A twisting, deeply engrossing investigation into the many lingering questions surrounding the sudden disappearance of the McStays, a family of four who vanished from their suburban San Diego home without a trace—until their skeletal remains were found in the Mojave Desert nearly four years later—from New York Times bestselling author Caitlin Rother. On February 15, 2010, Joseph McStay, his wife Summer, and their two young sons were reported missing from their new home in San Diego County. They left eggs and fruit rotting on the counter. Their Dodge truck sat in the driveway. Their dogs were abandoned outside without food. But investigators found no blood, signs of a struggle, or clues to their whereabouts. Did the family take an unannounced vacation? Were they running away from personal problems? Or were they victims of foul play? Nearly four years later, a motorcyclist found the McStays' remains in and around two shallow graves, one hundred miles away in the Mojave Desert. Their skulls showed signs of blunt-force trauma, likely due to the sledgehammer buried with them. Authorities focused on Charles "Chase" Merritt, a close friend and subcontractor for Joseph's company. Despite a lack of physical evidence, scenarios that defied logic, and numerous unanswered questions, prosecutors convinced a jury of Merritt's guilt. After an emotional sentencing hearing, the judge imposed the death penalty. But did another possible suspect, who was ignored by investigators and ducked a subpoena to testify, get away with murder? In this twisting, deeply researched true-crime mystery, New York Times bestselling investigative journalist Caitlin Rother hunts for answers to reveal the truth behind a heinous crime that became a nation's obsession, with a controversial trial in its wake, and lingering questions of justice.Joining me to discuss, DOWN TO THE BONE: A Missing Family's Murder and the Elusive Quest for Justice—Caitlin Rother

True Crime Tuesday presents: Body Parts: A Serial Killer's Deadly Compulsions with Journalist/Author, Caitlin Rother! When Wayne Adam Ford walked into the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office in November 1998 with a woman's body part in his jacket pocket, the 36-year-old truck driver wasn't a suspect in any crime. After a lengthy investigation spanning four California counties and a sensational trial, he was convicted of the torture and murder of four women. His first victim, whom he dismembered, would remain unidentified for 25 years. While serving honorably in the Marine Corps, Ford had learned life-saving techniques that gave him structure and purpose. But a severe head injury worsened pre-existing emotional problems, rendering him unable to suppress his dark sexual impulses. Knowing he would kill again, he enlisted his brother's help to turn himself in. Award-winning investigative journalist Caitlin Rother drew on previously sealed testimony and interviewed key players in the case, including Ford's brother and father, to write this intimate and psychologically resonant narrative. Extensively updated with the inside details of how Ford's first victim was recently identified through DNA testing and forensic genealogy, this classic true crime story continues to haunt us On today's TCT, Caitlin Rother joins the show to talk about the unusual way they found out the identity of "Torso Girl", Wayne Adam Ford's first victim! We also talk about the unusual relationship between Ford, his brother, Rodney and his father, Gene, and how it had changed over the years. We also delve into the strange dichotomy between Ford and his mother and ask the question, was it genetics, or the way Ford's mother treated/raised Ford, that drove him over the edge and warped his view of women! The bestselling author delves into the twisted crimes of Wayne Adam Ford.