Some personal emergencies got in the way of this week's session, so we have a 2G1P classic for you about the worldwide scavenger hunt that is Geocaching! -Original Show Notes from September 27, 2021- There are little treasures hidden all over your neighborhood, and throughout the world. You just need a GPS app (and some sleuthing skills) to find them. That's the fun of geocaching, a global phenomenon where people hide containers (large and small) in public spaces and drop the coordinates on a map. Find one, and you might be the first to add your name to the log, get some free swag, or enjoy the experience of a lifetime. Alli and Lindsey chat with Scott Berks, Chad Courtney, and Jessie Brown, the hosts of The Geocaching Podcast, the long-running show about this worldwide and ever-growing IRL scavenger hunt. On this weeks show... Featuring special guest Mr Scott Berks of The Geocaching Podcast, with an exclusive announcement. Song mention at the start of the conversation Geocaching by MC Binery Miss Watto and I were recently doing a virtual cache in Loughborough (GC7B956 War Memorial #388 - Loughborough Carillon Tower by sixxdoguk). Without giving too much away the cache required us to count the number of letters on the memorial plaques at the cache location.  Mid-way through counting it occurred to me how foolish we must look to anyone passing by.  The technique we both employed was the stand very close to the plaques and run our fingers along the surface to keep track of where we'd counted to. We're both professional people, stood in a part, at a war memorial standing close to a wall counting letters.  There are people I work with who use that park, anyone of them could have observed me. Did this stop either of us?  Not in the slightest.  We were determined to get that find.  Plus we were having a good afternoon caching, making the most of the good weather while it lasted. Scott tells the story of Geocaching under an outdoor cinema screen and a really funny story about Walt Grogan face planting in to a pond. #geocachingcreators Diary of Physicist Farmgirl by Debra Burris Contact the show... This Week.. Geocaching and zombies Scotts geocaching bag tips BananaSource does something dumb with an “archived” geocache Last Week.. Scott warned us that after so many episodes podcasting would become a chore.  After so many episodes it wasn’t podcast that became a chore, it was geocaching. Very little of note is happening in this space anymore. How can you tell? News.. Geocaching mentioned on IZombie Everett Geocache Hunt Finds Explosives (From http://myeverettnews.com) Feedback.. Apparently Chicago and Detroit aren’t US states - thanks to Marcus Maximi and DarrylW4 for point this out to us. Lucie Melen adds to the list of Doctor Who related Geocaches for Doctor D’s world tour. I found a cache in Cardiff at the weekend that you would have liked! GC1A119 - Who Was Here 3: The Runaway Nan-O What A Liberty Another of the caches that take you to filming locations for the Doctor Who series, though in this case it was actually a Christmas Special (The Runaway Bride). Ask Dr D.. Hello Dr D I hope that you've enjoyed the Christmas season and that you got everything you ever wished for. Well here's the thing. I was lucky enough to be given a brand new geocaching bag. My old one had served me for 5 years and had finally fallen apart, not helped by driven over by an idiot when I was out recently but that's another story. I think that is is the time to have a good clear out of my old bag and only put into it things which I really need when I'm out geocaching. So here's my question, what should I put into my bag to ensure that I a) travel light but b) have everything I need? Look forward to hearing intelligent, well considered input. Our view: How will this be enforced? Why just new reviewers? Why not give existing reviewers a period of time to decide if they want to carry on under the new rules or step down? Why make them reveal themselves anyway? Seems like trouble waiting to happen. Police confused by 'concerning' item in 'worrying location' - turns out to be a geocache (From www.falmouthpacket.co.uk).  Oh the shame, its in the UK. "For geocache enthusiasts out there, please continue to enjoy yourselves but do think about the item your are leaving and make sure it is marked as a geocache, the contents can be seen and be sure it cannot be mistaken for something harmful. "Finally think about where you are placing it and who might need to know it is there." Speculation about the "worrying location" included a rabbit hole or a water drainage system, possibly in Penrose woods, while one commenter said the "device" looked like " three tins of beans in some fishnet stockings." There has been a bit of a bomb scare on one of the GWW Series caches, we did a couple of weeks ago (check www.ohbeep.com/79 to hear our adventures from that series). The cache in question is No Re-Morse GC5VQ7E. Note from the CO: An update: Notts police have this cache in their possession and will be returning it to us sometime this week, this cache will be moved as it was muggled in it's recent location and reported as a bomb *sigh* please hang in there while we try and rectify this and find a new place to hide it Feedback.. 