Being self-reliant can be likened to having insurance—an ability to take care of oneself if things go awry. There's nothing inherently wrong with accepting help; it's a human instinct, and in the context of motorcycle travel, assistance often leads to friendship and discovery. However, it raises the question of wisdom and responsibility to travel as a dependent, relying too much on others. In this episode of RAW, we discuss ways to become a self-reliant traveler with topics including camping and accommodations, route planning, financial preparedness and repairs, and more. Two important things to consider when planning your trip are how you're going to finance your adventure and how to best equip yourself to handle an emergency. While it's not impossible to fund yourself while travelling on a motorcycle, it does require careful planning, budgeting, and adaptability. Many travellers have successfully navigated expenses and income by being resourceful and flexible. The RAW panel discusses novel ways to make money on the road and some important things to keep in mind while doing so. And we also talk about being prepared to handle emergencies while travelling. But, before discussing how a motorcycle overlander prepares for emergencies on a trip, it's important to understand what constitutes an emergency. We'll also cover what should be planned, anticipated, or prepared for, and what can be left to chance. Photos and links related to this episode can be found on our website. The Brilliant Corners were a British indie pop band from Bristol who recorded throughout the 1980s and into the early 1990s. The group was formed in 1983, taking the name from the Thelonious Monk jazz album, Brilliant Corners. The line-up included David Woodward (b. Avonmouth, Bristol, England; vocals, guitar), Chris Galvin (1959 – 22 December 1998; bass guitar), Winston Forbes (lead guitar, percussion, backing vocals), Bob Morris (drums) and Dan (occasional trumpet and keyboards). A later addition was Phil Elvins on guitar. The band's first releases were early examples of indie pop, with three singles being released in 1984 on their own SS20 label. Their first (mini-)album, Growing Up Absurd, appeared the following year. With an explosion of indie pop groups in 1986, their May release Fruit Machine EP gained them both attention and radio airplay, followed by a second mini-album, What's In A Word. "Brian Rix", a re-recorded version of a track from the LP, with added trumpet, and a tribute to Rix, the "king of farce", was issued as a single, the proceeds going to Mencap, the charity of which Rix was chairman. The video, featuring Woodward running Rix-like around a couch with his trousers around his ankles, was shown on The Tube, further raising the band's profile. In March 1988, the band set up another label, McQueen, and released third album, Somebody Up There Likes Me, followed by a collection of their sought-after early singles, Everything I Ever Wanted. Two more albums followed in 1989 (Joy Ride) and 1990 (Hooked), followed by a second compilation, Creamy Stuff, in 1991. They released A History Of White Trash in 1993 before splitting up. Woodward and Galvin formed the Experimental Pop Band in 1995. Galvin died from cancer in 1998.

ARR RAW Round Table Discussions With Motorcycle Adventure Travellers - Featuring Grant Johnson, Brian Rix, Shirley Hardy-Rix, Sam Manicom, Graham Field and Jim Martin. ARR RAW February 2018 Topics: Where Do You Rest Your Arse? Ideas for comfortable camp chairs, camp pads, and other ingenious ideas. Yellow Tents: In the January episode of RAW we talked about yellow tents and insects. Listener, Mike Samsen, wrote in with his thoughts: "Someone said NOT to get a yellow tent because it attracts bugs. Being the happy owner of a yellow Redverz, I was distressed by my apparent stupidity (though I’ve never had an issue.) Anyhow, being a recovering management consultant, I had to do a little research. As it turns out, it appears yellow is a good color. According to Sciencing.com, "Insects are attracted to ultraviolet and blue light, including black and florescent." Pest Cemetery.com maintains that "yellow lights or the color yellow actually prevents mosquitoes from biting you. Yellow is a color mosquitoes can hardly see and when they do see the color it confuses them. Consequently yellow clothing may be a wise choice to prevent an evening out from turning itchy." So, we discuss the use of yellow tents again and set some things straight. Listener Questions: Advice about Getting Back on the Bike After a Crash: Geoff Goins asks for input from the RAW panel: I know it has been covered on ARR, and here and there in