Stormy Waters is back with us this week for a follow-up to last week's discussion that goes in a bit of a different direction than the economic outlook chat from that episode. Stormy gets into where knowledge comes from, why females have a more accurate intuition than males, and which part of society and culture is able to see what is being revealed in this current age. This is a fascinating discussion, and I think it'll make you think. CAUTION: Some curse words are used. To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/1085/29 You can't invest in anything without first making a decision. And some of those decisions are bigger than others! Should you invest using an IRA or 401k? Or is there a way to have the best of both worlds? Mark Biller with Sound Mind Investing joins Rob West today to help you sort out your investing options. Mark is the executive editor atSound Mind Investing. 401Ks and IRA are similar in many respects, and both offer significant tax advantages. But before you choose the best investment vehicle, make sure you're ready to invest. ●Before investing, make sure you have adequate savings and little to no debt apart from a mortgage and, possibly, school loans. ●Next, determine how much you need to invest each month to reach your retirement-funding goal. TheFidelity Retirement Score calculatoris a terrific free resource to help you make that determination. If both of those boxes are checked, you're ready to choose between a 401K and an IRA. 401K EMPLOYER MATCHES The first thing to consider is whether your employer matches a portion of what you would contribute to a 401k. If so, terrific! That match is the easiest money you'll ever make. If a match is available, contribute the full amount eligible for the match. Caution: Some 401k plans have vesting rules that restrict access to the matching money until you've worked at the company for a certain number of years. So find out if your 401k plan has a vesting requirement. At this point, your decision largely comes down to how you intend to invest this money and if the options in your 401k plan are aligned with your needs. If your 401k plan is well aligned, great! But if you would like options not offered in that plan, then you'll want to consider an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). IRA CONSIDERATIONS You will need to look into the eligibility requirements for IRAs, but if you're a married couple with earnings of less than $100k per year, you'll be eligible for fully deductible contributions to an IRA. ROTH IRAs The contribution rules for Roth IRAs are different. With a Roth IRA, there's no immediate tax benefit, so the rules are looser. A married couple's income has to be below $198,000 to make a full contribution to a Roth IRA. But again, please look into the rules and eligibility requirements before making a decision. If you're eligible for an IRA, Sound Mind Investing typically suggests investing in an IRA once you reach the matching limit in your 401k because of that greater flexibility in terms of investment choices. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS One potential downside to IRAs is that you may not be able to contribute as much as you'd like. The IRA contribution limit is only $6,000, with an additional $1,000 catch-up amount allowed for anyone age 50 or older. However, if you're married, you can effectively double these amounts by opening IRAs for both you and your spouse. If you've maxed out your employer 401k match AND maxed out IRA contributions, you Can then turn back to your workplace 401k plan, which has much more generous contribution limits. Both 401ks and IRAs offer tremendous tax benefits, but they come with significant restrictions in terms of your access to that money. Making an early withdrawal from a retirement account can be costly. So you don't want to put money into one unless you expect to leave it there until retirement. There are, however, some specific exceptions to these rules. LISTENER QUESTIONS On today's program, Rob also answers these listener questions: ●What kind of life insurance policy is right for you? ●Where can you find information on companies you can invest in that are aligned with Christian values? ●Should you prioritize paying off debt sooner or investing more? I think of the act of submission to our spouses as needing a "super" strength to pull it off. Your "super" power is your anchor to Christ not your willpower. Unfortunately, your strength and powers will weaken if you compromise your relationship with God; He has to be the unmovable tool by which this hinges on.Why we submit to our spouse, boss, parents, etc is not a waste. ECHO CHAMBER? SOUNDING BOARD? BRAIN STORM? MASTERMIND? It's pretty amazing how many people express loud, brash, passionate even vehement opinions which they have never really pondered to the full extent. They have never asked the simple questions like, “How did I come to that conclusion?” “Do I believe this because I have evidence or experience to verify this notion?” “Do I believe and repeat this because someone I admire or respect says it frequently?” “If this idea or opinion is valid and true, what else must also be true?” “If all those things are true, what changes are needed or are imminent in my life? If you have not taken time to ask yourself these questions, you may have strong opinions, but you don't know why. You are at risk of living in an echo chamber. It is neither a safe place to be nor a wise place to be. You need to get a mentor, join a mastermind, brainstorm with people you disagree with, or at minimum seek out a sounding board who is bold enough and intellectual enough to challenge your ideas. Make sure any of the people pass the minimum requirements of: 1. They GENUINELY care about you and your best interest. 