37:30 From StridentUK From Moan-A-Lot Also from StridentUK Residence of Butthole Lane Dump Their Street Name Where we’ve been/Where we’ll be.. 41:27 BananaSource appeared on a special Caching In The North West episode (LANMonkeys Geocaching Summit 2015) https://youtu.be/oQ2g2ytb_AU BananaSource will also be on a special Cache and Release podcast on 13th December. Another bomb alert from the US Edwardian Geocaching? Want to win a copy of How to Puzzle Cache by Cully Long?  We let you know how. Last Week.. GC46G5M Church Micro 3773 ~ Durham ~ St Mary the Less by Just-Us-Two.  A lovely little church tucked in behind Durham Cathedral. GC2EJ55 RNLI Series - Sunderland Lifeboat by David-Joanne-Hannah.  Great location.  Some interesting sculptures to spend time appreciating (check out the photos at ohbeep.com/gallery).  BUT, seems there has been zero cache maintenance. GC3JYHG Sewage Works View (DUSCW) by dgk.  For the third year in a row, we failed to find it.  It was a bit ripe smelling in the area too.  But we did see some wild deer running through the woods, which made the tripe worthwhile. Nemesis Geocaches.. From Chris.. G’day Mark and Sam I have a couple of caches that I have been unable to find but one of my most frustrating is one over there in Southern England. It is GC17KR8, Trapezia Lick. I have been there a number of times while I have been staying there and always came away without the smiley. I would say I have searched under every tree and bush within 30 metres of GZ, fought the nettles and the brambles all without success. With such a good clue I thought this one would be an easy one. It is good to see that people are still finding it and I will definitely give it another go next time I am over. I am lucky that the journey I take to this one is quite a pleasant one. I go for a run in the mornings and running up to this cache along the disused rail track from Fareham is an experience a bit different from my  morning runs around Perth but isn’t that what makes caching fun. Cheers Keep up the good work. Chris Gore Dumb Stuff Geocachers Do.. From Shortyknits.. A couple years ago, over Memorial Day weekend in May 2013, Scott and I decided to go to Wisconsin for the weekend to do part of the 400 State Trail. http://www.400statetrail.org/  No, we didn’t drive the car on the trail, but in retrospect maybe we should have! The trail is an old abandoned railroad that the state turned into a recreational trail for biking and hiking and snowmobiles and horseback riding, and there are a few hundred caches along the main trail and all of its spurs. It’s about 3 hours from where we live in the Chicagoland area, but fortunately it’s only about a half an hour from where my sister lives. And more fortunately, my sister has a rental house that just happened to be between tenants that we could stay in. And even more fortunately, she had an extra vehicle with a bike rack so we could set up a getaway car at the end of the trail. We get off to a bit of a late start Saturday morning, mostly because we had been out night caching until about 2 or 3 in the morning the night before. But we get up and load everything in the two cars and drive to our planned ending place where we drop off my sister’s car. We drive all the way back to the start of the trail in my car, unload the bikes, get our trail passes, and head out. It took us a couple hours of driving back and forth to set up the cars, and it’s close to noon by this time, which is a few hours later than we had planned to get started. Even so, we had a great time on the trail. The weather was perfect, and we found most of the caches along the way. Back then, I was still a relatively new cacher. I hit find #1300 on the trail, and this was my first triple digit day. We found a total of 114 between the trail itself and the towns along the way. It couldn’t be a more perfect day … UNTIL….. We get about 13 miles in, just a miles away from the town where we parked the 2nd car. It’s getting to be evening by now, and I’m thinking that we had actually timed it just about right, and that we’d get to the end just as the sun was setting. So I’m riding along heading to the next cache, when suddenly I have the most terrible, horrible, worst ever thought. I skid to a stop and say … Ooooohhhhhhhh beeeeeeeeeppppppp!!!! Scott pulls up next to me to ask me what’s up. All I could say was, “please don’t kill me!” Eventually I reluctantly told him what I did – I left the keys in the car. That’s right. The key to the car that’s a mile in front of us is