Wouldn't you like to get away, Slackers? This week combines my love of music and my love of 70's & 80's sitcoms - my top ten favorite sitcom theme songs! From Three's Company to Cheers, the theme songs were often as iconic as the shows themselves. In most cases, you really did get a feel for what the show was about just by the music that was chosen to accompany the opening credits. Sure, there was at least one "theme doctor" with multiple songs on the list, but even that was part of the appeal - remember TGIF?Hopefully, some of these tunes will warm your heart and bring you back to a "simpler" time - with fond memories of gathering around the television to enjoy some family friendly fare.

I am very excited to share the second of a two-part conversation with author and TV/film historian, Lee Gambin. His double-volume work, "Tonight, On a Very Special Episode: When TV Sitcoms Sometimes Got Serious," provides a launch pad for our thoughtful and fast-paced discussion of the issues and activists behind TV's “very special episodes,” which date back 50 years or more.   These TV events—featuring familiar, beloved characters—mixed serious topics with comedy so effectively that, in many cases, activists were born, movements were started, legislation was passed, and minds were changed.   Legendary showrunners like Norman Lear and Linda Bloodworth-Thomason used the sitcom format to normalize awareness and discussion of race relations, women's issues, representation, discrimination, divorce, alcoholism and drug addiction, sexual assault, HIV/AIDS, and LGBTQ rights.   Fronting these issues shaped our culture in ways that should not be lost to history. Join us for a discussion of the iconic episodes and the legends who made them happen, as well as how they continue to impact us today.   CONNECT WITH LEE GAMBIN   Tonight, On A Very Special Episode: When TV Sitcoms Sometimes Got Serious Volume 1: 1957-1985   Tonight, On A Very Special Episode: When TV Sitcoms Sometimes Got Serious Volume 2: 1986-1998   Cinemaniacs   SOUND CLIPS   Diff'rent Strokes: The Bicycle Man (S5.E16-17)   Designing Women: Killing All the Right People (S2.E4)   All in The Family: Edith's 50th Birthday (S8.E4-5)   BOOKS / ARTICLES   Norman Lear Memoir - Even This I Get to Experience   PERTINENT EPISODES OF ADVANCED TV HERSTORY   Designing Women 1, Body-shaming 0   Sports Night: More Relevant Than Ever   Eating Disorder Movies: TV For and About Women   ATVH NEWSLETTER Sign up at https://cynthiabemisabrams.com/   CONNECT WITH CYNTHIA BEMIS ABRAMS and ADVANCED TV HERSTORY Website:  https://cynthiabemisabrams.com/ Podcasts:  https://cynthiabemisabrams.com/advanced-tv-herstory Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/advancedtvherstory/ Twitter:  https://twitter.com/tvherstory Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/Media.Cynthia YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/@advancedtvherstory/featured   PRODUCTION Music:  Jahzzar - https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Jahzzar/

What'chu talkin' 'bout, Slackers?!Some of my earliest memories of prime time TV are of the good old American sitcom. But there were some classic sitcoms that had long enough runs to cross over the decade line - from the 70s into the 80s.All in the Family. The Jeffersons. Three's Company. Diff'rent Strokes. And so many more. Happy Days first hit the air the year was I was born, yet Richie and Fonzie were also a big part of my adolescence. Many of these shows had long, long runs. Was it because they were really that good or just because there was less competition at the time? I think it was a litle of both since the very best of them hold up even today. Not to mention the number of future A listers (in front of and behind the camera) that got their first taste of fame being cast in one of these shows - George Clooney, anyone? If I can pull it off, I am going to try and bring back the phrase, "Kiss my grits"!Subscribe today!

If Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer doesn't shine bright enough for you and It's A Wonderful Life isn't so wonderful, maybe you just need an alternate way to get into the holiday season. This week we dive off the Nakotomi Plaza right into unconventional Christmas movies.    What makes a Christmas movie a Christmas movie? Everyone likes to Enjoy Stuff around the holidays. But taste is a broad spectrum. While some enjoy wall-to-wall Christmas plot, others find the fun in movies that may have just a pinch of gingerbread sprinkled in.  News -We've got the Breakin' action figures you've been waiting for since 1984! -The Facts of Life and Diff'rent Strokes are getting the “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” treatment on December 7 What we're Enjoying The Beatles are on the minds of Jay and Shua. Shua broke out some of his old Beatles vinyl albums and has really enjoyed the nostalgic feel of the limitations of albums. It's been very therapeutic. Jay indulged in the hours long epic Peter Jackson Beatles documentary, Get Back on Disney+. If you're a Beatles fan, it is worth checking out.   Enjoy Movies For the last few years people have been debating whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie. So the TechnoRetro Dads break it down once and for all.    We look at a plethora of films that have some kind of connection to the holidays. Whether they take place around Christmas or they just have a scene where Mel Gibson beats someone up with a Christmas tree, we look at some unconventional films that fit many people's holiday tradition bill.    Do you Enjoy any of the films on our list? Did we miss some? Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to podcast@enjoystuff.com

Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Diff'rent Strokes To Move The World: An Unofficial Diff'rent Strokes Podcast. Today, I covered S1E14: The Tutor, which aired on February 9, 1979. In this episode Willis is doing poorly in school, so Mr. Drummond hires a tutor. However, he is not pleased by his unconventional methods of teaching. I remember when I first watched this episode back in 2019. I myself was unsure of Danny the boys' tutor at first with his teaching methods and was originally siding with Mr. Drummond who thought Danny wasn't being effective with his tutoring sessions, but turns out that that is just Danny's way of teaching and also how Danny makes the discovery or Willi's learning or memory break when he can't recall anything from 1975. I really got angry with Mr. Drummond upon learning Danny's discovery about Willis, he just waves it off like it's un important, like "oh the teachers would have caught on to it, that's their job" Danny tells him and when would the teacher have the time to deal with Willis's learning problem, they have over 30 kids in class and are too busy breaking up fights, confiscating weapons and drugs to notice. Join me next month when I cover S2E1 and S2E2: Arnold's Girlfriend Parts 1 & 2, which aired on September 21, 1979. In PART 1 Arnold must have an appendectomy. Fred Tanner wants his daughter Alice put in a bedroom away from Arnold. When the two learn of this, they run away. In PART 2 Arnold's life is put on the line when the kids find out they cannot share a hospital room and end up running away on the night before Arnold's surgery. Have a great week everyone and please continue to be safe and use precautions.

Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Diff'rent Strokes To Move The World: An Unofficial Diff'rent Strokes Podcast. Today, I covered S1E6: Goodbye Dolly, which aired on December 8, 1978. In this episode after Kimberly donates Arnold's ratty old doll named Homer to charity and it is sold, he can't sleep. Mr. Drummond quickly tires of this, so he hires a detective to try and find the doll. I thought was a cute episode and I got some serious Punky Brewster Season 1 vibes from the comparison of Arnold losing his doll Homer (it's actual a Paddington Bear) and Punky losing her doll in the Bye Bye My episode, where Punky was grieving her of not just her doll but another connection being severed between her old life with her Mom and moving forward with her new life with Henry she learns to accept a new doll she names Henrietta after, you guessed it, Henry. I felt this episode kinda short changed us, Arnold had not been sleeping for days since he usually sleep with his doll and also was keeping the family up, Phillip explains to Arnold that he needs to move on after his loss, I mean he tried to find the doll even spent $200 on a detective and still he couldn't find it. I wish we could have got character growth from Arnold in this episode as we did with Punky where she accepted the loss with a heavy heart and took the steps to move on. Now that I think about it, she and Arnold are the same age in the Season 1 of their shows, but both handled a similar situation differently. I guess to each their own. I like how Willis apologized to Arnold and told him he would never hurt him intentionally, even though he was the one to give the bear to Kimberly who sold it in the charity auction for a measly 15 cents, all though the guy talked them down to 10 cents. I gotta ask, what man what's a used, worn old doll or Paddington Bear? Thinking back on this episode now, I'm getting uncomfortable Bicycle Man vibes. We never seen the man in question get the bear, so who really knows. Join me next week when I cover S1E7: The Trial, which aired on December 15, 1978. In this episode after reading a book on the American legal system, Willis demands a fair trial for Arnold after he is accused of putting his goldfish in the hot tub. Have a great week everyone! Kay Madati was born to a single, Tanzanian mother who died when he was 12. Kay and his brother were then adopted by a very affluent caucasian couple who lived on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. His new family situation was an uncanny mirror to the plot of Diff’rent Strokes, one of the most popular American TV shows of the early 1980s.   In a very short period of time, Kay went from a world where “black kids were never supposed to be anything but working class” to attending Riverdale Country School, an elite and nurturing private school in which teachers opened his eyes to his own massive potential. His experience, while rooted in tragedy, is a testimony to the transformative power of adoption and how parenting, education, and access are undeniable sources of privilege.    Kay eventually graduated from Georgetown University and went on to a career in media, working for some of the world’s most prestigious corporations, including BMW, CNN, Facebook, and BET Networks where he was Chief Digital Officer. Most recently, Kay was the Global Vice President and Head of Content Partnerships at Twitter, overseeing the company’s worldwide efforts to engage with media and content publishers across TV, Sports, News, Film, Music, among other categories.  Kay is a citizen of both the United States and Tanzania. In 2014, President Obama appointed him to the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability for Young Americans. Today he serves on the Advisory Board of Harvard Univeristy’s Hutchins Center for African and African-American Research, and is a member of the board of directors of Wingstop, a quickly-growing restaurant and franchise concept.    Outside of work, Kay is a passionate advocate for youth in underserved communities. Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Diff'rent Strokes To Move The World: An Unofficial Diff'rent Strokes Podcast. Today, I covered S1E5: The Spanking, which aired on December 1, 1978. In this episode Arnold is caught throwing water bombs off the balcony and Mr. Drummond feels that a fitting punishment is a spanking. I really enjoyed this episode as it covered a topic that really isn't mentioned anymore on television, almost to the point of becoming a taboo subject and that is the physical form of child discipline known as spanking. It was more common to hear or see this form of discipline on tv shows back in the day in the 70's and 80's. The only time other than this show that I've see a child being spanked by their parent was the show Roseanne. In Season 6, their at the time youngest child DJ steals the family car and gets caught by the police, Roseanne's anger boils over and she lashes out at DJ by spanking him. Jackie tells Roseanne she was out of control and acting just like their father, which hits Roseanne hard. I covered an episode of Silver Spoons, Season 2, titled Spare The Rod, which dealt with child abuse as the main focus, but leading up to that has Ricky's father Edward ready to tan his son's hide after Ricky breaks a valuable gift that Edward had just bought Kate. Join me next month for a lighter episode in S1E6: Goodbye, Dolly, which aired on December 8, 1978. In this episode after Kimberly donates Arnold's ratty old doll named Homer to charity and it is sold, he can't sleep. Mr. Drummond quickly tires of this, so he hires a detective to try and find the doll. Have a Great July Everyone!

