Welcome to Unpacked: Five Questions. In this episode host Katherine La Grave speaks with Afar contributor Chris Colin about his first safari — a family trip through Botswana that mixes biking, Land Cruisers, salt pans, and intimate wildlife encounters. Chris describes the sensory moments that changed how he pays attention, the guides who opened the landscape to his family, and small-scale wonders (including an antlion and a very near-miss with a cobra) that stayed with him long after the trip. In this episode you'll learn Why Botswana's slower pace and fewer vehicles make it a different kind of safari How biking through the bush reveals small-scale wildlife moments you won't see from a Land Cruiser Practical travel advice for families and first-time safari-goers (how to slow down, pack flexibly, and read local history) How local guides turn instincts and small signs into unforgettable wildlife sightings Don't miss these moments Opening conversation on why Botswana felt like the right first safari Riding on elephant trails with a bike-supported vehicle nearby The antlion pit: a small, gruesome, unforgettable predator encounter Lying on the salt pans under a vast African sky and hearing lions roar at dusk A near miss with a massive cobra while answering nature's call Meet this episode's guest Chris Colin — Afar contributing writer and the traveler at the center of this episode Take this trip Contributing writer Chris Colin's eight-day Botswana itinerary was put together by Teresa Sullivan, cofounder of Mango African Safaris, who specializes in family travel. The trip featured a Natural Selection cycling safari into the Makgadikgadi Pans and exploring the Okavango Delta. From $2,444 per person, per day. Learn more about your ad choices. Car buying should be exciting, not a minefield of potential fraud and deception. Yet two alarming lawsuits from Florida reveal the dark side of automotive retail, where unsuspecting customers discovered their "new" vehicles had hidden histories. One buyer found his pristine Land Cruiser had nearly 5,000 miles on the odometer despite being sold as factory-fresh, while another learned her Jeep had previously been titled to a leasing company—information deliberately concealed during the sale. These cautionary tales highlight why thoroughly examining documentation before signing is crucial. As one host suggests, having an attorney review purchase papers might seem excessive, but could save thousands in the long run. While the vast majority of dealerships operate honestly, these instances remind us to verify everything independently, especially when significant investments are involved.Meanwhile, Ford Motor Company has established an unfortunate industry record with 89 recalls issued so far this year—more than the next five manufacturers combined. Their latest recall affects 850,000 vehicles with potential fuel pump failures that could cause dangerous engine stalling. Ford claims to be taking a "more proactive approach" to safety issues, but the sheer volume raises questions about underlying quality control. The automotive financing landscape continues to shift toward concerning territory. A record 19% of new vehicle buyers now commit to monthly payments exceeding $1,000, while 22% have stretched loan terms to 84 months or longer. These extended financing arrangements might make monthly payments more manageable but dramatically increase total ownership costs and potential negative equity situations.Electric vehicle adoption faces headwinds as well, with new EV registrations dropping 5.9% in May—the second consecutive monthly decline despite attractive incentives. With the $7,500 federal tax credit set to expire September 30th, potential buyers should consider acting soon if an electric vehicle is in their future plans.Whether you're shopping for your next vehicle or maintaining your current one, staying informed about these industrBe sure to subscribe for more In Wheel Time Car Talk! The Lupe' Tortilla RestaurantsLupe Tortilla in Katy, Texas Gulf Coast Auto ShieldPaint protection, tint, and more!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. At around $35 per night, it's a bargain escape that doesn't require a long journey. The highlight of our episode is our conversation with Harry Fisher from Fire to Fork. Send us a textThe line between determination and recklessness blurs in this captivating episode featuring Brendan Bramford, a hunter whose life story spans continents and carries the weight of generations of hunting tradition. Born in Zimbabwe where his father worked as a professional hunter, Brendan's earliest memories include riding in Land Cruisers on safari before his family fled political violence that claimed their home.Brendan's storytelling prowess shines as he recounts his first black bear harvest in Washington—a tale that begins with him answering nature's call behind camp and spotting what he thought was a burnt stump until it started moving. With his pants literally down, he managed to make the shot of a lifetime, creating a hunting memory equal parts successful and embarrassing. The heart of the episode centers on Brendan's remarkable elk hunt where stubborn determination overcame physical limitations. Just three days before a planned five-day backcountry archery hunt, Brendan severely sliced his forearm open, requiring extensive stitches. Against medical advice and common sense, he proceeded with the hunt, hiking eight miles into the wilderness with an 82-pound pack and his arm freshly bandaged. When the moment came to draw on his first bull elk, the searing pain nearly derailed the opportunity—but Brendan persevered through multiple shots and tracking to harvest his first archery elk.The episode closes with sobering stories of Brendan's family history hunting dangerous game in Africa, including his father being run over by a Cape buffalo and a family friend's recent horrific mauling by a leopard. These tales serve as powerful reminders of nature's raw power and the risks some hunters accept in pursuit of their passion. Are you ready to make your own hunting stories? On this episode, Chris collaborates and co-hosts with Dan Simpson, the host of the Classic Land Cruisers Podcast. When two classic 4x4 enthusiasts get a chance to pick each others brains, the conversation will inevitably end up about Land Cruisers. They talk about their random encounter crossing paths, variations of global market Land Cruisers and get real about the beloved J-Series markets.US Spec Land Cruisers will always be paramount in the market, but supply of imported Land