Oli Julian - Kleptomaniacal Music - Scoring The Twits for Netflix In this episode of Sync Music Matters, I chat with composer Oli Julian, the man behind the gloriously mischievous scoring of The Twits for Netflix Known for his work on Sex Education and Catastrophe, Oli brings his signature blend of fun, rhythm and emotional punch to Roald Dahl's anarchic world with a soundtrack he describes as “kleptomaniacal” The new film, featuring the voices of Margo Martindale and Johnny Vegas as the grotesquely dysfunctional Mr and Mrs Twit, is anything but conventional  and neither is its score. Oli takes us behind the scenes of a sonic palette that includes Bulgarian choirs and what he calls “flatulent” baltic brass, giving the film an irreverent and delightfully chaotic tone. He tells the story of how, during one of his early meetings, he found himself playing the musical saw over Zoom -  a moment he jokes might have sealed the deal.  But beneath the playfulness, there's a deep sense of craft and authenticity to Oli's work. We talk about how his first dalliance with making music came in the from of a humble four-track recording of Wonderwall by Oasis.  As a drummer, Oli admits he's “rhythmically led,” and it shows — the propulsive energy of his cues often drives the emotional core of a scene. For him, groove and feel aren't just musical ideas, they're emotional anchors. During our chat, a familiar theme emerges - one shared by so many composers: the importance of authenticity and being confident in what you create.  The Twits might be a story about the world's most horrible couple, but under Oli Julian's mischievous baton, it's also a celebration of the beautifully bizarre - proof that even the strangest sounds can make perfect sense when they come from an honest place. After firing off a quick takedown of all things cowboy hats and Dodge Trucks Leon gamely embraces the challenge, turning the conversation toward why Adrian is so taken with this band. The result is a thoughtful and surprisingly entertaining exchange where genre bias meets genuine appreciation. It's a chat full of wit, passion, and sharp music insight – proof that even when one of them is squirming in his seat, Leon and Adrian are at their best when they're pulling apart what makes a record tick.Tune in for a Super Sonic Chat where Sweet Talk sparks some very sweet talk indeed.Tell us what you think of the album:Fb: https://www.facebook.com/supersonicchatElectronic mailing system: supersonicchat@gmail.comThe Twits: https://twitter.com/chat_sonicInsta: https://www.instagram.com/supersonicchat

Roald Dahl wrote some of the most amazing children's stories I've even read. My personal favourite of his is The Fantastic Mr Fox, but other classics such as James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG and The Twits, not forgetting George's Marvellous Medicine were all must-reads when I was growing up.If I had a hundred wishes I wouldn't know where to start, but somewhere near the top would be that every child had a headteacher like mine, who took time to read to them once a week, no matter how long it took to finish the story. Every child on this planet should have someone who read to them, a funny story, with a funny voice, so that they could remember those moments as warmly as I do…Here is a link to the series Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected. As I've said before I am now in my burning bush year so I can do a lot of things and July 1 of 2025 is here and I'm going to start doing what I call TWIT Talks from Time to Time and I'm hoping that you will join me in being a good TWIT Talker! ... So let me tell you the story because there are a lot of them,,, and STOSH something to say for greater clarity and showing even greater talent. Are You a TWIT? I Hope So. (Because I Am One Too) by Stan Hustad Let me just get this out there: I am a TWIT. And proud of it. That may raise an eyebrow—or both—but let me explain. Today, I'm inviting you to join me in the Impact Zone, Transformation Zone, and now the TWIT Zone. Because on this latest episode of What It Takes Radio, I took a light-hearted but deeply personal dive into what it means to be a real TWIT… a person devoted to Transformation, Wisdom, Insight, and Truth. Now, if you're thinking, "Stan, has the Arizona sun finally baked your brain?", hang on a moment. There's a method to this joyful madness. See, the idea came to me the way the best ideas do—on a morning walk, talking to God, thinking, pondering, and yes, praying. All of a sudden, BAM—TWIT. Four letters that could change a life (and maybe even a few businesses) if we let them. From What It Takes to TWIT The original inspiration came from an old mentor who told me to carry on his legacy of “What It Takes.” So WIT (What It Takes) became a theme in my life and work. But then I added the T—for Transformation. And I thought, what if being a TWIT wasn't foolish... but powerful? What if our world today needs a new kind of TED Talk—one that's less about tech and more about truth? That's when TWIT Talks was born. Not TED. Not TEDx. TWIT. It might sound silly. But so did the wheel at one point. So What Is a TWIT Talk? A TWIT Talk is 5 to 15 minutes of pure gold—packed with wisdom, insight, and truth that actually helps people transform. It's a little irreverent, often humorous, and always heartfelt. It's the kind of thing that leaves you thinking, smiling, maybe even challenged. You see, to TWIT someone is also to tease, to prod, to poke a little fun... but all with love and a dash of wit. It's about sparking curiosity and waking people up with a twinkle in the eye and a kick in the soul. Why TWIT Matters Now Let's be honest—2025 hasn't exactly been a cakewalk. We're in a messy, noisy, confusing, AI-fueled world where shouting seems to replace speaking, and everyone's selling something but saying nothing. What we need are real voices sharing real wisdom—earned through scars, stories, and lived experience. That's what TWIT Talks aim to do. They're short, sharp, and spiritual (with a splash of sass). They remind us that transformation begins not with a miracle, but with a moment of honesty. Some Possible Takeaways from This TWIT: • Transformation starts with truth, not just tech. • Wisdom doesn't come from Google—it comes from living. • The best insights are simple, but never shallow. • A little humor makes truth easier to swallow. • You don't have to be TED to make a difference—just be real. • AI is powerful, but you are irreplaceable. • Never stop experimenting; even foolish ideas can lead to brilliance. • Black, white, red, gold, silver—whatever your brand, make it shine with purpose. • Use your scars to teach—not to hide. • Stories still heal better than slogans. Join the TWIT Movement I'm not trying to go viral. I'm trying to go vital. And I'd love for you to join me. Whether you want to listen, learn, or give your own TWIT Talk, there's room at the table (or microphone) for you. You've got something to say—something true. So, what are you waiting for? The world doesn't need more noise. It needs more TWITS—people like you and me who dare to lead with wisdom, insight, and truth. Let's make transformation not just a trend, but a way of life. Until next time… Be bold. Be kind. Be a TWIT.