2. They are committed to your growth MORE than winning you over or winning an argument, CAUTION: Some people “offer themselves” in these capacities ONLY TO PROVE you wrong and how smart they are. Depending on the purpose of your conversation, the nature of your ideas, and the affinity to relationship, some of these mentors could be engaged at NO COST TO YOU . Others will be trained, certified professionals and perhaps industry specific mentors who charge for their time and insights. — HERE'S HOW YOU CAN KNOW -- — IF EVERY VOICE, OPINION & IDEA YOU HEAR SOUNDS LIKE YOURS - ITS AN ECHO CHAMBER — IF YOU ARE GETTING YOUR VOICE HEARD AND SOME PEOPLE SHARE YOUR IDEAS AND SOME REJECT THEM - ITS A SOUNDING BOARD — IF YOU HAVE IDEAS WHICH ARE STILL BEING DEVELOPED AND NEED TO BE GROWN AND STRETCHED AND CHALLENGED - ITS A BRAIN STORM — IF YOU ARE SHARING YOUR IDEAS, HEARING IDEAS OF OTHERS, DEVELOPING NOTIONS YOU HAVE NEVER CONSIDERED, LEARNING NEW WAYS TO THINK - ITS A MASTERMIND Watch the video #leadingleaderspodcast 4-3-20. Is this just a fad? Does it impact the taste/flavor of the wine?A: Apparently this wine in can trend has been on the rise over the last few years -- and it is one to stay. There are multiple reasons why you are beginning to see wine in cans: portability, sustainability in production/shipping, light-weight container, recyclable, beach-friendly or for on-the-go activity.Canned WIne Comes of Age www.winespectator.com/articles/canne…e-comes-of-age The Lowdown on Wine in a Can winefolly.com/update/the-lowdown-on-wine-in-a-can/How good is canned wine? www.decanter.com/decanter-best/canned-wine-405876/ Suggested Wines to Try www.delish.com/food-news/g252282…est-canned-wines/Caution: Some of these canned wines do have residual sugars, which will make them taste fruitier and some have a tingly finish, similar to a carbonated drink.

Being a burn survivor has many challenges: many people see the physical scars, however, there are also mental and emotional scars, which can be even more difficult to accept. Shawn Simmons was an inner-city youth from Newark, New Jersey who, despite violence, drugs and bad influences in his neighborhood, used education as a tool to get out of those conditions.     As a first-generation college student, Shawn attended Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ in the fall of 1999 on a full-ride scholarship.    It would be the morning of January 19, 2000 whilst Shawn and roommate Alvaro Llanos slept, that a drunken fraternity prank gone wrong would change their lives and futures forever.     When two fraternity college students set fire to a banner on a bulletin board and slipped away without pulling any alarms or alerting residents, no one could have foreseen the devastation this one act would result in. Three students perished and 58 others were injured due to their actions; Shawn and Alvaro were amongst the most severely burned and injured, almost losing their lives.    Today, Shawn and Alvaro travel the country speaking to college and high school students about the most difficult time of their lives and the importance of fire safety and prevention, both, on and off campus. Their story is one of overcoming adversity — becoming comfortable in their burned skin — and how their bond with each other helped them get their lives back. It's also a journey of forgiveness towards the individuals convicted of starting the fire.     “I always tell people that...a burn survivor or any survivor of any type of accident or any type of illness is still a human being.” — Shawn Simmons  “I always tell people, if you see a burn survivor — if you're curious to know what happened to that person — ask them their story, they'll most likely open up.” - Shawn Simmons  “Our scars are our story, so if you want to know my story and you see my scars, just ask me.” - Shawn Simmons  “... the question comes — if you could have changed the direction in which you went to avoid the fire would you have done it and I always answer...absolutely not. I always feel if we didn't go that way, if we would have made the left instead of made the right, I wouldn't be here to share this journey right now and I survived for a reason.” - Shawn Simmons  “You can never know what your adversity is going to be, but it's how you persevere through your adversity.” - Shawn Simmons  “I survived because the fire inside me burned brighter than the fire around me.” - Shawn Simmons  Today on The Adverse Effect:  Shawn talks about his journey out of the inner city and adjusting to the diversity of college campus life.     