several other episodes, but I would love some insight from your panel about getting back on after a big crash? The mental barriers and how to deal with the fear. I had a crash last fall that resulted in surgery and a wrecked bike, and I am having doubts about getting back on. I know Sam has had a couple spills, and still gets on and rides. Convincing Someone that Travel Can be Safe: Huw Gwilliam has done some motorcycle traveling in the USA with his girlfriend, but now wants to go to Central and South America. He wants to know how to convince her that it will be safe and she shouldn't worry about it. And how does he avoid the stress of worrying about her while on the trip? A Question for Sam Manicom: Mark Plank has a question for Sam Manicom: [He] has mentioned in interviews (Horizons Unlimited DVDs) that his friends at the pub laughed at him when he told them that he wanted to ride a motorcycle around the world. Now with miles and miles of travels and numerous books and appearances, what do these same friends say about Sam? According to the Motorcycle Council of NSW, Inc in Australia, the symptoms of fatigue for drivers of enclosed vehicles may differ from a fatigued motorcyclist. It’s important to recognize these signs. *Driver Fatigue Symptoms include: •loss of concentration •drowsiness, yawning •slow reactions •sore or tired eyes •boredom •feeling irritable and restless •making fewer and larger steering corrections •missing road signs •having difficulty in staying in the lane •having microsleeps. *The symptoms of rider fatigue include: •joint and muscle stiffness •pain or weakness in hands and feet •loss of concentration •slow or impaired judgment and reactions. *Excerpts taken from http://roadsafety.mccofnsw.org.au/a/50.html And the scary thing is that although a rider may feel fully awake, they may actually be fatigued without realizing it, and make a judgement error, resulting in crashing on a curve or an accident while overtaking another vehicle. Because riding a motorcycle is different than riding a car, in that it is more demanding both mentally and physically, it’s likely you’ll be tired from the physical challenges rather than boredom. So how to beat this? Who better to ask than four people who ride motorcycles and have experience in dealing with fatigue: a scientist, a pillion, a racer and a long distance rider. Guests on this episode: Sam Marcora A Director of Research at Kent University and a motorcyclist, in 2013 Sam Marcora studied fatigue in motorbike riders on a 3 month ride from London to Beijing and through Central Asia and Tibet. www.kent.ac.uk/sportsciences/staff/academic/s-marcora.html Christophe Barriere Varju An endurance rider and a Motocross Champion, Christophe Barrier Varju has ridden in the Dakar Rally several times, the toughest and most dangerous motorsport race in the world. ARR RAW Round Table Discussion with Travellers Featuring Grant Johnson, Brian Rix, Shirley Hardy-Rix, Sam Manicom, Graham Field and Jim Martin. Basic Mechanical Knowledge For Motorcycle Travel: What is the absolute minimum mechanical knowledge you should have before undertaking an extended trip? And what things should you be checking regularly to prevent or foresee possible breakdowns? Choosing a Travel Mate: How to figure out if you’re compatible? Do you do a short run/overnight first or? How do you handle it when on the road for a time, you decide it isn’t working and you want to go it alone? Especially if you’re in a far off place? ARR RAW Listeners Questions Answered: James Gale: How stinky is too stinky? I'm interested to know what the esteemed RAW panel smell like. (No, my curiosity is not born of a fetish. It's purely practical and social). When you're going on a long journey what do you do about clean clothes? How many changes of clothes are reasonable given the lack of a chest-of-drawers and limited cupboard space on a bike? Do you plan to stop in towns and use a laundromat or motel facility? Do you take some soap and wash your clothes in a river? Or do you keep riding until the police arrest you for excessive air pollution? Noel Bowerman: What place did you find confronting? How did you come to terms with it? Gary Turner: What do you do when you have free time on the trip? I.E. reading, sleep, laundry, drinking? **If you have a question for the RAW panel, send it to us by filling out the form at https://www.adventureriderradio.com/rawquestion/. Shorai Lithium Batteries Phuc Lam from Shorai Inc, and also an avid motorcyclist, explains lithium batteries in this episode. Since 2010, Shorai has been the maker of lithium iron phosphate batteries. Shorai LFX batteries are up to 80 percent lighter