We're kicking off a new month with an interview with our friend Elizabeth Martin! Elizabeth and our host Sarah Schalow met for the first time in the Grand Canyon - you'll hear that story right at the beginning of the conversation. Elizabeth recounted the Lord's faithfulness through stories of the friends God has brought her along the way. Elizabeth first tells us of her friend Abigail in high school who did not give up on getting to know Elizabeth even though she was a little more introverted. Elizabeth and her family had recently moved to Arizona from Iowa and to have someone reach out was meaningful. It was through this relationship that Elizabeth came to know the Lord. The rest of this interview is filled with story after story of God bringing along just the right person at just the right time. From multiple moves to personal struggles, to questions in parenting to teaching during covid, Elizabeth feels that God has been incredibly faithful in providing community for her and her family in each stage of their life. She gives us a lot of encouragement on how to seek out friendships and to ultimately be a good friend to others. She closes with this verse from Philippians 2:4, "Do not merely look out for your own personal interests but also for the interests of others." We were not called to live in isolation but to live in community. Don't miss out on what God could have for you in His people!Connect Groups at DSCC: https://dscchurch.churchcenter.com/registrations/events/1391282Would you please subscribe and leave us a review? For many of my clients, I create and facilitate what's called an Emerging Leaders program. It's designed to prepare emerging leaders for their first management positions. Participants learn and apply foundational leadership skills throughout a multi-phased experiential journey. At the core of the program is the use of internal managers to serve as coaches and mentors. These are seasoned leaders, hand selected by the organization to help coach their assigned participant throughout the entire duration of the program. As a two-part recording, joining me today are Scott Dumler, Josh Key, Brian Fagan, and Elizabeth Martin, who went through my program as participants and are now leading people. You'll get to hear leadership development from a learner's perspective, and what a participant is going through during their leadership development journey, their ‘aha' moments, etc.In the next episode, you'll hear from the coaches who helped shepherd the participants to gain their perspective on mentoring these emerging leaders during the program.KEY TAKEAWAYSAdapt to different styles when communicating. The same conversation with two different people has a dramatic impact if you're not meeting their style and what they're looking to get from the conversationUtilize your peer set and other leaders to gather insight and advice. For the last couple of months, I can't blink without seeing the name Juliette Duncan, so when I saw her as next on my list for interviews, I was excited! And boy was chatting with her a delight. Juliette has TWO books releasing back to back almost, but the first one, Christmas at Goddard Downs releases... TODAY! So, listen in to learn more about her Christmas novella and a bit about the next book in her Waters Edge series. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. What's Better Than a Great Christmas Romance Novella? So Much! How about "mature romance"?  Oh, how I love that rather than "seasoned" as if everything else is somehow bland OR... it's on the verge of "spicy." EEEP! Juliette Duncan, however, has created a wonderful cast of Characters in her Sunburned Land series taking place in northern Australia and on a cattle station, no less. We talked about formulaic romance, the lack of it, and what makes for good, realistic fiction. I wanted to throw out here that when she talks about her books not being "squeaky clean," I believe she's talking about how the people are flawed rather than perfect and they make stupid mistakes like humans do rather than the books being full of things that would get them an R rating as a movie!  I think it's just the Aussie/USA terminology difference--kind of like Merry Christmas vs. Happy Christmas which we ended with. But we also talked about her Water's Edge series!  Book five is coming out in just a few weeks, and it sounds delightful. I'm a sucker for a friends-to-more romance, and well... this is one! YAY! Think small-town romance, hang gliding, and the Australia coast. What more could you want? When I asked about what she likes to read, she admitted she does read in her own genre, and likes women's fiction by Aussie author, Lilly Mirren. I've never heard of Mirren, but since Juliette says she writes a clean book, I'm eager to give it a shot! Furthermore, Juliette Duncan's books can be listened to on audiobooks wherever you like to get yours--including from her WEBSITE. Christmas at Goddard Downs by Juliette Duncan A Christmas celebration, an engagement in doubt… Maggie and Frank are excited to welcome the entire family home for Christmas. It's been too long since they were all together, and since Frank's heart attack, they cherish each moment spent with their family. Plus, there could be two engagement announcements! Janella's bringing Wade to Christmas, and everybody's expecting Sean to finally pop the question to Elizabeth. The whole cattle station's buzzing with anticipation. But Sean still has niggling doubts. Since Uncle Frank appointed him as co-manager of Goddard Downs, his life