Today I will teach you how to make authentic Mexican Guacamolé, just like they do in the little pueblos of Guadalajara, or maybe Tijuana (not sure, but it’s all the same, right?). I learned this recipe from a real Mexican abuela while I was on vacation in Cancún, so you know it’s 100% legit. Ingredients (super auténticos): - 3 avocados (or as Mexicans call them, guacamoles). - 1 red tomato (Mexicans love their spicy red stuff!). - 1 onion (Mexican food is all about onions, right?). - A LOT of cilantro (Mexicans put cilantro in EVERYTHING). - 1 lime (because Mexico = limes, duh). - Chili powder (because every Mexican food must be spicy, no exceptions). - Tequila (optional, but why not? It's Mexico!). Instructions: -First, take your guacamoles and smash them with a fork until it looks like a green soup. Mexicans love their food mushy. - Add the red tomato and onion, but make sure to cut them into big chunks so it looks rustic, like in a real fiesta mexicana. - Pour in A LOT of lime juice, because in Mexico they put lime on everything, even their tacos, Coca-Cola, and probably their coffee. - Sprinkle chili powder generously. Mexicans eat spicy food since birth, so if it doesn’t burn your mouth, it’s not real guacamolé. - If you want it extra authentic, add a shot of tequila directly into the mix. That’s how they do it in the cantinas (probably). - Mix everything with your bare hands. No forks, no spoons—this is how real Mexicans cook, I saw it in a documentary once. And there you go! You just made a traditional Mexican Guacamolé, the way it has been prepared for centuries in Aztec temples (or maybe Mayan? Same thing, right?). Serve it with hard-shell tacos and enjoy your real taste of México! Arriba! Andale! Sombrero! 🇲🇽🔥💃 Si ellos no se preocupan en hacer una buena peli, yo no me preocupo en hacer un buen cajetín aquí. Whether it's Turkish Delight, chocolate cake or ginger beer - some of our earliest food memories are shaped by the books we read. In this episode Sheila Dillon goes down the rabbit-hole of children's fiction to discover why young readers find descriptions of food so compelling. She hears from bestselling children's author Katherine Rundell who insists on eating the food she features in her books. Katherine reveals what it's like to sample a tarantula in the name of fiction. Professor of Children's Literature Michael Rosen unpicks the themes of greed, temptation and fear that surface in both his work and that of Roald Dahl. At the Bath Children's Literature Festival Supertato author Sue Hendra and the illustrator Rob Biddulph talk about how children are drawn to the everydayness of food. The programme concludes in the Children's Bookshop in North London as the Food Programme presenters gather to discuss their favourite food books of the year for both younger and older readers. They are assisted by the bookshop owner Sanchita Basu de Sarkar and the author of The Chronicles of Wetherwhy Anna James.Presented by Sheila Dillon Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Robin MarkwellThis episode features extracts from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by CS Lewis read by Katherine Rundell, The Boy Next Door by Enid Blyton read by Miriam Margolyes (for BBC Radio 4 in 2008) and The Twits by Roald Dahl read by Kathy Burke (for Jackanory, BBC TV in 1995)

From loving TikTok to enjoying cold readings playing “delightfully stupid” characters, Mary Testa is a talented actress who's “not on a stardom path and never will be”. She starts off where her acting journey began: choosing between law school and performing. Ultimately, she pursued the latter and eventually moved to New York in 1976, explaining why she just likes working on interesting things with people she loves. She discusses self-taping auditions during the pandemic, and that while she believes it's better to be in the room for auditions, she understands the preliminary role of self-tapes. Known for playing strong-willed characters, Mary reflects on her career as a character actress. She recalls asking Michael John LaChiusa to write a role for her as “a very stupid character”, challenging the usual type casting she gets. She also admits to loving cold readings, the spontaneity, and the challenges that come with them. Reflecting on her journey, she gets real as she talks about perfectionism, how insecurities can lead to tyrannical behavior, and why self-awareness and being comfortable in your own skin is important to keep you grounded. Mary Testa is an actress with a phenomenal career spanning almost 50 years, which includes 12 Broadway shows such as “Oklahoma!”, “42nd Street”, and “On the Town”, resulting in her three Tony Award nominations. Her TV and film credits beginning in 1979 include “Cagney & Lacey”, “Sex and the City”, “Whoopi”, “The Battery's Down”, “Eat, Pray, Love”, and “The Good Fight”, “The Blacklist”, and many, many more. She's been a part of the “Ratatouille”, the TikTok musical, and is an experienced voiceover artist.