than equal performance lead acid batteries, which can mean saving anywhere from 2 to 20 pounds, depending what kind of bike you ride. They operate at a higher voltage range and maintain a higher voltage level during cranking, which means your motorcycle starts more quickly. The lithium batteries can be charged using a lead acid charger or by using the charger specifically designed for Shorai’s LFX lithium batteries. And the Shorai lithium batteries are compatible with modern motorcycle charging systems. Easy to install, Shorai batteries come with a three year pro-rated warranty and can be purchased at Shorai dealers or online on their website. (NASDAQ: GRMN), today announced the new zūmo 395LM and zūmo 595LM motorcycle navigators. The rugged, weatherproof (*1) models offer Garmin Adventurous Routing™ so riders can select the level of twists and hills on every journey. The zūmo 395/595LM presents innovative features specifically designed for motorcyclists with the introduction of rider alerts, helpful smart features, new streaming music options and much more. “What’s exciting about the new zūmo models is that they are designed to find those adventurous winding roads that riders typically crave,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of worldwide sales. “The ability to stream Spotify music will also enhance the thrill of every ride.” Garmin Adventurous Routing™ options elevate the ride by finding routes with curves and hills, while limiting major highways that offer unchanging and often wearisome roads. In order to enhance the adventure, both zūmo models allow riders to control music and media from a compatible smartphone or MP3 player. (*2) The 595 model lets riders stream popular music services2 such as Spotify® and Pandora® right into their headset or helmet (sold separately), offering easy control options using the glove-friendly zūmo screen display. Garmin recognizes safety as a top priority for motorcyclists – that’s why both zūmo models include new rider alerts to help increase situational awareness. Riders can be notified of upcoming sharp curves, nearby red light and speed cameras (*3), animal crossings and many other useful alerts. In addition, riders will be prompted with relevant state helmet law notifications (US/CAN) when crossing state borders. The new zūmo devices allow riders to make and receive calls (*4) while their hands remain firmly on the handlebars. Spoken directions can also be heard when paired with a compatible headset or helmet (sold separately) in order to stay conveniently connected during a ride. The zūmo 595LM model can pair seamlessly with the Smartphone link app (*5) from Garmin to give riders access to new exciting features for motorcyclists. The use of the app allows the zūmo 595LM to conveniently display smartphone information alongside the navigation screen. Riders can view texts, app notifications and other helpful data such as live weather radar and traffic (subscription may be required). Additionally, the new LiveTrack feature lets riders share their ride so friends can track their location. The new motorcycle navigators offer a rugged, glove-friendly design that can endure fuel vapors, UV rays and harsh weather.1 The bright sunlight-readable display of the zūmo 395LM has a 4.3-inch touchscreen while the zūmo 595LM boasts a high-resolution 5-inch transflective touchscreen display to further enhance visibility. Both devices include lifetime map (*6) updates for North America along with motorcycle-specific points of interest (POIs) such as repair services, dealers and more. The new devices maintain the legacy zūmo features that riders have come to expect. Some of these features include: Dynamic Fuel Stops, which suggests fuel stops based on the distance the rider’s fuel is expected to last; the Service History Log to help simplify bike maintenance records; Roundtrip Routing allows riders to plan their route based on time, distance or location; preloaded Foursquare® data offers millions of new and popular places; and Garmin Real Directions™ guides riders using recognizable landmarks and traffic lights. The new zūmo series is compatible with Garmin VIRB® action cameras (sold separately) to start and stop recording footage directly from the zūmo display screen. Riders can also monitor motorcycle tire pressure on the zūmo display with the Tire Pressure Monitor Sensor system from Garmin (sold separately). The zūmo 395LM has a suggested retail price of $599.99 and the zūmo 595LM is $899.99. Both devices are expected to be available in April of this year. For more information, visit garmin.com/zumo. Episode 4: Lane Splitting & Filtering, Essential Repair