Isabella Cueto, chronic disease reporter for Stat, joins host Krys Boyd to discuss the harms of alcohol from elevated cancer risk to liver damage to its impact on violent crime and why public health officials don't seem to have a cohesive strategy to combat its very real consequences. As America is beginning to wrap its arms around the fentanyl crisis, a new kind of drug epidemic is emerging. It is faster, more addictive, more lethal and powered by synthetic drugs — substances that can be made almost anywhere. Matt Richtel, a science and health reporter, and Azam Ahmed, an international investigative correspondent, have been pursuing a series of stories looking at the rise of ultra-potent lab-made drugs. On today's episode of “The Daily,” Azam explains how these drugs are beginning to take hold and brings us inside the effort to do something about it. Guest: Azam Ahmed, an international investigative correspondent for The New York Times. Background reading:  No pills or needles, just paper: This is how deadly drugs are changing. Connor O'Keeffe argues that California's wildfire crisis is not simply a climate story but a government failure story. The state has monopolized nearly all wilderness land, refused to manage it adequately, and then distorted insurance markets to push more people into high-risk fire zones, making fires both larger and more deadly than they would be under a private property regime with real liability.Recorded in San Diego, California, on April 25, 2026.

Special Guest Expert: Mary DeMocker I remember, as a child, learning that you turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth. You close the refrigerator quickly and turn off the lights when you leave the room—little things- and they needed to be taught because otherwise, I admit, I hadn't thought much about leaving the tap on, standing in front of the open fridge for minutes figuring out what I wanted to eat or leaving on the lights in every conceivable room. I've needed to teach it to my kids too- but of course, they sometimes forget. Sometimes protecting the Earth isn't the first thought that comes to mind when you're standing in the shower, letting the hot water fall on your head and back. For some, climate change might feel distant- like something happening elsewhere but not right here at home. Although this seems to be changing a bit- many families, all over the world have found that climate change has begun to touch their lives. Deadlier wild fires, increasingly crazy weather, additional information of melting ice caps on the nightly news- information coming to us through news anchors as well as out of the mouths of younger and younger activists that are demanding awareness and action. My own children have quoted information from Weird But True books and nature documentaries about what's going on with the polar bears and tropical forests. The truth is, we are all feeling the effects and we are all contributing to the effects of climate change-- AND we are also able to help solve the problem. Of course, this means we must have the discussions that can bring about the change. It starts with opening our mouths and our hearts so that we can lay it all on the table. How do we give our children the facts about climate change- from discussions of fossil fuels to fluctuating animal habitats to sustainable and destructive energy sources so that they are in the know? And how can we, as families, alter how we live our lives, in small consistent ways, that will help create a healthier future for our loved ones? We need a climate revolution—and it starts at home, with us. Our special guest today is Mary Democker. Mary DeMocker's book, The Parents' Guide to Climate Revolution: 100 Ways to Build a Fossil-Free Future, Raise Empowered Kids, and Still Get a Good Night's Sleep is a finalist for the 2019 Oregon Book Award and has been featured on Yale Climate Connections and recommended on NPR and in The New York Times. Mary writes and speaks widely about parenting in a changing climate, helping parents, educators, clinicians, and young people find a positive role in the global transition to a clean energy future. She lives in Eugene, Oregon with her husband and sometimes her son, a freshman in college. His sister older graduated from college last year and is a teacher. Inside the Deadly German U-Boats That Brought Britain to Its Knees (But Were Deadlier for Their Own Crews)

