What's really in your child's school lunch — and what's it doing to their health? In this eye-opening episode, I sit down with Nora LaTorre, CEO and co-founder of Eat Real, to unpack the state of school food in America. Nora shares the shocking truth behind the ultra-processed meals fed to millions of kids each day — and how it's contributing to the rise in type 2 diabetes, attention issues, and chronic disease. We explore how school cafeterias became “the largest restaurant chain in America,” what's fueling the crisis, and how Nora is fighting back through policy, advocacy, and real food. You'll hear why she believes parents have more power than they think, what other countries are doing differently, and what we can do — starting at home — to reclaim our children's health. If you've ever felt heartbroken or helpless about the food your child is served at school, this episode is your blueprint for change. Topics include: The shocking amount of sugar in school meals Why ultra-processed food is a threat to child development How school lunches affect focus, emotional health, and behavior What real leadership in food policy looks like Simple actions parents can take to advocate for better food Resources: Website: www.eatreal.org Where to donate: www.eatreal.org/donate Eat Real's Instagram: @eatrealcertified Nora's Instagram: @nourishedwithnora LinkedIn: Eat Real Certified Follow the host, Claudia, on Instagram here: Healing The Source Website Shop Puori grass-fed protein powder + supplements (Clean Label Certified and third-party tested!!!) discount code: HEALINGTHESOURCE

Today's episode is one I'm especially excited to share with you. Whether you're an Executive Function expert or you're just starting out learning about these essential life skills, you'll want to listen because we have not one but *two* Executive Function leaders featured.First up, I'm so happy to have been joined once again by the OG of Executive Function awareness, Ellen Galinsky, who sat down with me on Focus Forward in March of 2024 when her book, The Breakthrough Years, came out. Ellen is the President of the Families and Work Institute and the elected President of the Work and Family Researchers Network (WFRN). She also serves as senior research advisor to AASA, the School Superintendent Organization. Previously, she was the Chief Science Officer at the Bezos Family Foundation and faculty at Bank Street College. Her research has focused on the impact of work-life on families, child and adolescent development, youth voice, child-care, parent-professional relationship, and parental development. Ellen's work has contributed deeply to how we understand children's learning and development - and how we, as adults, can nurture it. Our second Executive Function leader is Dr. Megan McClelland, an internationally recognized expert on school readiness and self-regulation in very young children. She is the Katherine E. Smith Professor of Human Development and Family Sciences at Oregon State University, where she also directs the Hallie E. Ford Center for Healthy Children and Families. Megan's research focuses on optimizing children's development, especially as it relates to children's self-regulation, early learning, and school success. Her recent work has examined links between self-regulation and long-term outcomes from early childhood to adulthood and intervention efforts to improve these skills in young children. She is currently involved with multiple national and international projects to develop measures of self-regulation and improve school success in young children. Megan is also the co-author of Stop, Think, Act, a book all about how we as educators and parents can help our kids strengthen their EF skills through play.Today, you'll hear us talk about why executive function skills matter and how we can help kids strengthen them through everyday activities - Megan and Ellen help parents and educators see that we learn when we play! Conversations that protect you and your kids are important. On the latest episode of Young & Healthy, host Bo McMillian sits down with social worker Ashley Cremeans to dive into the importance of teaching kids about boundaries from an early age. The team explores how setting clear boundaries—like allowing kids to say no to hugs or respecting privacy during dressing and bathing when age-appropriate—helps build confidence and independence. We'll also discuss how boundaries evolve over time, why respecting others' boundaries is just as important as setting your own, and how cultural and family norms play a role. Plus, we'll share practical tips to help kids recognize that privacy is both earned and deserved, guide parents in handling boundary-crossing conversations, set social media limits, and more. When I heard that a pediatric organization was so focused on mental health screenings in their office, my mind couldn't quite get around the need for mental health screeners for children. However, that's what made me particularly interested to sit down and talk with Shannon Fox-Levine MD, FAAP, President, Pediatrician, and Kimberly Brennan, Practice Administrator at Palm Beach Pediatrics. Their focus on keeping infants and young children safe both mentally and physically is admirable and a model for so many other pediatric organizations. Of course, here at Healthcare IT Today we were particularly interested in how they were using Yosi Health to administer these screenings along with improving the patient experience. Dr. Fox and Brennan highlight how the digital screenings through Yosi Health had a number of advantages. First, patients prefer filling out electronic forms at their convenience much more than paper forms on a clipboard in the office. Second, the digital screeners are integrated right into Palm Beach Pediatrics EHR so the data is readily available for the clinicians. The health of children today is a growing concern, with rising rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and early signs of heart disease becoming increasingly prevalent. Recent studies have shown that even children as young as 10, consuming a standard American diet (SAD), exhibit fatty streaks in their blood vessels—a precursor to heart disease. Type 2 diabetes, once primarily an adult disease, is now being diagnosed more frequently in adolescents. These alarming trends highlight the urgent need for better nutritional education and lifestyle changes from an early age. Dr. Roxanne George's Journey into Lifestyle Medicine One medical professional who is committed to turning these trends around is Dr. Roxanne George, a board-certified pediatrician. On the most recent episode of the NHA Health Science podcast, Dr. George shared her transformative journey and insights into combating these health challenges with host, Dr. Frank Sabatino. Initially drawn to epigenetics and cystic fibrosis research during her college years, Dr. George's career trajectory shifted significantly when she moved to Houston. There, she encountered alarmingly high childhood obesity rates, which