in the car that’s 13 miles behind us. And we’re tired. And it’s almost dark. I had no choice but to call my sister. I explain to her our situation and ask her to bring me a spare key. Well there’s another problem – there’s no spare key. The only key she had to that car was the one locked in my car. She was not too happy about it, but big sisters have no choice but to come to the rescue of the little sister. It took over an hour for her to get to where we were, during which time we found the only bar in the tiny town for a few beers. When she finally got there, we locked up the bikes and she drove us all the way back to the start of the trail so that we could get my car and drive all the way back to the end of the trail to pick up the bikes and the getaway car. We had a good plan gone all wrong. So I hope that if you or any of your listeners are ever planning to do a bike trail like this and plan on setting up a couple of cars, they’ll think of me and REMEMBER THE STUPID KEY! News.. The Silent Child has had a name change, he's now The Silent Searcher. Edwardian Geocaching Dumb stuff muggles do - a pine tree bomb alert News from Geocaching.com.. This makes it my first travel bug to travel in North, Central and South America and visit more than two countries. Thank you to geocacher Sludge_Shoveler for taking my travel bug on vacation with him.  TB4JAZ9 has been visiting caches and logging miles in over parts of the world. After touring the Midwest section of the USA it was dropped off in Hawaii. Of all places to be dropped off. Really. Bummer. An awesome geocacher, Scottish Cavalryman, grabbed it and has had it touring the islands and other great places. So far this includes South Korea, Philippines and Thailand. Here is the fun part. Both of the travel bugs are proxy tags. Neither of the original tags logged many mile. One logged ZERO!!! That is correct, ZERO!!! It never made it past the first cache I dropped it off at. From Dave DeBaeremaeker.. Heya folks   Just to address Doctor D's assertion that speed limits are slow in the US based on that Top Gear (UK) episode.  It is not the case.   That road they were on: the Blue Ridge Parkway is indeed maxed at 45MPH.  However it is important to note that the Blue Ridge is a narrow windy mountain road, and in a normal reasonably priced car, 45 feels speedy.  Fun fact: that road is a National Park, and runs for hundreds of miles thru many states.  It is also one of my favourite roads to drive on (which I do a lot as it runs relatively close to my house).   The speed limit on the road I take up the mountains to the Parkway is 55MPH.  There are plenty of Interstates that do 70MPH on the east coast.  In New Mexico I40 is 75MPH, and some roads in the flat states in the middle of the country do not have speed limits.   Cheers Dave Nemesis Geocaches.. From Ey Up Me Duck.. Nemesis caches: we only call it a nemesis cache if we have looked for it at least twice & I have just scanned my DNF list and the only ones we have searched for numerous times (including twice with a bunch of Scouts!) are Look out for the Foxes (GC3DF9X) and Devilishly Difficult (GC3FVZW) - both near Colwick Woods. We haven't been to look for a while so think it is about time we went for another look to see if anything looks different. Dumb Stuff Geocachers Do.. Scott Berks.  Not one, but three stories of how NOT to travel to a GZ.  Stories include tales of LEO's and being kicked out of a state.   Ask Doctor D.. From Head Hard Hat.. HHH asks for Advice as to what type of ways to safely attach a Geocache to living items, like a tree When hiding a cache one thing to remember: Geocaches are placed so that plant and animal life are safe from both intentional and unintentional harm. Source Geocaching.com Guidelines GGH Tips.. Even smartphones can get you good coords for your geocaches if you know how. We talked about it on "GGH 094: Getting Good Coords I" so check that out for much more information. Some quick tips are to make sure the GPSR in the device (smartphone or GPSR) is running at least a couple minutes and stable before checked. Then also get multiple readings, from multiple directions, at different times and average those positions. How are you getting coords for your caches?       Ey Up Me Duck Challenges.. GC3TVA4 Cryptic Series 3 : LIIXLVIDCCXXIVIXIVDCCCLXVIII by Drackvor This was the better of the two final hides.  Nice location by the water.  Not so sure about the bag of syringes we found. Site used to help crack this puzzle www.onlineconversion.com GC3P46Q The Loughborough Cryptic Series 1 by Drackvor This one was proof that having to solve a puzzle is not a guarantee of a quality cache.  But it did help us fill in another box on our D/T grid. Sites used to help crack this puzzle sharkysoft.com & www.counton.org. In the end both were solved using tips from the above sites and sitting with pen and paper to work the co-ords out. Februarys Challenge.. Hi Oh Beep,   I see you have been getting on with working out 2 puzzle caches - have you managed to go out and find them yet?   