“This kind of frightening and fascinating glimpse into a killer's mind is rare.” —Ron Franscell, New York Times–bestselling author On a chilly November afternoon in 1998, a tearful 36-year-old man walked into the Humboldt County Sheriff's Department in Eureka, California, and confessed to something horrible. “I hurt some people,” he said. Inside his pocket was the ghastly proof of his statement. But there was more to Wayne Adam Ford than the trail of mangled victims he left behind. More, even, than the twisted predator inside, which drove him to increasingly perverse sexual appetites. Pulitzer Prize–nominated author Caitlin Rother draws on previously sealed testimony, interviews with the key players in the case, and the killer's shocking confession to explore the demons that drove a damaged man to his unspeakable crimes. Her book is a harrowing psychological portrait and a haunting, unforgettable true-life thriller. Includes dramatic photos “Page-turning excitement and blood-curdling terror . . . Riveting, fast-paced, and sure to keep you up at night.” —M. William Phelps, New York Times–bestselling author “Shocking, chilling, fast-paced . . . A book crime aficionados will be loath to put down.” —Simon Read, author of The Iron Sea “Rother has produced a superior study of a serial killer and his lost and lonely victims.” —Carol Anne Davis, author of Couples Who Kill “A must-read . . . Well-written, extremely intense; a book that I could not put down.” —True Crime Book ReviewsSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. “[This] is one of the great crime mysteries of modern times. It took an author of Caitlin Rother's caliber to bring it into sharp focus. A riveting read.”—Gregg Olsen, #1 New York Times bestselling author“I got a girl, hung herself in the guest house.”The call came on the morning of July 13, 2011, from the historic Spreckels Mansion, a lavish beachfront property in Coronado, California, owned by pharmaceutical tycoon and multimillionaire Jonah Shacknai. When authorities arrived, they found the naked body of Jonah's girlfriend, Rebecca Zahau, gagged, her ankles tied and her wrists bound behind her. Jonah's brother, Adam, claimed to have found Rebecca hanging by a rope from the second-floor balcony. On a bedroom door in black paint were the cryptic words:SHE SAVED HIM CAN YOU SAVE HER.Was this scrawled message a suicide note or a killer's taunt? Rebecca's death came two days after Jonah's six-year-old son, Max, took a devastating fall while in Rebecca's care. Authorities deemed Rebecca's death a suicide resulting from her guilt. But who would stage either a suicide ora murder in such a bizarre, elaborate way?Award-winning investigative journalist Caitlin Rother weaves stunning new details into a personal yet objective examination of the sensational case. She explores its many layers—including the civil suit in which a jury found Adam Shacknai responsible for Rebecca's death, and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department bombshell decision to reconfirm its original findings. As compelling as it is troubling, this controversial real-life mystery is a classic American tragedy that evokes the same haunting fascination as the JonBenet Ramsey and O.J. Simpson cases.“Rother's meticulous journalism shines through in this authoritative account of the Rebecca Zahau death incident. If you think you know this case, think again. And read this book.”—Katherine Ramsland, professor of forensic psychology and author of The Psychology of Death InvestigationsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Steve DeMocker was a narcissist, a philander and all-around cad, but was he a cold-blooded killer? In 2008, in Prescott, Carol Kennedy, his newly minted ex-wife, was found bludgeoned to death in her home. It wasn't long until the police focused on Steve as the main suspect. One might suppose this became a run-of-the mill murder case. Au contraire, mon frere! Returning Murder Most Foul guest author, Caitlin Rother, found that writing her book, THEN NO ONE CAN HAVE HER about the investigation and trial was truly a challenge. In the forward to her book Ms. Rother writes: the ethical allegations flying in every direction, the voice in the vent, the insurance money transfers, the judge with the brain tumor and the judge from the “sweat lodge” case, the Docugate scandal and the bombshell e-mail that got thrown out on this roller coaster ride to justice, suffice it to say I came to empathize with the attorneys in this case because there was so much information it became a challenge to decide what to include and what to leave out. Join me today as we try to untangle this mess with our guide author Caitlin Rother.
