IN THIS EPISODE OF THE HUMAN UPGRADE™...I do something different. Over the past 1000+ episodes, I have spent a lot of time talking and learning from my guests, but I have heard over and over that you would like to hear more from me about what I am doing, trying and thinking. Well, that can be awkward to do sitting alone in front of a microphone. A while ago, Danica Patrick interviewed me and it is one of my favorite podcast interviews ever. Danica did a great job of digging into why I do what I do, why I think the way I think, and best of all she allowed me to talk about parts of my life that I have never talked about anywhere else. So, Danica has kindly allowed me to drop that episode from her podcast, Pretty Intense, right here on the Human Upgrade. You are going to learn a lot from the episode. We hit on a lot of pretty next-level stuff - our conversation even allowed me to dig into the concept of old souls (or reincarnation), and how that affects our current life.Danica is a fascinating person and an excellent interviewer. #MeTooSTEM, a Twitter movement created by Dr. BethAnn McLaughlin, was an internet gathering place for all the STEM women online to congregate and support one another. BethAnn's right-hand woman, known only by her Twitter handle, @Sciencing_bi, was always there to retweet and support BethAnn's latest project. But when COVID hit in March of 2020, Sciencing_bi blamed her getting it on her employer, Arizona State University. And when Sciencing_bi died of COVID complications, the mourning #MeTooSTEM community made the mistake of looking into their friend's life. www.patreon.com/hookedthepod SOURCES: https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2019/07/metoostem-founder-out-vanderbilt https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/04/style/college-coronavirus-hoax.html https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2019/05/turmoil-metoostem https://www.media.mit.edu/posts/announcing-the-winners-of-the-2018-mit-media-lab-disobedience-award/ https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/peteraldhous/metoostem-sexual-harassment-science https://heavy.com/news/2020/08/sciencing_bi-bethann-mclaughlin-asu/

The more time I spend working with women with their PCOS, the more and more it becomes apparent that regardless of your medical knowledge you can still struggle and not have all the answers. In this episode, I’m combining my knowledge with physician and past PCOS Protocol patient (and a current member of our Lifer’s group), Dr Stephanie and we’re absolutely sciencing the shit out of PCOS.Stephanie is an absolute powerhouse - she’s a family and primary care physician as well as being a teacher to young doctors and medical students AND spends time helping in ICU and with in-clinic minor surgeries. She’s got more than 10 years of practical medical experience and yet she continued to struggle with those PCOS symptoms we all know too well. You’d think with the crazy amount of medical experience she has that she’d have all the answers but there were still things going on in her body that she just couldn’t get to the root of and in addition she had some additional chronic health issues that just compounded those awful symptoms. Luckily, with both her and my combined knowledge in our areas of expertise, we were able to tease out the real drivers of her symptoms and help her start to get on top of her symptoms.Working with Stephanie has been such an amazing experience because it really gives insight into PCOS from a doctor’s perspective, opens us both up more to discourse around how PCOS is treated and why it’s not just a matter of seeing one doctor or practitioner to help resolve your symptoms and how to navigate addressing your PCOS.Get ready, because we absolutely science the shiiiiiit out of PCOS in this episode - we talk all about her journey with PCOS, her medical school experience, her other conditions, her thoughts on the medical treatment of PCOS versus the lifestyle treatments, who to see for what issues and her advice for talking to doctors when it comes to PCOS management. This episode is for you if:You’re a medical practitioner of some variety but you’re still not able to figure out how to tackle your PCOSYou feel like your doctor isn’t providing you with the help you needYou’ve been told you need to lose weight You have insulin resistanceYou’re taking or have been suggested to take MetforminYou’re bloods come back fine but you know you’re not fineSome things we cover in this episode:What someone should do if their doctor isn’t helping them with their PCOSWhy one practitioner won’t be able to give you all of the answersPostural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)Dealing with giving your patients advice as a family physician when you’re still struggling with symptoms yourselfLinks to our programs:The PCOS ProtocolEggducatedRelevant Episodes:Season 1 Episode 1: Getting to the root of your PCOSSeason 1 Episode 2: How a doctor treats her own PCOS: Interview with Dr DanahSeason 1 Episode 4: Overcoming Binge Eating Disorder and PCOSSeason 6 Episode 7: How a nurse treats her PCOS and what she wants you to know

