Brian Murphy is based in Raleigh and his title is Sports Investigative Reporter for WRAL TV. Of late there's been a lot to investigate at North Carolina's football program as Bill Belichick operates in a shroud of secrecy so thick that his players didn't have jersey numbers during the Tar Heels' recent spring game. In addition, Belichick's 24-year-old girlfriend has taken on a strange role within the football program as she regularly scrutinizes UNC's communications staff for not doing a better job protecting the image of Belichick and those below him (including Bill's son Steve, the Tar Heels' defensive coordinator). Here is an excerpt from Murphy's coverage of a spring game that was not remotely like most spring games: No numbers on the jerseys for any player throughout spring or in Saturday's final practice. No player interviews throughout spring or after Saturday's final practice. No assistant coach interviews throughout spring or after Saturday's final practice. Belichick spoke to the media near the beginning of spring practice ... and not again. Not even at the end of Saturday's event. Didn't even pick up the microphone to thank everyone for coming out or tell them how important their presence this fall would be. Murphy, a graduate of UNC, is a former newspaper sportswriter who covered Georgia Tech during the Chan Gailey era before moving to Boise and having a front-row seat to the Broncos' incredible rise to football prominence. He was there for Boise State's unforgettable 43-42 triumph over Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. Before moving back to his roots in Raleigh he lived in Washington D.C., where he covered Congress for the News & Observer of Raleigh.

The NFL Draft was a bit dull for the first 7 picks, luckily the Atlanta Falcons were up next. With the 8th pick in their pocket, several needs at the defensive end of the ball, and having recently signed Kirk Cousins to $180 million, they took 23-year-old injury-prone quarterback Michael Penix Jr. After that it was pandemonium. Fortunately, we have a friend of the program, the incomparable Chan Gailey to help us sort out the first round, and tell us what the falcons were thinking. First and foremost, big thanks to Troy Taylor from Totem Pole Nation for getting this set up. I can't thank him enough for making this happen. Former Duke football head coach Fred Goldsmith stopped by the podcast to talk about his early career in football, a stop at Rice and his time coaching the Blue Devils. We learned about a lot of great coaches that Coach Goldsmith worked with including Ken Hatfield, Chan Gailey, Mike Heimerdinger and Craig Bohl among others. During this long and informative discussion, we learn a lot about the challenges Coach Goldsmith faced after an amazing 1994 season, the number of players he got in the NFL and how he was close to getting Duke over the hump before he was let go after the 1998 season. I know you will enjoy listening to Coach Goldsmith tell some great stories about his time leading the Blue Devils. We also talk about how, after the 1994 season, Coach Goldsmith was close to getting a lot of high-profile coaching jobs. You won't believe where he almost ended up. If you get a chance, you should check out his book, Comeback Coach. I bought it a few years back. It's a quick and entertaining read. Please call the pod (540-632-0160), leave a message and you'll get in an episode. Former Steelers offensive coordinator Chan Gailey joined the show. Chan talked about the challenges that come with trying to work a 3-man race for starting quarterback. Chan got into how many reps each QB gets in a true competition and how difficult that is to pull off. He likes the strategy of splitting the day up for the three guys, instead of giving each QB his individual day. Chris asked Chan if the veterans on offense should have input on which QB they like the most. He said depending on the veteran, it definitely carries weight into the discussion. Chan talked about late-night discussions he had with Bill Cowher regarding the starting quarterback position. He said there's not a cookie cutter way to treat rookie QBs because everyone is different, but if a guy can sit for a year that is best for their future. On being a QB today, Chan said it's easier today in regards to taking hits in the pocket thanks to player safety, but everything else is harder. Chris asked about how Kordell Stewart would fit into today's NFL.
Mike Tomlin talked to the media as everyone entered training camp. He gave out the initial QB depth chart, listing Mitch Trubisky first and Kenny Pickett third. Mason Rudolph is currently listed as the second string QB – the guys wondered why they continue to hold out hope on his NFL career. Tyson Alualu and Minkah Fitzpatrick will not be active at the start of training camp due to small injuries – what are the concerns there? Evan says it allowed the Rangers to create the second surprise of the draft by taking Brock Porter, a first-round talent, in the fourth. [17:26] David gives his three storylines for training camp, led by Mike McCarthy's job security. Or lack thereof. Today's guest is Roddy Jones, who was actually drafted in the 39th round of the MLB Draft out of high school but went to Georgia Tech to play football. He did play one year of baseball at Georgia Tech in addition to being a 4-year starter at A-Back in Paul Johnson's triple option scheme, and he holds the record for most career starts at Georgia Tech with 52. He's also the Georgia Tech career leader in yards per carry at 7.6 and was a 3-time member of the All-ACC Academic Team. Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep A two-sport athlete at Dartmouth College, Jay Fiedler set school records for touchdown passes (58), passing yards (6,684), and total offense (7,249) with the Ivy League program while receiving his degree in Mechanical Engineering. His National Football League journey didn't start quite as smoothly, however, with a five-year quest featuring stints with four different NFL teams, a stop in NFL Europe, and a coaching gig at Hofstra University before signing with the Miami Dolphins prior to the 2000 season. Fiedler battled Damon Huard for the starting quarterback position and ultimately became the successor to Dolphins icon, Dan Marino. Helping to lead the Fins to back-to-back 11-5 seasons in his first two years under center, Fiedler was 36-17 in his first four years with the club. He is also the last Dolphins starting quarterback to win a playoff game. In The Tank, Jay details his unlikely path to Miami, recalls the talented Dolphins squad of the early 2000s, and sheds some light on working with then, and current, offensive coordinator, Chan Gailey. He also shares some of the benefits of being a Jewish quarterback in Miami and reveals his little known connection to current Dolphins Head Coach Brian Flores.

Today's guest is Sean Bedford, who played football at Georgia Tech from 2006–2010 and is now the color analyst on their radio broadcasts. Sean started his career as a walk-on, and by the end of it, he was the starting center, First Team All-ACC, and won the inaugural Burlsworth Trophy, given to the most outstanding player in the country to start their career as a walk-on. In 2010, Sporting News named him one of the 20 smartest athletes for graduating from the no. 4 aerospace engineering program in the country, and since then all he's done is play a year of professional football in Spain, get his law degree from the University of Florida, practice law while broadcasting football games, get married and have a son.Sean and I discussed how he ended up at Georgia Tech, how he went from walk-on Defensive End to First Team All-ACC Center, playing for Chan Gailey and Paul Johnson, eating enough to gain 50 pounds, his favorite stories from his playing days (including the 2008 win at Georgia), how international wifi almost cost him a chance at the color analyst job, and a lot more.Mentions include:The Sports Design BlogWinsipediaLive Lo-FiThe Chris Farley Show SNL sketch with Paul McCartneyThe Chris Farley Show SNL sketch with Jeff DanielsGeorgia Tech branding post no. 1Georgia Tech branding post no. 2Georgia Tech branding post that Sean and I talked aboutGeorgia Tech branding post no. 4Burlsworth TrophyGreater on NetflixOsos Rivas football team@SeanBedford79 on TwitterMakers of Sport podcastMike Russell tutorials on YouTubePodcast Method with Dan BenjaminPlease subscribe to the show and rate it on Apple Podcasts, and follow the show on Twitter and Instagram at @TWAwesomePod.