My special guest is Caitlin Rother who sits down to discuss the heinous murder of Tom and Jackie Hawks detailed in her book Twisted Sister. Tom and Jackie Hawks loved their life in retirement, sailing on their yacht, the Well Deserved. But when the birth of a new grandson called them back to Arizona, they put the boat up for sale. Skylar Deleon and his pregnant wife Jennifer showed up as prospective buyers, with their baby in a stroller, and the Hawkses thought they had a deal. Soon after a sea trial and an alleged purchase, however, the older couple disappeared and the Deleons promptly tried to access the Hawkses' bank accounts. BOOK COVER As police investigated the case, they not only found a third homicide victim with ties to Skylar, they also uncovered an unexpected and unusual motive: Skylar had wanted gender reassignment surgery for years. By killing the Hawkses with a motley crew of assailants and plundering the couple's assets, the Deleons had planned to clear their $100,000 in debts and still have money for the surgery, which Skylar had already scheduled. Now, in this up-to-the-minute updated edition, which includes extensive new material, New York Times bestselling author Caitlin Rother presents the latest breaking developments in the case. Skylar, who was ultimately sentenced to death row for the three murders, transitioned to a woman via hormones while living in the psych unit at San Quentin prison. Recently, she legally changed her name and gender to female, apparently a strategic step in her quest to obtain taxpayer-subsidized gender confirmation surgery and transfer to a women's prison. Combined with Governor Gavin Newsom's recent moratorium on executions, this only adds insult to injury for the victims' families, who want Skylar to receive the ultimate punishment for her crimes.

Traditional breast prosthetics can be hot, heavy and sticky. They typically require special bras or camisoles with pockets and can't be worn for weeks after surgery. Knitted Knockers are soft, comfortable, beautiful and when placed in a regular bra they take the shape and feel of a real breast. They are adjustable, washable and can even be worn while swimming. Our special volunteer knitters provide these FREE to those requesting them” Please visit the Knitted Knockers website, Knitted Knockers Homepage for all the information that you need. This webpage is especially helpful for information on approved yarns and color information: Yarns and colors Very Important: Please note that neutral colors are preferred. If you want, you can use bright colors on the bottom of your knocker, but the top of it needs to be in a neutral color. Patterns: So many choices! Please go to this section to pick and download your (free) pattern: Knitted Knockers Patterns. Hint: The Bottoms Up Knocker for Double Point Needles pattern works great with magic loop too…and has the easiest “start” to your knocker! After Carol Kennedy was found dead in her home, her ex husband Steve DeMocker became the prime suspect when his alibi could not be verified. He said he was on a long bike ride, and his phone just happened to be dead for that entire time and no one saw him. But did the police zero in on their suspect far too soon? In his 1990 true crime classic, Abandoned Prayers, Olsen delivered “a riveting and deeply disturbing chronicle” (Cleveland Plain Dealer) of “Little Boy Blue”—nine-year-old Danny, found dead in a Nebraska cornfield, whose errant father, former Amish man Eli Stutzman, had a racked up a wild history of sexual profligacy, pornography, and drugs. Years before, Stutzman's pregnant wife, Ida, had died under bizarre and suspicious circumstances. Yet Eli, shrouded by the encircling privacy of the Amish and small-town law enforcement negligence, was never charged, or even an official suspect in her death.Gregg Olsen has long been haunted by Ida Stutzman's shady death and the role Eli must have played in it. In THE AMISH WIFE: Unraveling the Lies, Secrets, and Conspiracy That Let a Killer Go Free (Thomas and Mercer; January 1, 2024), Olsen returns to the Ohio Amish community where the young woman perished in a barn fire, her death deemed “natural causes.” Eli would sell up and leave town soon after, launched on the sexual odyssey that would eventually lead to Danny's death, as well as Eli's conviction for his roommate's murder.Determined to discover the truth and seek justice for Ida—and urged on by Ida's brother—Olsen reopens the door into Eli Stutzman's dark life of debauchery and deception. He revisits many of the witnesses that he first met and interviewed when researching Abandoned Prayers, as well as numerous new voices, discovering many facts and suspicions long held secret by the pious, closed-mouth Amish community. Olson tracks down Ida and Eli's relatives and friends, as well as Eli's lovers and sex partners. He finds that many in this world where families and associations are inextricably intertwined have quietly believed that Eli killed Ida, yet few are willing to publicly judge.Returning to the investigation around Ida's death, Olsen pokes holes in the medical postmortem. Perhaps most significantly, he delves into the questionable work of Sheriff Jim Frost, a charismatic, opportunistic lawman who lived a closeted homosexual life and may have, for a time, been Eli Stutzman's lover. How much did Jim Frost cover up, either intentionally or subconsciously, to shield the truth about Eli and their shared sexuality at a time when small town life for gay men was confining and even dangerous? How complicit does that make Frost in the numerous deaths Eli left in his wake? Did the conspiracy of silence among the members of the Amish community indirectly allow Ida's and the other deaths to occur?Leaving no stone unturned and unfolding with one chilling revelation after another, THE AMISH WIFE is vintage reportage from the writer New York Times bestselling author Caitlin Rother calls, “one of today's true-crime masters."