In Episode 35, I argue that the Coronavirus is an Alien attempt to re-write your DNA so that they can use you to hack God. I know. I am deep in the rabbit hole in this episode, but hear me out. Viruses are not members of any life-kingdom on earth. They are not plant, animal, insect, fungi, or bacteria. Because they need a living host, they are anti-life (anti-Christ). The Coronavirus is a RNA (retrovirus) virus. Unlike DNA viruses like the cold or flu, RNA viruses re-write your DNA as it replicates itself. Why would an Alien use a virus to re-write your DNA? Why does a hacker corrupt your computer to hack your company's server? If you accept this reality as a simulation and that we are part of a universal consciousness, aliens have every reason to corrupt you in order to hack God.Think I have lost my mind yet? It’s a special Thursday night episode of Out d’Coup. Kevin’s heading to Philly tomorrow and Sean is heading back home...so here we are. Thursday night with Fresh King Cake and Sunny Side Up. On today’s show, The Guardian published a bombshell investigative story this week. They reported that Governor Tom Wolf’s office and DEP officials halted environmental studies during the permitting process for Energy Transfer Partners Mariner East - 2 Pipeline in order to fast track the pipeline’s construction. Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro and Senate Democrats renew their push for abuse survivors in the wake of the Catholic Church’s grand jury report.   It’s spring in PA. That means it’s budget cutting time at Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. Kutztown University president Kenneth Hawkinson sends email to faculty and staff waving the flags of austerity as we head into the final weeks of classes. And we hear a new student fee is on the horizon. Oh, joy! What will be the response from faculty, staff, and students? We shall see. Awesome space news this week...For the first time, SpaceX lands all three boosters after a successful satellite launch, we got the first-ever image of a black hole, this week was the 35th Space Symposium, and investment in space companies hit an all-time high of $3 billion. But, we’ll get to most of that maybe next week. Cool beer release at Free Will. It’s Vulgar Display of Fruit. An “Imperial Sour Ale brewed with an obscene amount of apricot and black currant purées, and finished with a touch of vanilla.” Sean treks home for his brother’s housewarming. Sciencing in Philly.

In this episode I talk to Evan Miyazono about tackling metaresearch questions, how novel physical phenomena go from "oh that's cool" to devices that harness cutting edge physics, and how we could better incentivize the creators of innovations where traditionally it's hard to capture value, like open-source software and early-stage research. Evan is a research scientist at Protocol Labs where he helps lead their research efforts - coordinating researchers both inside and outside the company. Protocol labs is best known for Filecoin: a blockchain application for distributed storage. At the same time they also have a much larger mission that we get into in the podcast. Before joining Protocol Labs, Evan did his PhD at Caltech where he worked on turning crazy physics into practical devices for cryptography. Key Takeaways There might be ways to demystify both intuition and "big H Hard" research research in order to improve our systems for breakthrough discoveries. It's still super speculative but worth thinking about. Observations about physical phenomena and the world are at the core of many innovations, but the most of the process is driven from the top down by the problem, rather than bottom-up by the solution. On top of that, the process of solving the problem can actually feed back and increase our understanding of the underlying phenomena. Finally, there might also be new legal structures we could put in place to encourage more open-source development and fundamental research by allowing people to access more of the value they create in those activities. Resources Protocol Labs Evan on Twitter A quick talk on Protocol Labs research Metascience Cloud Seeding - From the abstract: "The intent of glaciogenic seeding of orographic clouds is to introduce aerosol into a cloud to alter the natural development of cloud particles and enhance wintertime precipitation in a targeted region. ... Despite numerous experiments spanning several decades, no direct observations of this process exist." SourceCred - a tool to help open source contributors capture the value of their contributions. Ideas for comfortable camp chairs, camp pads, and other ingenious ideas. Yellow Tents: In the January episode of RAW we talked about yellow tents and insects. Listener, Mike Samsen, wrote in with his thoughts: "Someone said NOT to get a yellow tent because it attracts bugs. Being the happy owner of a yellow Redverz, I was distressed by my apparent stupidity (though I’ve never had an issue.) Anyhow, being a recovering management consultant, I had to do a little research. As it turns out, it appears yellow is a good color. According to Sciencing.com, "Insects are attracted to ultraviolet and blue light, including black and florescent." Pest Cemetery.com maintains that "yellow lights or the color yellow actually prevents mosquitoes from biting you. Yellow is a color mosquitoes can hardly see and when they do see the color it confuses them. Consequently yellow clothing may be a wise choice to prevent an evening out from turning itchy."