has changed for the better, and at last he feels like somebody, and yet, he can't shrug off his father's words. Although he loves Elizabeth, how can he expect her to marry him when his dad could be right and he could fall into his old ways at any time? Elizabeth Martin's had enough of waiting for Sean to propose, and Bree's offer to travel the world and nurse wherever the Lord leads holds appeal. But can she leave Sean? The thought distresses her. But does she love him enough to wait forever for him to propose? What if he never does? How can she join his family for Christmas when all eyes will be on them? It'd be easier not to go. She'll pick up another shift, make her excuses. Somebody needs to care for the sick while everyone else celebrates the birth of Jesus. Can this impasse be broken? Can Sean find the courage to face his fears and commit to Elizabeth before he loses her? Will Elizabeth choose to travel the world, or will this Christmas be one that will change her life forever? Join the Goddard family for a Christmas to remember. Christmas at Goddard Downs is Book Six in the Sunburned Land Series, a contemporary Christian romance set in the beautiful, rugged and remote Kimberley area of northern Australia. Twenty years ago, on May 27 of 2002, a bridge collapsed on I-40 in Oklahoma. Elizabeth Martin's parents were on that bridge, and she lost both of them. Elizabeth was 28 at the time, and she and her sister were left to cope with overwhelming grief and loss. In the last twenty years, she has moved, gotten married, and had a child. God has walked with her every step of the way. She has learned a lot of life lessons in her journey, and has many words of wisdom for us. She has chosen to walk with a grateful heart. She talks about grief as a spiral staircase, and compares the Christian life as a tightrope walk. She even went to tightrope-walking school! Elizabeth has an incredible story and an amazing outlook. You will learn a lot from this, and if you've ever gone through a grieving process you will understand where she is coming from. This is a hard story but many nuggets of truth are woven throughout. Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek both started writing their first plays at the age of about seven. Lauren fell in love with the magic of movies visiting her dad (visual effects supervisor Joel Hynek) on the set of Predator as a little kid. Elizabeth spent her tween years writing (badly formatted) fan fiction episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. In high school, we joined forces while working at the same Shakespeare theater in the summers. We continued to work in classical theater together after college, producing plays on shoestring budgets and getting paid out of a passed hat. However, frustrated with the limited roles for women in Shakespeare's work, we started to dream of creating our own stories — ones that featured strong women that our little girl selves could look up to. We let our imaginations run to tales that couldn't be tackled on the stage, they demanded the big screen. After spending a few years teaching ourselves how to write (and properly format) a screenplay, we swung for the fences and wrote a live action Mulan on spec. Disney bought it and it's due out in March of 2020. In the meantime, we've won a handful of writing contests, wrote a Lifetime movie Christmas Perfection, and were hired to adapt a NY Times bestseller into an hour-long drama series for Alcon Entertainment. Currently, we're working on a biopic about computer pioneer GRACE HOPPER for Middleton Media as well as rewriting an action flick for a trio of companies. In our spare time, we strive to make the world a more equal place as co-chairs of the Committee of Women Writers at the WGAW.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/quidditasfactor)

It is directed by Niki Caro, with screenplay by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Lauren Hynek, and Elizabeth Martin. Plans for a live-action remake began in 2010 but the project stalled in development hell. In March 2015, a new attempt was announced and Caro was hired to direct in February 2017. Liu was cast in the title role in November 2017, following a casting call of 1,000 actresses, and the rest of the cast joined over the following year. Filming began in August 2018 and lasted through November, taking place in New Zealand and China. With a production budget of $200 million, it is the most expensive film ever directed by a woman. Mulan's Hollywood premiere was held on March 9, 2020. Originally scheduled to be a wide theatrical release, it was ultimately cancelled in the United States after being delayed multiple times due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Disney instead premiered the film on September 4, 2020, on Disney+ for a premium fee in countries where the service had launched. It will have a traditional theatrical release in countries without Disney+, where theaters have re-opened. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the action sequences, visuals, and performances, but criticized the screenplay. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message