Skills & Tools and Wildlife Encounters ARR RAW Round Table Discussion with Travellers. Grant Johnson, Brian Rix, Shirley Hardy-Rix, Sam Manicom and Jim Martin. Missing this week is regular Graham Field. Episode 4 Topics: Lane splitting & Filtering It’s a dangerous situation for a motorcyclist to be caught in traffic, the stop and go, distracted drivers, etc. The University of California at Berkeley published a report in May 2015 that says “motorcyclists who split lanes in heavy traffic are significantly less likely to be struck from behind by other motorists”. The National Agenda for Motorcycle Safety studied safety implications of lane splitting. “A motorcycle’s narrow width can allow it to pass between lanes of stopped or slow moving cars on roadways where the lanes are wide enough to offer an adequate gap. This option can provide an escape route for motorcyclists who would otherwise be trapped or struck from behind. There is evidence that travelling between lanes of stopped or slow-moving cars (i.e. land splitting) on multiple-lane roads (such as interstate highways) slightly reduces crash frequency compared with staying within the lane and moving with other traffic.” Lane splitting and filtering are a normal practice in many countries…Europe…Asia… riders are expected and sometimes required to pass between vehicles and advance to the front of the group. If you are not accustomed to lane splitting and filtering (prohibited in most of United States and Canada) and you go to a country where it is law or expected, how can you be prepared for that? What if you don’t want to lane split - it’s too scary or intimidating - how do you handle that? Do you avoid it? Just not do it? Essential Repair Skills & Tools? How to Deal With Breakdowns? Carl Reese - Endurance Rider & Record Setter You’ve probably heard of the Cannonball Baker or Cannonball Run. In 1933 Erwin George “Cannon Ball” Baker drove from New York City to Los Angeles in a Graham-Paige model 57 Blue Streak 8 in 53.5 hours. No one broke that record for 40 years. Car and Driver writer Brock Yates and editor Steve Smith organized the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, which took place 5 times between 1971 and 1979. It was an illegal road race from coast to coast to celebrate the United States Interstate Highway System and to protest strict traffic laws which were coming in to effect at that time. The first run was not a competitive race, as there was only one team running in a 1971 Dodge Custom Sportsman van. But by the time they were running the last race it was known as a wild race. They ran everything from Ferraris to pick-up trucks. It was mostly a secret event, with few witnesses. As more and more people have tried to rush to break Cannonball Baker’s time, the route has become established and is commonly referred to as the Cannonball Baker or Cannonball Run. Carl Reese is a contractor from California, and in his spare time he’s an endurance rider that has set seven world records in less than a year. One being the solo motorcycle “Cannonball” from Los Angeles to New York. Carl Reese set out to break the motorcycle record previously set by George Egloff in 1983, who completed the cross country run in 42 hours. Carl broke the record completing the run in 38 hours and 49 minutes. He’s now working on a documentary that highlights the history of transcontinental driving records. www.carlreese.net Best Tips for Extended Motorcycle Travel from the Experts We’ve consulted with some skilled and knowledgeable riders, one being a Professor at Kent University who has studied rider fatigue on what advice they would have for the average rider who wants to do some extended riding on their motorcycle. Most people ride motorcycles for pleasure, and many as a means or preferred means of transportation. And we are quite used to our gas powered engine, with lots of torque, tanks that hold enough fuel to travel long distances and easy refuelling stations. Hey, it’s a tradition and who doesn’t love to hear the power in their engine? In the last few years though, motorcycle manufacturers have been introducing electric motorcycles. And while it is still a very new thing to us diehard bikers, electric motorcycles are starting to gain a toehold in this competitive industry. Till recently, it’s been the smaller manufacturers that have been leading this possible upcoming trend of quiet moto transport, but the major manufacturers are starting to come on board. When comparing performance of gas power to electric powered motorcycle, a few key points stand out. While traditional gas powered motorcycles are averaging 200 miles on a tank, electric powered motorcycles