So, we discuss the use of yellow tents again and set some things straight. Listener Questions:
Advice about Getting Back on the Bike After a Crash:
Geoff Goins asks for input from the RAW panel: I know it has been covered on ARR, and here and there in several other episodes, but I would love some insight from your panel about getting back on after a big crash? The mental barriers and how to deal with the fear. I had a crash last fall that resulted in surgery and a wrecked bike, and I am having doubts about getting back on. I know Sam has had a couple spills, and still gets on and rides. Convincing Someone that Travel Can be Safe:
Huw Gwilliam has done some motorcycle traveling in the USA with his girlfriend, but now wants to go to Central and South America. He wants to know how to convince her that it will be safe and she shouldn't worry about it. And how does he avoid the stress of worrying about her while on the trip? A Question for Sam Manicom:
Mark Plank has a question for Sam Manicom: [He] has mentioned in interviews (Horizons Unlimited DVDs) that his friends at the pub laughed at him when he told them that he wanted to ride a motorcycle around the world. Now with miles and miles of travels and numerous books and appearances, what do these same friends say about Sam? “Mr. Statham, would you consider giving San Francisco to Hawaii?” —Former Calif. Assemblyman Bill Morrow (Oceanside-R) About: If President Kennedy’s moon-shot set the tone that no challenge was too difficult, Donald Trump’s presidential victory reminds us that anything is possible, even creating a new U.S. state. In Northern California, like the proper north, there’s been a generation of folks who believe the time for 51 is now. And given the state of the current political landscape, now may be their best shot. Far from the reach of Sacramento, they’re living off the dream of a failed 1941 movement to split from the Golden State and live out their ideals in the name of the late president Thomas Jefferson. The first part of this two-part story welcomes you to the State of Jefferson. It’s an episode that dives into some of the history, the people, and most importantly, the reasons why thousands of ranchers, farmers and folks from Northern California passionately want nothing more than to leave. Meta Treks: A Star Trek Philosophy Podcast

Vulcan Katras and the Mind-Body Problem.   Episode 6 of Star Trek: Discovery, "Lethe," explored and expanded upon the metaphysics of Vulcan katras beyond what had been seen in previous iterations of Star Trek. But what exactly is a Vulcan katra and what properties does it have? From transferring consciousness from one Vulcan to another, to enabling a form of disembodied immortality, katras play an important role in Vulcan mysticism and metaphysics.   In this episode of Meta Treks, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Mike Morrison give a philosophical analysis of the metaphysics of Vulcan katras in relation to the mind-body problem. Is the katra a type of nonphysical substance, as Cartesian dualism would hold? Is the katra a biophysical or emergent property of the brain and its functioning? And is transferring one's katra, through a mind meld or otherwise, an actual transfer of consciousness to a new location, or is it more like backing up a copy of your hard drive to the cloud?   Chapters  Intro (00:01:20)  "Lethe" and Sciencing the Katra in Discovery (00:04:29)  Naturalizing the Katra and Alternative Theories (00:10:59)  Examples of Katric Transfers in Star Trek (00:15:52)  Are Katras Necessarily Dualist?
