Taking Slow Travel to an Unbelievable Level In 1999, Ian Coates set out for an adventure that was supposed to be just four months. But, he got a bit sidetracked and was a few years late. He had no plan, no map, just the desire to explore and experience, and a positive, easy going attitude that literally took him places. He experienced cultures and people in ways that most of us miss as we rush from place to place. An incredible tolerance for things that go wrong and patience that is almost unbelievable, retirement just may have been the best thing that ever happened to Ian.  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ian.coates.923 Twitter: https://twitter.com/iancoateshonda Overland Expo Overland Expo was founded in 2009, an event drawing in people from all over the world to both the West and East of the United States. ARR RAW Round Table Discussions With Motorcycle Adventure Travellers - Featuring Grant Johnson, Brian Rix, Shirley Hardy-Rix, Sam Manicom, Graham Field and Jim Martin.  ARR RAW February 2018 Topics: Where Do You Rest Your Arse?
Ideas for comfortable camp chairs, camp pads, and other ingenious ideas. Yellow Tents: In the January episode of RAW we talked about yellow tents and insects. Listener, Mike Samsen, wrote in with his thoughts: "Someone said NOT to get a yellow tent because it attracts bugs. Being the happy owner of a yellow Redverz, I was distressed by my apparent stupidity (though I’ve never had an issue.) Anyhow, being a recovering management consultant, I had to do a little research. As it turns out, it appears yellow is a good color. According to Sciencing.com, "Insects are attracted to ultraviolet and blue light, including black and florescent." Pest Cemetery.com maintains that "yellow lights or the color yellow actually prevents mosquitoes from biting you. Yellow is a color mosquitoes can hardly see and when they do see the color it confuses them. Consequently yellow clothing may be a wise choice to prevent an evening out from turning itchy."

So, we discuss the use of yellow tents again and set some things straight. Listener Questions:
Advice about Getting Back on the Bike After a Crash:
Geoff Goins asks for input from the RAW panel: I know it has been covered on ARR, and here and there in several other episodes, but I would love some insight from your panel about getting back on after a big crash? The mental barriers and how to deal with the fear. I had a crash last fall that resulted in surgery and a wrecked bike, and I am having doubts about getting back on. I know Sam has had a couple spills, and still gets on and rides. Convincing Someone that Travel Can be Safe:
Huw Gwilliam has done some motorcycle traveling in the USA with his girlfriend, but now wants to go to Central and South America. He wants to know how to convince her that it will be safe and she shouldn't worry about it. And how does he avoid the stress of worrying about her while on the trip? A Question for Sam Manicom:
Mark Plank has a question for Sam Manicom: [He] has mentioned in interviews (Horizons Unlimited DVDs) that his friends at the pub laughed at him when he told them that he wanted to ride a motorcycle around the world. Now with miles and miles of travels and numerous books and appearances, what do these same friends say about Sam? Mark Wilsmore at the Ace Cafe in London The Ace Cafe in London, England has a history going back as far as 1938. Beginning as a roadside diner catering to hungry truckers, it evolved in to a popular motorcycle hang out. Setbacks led to the shut down of the iconic motorbike meeting place when it was bombed in the Second World War and again with the evolution of the Austin Mini. Although it had been resurrected a couple of times, the Ace Cafe didn’t realize it’s full potential until Mark Wilsmore’s plan and determination to reopen the it came in to fruition. From the Ace Cafe in London was born an international following which lead to the opening of Ace Cafes in other locations, including Beijing and the United States. Today, the Ace Cafe is a place for petrolheads, people who love the smell of gasoline and oil, motorbikes and cars. Somewhere to hang out and talk, to swap ideas, to show their vehicles, to enjoy themselves. To sit down, listen to music, have a meal and a cup of coffee with like minded people. Mark Wilsmore is the owner of the Ace Cafe. You can read more about the Ace Cafe and check for upcoming events at https://london.acecafe.com/. According to the Motorcycle Council of NSW, Inc in Australia, the symptoms of fatigue for drivers of enclosed vehicles may differ from a fatigued motorcyclist. It’s important to recognize these signs. *Driver Fatigue Symptoms include: •loss of concentration •drowsiness, yawning •slow reactions •sore or tired eyes •boredom •feeling irritable and restless •making fewer and larger