February Challenge.   As Feb is the month of love and as some people declare their love for each in church, your challenge for this month is to find 5 Church Micros.   On Sunday, although we didn't set out to do it, me and The Old Soldier collected 15 Church Micros. I know this is nothing compared to some people who go out and get up to a hundred in a day but it was good for us, especially as we hadn't intended it.   Now this should be quite an easy task for Dr D to achieve (unless you have already done them) as there are lots in Beeston area!!!!   If others want to try the challenge too and don't have church micros in their area, they can find ones with 'church' in the title.   Good Luck Searching Denise aka Ey Up Me Duck GeoFleaz Competition.. What is the tagline printed on every Geoflea?       The Obligatory Doctor Who Bit.. I am not sure if you have seen this, but, while not geocaching-related, as a fellow Dr. Who fan, I thought you and Dr.D might enjoy   BTW - I started watching back in the Jon Pertwee (#3) era, when there was no CGI and cardboard monsters were the stuff of legend.  Tom Baker is still the best Doctor, sorry Dr. D.   I hope to hear Sophie back on the show again soon.   GManSan (aka Gerry)   P.S.  Dr. D needs to learn the word to the Celebrate song, by Kool and the Gang.  It's "Celebrate good times, come on!"  Not sure what he's saying, but it's not that.

A shocking revelation, Doctor D has known Shorty for years - what is the 11 on his shirt for?  Shortyknits thinks its all about being one louder.  There is also the theory that they are knitting needles.  What do you think? We also got this e mail from Shortyknits: Doctor D, It has been a sad week. How could you pretend to not know me after everything? I'm heartbroken.......shortyknits Dumb Things Geocachers Do.. Greetings from Kansas USA! I listen and greatly enjoy your podcast program. Here is a cache find posting I made for a multicache I found while caching with 2 other cachers. GC58R4X The Necropolis At Mount Allen by ottieolsen is the cache. Feel free to use it on your show if you would like to. Here it is, Excellent multi! Good fun, good history. And if you aren't operating at 100% and don't get the decimal point at the right spot you can turn it into a 5 spot multi!!! Oh, did I say 5??? Try 6 if you screw up on the decimal location twice!!! LOL!!! And if you are so multi talented (get the pun???) as I am you can visit 2 locations that neither is correct, yet both are excellent locations for a container!!! (lots more LOL! Either that or cry!) Soooo, after an extra 45 minutes of searching that would have worked for an episode of either CSI or NCIS, we (caching with 2 over cachers) FINALLY got to the correct location for the final!!! Bells rang, horns honked, fans cheered! (In my mind they did anyways! But it may have been from the heat!) We were rewarded with another ottieolsen class, not what we were expecting, cache container! Thanks again for another awesome cache in the Hays area! Cachers are always telling of the wonderful things that they have discovered and learned from Geocaching. I agree! Now I can add double checking info, repeatedly, to that list! Cache on! Podcast on! Redbeard4570 Nemesis Geocache.. D D & B S,I really enjoy the banter between you two.As of this month, August, my nemisis cache(s) are Mystery/Puzzle Caches and Multi-Caches. It seems that ever since the 7SofA, I can't find the final or the next stage to get the souvenir. As of this email, I have less than two weeks to get these last two cache types. To top it off, I've found all the Mystery and Multi's in my town and neighboring town, so I have to travel 15-30 miles one way just to fail. I don't know if I'll get all seven souvenirs.Doctor D,I wouldn't worry about Scott Berks and a "plane ticket", I've heard that he won't drive into downtown Chicago to go geocaching. So you're probably safe...but then again, you are talking messin' with his girl. :-0Listening from NW Indiana and loving the show.Keep up the good work,IN_Darel Ask Doctor D.. Just a short distance from where our family lives, exists one of the oldest trees in Canada. It is called the Comfort Maple. I didn't know this tree existed until I started geocaching, but ever since I discovered it about 4 years ago, I have wanted to do the geocache at the tree.We tend to visit family once a year or so (its a 13 hour drive), but every time we go I went to the site of the Comfort Maple, and hunted for the cache. Every time, almost like a conspiracy, the cache has gone missing just before I arrive, and replaced sometime after I'm gone. Every. Single. Time.Until this last time, when Lady Luck, The Fates, or just good living, finally cut me a break