Listen as Shawn retells the harrowing events on the night of the fire.   Hear about some of the difficulties people encounter in supporting a burn survivor.  Discover some of the positives that resulted from Shawn's tragedy.  Shawn shares his unexpected journey into becoming an inspiring national speaker and advocate for fire safety.  We leave with a surprise guest.     The Homework: Take less than 30 minutes today to change your perspective:  5 minutes: Watch a clip from the movie “After the Fire”, which covered the incident. (Caution: Some scenes might be too realistic for younger children  5 more minutes: Review the Healthy Children website on burn safety. Make one change to make your home a safer place.   5 more minutes: Take a quiz on burn safety and treatment. Episode 33 The Search for the Kansas College Rapist One person is responsible for at least 15 attacks which resulted in over a dozen brutal rapes since 2000 in two Kansas college towns. After almost ten years, police decided the rapist must have "moved on" or gotten sick but they were wrong. The assailant turned up again in 2015, just as desperate to attack but now he knows the police have his DNA, so what's a rapist to do in this day and age with tools like the MVAC and high definition real-time surveillance cameras? Apparently, for the time being, his pattern is changing. Is he cognizant of the high probability that it's only a matter of time before police come knocking, just as they did for other violent pervs who never thought they'd get caught?  Police are not relying on forensics. They have created a website to appeal to the community, on which they have placed an entire timeline of the events and even an offender profile. We hope they don't stop there. If you have information to share with authorities about this fool, please visit their website http://www.kansascollegerapist.com/ or call Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers at 785-539-7777 or toll free at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) If you have been a victim of sexual violence in any way, and need support, contact the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800 656-4673. Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist Joel Pett has long had our environment, sustainability and overpopulation on his mind.  His cartoons have graced USA Today, the Washington Post, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, the Boston Globe and his hometown Lexington Herald-Leader for over three decades. Frequently lampooning denial and other irrational human behavior disrespecting our critical, life-supporting ecosystems, Joel’s deep connection with the natural world inspires him to use his creativity for good! Pett is also the winner of the 1999 Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for cartooning, and a 1995 winner of the Global Media Award for cartoons on population issues. In this charming conversation, Joel shares stories about some of his favorite cartoons and reacts to Overpopulation Podcast host Dave Gardner’s analysis. EDUCATORS’ EDEN - Teaching the Overachiever!

This episode is part of our EDUCATORS’ EDEN™ series wherein we explore the paradise that the most passionate, creative and committed educators create for themselves, their students, peers, administrations and institutions! This specific episode is, “Teaching the Overachiever!” - Overachievers have their own internal standards and expectations for what is “good enough.” Sharing data with them regarding collective class performance will help assure the overachiever that they are performing “well enough.” They often do not understand how atypical their individual expectations are (relative to the average student performance) and are often worried that everyone else is “doing better” than they are. Any anonymous class data that helps them better understand the real life performance of their peers will be helpful for them. -They will usually self-identify (detailed questions, requests for clarification, sit at front of classroom, reach out prior to the start of class start with questions and concerns, etc.). -Educators must calibrate their interaction to ensure that they are “challenged” and are not bored. Supplemental content, are additional interaction are methods to keep them engaged. -They are fastidious regarding requirements and grading feedback. Educators must provide high quality and quantity feedback.  -CAUTION: Some overachievers may be unrealistic regarding “perfection” and/ or may be self-critical. They need support and guidance helping them place activities in context (e.g., grades do not define you, have fun, etc.).  The overachiever may pose novel questions that enrich the educator skill set. Embrace your overachievers! Ensure that you are explicit, transparent, consistent and customized with all of your content, communication and interaction with this set of scholars!