are only reaching just about half of that amount. But they require almost no maintenance and there are very few moving parts. You can refuel your gas powered motorcycle at almost every corner in any city and almost every town around the world, but it may be more difficult to find a place to recharge an electric bike. And when you do you may need to dedicate some time to this if using a regular 110 V outlet, as it may take up to 10 hours or more. But, dollar for dollar, with fuel costs being so high in some countries, the electric motorcycle could save you $100’s of dollars a year.Electric Motos - Neck Braces - ARR Show Announcement: ARR RAWElectric Moto - Victory Motorcycles - Josh KattMost people ride motorcycles for pleasure, and many as a means or preferred means of transportation. If you were able to reduce some of that risk by wearing a neck brace would you take advantage of that?My main question going into testing of the Leatt STX Road neck brace was: Is the added protection this offers worth the additional bulk and effort of having take it on and off every time I ride? The STX Road neck brace is Leatt’s “street” specific entry in their lineup. It shares the same technology and many of the same features as one of Leatt’s racetrack or off road specific braces but has a lower profile and some design differences that make it more adept for street/adventure riding. These differences include a gap in the front of the brace for zipper access, rear scapula wings designed to fit around a back protector and most importantly it is optimized to fit over your riding gear. The general concept of the Leatt neck brace is to prevent extreme forward, backward or sideways extension of the neck in the event of an accident or impact. It also helps prevent compression of the spine by transferring impact force from the helmet to the brace. According to Leatt the use of one of their neck braces reduces the force of hyper extension (over-bending of the head in rearward direction) by 46%, posterior hyper-translation (extreme movement of the head and helmet to the rear) by 17%, hyper- flexion (over bending of the head in forward direction) by 21%, lateral hyper-flexion (over-bending of the head to one side) by 20% and coupled axial loading (axial force on the spine) by 17%. Those are real numbers that make a very strong argument for wearing one of their braces. Additionally the STX is CE tested and certified as personal protective equipment. After using the brace for a short period of time it became easy to forget that I was even wearing it. With it’s lightweight build and unobtrusive fit it seems to meld into your riding gear. Also after donning and doffing the STX multiple times with and without gloves in different circumstances it became second nature. The STX has a simple clamshell design that can hinge or be opened on either side with bright red clasps to help draw attention to emergency personnel in the event of an accident. Almost immediately after I started using the Leatt brace I new that the added “hassle” of this extra piece of equipment would be worth it, mostly because it wasn’t really a hassle at all. Honestly the most difficult aspect of getting used to wearing this brace was having the collar on my riding jacket fully fastened with the zipper all the way up. Head checks were another concern I had as far as the day-to-day use of this brace. I had heard from other riders that this was a real issue in older Leatt models, but I found that after a few rides it was just another thing about the STX that I didn’t notice much. My head checks have become much more pronounced because I cannot just glance down and back to either side over my shoulder like I used to but I think that is a good thing. Now when I go to do a head check I keep my chin up and look over my shoulder instinctively getting a good look at my blind spot. In my case it has helped me develop a positive habit. It also helps that the STX Road was designed for street and adventure use giving it a lower profile on the shoulder for this very reason. It may also be worth mentioning that I have a world-class short neck so if I can look over my shoulders to do head checks with this brace on then so can you!Quality and fit have a lot to do with how easily the STX became part of my riding routine. Strait out of the box I was impressed with the STX. Leatt ships every unit with detailed fitting instructions, different sizing pieces, a optional harness to keep the brace in position and all the tools necessary to make adjustments. In my case it took only a few minutes to swap out the medium spacers that come installed on the large size unit for the large