and I was able to grab the cache there. After seeing the hide, there is no way I missed it before - it was definitely gone.I have a blog post about the Comfort Maple here: The Comfort Maple Travelbug Race.. "The Geocaching Association of Great Britain (GAGB) was established in 2003 to provide a national geocaching organisation and serve as a UK and Ireland point of contact for geocachers, landowners, the media and others with an interest in geocaching. We maintain a database containing details of landowner consents and/or restrictions on the placement of caches, in respect of many parts of the UK and Ireland; provide a GAGB members' forum; maintain codes of conduct and geocaching guidance; liaise with landowners as necessary; offer support to geocachers generally and provide a national organisation for enquiries about geocaching from the public, the media and others. The GAGB also produces a bi-monthly full-colour e-magazine, 'Seeker', containing UK and Ireland caching news, reviews and articles. Last year we celebrated our 10th birthday by holding CITO events across the UK. We decided to make this an annual event, on the second weekend of September and so across the 13th and 14th of September we are inviting cachers from all across the UK and Ireland to join us in attending, or even hosting an event. This year we wanted to step away from the typical "picking tin cans out of a layby" CITO and really want to focus on the conservational aspect that often gets overlooked. We have had several events published so far, from the South coast to the North of England and the tasks being performed are really exciting. In Thirsk, volunteers will be clearing an ancient dyke ready for archaeologists to get in and explore In Horsham, the team will be assisting with heathland management and birch tree removal In North Somerset, attendees will be mowing a meadow with scythes, the most eco friendly way to manage the meadow At Weymouth, folks will be getting involved with a nature reserve and removing invasive species. And there is lots more to do We really want to encourage as many cachers as possible to come out and support these events. Of course you may not have an event close to you, so why not host one yourself? You can contact the committee on gagbcommittee@gagb.org.uk and we will be happy to get you started with your CITO event listing. You can find a bookmark list of all the events published so far at http://bit.ly/GAGBCITO We look forward to seeing you soon. Case of oops I forgot I put that there. Feedback.. From Shortyknits... Hey Team D! The only reason I look forward to Mondays is that there's usually a new Oh Beep to listen to on my commute to work. When I heard this week's introduction, I literally said out loud, "What the hell was that?!?" and played it back a couple times, laughing, before I got to Mark explaining that it was Sam's attempt at an American accent. Sam, is that really what you think we sound like?? Then hearing your attempts at Canadian and Australian accents made me laugh even more. There's something else you have in common with Scott Berks - all of your accents sound exactly the same. Every accent he attempts ends up sounding Indian. Yours ... well I'm not quite sure what yours are. Thanks for trying for me anyway. I love the show. Keep on doing what you're doing, even if you are offensiving people. Or entire countries. shortyknits PS - Huge congratulations on your 500th find!!! From Dave Self.. We’re very keen to encourage people to discover the National Trails, and geocaching is a perfect way to get new people on to them. Geocaching is community, like-minded (weird) friends. Geocaching is the thrill of knowing something that others don't (there's a cache there!). Geocaching is a great escape from the pressure and rigours of daily life. 2. Geocaching is not a sport. It is not (to me) a commercial enterprise. Others will disagree with that, especially where Groundspeak is concerned. It is not worth risking mental or physical health over.

How about not running to higher ground as the flood water approach? That's pretty dumb. They've ended up miles downstream. ;-)As for the Geocachers, I'd say underestimating the difficulty, or overestimating their skills. I once went down to retrieve a cache thinking it would be easier than it was to climb back up. It turns out there was a rope in another cache just for us to use to climb back out, but I did it just slipping a little and grabbing the hands from a couple friends up top. Feedback.. The GCDoc.. Hey Mark! I was just catching up on your recent podcast episode 30 after getting back from GeoWoodstock XII. I just wanted to say that I really appreciated your story about how Geocaching positively impacted your life. It was great to hear your personal story, and I'm sure there are tons of people out there that have similar experiences while geocaching. I know for me personally, geocaching has been a great morale booster when I'm stuck in the struggles and stress of daily life. No matter how down I feel, going geocaching, watching geocaching videos and listening to podcasts like yours always puts a smile on my face! A big thanks to what you guys do, and keep it up Justin aka TheGCDoc Yorkshire Yellow.. Dear DrD, Lets not argue. Shall we call a truce? Let's be friends. Love, Yorkshire Yellow Ask Doctor D.. BTW – you'd funny like that milk that's been in the fridge for the last 6 months. ;-) Lucie Melen  Just listened... so here is some listener feedback!  