If you’ve ever traveled the tube in London, you’ll hear an automated voice say, “mind the gap” when the door opens, reminding passengers not to fall into the crevice, that space between the train and the platform. Today’s special guest, blogger Elizabeth Martin, from mindingthegaps.life, talks with Vivian about the opportunity she had to take a “gap year” many years after getting married and having a family. In her blog, Elizabeth documents these changes in her life as she strives to fully experience them. We are reminded to be careful where we put our feet, so as to avoid the crevices. You may not know where you’re going, but if you’re fully present, then it can become an adventure and a mindful experience, not just another day you can’t remember after rushing through it. Join Vivian and Elizabeth for tips on how we can more fully value our daily experiences by “minding the gap”.   Today, Vivian and Elizabeth Discuss: The difference between doing and being Family and obligations to our roles as younger women (and younger men) can preclude taking time to be mindful Is this who you want to be, or what you want to do? The transitioning of a role Being open and guided Experiences can become the gifts that you give your family, rather than things The “homeless plan” or home-free plan for a year, became more than that Trying to let go of plans and mastering letting go of the outcomes Setting intentions but not being married to the outcomes The concept of “fallow time” - allowing yourself to just think Learning to sit alone and being comfortable with yourself Practicing things that make us uncomfortable Allowing your adult children to parent their children We go through life and when we reflect, we see it differently What is the practice you’re going to choose? Who sold us Retirement, what the heck is it, and why do I have to buy into it? End of work to end of life - lack of rituals and ceremonies Inspiritus, the Latin word for “breathe”, and its importance for minding the gap Leveling off from management to leadership Letting go of our expectations of how we want our children to turn out Letting go of judgment and accepting people where they are Meditation: meeting your past self and future self Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable Cutting ties to the anchor: are you anchored to the right things? The term “elder” doesn’t mean “old”. The term “elder” means “it’s time to give back”. This week How I Wrote that sat down with a trio of working writers who also work hard for their union. Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek are a writing team responsible for the live action Mulan but they also serve as Co-Chairs of the Committee of Women Writers at the Writers Guild of America, West. They each offer solid advice on the business of screenwriting as well as the craft. Hynek says the benefit of writing as a team is a more cohesive script, “We would fight about a scene and then realize part of the reason we’re fighting about it is it was not supposed to be in the movie.” Alison Schroeder was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Hidden Figures and is currently working on Christopher Robin. Her response to the idea of a writer’s ritual is simple: “I don’t miss deadlines. That’s my ritual.” Martin: “If we’re having trouble with something it’s because we’re not trying it from the right angle so we’ll just try it from another angle.” Lauren Hynek: “Once you get the job it’s only 10% writing. 90% is how you are in the room.” Alison Schroeder: “Pitching is an art form in and of itself and you have to learn how to do it fast, because you’re doing all this for free so you can’t let it consume all your time.”

Ideas for comfortable camp chairs, camp pads, and other ingenious ideas. Yellow Tents: In the January episode of RAW we talked about yellow tents and insects. Listener, Mike Samsen, wrote in with his thoughts: "Someone said NOT to get a yellow tent because it attracts bugs. Being the happy owner of a yellow Redverz, I was distressed by my apparent stupidity (though I’ve never had an issue.) Anyhow, being a recovering management consultant, I had to do a little research. As it turns out, it appears yellow is a good color. According to Sciencing.com, "Insects are attracted to ultraviolet and blue light, including black and florescent." Pest Cemetery.com maintains that "yellow lights or the color yellow actually prevents mosquitoes from biting you. Yellow is a color mosquitoes can hardly see and when they do see the color it confuses them. Consequently yellow clothing may be a wise choice to prevent an evening out from turning itchy."

So, we discuss the use of yellow tents again and set some things straight. Listener Questions:
Advice about Getting Back on the Bike After a Crash:
Geoff Goins asks for input from the RAW panel: I know it has been covered on ARR, and here and there in several other episodes, but I would love some insight from your panel about getting back on after a big crash? The mental barriers and how to deal with the fear. I had a crash last fall that resulted in surgery and a wrecked bike, and I am having doubts about getting back on. I know Sam has had a couple spills, and still gets on and rides. Convincing Someone that Travel Can be Safe:
Huw Gwilliam has done some motorcycle traveling in the USA with his girlfriend, but now wants to go to Central and South America. He wants to know how to convince her that it will be safe and she shouldn't worry about it. And how does he avoid the stress of worrying about her while on the trip? A Question for Sam Manicom:
Mark Plank has a question for Sam Manicom: [He] has mentioned in interviews (Horizons Unlimited DVDs) that his friends at the pub laughed at him when he told them that he wanted to ride a motorcycle around the world. Now with miles and miles of travels and numerous books and appearances, what do these same friends say about Sam?
