season 4 masquerade ballInstagram: @BridgertonNetflix Season 5 & 6 announcementWriters Guild Foundation Shavelson-Webb Library: https://www.wgfoundation.org/"Out of the Shadows." Dance cards at the ready, dear listener. This little love play is about to begin. As Colin arrives fashionably late to the Queen's Ball, we'll be chasséing our way past the Lord Squad and lurking behind broken columns for the next part of our S3E4 rewatch. After a danceus interruptus sends Debling's proposal plans waltzing out the window, we'll be battling it out with Eros and Psyche, not drinking lemonade with Miss Francesca and solving the mystery of the view across the square. Perhaps you should put your armour back on, Colin. It appears you and Miss Featherington have something to resolve. Do try not to injure yourself too badly, though. You'll be needing those hands for later. *Show Notes: Crumbs Entertainment Weekly: New stills from Bridgerton Season 4Reddit: Theory about Peneloise stillWhat's On Netflix: Tudum 2025 infoYahoo! Clear your bottle-weary heads and step away from the windowsill, dearest listeners – we are in pursuit of some revelry. Join us as we embark on the first part of our S3E4 rewatch, where we'll be pulling out our Fuller Library cards to read up on the tragedy of a spinster, the fabled Northwest Passage and dropsy of a Featherington's pancreas. As Pen finds herself called upon by a very fine bird and a questionable potted plant, we'll be crunching on mille-feuilles with the Marquess, lumbering in the hallway with Colin and checking the Bridgerton armour for signs of rust. But let's not miss the fruits of our labours, dearest listeners. Penelope may be getting a rather quick proposal tonight, but we're not quite ready to close the book on one particular history of connection. Can't help but be drawn back into a story of love, Miss Featherington? One, two, three – HEAVE! Grab a rope and get tugging, dearest listeners, because it's time for Part 2 of our 303 rewatch. As Penelope risks certain(ish) death for a glimpse of Colin Bridgerton's exposed forearms, we'll be rolling up our sleeves, sucking the sugar from our fingers and tearing through another pair of trousers to help a thirdborn's hero complex save the day. While we wait for the giant balloon to make its deadly approach, we'll be passing time fourth-wheeling with Eloise, misplacing a dearly beloved pirate coat and seeking justice for severely aggrieved hand-woven swans.Once we've finally deflated from a blustery day's excitement, we'll be dropping our gloves at the Hawkins Ball, hitting mute on a meet cute and summoning the courage to ask one Miss Featherington a very important question. If only we could stop staring at her lips long enough to remember what exactly was on our minds…*Show Notes: CrumbsTudum: ‘Bridgerton – Seasons of Love: Virtual Fan Event 2025'Gold Derby: Interview with Nicola CoughlanVariety: 2024's Most-Streamed Series RevealedHallmark: Bridgerton GiftsTudum: ‘Toxic Town' featureYoung Vic: ‘An Oak Tree' production informationVariety: First look at ‘The Survivors' starring Yerin HaAudible: ‘Misdirected' starring Nicola CoughlanThe Hollywood Reporter: ‘Jurassic World Rebirth' trailer revealedOscars: Kris Bowers' ‘The Wild Robot' nominated at The 97th Academy AwardsShow Notes: RewatchWriters Guild Foundation Shavelson-Webb Library"Forces of Nature." Wakey, wakey sleepyheads. Looks like someone's been enjoying their wildest fantasies a little too well. After spending the night in dreamland with Colin Bridgerton's roused subconscious, it's time to jump out of bed, refresh the sheets and begin Part 1 of our S3E3 rewatch. As Dream Polin consume our every thought, we'll be breakfasting with Benedict, falling off roofs with Greg and gulping down tea with a rather flustered thirdborn son. Once we've commiserated over a failed reconciliation, we'll be clearing our head with a promenade, glaring at mamas with Rae and diving under a willow tree to meet with a very good acquaintance of the family's. And if a time-travelling vegetarian decides to come a-courting? Worry not, dear Mr Bridgerton. We have it on very good authority that Prophet Hyacinth has already foretold your future: It is just Polin. It has only ever been Polin. * Show Notes: Crumbs Shondaland: Behind-the-scenes photos of the Season 4 table read What's On Netflix: Susan Brown cast as Mrs Crabtree PORTER: Interview with Phoebe Dynevor The Direct: Phoebe Dynevor Season 4 update Screen Actors Guild: SAG Awards 2025 nominations IFTA: IFTA Awards 2025 nominations The Hollywood Reporter: NAACP Awards 2025 nominations Art Directors Guild: ADG Awards 2025 nominations Digital Spy: Digital Spy Readers Awards 2024 The Jamie Lloyd Co.: Full casting for Much Ado About Nothing Theatre Royal Bath: A Man for All Seasons Hope Mill Theatre: Vignettes – Letters to the NHS Mrs Warren's Profession, Garrick Theatre ITVX: The Masked Singer Show Notes: Rewatch Writers Guild Foundation Shavelson-Webb Library "Forces of Nature."