steering corrections •missing road signs •having difficulty in staying in the lane •having microsleeps. *The symptoms of rider fatigue include: •joint and muscle stiffness •pain or weakness in hands and feet •loss of concentration •slow or impaired judgment and reactions. *Excerpts taken from http://roadsafety.mccofnsw.org.au/a/50.html And the scary thing is that although a rider may feel fully awake, they may actually be fatigued without realizing it, and make a judgement error, resulting in crashing on a curve or an accident while overtaking another vehicle. Because riding a motorcycle is different than riding a car, in that it is more demanding both mentally and physically, it’s likely you’ll be tired from the physical challenges rather than boredom. So how to beat this? Who better to ask than four people who ride motorcycles and have experience in dealing with fatigue: a scientist, a pillion, a racer and a long distance rider. Guests on this episode: Sam Marcora A Director of Research at Kent University and a motorcyclist, in 2013 Sam Marcora studied fatigue in motorbike riders on a 3 month ride from London to Beijing and through Central Asia and Tibet. www.kent.ac.uk/sportsciences/staff/academic/s-marcora.html Christophe Barriere Varju An endurance rider and a Motocross Champion, Christophe Barrier Varju has ridden in the Dakar Rally several times, the toughest and most dangerous motorsport race in the world. Dimitrios Tournas was born in Greece, moved to the Netherlands when he was 29 and now lives in the United States. If you’ve seen the movie Yes Man, starring Jim Carrey, then you’ve already got a pretty good insight in to Dimitri. Although he is more sensible about the lengths he will go to, he does like to seize opportunities to complete tasks that are achievable.  In 2004, when visiting Greece he had a motorcycle accident that left him with the realization that life was not infinite, and that even if you don’t take risks, and live your life cautiously, the day will come when you may be at the end of your life looking back.  Although the accident deterred him from riding for many years, his interest in it didn’t evaporate. When he moved to the United States his passion was reignited and it set him on the path to expanding his comfort zone. He once again took up riding, and he purchased a dual sport motorcycle. When he saw a GS Trophy poster at the BMW dealership, even with no off-road riding experience, he decided to sign up for a riding school course with his sights set on competing in the challenging adventure. With an impressive bucket list and the willingness to put himself out there and try just about anything, you won't hear Dimitri say the words “no” or “can’t do”, without due consideration. ARR RIDER SKILLS: Hand Strength & Stamina Instructor: Bret Tkacs Having a strong grip is an important part of motorcycle riding to ensure you have proper control when it comes to the front brake, clutch and throttle. And when we stop riding for the season in the winter, or for other reasons, we need to make sure to maintain the strength in our hands, or when it comes time to ride again, you may experience weakness or hand cramping, especially in heavy traffic or when riding off-road. Bret Tkacs explains how to maintain your hand strength in the off season and how it affects your riding. Episodes that Inspired, Educated or Made us Laugh The end of the calendar year is when we often take the time to reflect on the past year and look ahead to what we hope to accomplish. Reflections can help us choose and plan goals, as we think about events and achievements in the year that has just passed. So, of course, we looked through the episodes we’ve produced this year, the guests we’ve had on and had a great time listening to excerpts from some of the shows. We’ve learned a lot, felt sad at times, have been inspired, and even laughed out loud at some of the stories we’ve heard. It’s been a rewarding year for us and we hope you’ve enjoyed the variety of podcast topics.  We’re grateful to all our guests for sharing their stories, and we can’t pick our favourites, well, because we just like them all! But, we’re going to share a few with you to reflect on what a great year 2017 has been.  To listen to the full episodes, follow the links below: Elspeth Beard: Lone Rider: Globe-Trotting Before the Internet Luke Gelmi: An Oblivious Adventure in Africa on a Royal Enfield Alanna & Mike Clear: In It For the Long Haul: Motorcycle Travel & Secrets of Lasting Relationships Show Sponsors: Max BMW BestRest Products Green Chile Adventure Gear Motobriiz IMS Products Motobird Adventures Music by Jason Shaw at www.audionautix.com This adventure motorcycle travel podcast is brought to you by Canoe West Media, producers of Adventure Rider Radio and ARR RAW, motorcycle travel roundtable discussions.