**Listener discretion advised** Today's episode examines the representation of  Black culture in our media; then and now. One way we can support the black community is by recognizing the messages that we were witness to in our youth. What were shows and movies like Fresh Prince,  Diff'rent Strokes or Do the Right Thing telling the youth about equality, or rather, the lack of it? What is available to us today to help learn more about a message that has become lost or ignored? Please check out our website for links to items discussed in today's episode to learn more:

Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Tea Time With Mr. Belvedere: A Mr. Belvedere Podcast. Today, I decided to cover S2E17: The Will, which aired on February 7, 1986. In this episode Mr. Belvedere refuses guardianship of the kids, even though George & Marsha asked him to take them, in case something happens to them. I really enjoyed this episode. It's kind of interesting how if you flip this scenerio you get the plot to Diff'rent Strokes with the house keeper leaving her children in the care of the employer, or how if you take out the housekeeper and the parents, you'll basically have Party Of Five. I hope you enjoy this episode and have a great weekend everyone. and as always Stay Safe, Stay Healthy, Stay Strong, Stay Positive! We WILL Get Through This!

Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Diff'rent Strokes To Move The World: A Diff'rent Strokes Podcast. Today, I covered S1E3: Mother's Last Visit, which aired on November 17, 1978. In this episode Mr. Drummond's mother arrives for an unscheduled visit and has an adverse reaction to her son's new family situation. Also in this episode we don't hear the word "racist" used instead Phillip Drummond calls his mother a "snob" or Willis calls her prejudice. I can only guess because it was 1978 and maybe censorship not allowing that word to be used on prime time TV, I'm not sure. It takes Willis's help to make Phillip see his mother is not just "set in her ways" and he finally calls her out on it. I loved Arnold's one-liners in this episode and Mrs. Garrett is always a delight. The sibling squabbling at breakfast a joy to see as well as Philipp having to referee. Many jokes about Arnold's short stature and his appetite were made mainly by Arnold himself. Join me next week when I cover S1E4: Prep School, which aired on November 24, 1978. Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Diff'rent Strokes To Move The World: A Diff'rent Strokes Podcast. Today, I covered S1E2: The Social Worker, which aired on November 10, 1978. In this episode a social worker investigates the boys' home life and tells Mr. Drummond that she believes black children belong in black households. When Drummond tells this to Mrs. Garrett while she is vacuuming the living room, Arnold overhears this and comes to the conclusion that he doesn't want them around anymore. I really enjoyed this episode. I loved Arnold's one-liners. Phillip Drummond telling the boys that he loved them after they told him they wanted to go live with a black couple was so heartfelt, even after only a couple weeks together he doesn't want to be split apart. Luckily for this new family Arnold is corrected on what he thought he heard Phillip say and both Willis and Phillip set the social worker straight when she informed them her computer requested that black kids do better in black families. I really enjoy Willis's protective nature of looking after Arnold but sometimes his stubbornness gets in the way of his logical reasoning. I for one am looking forward to revisiting these characters again and watching them grow up as they face new challenges overcoming obstacles and discover their strengths and weaknesses, as I go through the episodes. Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen, the host of the new podcast, Diff'rent Strokes To Move The World: An Unofficial Diff'rent Strokes Podcast. Today, I covered S1E1: Movin' In, which aired on November 3, 1978. In this episode Philip Drummond is a wealthy Manhattan industrialist who takes in Arnold and Willis Jackson, the two sons of his late housekeeper; Drummond is white and the boys are black. Arnold, age 8, is excited about the opportunity of a privileged life, but Willis, age 13, feels that Mr. Drummond is trying to buy their love with expensive gifts. I really enjoyed this episode and felt that this was a good first episode for a show, giving us just enough insight on the characters, to slowly over time form an attachment and