I find "another find for me" even more annoying and insulting than TFTC, because that's the automatic text on the app. They couldn't even be bothered to type anything! From Yorkshire Yellow Just to say I enjoyed this segment in your last podcast. The honesty with which you spoke was touching, and I found myself with a tear in my eye at one or two points. Although I don't suffer from depression, I do think I get a little 'down' sometimes myself, particularity in the grey winter months.  Also, most of my role at work is in essentially what is a sales environment (letting and sale of commercial property), which, if it's not going well, gets me down. I've found that quick lunchtime cache, in the green areas in the town where I work, or, If I can manage it, on the edges of the Cotswold Hills, lifts my mood/spirits no end. I also totally agreed/empathised with you on the 'simple pleasures' side of what you were saying - children splashing in puddles, seeing nature, etc. I've been on an enforced 4 day working week since the start of the recession, so have been lucky enough to have one weekday a week to spend with my nearly 7yo geokid and now her nearly 3yo sister. The times we spend together on these days, often on a short caching circuit (on which she invariably ends up riding most of it on my shoulders!) are incredibly enjoyable, and I've some precious memories from these times. Keep up the good work on the podcast.  I'm enjoying them! John (Yorkshire Yellow) Ask Doctor D... From Yorkshire Yellow Dear Dr Duck, When me or the geokids swap swag in caches, we also replace what we take with something we think is of equivalent or greater value. However, so often we see caches with, to be honest, are a load of crap in them - broken old fast food toys, soggy paper items, things which have got wet and gone rusty - you probably know what I'm talking about. My question for you - has the concept of swag in caches had its day? Thanks Dr Duck! Yorkshire Yellow PS - My thoughts on this: We will always tidy up a cache, so that the the 'finding experience' is a better one for the next cacher.  We will will often add more swag than we swap out.  If my (young) geokids are coming caching with me, then I will often try to pick a newer series of caches, where the swag is still there and hasn't had time to 'degrade', which unfortunately seems to be the way of things nowadays. The addition of your Lab Cache finds may alter your milestones. Check now to lock-in milestones  on your Geocaching.com profile. After the update, you'll be able to use the tool to lock in a Lab Cache find as a milestone. You'll also find Lab Cache stats on your chronology and geocache types section. If you created a Lab Cache and it was logged, you'll find new stats on your owned geocaches page. Thanks for finding a Lab Cache and helping to play a part in shaping the future of geocaching. Sincerely, Everyone at Geocaching HQ www.bbc.co.uk - Cash treasure hunt.  @HiddenCash Video Of The Week... Hardest Geocache Ever? by twish1999 http://youtu.be/5rieyONff5c Discussion... Are paper log sheets still necessary? Why they aren't necessary: Technology has moved on, we can now log at GZ online or take a photo as proof and post that to the cache page A lot of the time logs are turned to mush, so signing is a little pointless/impossible Cache maintenance would be made much simpler without logs Most of the appeal of Geocaching is the find, signing the log is secondary As a cache owner I'm more interested in the online logs and photos. How many cache owners actually cross check the paper log with the online log to make sure those who claim to have found the cache actually did? An alternative method can be used to prove you found the cache - such as a code in the container, as seen in the LAB caches at the 2014 Kent Mega Why they are necessary: Signing the log is in the rules! On the bigger caches and special locations its nice to see what people have to say in the log book There is something a little exciting about seeing a familiar name on a log book, or even seeing that someone is out there caching the same time you are They're essential for some Geocache types; for example Letterbox Hybrids   If you have feedback, please send it to feedback@ohbeep.com or leave a comment at www.ohbeep.com