“[This] is one of the great crime mysteries of modern times. It took an author of Caitlin Rother's caliber to bring it into sharp focus. A riveting read.”—Gregg Olsen, #1 New York Times bestselling author“I got a girl, hung herself in the guest house.” The call came on the morning of July 13, 2011, from the historic Spreckels Mansion, a lavish beachfront property in Coronado, California, owned by pharmaceutical tycoon and multimillionaire Jonah Shacknai. When authorities arrived, they found the naked body of Jonah's girlfriend, Rebecca Zahau, gagged, her ankles tied and her wrists bound behind her. Jonah's brother, Adam, claimed to have found Rebecca hanging by a rope from the second-floor balcony. On a bedroom door in black paint were the cryptic words: SHE SAVED HIM CAN YOU SAVE HER. Was this scrawled message a suicide note or a killer's taunt? Rebecca's death came two days after Jonah's six-year-old son, Max, took a devastating fall while in Rebecca's care. Authorities deemed Rebecca's death a suicide resulting from her guilt. But who would stage either a suicide ora murder in such a bizarre, elaborate way? Award-winning investigative journalist Caitlin Rother weaves stunning new details into a personal yet objective examination of the sensational case. And read this book.”—Katherine Ramsland, professor of forensic psychology and author of The Psychology of Death Investigations
Award-winning investigative journalist and bestselling author Caitlin Rother explores the mysterious death of 32-year-old Rebecca Zahau, who was found hanging from a second-story balcony of her multimillionaire boyfriend's San Diego mansion in 2011. She was naked and gagged, with her ankles tied and hands bound behind her. On the door to her bedroom, investigators found a hand-written message: "SHE SAVED HIM CAN YOU SAVE HER." The death was deemed a suicide, but Rother reveals there's more to the story... "I got a girl, hung herself in the guest house." Skylar Deleon tied Tom and Jackie Hawks to the anchor of their yacht and then threw them overboard with the help of his pregnant wife. Thomas and Jackie Hawks christened their yacht “Well Deserved.” It was a fitting name for a happy and successful seafaring couple whose hard work enabled them to retire early and realize their dream lives in Newport Beach, California. But in 2004, the dream turned into a nightmare. They were murdered in what author of "Dead Reckoning" and former San Diego Union-Tribune reporter Caitlin Rother described as the “most unbelievably horrible” way.
It's been nearly 25 years since members of the Heaven's Gate cult died in a mass suicide event in San Diego County. Caitlin Rother was a journalist at the Union-Tribune at the time and wrote about the cult's strange rules and habits.

Simpson cases. Caitlin Rother is a New York Times bestselling true crime author and Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist. She worked for nearly two decades as an investigative reporter and has had work published in Cosmopolitan, The Los Angeles Times, The San Diego Union-Tribune, The Chicago Tribune, The Washington Post, and The Boston Globe, among others. As a TV crime commentator, she has done more than 200 media appearances on episodes of 20/20, People Magazine Investigates, Crime Watch Daily, Australia's World News, Nancy Grace, Snapped, and numerous shows on Netflix, Investigation Discovery, HLN, REELZ, Oxygen, E!, A&E, C‑SPAN and various PBS affiliates. Rother also works as a writing/research coach and consultant, and plays piano and sings in an acoustic band. She lives in Southern California and can be found online at CaitlinRother.com.