keep us tuned in to see how they grow and learn over the course of time. We definitely learn that Arnold is the kid who loves to eat and he seems more accepting to change while Willis is the one who takes longer to warm up to someone, always on his guard and will be constantly questioning and challenging his new father's authority. Kimberly Drummond, Phillip's daughter will bring a nice feminine perspective to the boy's life. I loved how she was so open and receptive to the boys upon their arrival. Phillip Drummond, has a lot to learn from Arnold and Willis and he has a lot to teach them, we will see a lot of culture and class clashing at least in the first three seasons or so. And of course, Mrs. Garrett, who provides comedic relief for the show and a mother figure for the children. As it stands right now, this podcast will be once a month until I finish with the Silver Spoons Podcast in late summer of this year and then the Diff'rent Strokes Podcast will be twice a month. Today, I covered the next episode in the Jesse & Becky: A Love Story Series Full House S5E10: Happy Birthday babies, Part 2, which aired on November 12, 1991. In this episode, it is finally Michelle's fifth birthday party. Everyone dresses up. Dj dresses up as Wilma in Michelle's Flintstones themed party. Stephanie dresses up as Betty Flinstone, Danny, is Dino and all of the kids wear cave men clothes. Comet has a dinosaur costume on and Jesse is dressed up as Fred. Just as Jesse plans to go downstairs to celebrate Michelle's birthday, Becky goes into labor... and so does Jesse, but we soon learn that he has appendicitis. Michelle has to cut her birthday short, but she doesn't mind because her new cousins, Nicky and Alex, get to share her birthday. She especially can't wait because triple the birthday means triple the cake! As always the episode got me in the feels department when we see Jesse and Becky holding their newborn twin sons who they name Nicky and Alex. The shenanigans at the Tanner house prior to lead up to the birth , from The Flintstones costumes, which were awesome looking, btw's. Michelle and her guests being left alone for a mere 5 minutes giving us a classic 90's drop of the famous Home Alone hands slap to the face scream. I also learn the name of the cat from The Flintstones, get this, it's "Baby Puss", gross right? They couldn't have named it Tiger. How many shows can you name, that have a character undergoing an appendectomy. I can name a few, from back in the day, Diff'rent Strokes, Silver Spoons, Punky Brewster and what Jeremy declares this episode of Full House to be a blatant rip off storyline of is Night Court, where Mac's wife goes into labor and he has to have his appendix removed. Loved Danny rocking out to Queen's We Will Rock You while coaching Becky through her breathing and contractions. Also his Dino costume was hands down the best. Join me next week when I cover the final episode in the Jesse & Becky: A Love Story Series Fuller House S1E13: Love Is In The Air, which aired on February 26, 2016. Hey Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of She's A Small Wonder: A Small Wonder Podcast. Today, I covered S1E13: Brainwashed, which aired on November 30, 1985. In this episode Vici goes to play with Harriet and she tells her how to demand things from her parents. This breaks down Viki's internal circuit and Ted need to re-configure her. I enjoyed this episode. We got to see how the other half lived. The other being Harriet. I think this statement would be Jamie Lawson approved as he is President of the I Hate The Brindles Fan Club. Harriet was at her top most annoying in the episode so far in Season 1, granted I think Bonnie, her mother topped her. We get another spanking reference by Ted, the idea of him joking about spanking Vici because she put the dishes along with the tablecloth in the sink is just cray-cray. I get it, it was the 80's, the only other parent that speaks of spanking as much as Ted Lawson is Phillip Drummond in regards to Arnold Jackson in Diff'rent Strokes, which I will be covering once a month starting in April. Join me in February when I cover S1E14: The Burrito Story, which aired on January 4, 1986. Wow, a whole month hiatus. So this next episode is the first episode of the new year in 1986. In this episode Jamie learns about business when he sells burritos, If you'd like to EMAIL The Podcast about your Small Wonder memories or comments on past episodes send all EMAILS To: lbomwonderyearspodcast@gmail.com Have a great weekend everyone!