Cruisers has moderated and allowed the market to balance out. Lately, the lower volume of Land Cruisers we are seeing imported into the US tend to be higher quality restorations and desirable variants that we never saw in the US. Those current market trends and the back drop of a strong collector vehicle market are moving the J-Series market back into the sellers favor and prices are rising. What's the deal with diesel tuning? Is it really that different? Yes… But also no.This week Matt Smith of Just Autos joins us to discuss all things diesel tuning — operating principles, combustion temperature, reflash options, and a whole lot more.Use JUST50 to get $50 off HPA's Diesel Tuning Starter Package: https://hpcdmy.co/dieselstarterbJust Autos, based out of Queensland, Australia, specialises in diesel performance tuning — but perhaps not the platforms you're more familiar with. Matt has gone down the Japanese diesel path — specifically Toyota's Hilux, Prado, and Landcruiser platforms. These workhorses are common on Aussie roads, and Matt is at the very forefront of developing their stout Toyota diesel motors to get the absolute best performance from them. In this conversation, Matt tells us how he got into the business, and how it's changed and improved to become the very professional outfit it is today. We then jump into the real meat and potatoes of this episode — a very deep dive into the world of diesel engines and tuning. Matt takes the time to really go through how a diesel engine operates and how that differs from a petrol engine, as well as why we need fuel pulses, the general dos and don'ts of diesel tuning, controlling combustion temperatures, and the usefulness (or not) of exhaust gas temperature sensors in a diesel application. Matt is a great communicator and manages to get tech heavy without leaving the real world, so if you've always wanted to better understand diesel technology and how to get the absolute most performance out of it, this episode is a great place to start.Follow Matt here:IG: @justautosmechanicalFB: Just AutosYT: Just Autos MechanicalTKTK: justautosWWW: justdieselperfomance.com.auDon't forget, you can use JUST50 to get $50 off HPA's Diesel Tuning Starter Package: https://hpcdmy.co/dieselstarterbTimestamps:0:00 The Dos and Don'ts of Diesel Tuning.3:41 How did you become interested in cars?10:57 Are we losing key mechanical skills these days?15:30 What drove you towards the diesel world?22:48 How does a diesel engine work?26:15 Diesel engine timing.29:16 What is pilot injection for in a diesel engine?32:36 Diesel fuelling and tuning.40:12 EGTs on a diesel engine.50:47 Common rail diesel fuel pressure.54:19 Diesel fuel system failures. Jill and Tom open the show covering a few news stories. First, Toyota is claiming it will have a solid-state EV battery in a production vehicle around 2030. Could be big news in regard to EV price and range. Listen in for details. The hosts went on to discuss Mercedes-Benz's new turquoise marker- and tail lights. Why are they doing this? Listen in. Still in the first segment, Jill shared details of a story she wrote about how the similar-size Toyota 4Runner and Land Cruiser crossovers differ. Clue: One is more family friendly than the other. In the second segment, Jill and Tom welcome Sam Fiorani of AutoForecast Solutions to the show. Sam walked the hosts through the headwinds faced by the auto industry as a result of the current administration's tariff plans. Sam also discussed Tesla's plant capacity situation, which may be most acute in Europe, where the company recently opened a new manufacturing facility. In the last segment, Jill is tormented by Tom's “Pontiac or Oldsmobile?” quiz, and the hosts talk a little about Polestar, a new EV brand with Volvo roots.

Are they off-road ready or just rugged? This week the Unnamed Automotive Podcast tackles two rough and tumble SUVs starting with Benjamin's review of the 2025 Subaru Outback XT, especially in light of an upcoming redesign which may ditch the classic wagon styling of the Subaru halo vehicle. While our hosts rag on the Outback's mainstreamification, they also worry that the future will lack the personality and capabilities that made it so interesting and popular in the first place. Then Sami shares his thoughts on the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser, which changes the older FJ formula to something less capable and less luxurious than Americans are used to. Beyond that, Sami points out the difficult to swallow pricing of the new Land Cruiser and how it stacks up against other rugged SUVs. Then the guys talk about the quality and pricing of cars following the COVID Pandemic, and whether consumers can head into a dealership and get a good deal right now. Thanks for listening!

Land Cruiser is one of Toyota's – and, arguably, the world's – most haloed marques. In this episode, Jason and Derek discuss its origins and history from its jeep origins, to its enormous family tree, all the way up to the brand new 250-series models, the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus GX550. Jason and the Hagerty crew traveled to the rugged, mountainous outskirts of Salt Lake City (and the nearby Land Cruiser Heritage Museum) to film an ICONS episode on the illustrious off-roading Toyota. And in this episode, the carmudgeons dive into the origins of the Japanese jeep and its Attila-grade family tree of subsequent series: the 20-series Land Cruiser and then the, 40, 55, 60, 70, 80, 100, 200, 250, and 300, just to name a few! The FJs, BJs, the Iron Pig, heavy duties, station wagons, Prados, the Lexus-badged models like the LX600 and GX550 (Motor 1's SUV of the year!). We'll even cover the Land Cruiser's competition along the way: the Jeep Wrangler, Compass, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Wagoneer; the Land Rover Defender, Range Rover, Velar, Discovery and Evoque; even the Ford Bronco and International Scout. In addition to the WWII Willys Jeep 4x4, we'll cover the origin of the “J” in BJ and FJ – an abbreviation for jeep, which itself many believe is a pseudo-acronym for GP or “general purpose,” but a fact-check says otherwise. Even the Land Cruiser name itself was a tweaked version of the Land Rover moniker to make Rando-kurūzā in Japan. Jason also reviews both of the new 250-series Prado trucks: the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser and 2024 Lexus GX550. We'll talk powertrain, styling, cargo and passenger capacity, comfort, handling, NVH, luxury, and more. Now let's get to it! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