History Unplugged Podcast

Over the course of World War II, Germany’s submariners sank over three thousand Allied ships, nearly three-quarters of Allied shipping losses in all theaters of the war. Winston Churchill famously declared the only thing that truly frightened him during World War II was the U-boat threat. But the treat was more imagined than real. The actual capability of the German Navy was somewhat limited. Some historians think that the Germans would have been better off in WWII if they had built no navy at all and devoted those resources to the army and the Luftwaffe. In the process the submariners endured horrific conditions and suffered a 75 percent death rate, the highest of any arm of service in the conflict. The campaign began with daring, high-profile successes that fostered a dangerous overconfidence, most notably the sinking of the HMS Royal Oak in 1939 by U-47, which killed 835 British crewmen. Yet, despite these early victories—when the U-boat wolfpacks inflicted devastating losses on weakly defended Allied convoys—the force was never able to maintain the scale needed for a knock-out blow. By the time Germany had sufficient numbers, the industrial and military might of the United States, coupled with increasingly effective Allied countermeasures, had already passed the U-boat's moment of maximum threat. As the war progressed, the elite, superbly trained pre-war crews were wiped out and replaced by those with less training, leading to a steady deterioration in effectiveness. Today’s guest is Roger Moorhouse, author of “Wolfpack: Inside Hitler’s U-Boat War.” We look at how Germany’s U-boat campaign challenged British naval supremacy and brought international trade to its knees. We follow the story of these U-Boat crews from the enthusiasm of the war’s early days, buoyed with optimism about their cause, through the challenges of the Allied counterthreat, to the final horrors of enemy capture and death in the depths.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week on The Heart of Innovation, hosts Kym McNicholas and Dr. John Phillips sit down for a powerful, patient-driven holiday special—one that reveals what people living with Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) truly wish for this season. PAD is more common than prostate, breast, and colon cancer combined, yet still misunderstood. Our in-studio audience opened up about the physical and emotional toll of this disease—leg pain, cramps, burning, neuropathy, and wounds that won't heal—and the everyday battles most people never see. Their holiday wish list was honest, raw, and deeply human: More doctors trained in advanced limb-saving tools and techniques Fewer preventable amputations related to PAD and diabetes A world where fewer people smoke or vape, as nicotine and cannabis use fuel earlier, more aggressive PAD And a collective wish for patients themselves to enter the new year committed to realistic goals, healthier habits, and becoming active partners in their own care This conversation is heartfelt, unfiltered, and filled with the courage of people who refuse to give up hope. If you or someone you love is living with PAD, you won't want to miss this episode. One in 4 people is infected with this silent killer disease that's deadlier than the plague. You may even have this infection! Find out about this deadly microbial threat and how to stay healthy so you don't become the next victim. 0:00 Introduction: Infectious disease deadlier than the plague 1:30 Latent infections 2:59 Tuberculosis facts 4:39 Tuberculosis and vitamin D7:38 Immune system function8:20 Sun exposure and infrared rays Many people are infected with a disease that's worse than the plague! The plague killed 200 million people, and in total, this bacterium has killed 1 billion! It's the world's deadliest infectious disease and kills more people than HIV and malaria combined. It kills around 1.3 million people each year, yet you don't hear much about it. Latent infections such as herpes, EBV, CMV, HPV, and Hepatitis B and C are able to go in and out of remission. Today, we're going to talk about the pathogen that gives you tuberculosis.Tuberculosis (TB) doesn't evade the immune system, it invades it. TB hides inside the macrophage, which is responsible for cleaning up bacteria and infections in the body. TB affects more people in the northern hemisphere away from the equator, and its incidence increases in the winter. Older people or those with type 2 diabetes, HIV, or low vitamin D are at an increased risk of an active TB infection. TB blocks the vitamin D receptor, which lowers your immune function. There was an uptick in TB outbreaks in the 80s when sun phobia was promoted. This campaign significantly reduced vitamin D levels by reducing sun exposure. Before the development of antibiotics, people with tuberculosis would go to sanatoriums for fresh air and sunlight exposure. Cod liver oil was also shown to be beneficial for people with tuberculosis infections. The immune system destroys TB with a compound called cathelicidin, a broad-spectrum antimicrobial that depends on vitamin D. Not only is the sun vital for vitamin D production, but it also exposes you to infrared light. Infrared reverses mitochondrial damage and can increase vitamin D signaling, further protecting you from a TB infection. A genocidal militia called the Rapid Support Forces has been laying siege to the city of El Fasher, in Darfur, for nearly 500 days. But in recent weeks, the situation has grown far worse. Some 250,000 people are now trapped in the city and are enduring relentless bombardment from drones and artillery. Food is scarce, and an untold number of people are starving to death. To make matters worse, recent moves by the Rapid Support Forces suggest they may be preparing for an all-out assault on the city. This is a pivotal moment in Sudan's civil war, which erupted in April 2023 when two generals—once allies in toppling a civilian-led government—turned their guns on each other, unleashing what is now the world's largest humanitarian crisis. After two and a half years of fighting, the Sudanese Armed Forces control most of the country's east, including Khartoum and a key port city. The Rapid Support Forces, meanwhile, hold much of the west, including resource-rich Darfur—with one critical exception: Darfur's historic capital, El Fasher. Joining me to discuss this precarious moment in Sudan's war and what might finally bring an end to the conflict is Noaman Elwaleed Mousa, a PhD student in political science at the University of California, Los Angeles, who studies civil wars in Africa. We begin with the situation on the ground in El Fasher and the broader significance of this battle for Sudan's future.

The bloody history of childbirth is riddled with death and despair. It's a burden that was carried almost entirely by women, behind closed doors, something men took no part in. And, because of that, we know very little about it today. What we do know is that it was an extremely dangerous affair. Mortality was so high, many women wrote a will as soon as they found out they were pregnant. The 18th century saw the beginning of the "medicalization" of childbirth when inexperienced forcep bearing male doctors got involved and began a crusade to put a stop to midwifery. But, ironically, childbirth didn't get any safer after that. It actually got deadlier, at first. The COVID-19 pandemic was the most severe global public health emergency in over 100 years. Deadlier than the influenza virus, COVID-19 claimed more than 1.1 million lives in the United States by 2023. Had it not been for the rapid development and deployment of vaccines, many more would have died. To further combat the pandemic, US and international public health agencies enacted unprecedented school closures, lockdowns, and border closures that inflicted collateral damage on children, other vulnerable populations, and the rest of the public. These preventative measures exacerbated substance abuse and mental health problems that persist today. Public health and media organizations suppressed and often censored scientific experts with dissenting opinions and recommendations that might have mitigated much of the collateral damage.Award-winning Canadian filmmaker Vanessa Dylyn (Matter of Fact Media) produced and directed the documentary COVID Collateral: Where Do We Go for Truth?, which examines the global pandemic response, the suppression of scientific discourse, and lessons for approaching the next pandemic. www.covidcollateral.com.Please join us for a film screening in the Cato Institute Hayek Auditorium, followed by a roundtable discussion of the film and its lessons featuring our distinguished panel.