When serial killers are apprehended, rarely is it because they turn themselves in. Not only did Wayne Adam Ford do just that when he walked into the Humboldt County Sheriff’s office, he made sure to have evidence with him to prove he had committed the crime. Evidence in the form of a severed woman’s breast belonging to his most recent victim in Southern California.Over the course of a few days in early November of 1998, Ford gave information on multiple murders and victims that had detectives and investigators from counties all over the West Coast fighting for a chance to speak to him. His crimes were gruesome and not something that anyone will soon forget. Eventually he was connected to the deaths of 4 women, one of which is still unnamed. Join us for the story of Wayne Adam Ford, serial rapist and killer, as we look at his life and crimes. Don’t forget! In the late summer of 1969, the nation was transfixed by a series of gruesome murders in the hills of Los Angeles. Newspapers and television programs detailed the brutal slayings of a beautiful actress--twenty six years old and eight months pregnant with her first child--as well as a hair stylist, an heiress, a businessman, and other victims. The City of Angels was plunged into a nightmare of fear and dread. In the weeks and months that followed, law enforcement faced intense pressure to solve crimes that seemed to have no connection. Finally, after months of dead-ends, false leads, and near-misses, Charles Manson and members of his "family" were arrested. The bewildering trials that followed once again captured the nation and forever secured Manson as a byword for the evil that men do.Drawing upon deep archival research and exclusive personal interviews--including unique access to Manson Family parole hearings--former federal prosecutor and former Fox News legal analyst Lis Wiehl, along with co-author New York Times bestselling author Caitlin Rother has written a propulsive, page-turning historical thriller of the crimes and manhunt that mesmerized the nation. And in the process, she reveals how the social and political context that gave rise to Manson is eerily similar to our own. In Florida a former flight attendant murders her multimillionaire boyfriend of eighteen years, using a gun, a knife, a hammer (and possibly poisoned gin), claiming he was abusive for years and put a loaded gun to her head. A woman with a history of violent, drug-addicted boyfriends kills her latest lover after only a few weeks together, alleging that he forced a gun into her mouth in a drug-induced rage. A 15-year-old girl falls in love and wants to have a baby with a boyfriend who is four years older. Her mother, who wants to end the relationship, ends up dead after being stabbed, choked, and injected with a syringe loaded with bleach. A 16-year-old girl and her 20-year-old boyfriend conspire to fatally bludgeon her disapproving father with a baseball bat. In Georgia a socialite wife of a multimillionaire is fatally shot by a flower delivery man on the day of a key divorce hearing. A crooked businessman trying to go straight is shot in his driveway by a hit man wearing a ski mask and camouflage gear—a contract-for-hire murder, advertised in Soldier of Fortune magazine. A Gulf War veteran and father of three is kidnapped, beaten and stabbed by the lover of his on-and-off-again wife, who wants to collect life insurance benefits and pay off her house. In South Carolina a woman goes to the electric chair after a vengeful feud over a dead calf turns fatal; the state's most prolific serial killer manages to kill a fellow prisoner while on death row; and a young white man tries to incite a race war by fatally shooting nine African-Americans during Bible study in a historic church. On November 6, 2000, paramedics answered a call to find Kristin Rossum, 24, sobbing. Her husband, Greg de Villers, wasn't breathing and she claimed he had overdosed on drugs after learning she was leaving him. But family and friends who knew of Greg's distaste for drugs weren't buying Kristin's story - particularly the idea that he would take his own life. The daughter of a well-to-do California family, Rossum was a brainy blonde beauty whose talent for toxicology had won her a post at the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office. But her sweet smile masked a dark side. She'd developed a taste for methamphetamine in high school, and six months after her marriage to Greg, she'd begun seeking secret trysts with other men. At the time of her husband's death, Rossum was engaged in an illicit affair with her married boss. Investigators found that the Medical Examiner's Office was missing supplies of meth and fentanyl, the narcotic that had killed her husband. With each clue discovered, another piece of Rossum's "good girl" facade fell away. What the world would eventually see was the true face of a murderer - and the hand of justice...POISONED LOVE-Caitlin Rother