underscored the inadequacies of current nutritional education in pediatric care. Discovering the Impact of Plant-Based Nutrition In Houston, Dr. George discovered the critical need to address childhood obesity and nutritional deficiencies. Her research revealed flaws in traditional dietary recommendations, particularly those promoting dairy consumption for calcium. She found that dairy products were associated with increased risks of cancer, diabetes, and high saturated fat levels. This revelation prompted Dr. George to explore plant-based nutrition as a healthier alternative. A Personal and Professional Transformation Dr. George's deep dive into the benefits of a plant-based diet led to a personal and professional shift. Influenced by seminal works like the China Study, she embraced a plant-based lifestyle almost overnight. This shift not only improved her own health but also reinforced her commitment to advocating plant-based nutrition within her pediatric practice. Addressing Early Onset of Chronic Diseases Dr. George is particularly concerned about the early onset of chronic diseases among children. The presence of fatty streaks in the blood vessels of 10-year-olds and the rising incidence of type 2 diabetes in adolescents highlight the critical need for dietary interventions. She advocates for a plant-based diet rich in fiber and low in saturated fats to combat these trends and improve long-term health outcomes. Integrating Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine Dr. George's practice integrates nutrition and lifestyle medicine into every pediatric visit. While her colleagues may not all be plant-based, they share a commitment to promoting nutrition and healthy lifestyles. In the past, women were often overlooked in many areas of life. Even with steps towards equal rights, society sometimes pushes women to fit in or stay quiet. Speaking up isn't just about sharing personal views, it's key to moving society forward. When women share their opinions, they challenge old ideas, defend their rights, and help create a more welcoming, diverse world. Miesha Tate shares her life experiences, lessons, and advice to future leaders. Women thrive when they find the courage to use their voices and embrace their strength. As a celebrated UFC athlete and dedicated mother, Miesha exemplifies resilience and empowerment. Tune in as young leaders ask questions about personal growth, leadership, overcoming challenges, and more! Quotes: "I feel my own strength. I don't shy away from that at all. As a female, I feel so blessed to be in this country with the opportunity to make an impact. I would be remiss to let that be wasted.” – Miesha Tate "80% of autoimmune diseases belong to women. I don't think that's a coincidence. I think it's because of all the things that I just listed, that we are trying to do not only the man's job but also the traditional woman's job. We're really spread thin.” – Miesha Tate "I want transparency. I want to be able to give the truth to whoever wants to know the truth. So that I can make informed decisions, you know, that's what I want." – Miesha Tate Takeaways: Prioritize self-care and maintain a balanced lifestyle. Setting aside time for rest, play, and healthy habits, which will not only benefit individual health, but also set a good example for children. Understand and define personal values and identity outside traditional roles like mother, wife, or career, and know one's inherent worth. Regular self-reflection can aid in this process and lead to improvements in all areas of life. Educate children about nutrition and advocate for transparency in the food system. This includes questioning what we don't know, supporting local farmers, and considering growing our own food for healthier options. Women often feel immense pressure to manage all aspects of life. It's important to find a supportive community and ask for help when needed to prevent burnout. Start the day with a routine that promotes positivity and accomplishment, such as light exposure, meditation, and goal-setting. This, along with fostering a strong, educated community, can empower individuals and families to flourish. Conclusion: Self-care, community involvement, and education are the keys to personal and family happiness. It's okay to feel stressed sometimes, but always remember to take care of your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Set some goals, don't be afraid to ask for help, and make decisions based on what you know is right. Staying open-minded, balanced and committed to personal growth can help us face life's challenges, find that inner strength, and stay true to what we believe in.

In 2015, the Adolescent Sexuality Conference in Seaside, Oregon was canceled due to public outcry over its content, including discussions on porn and drug use during sex. Recently, similar figures re-emerged at the Joining Our Youth (JOY) Conference held at Oregon State University. This event, focusing on school-based health clinics, aimed to empower youth to access a range of health services, including mental health and gender-affirming care. The JOY Conference, supported by the Oregon School-Based Health Alliance and the Hallie E. Ford Center for Healthy Children and Families, brought together over 200 attendees, including youth leaders, educators, and health practitioners. The conference provided interactive activities and workshops aimed at promoting health services through youth-adult partnerships and included discussions on culturally responsive clinical approaches and policy sustainability. However, the event has been met with criticism. One example involves Shantel Waddell, who discussed extending day programs for community schools. This follows a recent lawsuit where a program she was involved with was accused of mishandling a sexual assault case involving minors. Another presenter, Nicole Mayer, focused on enhancing youth/adult partnerships, emphasizing her diverse identity and commitment to various social issues, which some may see as a push towards activism rather than education.Furthermore, Haley Hedrick from the Doernbecher Gender Clinic discussed supporting gender diverse youth, emphasizing resilience amidst political and cultural challenges. She offered insights into both medical and non-medical pathways for gender affirmation, emphasizing youth-centered decision-making models.Critics of the JOY Conference argue that its strong focus on youth empowerment and engagement could veer into activism, potentially sidelining parental involvement in the developmental and educational processes of their children. The conference literature notably lacked any mention of parental roles, raising concerns about the exclusion of parents from discussions about their children's health and education. This event reflects ongoing tensions between educational initiatives aimed at inclusivity and community responses that demand more traditional approaches to education and parental involvement.Support the Show.DONATE TODAY!www.ParentsRightsInEducation.com