spacers. After that one adjustment I haven’t looked back, the fit has been excellent. Leatt has very helpful sizing charts online to ensure you order the proper unit as well. The adjustments you make when you receive the brace are mostly just to dial in the fit for the particular gear you wear or unusual dimensions you might have. All and all I think that the Leatt STX Road neck brace is a fantastic product. The added level of protection is well worth the short adjustment period it takes to get used to wearing it. After several months of testing I feel almost naked riding without it, like I forgot my helmet or gloves. Leatt offers phenomenal quality and more experience in this field than any other manufacturer. After all they invented this style of neck brace. I have made the STX Road a permanent part of my riding gear and I can’t recommend it enough.Pros: - Phenomenal quality- High level of protection- Vasty array of sizing optionsCons:- Expensive- Takes some getting used to- Can make contact with some Bluetooth communication units depending on the helmetMSRP: $399.00 UShttp://www.leatt.com First Ride Up the DivideSpencer Hill and two newbie riders plan a trip from Mexico to Canada, off road up the Continental Divide to showcase the accessibility of adventure rider. http://www.thegeardude.com/#!First-Ride-Up-The-Divide/c20ru/564107d60cf21009be7ef127ARR RAW is a spin-off show from Adventure Rider Radio that has a different format and audio style. Shirley Hardy Rix and Brian Rix are seasoned world travellers and they have most recently been on a trip which includes Russia and the Stans. We’ve had them on the show in previous episodes giving us mini updates as to how their journey was going, and now, being back again in Australia, they have come on the show to share an incredible trip report including, at least our first introduction to, ’the forest people’ and how a motorcyclist travelling through their region was robbed and murdered. So, if you like mysteries and have ever been curious about motorcycle travel in Russia, bike shipping, internet access and how to overcome language barriers with one tiny book, then be sure to listen to this fascinating account of their experiences. Pillion Power Ups and Downs of One or Two Bikes The ups and downs between riding with two bikes or one for two riders. Brian Rix and Shirley Hardy-Rix discuss the things to consider with Jim Martin. You'll be surpised what they say.
Aussies Overland Brian Rix has been riding motorcycles since he was young on his father’s farm near Victoria in Australia, mustering sheep during his school holidays on a motorbike. Passionate about travel, he dreamed of travelling around the world on a motorcycle. Lucky for Brian, his wife Shirley Hardy-Rix enjoyed riding pillion and agreed to go along for the ride. So in 2003, Brian, a career policeman and Shirley, who had her own media business, took time off from their normal middle class life and fulfilled their lifelong ambition of motorcycling around the world on a BMW 1150GS. In one year, they traversed 27 countries and rode more than 56,000 kilometres. And then in 2011, Brian and Shirley, both now retired, shipped their 2008 BMW 1200GS Adventure to Santiago, South America and rode from the bottom of South America to the top of North America, then through Western Europe and Southern Africa, visiting 5 countries altogether and covering over 80,000 kilometres. All in 16 months. They have shared their adventures by writing two books, “Two for the Road” and “Circle to Circle”, an inspiration for anyone who wants to experience the world by motorcycle, especially happy couples riding pillion. Join us as we talk to Brian and Shirley, a spirited couple who decided to live life to the fullest and just do the ‘big trip’ they dreamed about. Kirsty Young's castaway on Desert Island Discs this week is Brian Rix. For many years he brought farce to a large and appreciative audience - dropping his trousers thousands of times for the benefit of television viewers and theatre-goers. He was one of the most successful actor-managers that Britain has produced. But, more than 30 years ago, he called a halt to his first career to devote himself to altering legislation and attitudes towards disability. His eldest child, Shelley, was born with Down's syndrome and her birth prompted him towards his extraordinary second career. As a campaigner and fundraiser he has been described as having done more for people with learning disabilities than possibly anyone else in the country.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Love by Nat King Cole Book: Encyclopædia Britannica Luxury: A proper orthopaedic cushion.
