In this episode of A LOAD OF BS ON SPORT, we're joined by Brett Gosper, a true sports industry heavyweight who has seamlessly navigated the worlds of elite rugby, global advertising, and now the NFL's international expansion. From Rugby Player to Sports Executive ExtraordinaireBrett's remarkable journey began as an Australian rugby player who, after missing out on a Wallabies trial, took a chance on playing in France. This "closing doors moment" led to a dual career – professional rugby by night and advertising executive by day. After 30 years in the advertising world, Brett made a surprising pivot back to sports, becoming CEO of World Rugby before taking on his current role as Head of NFL Europe and Asia Pacific.Navigating Complex Sports OrganisationsBrett offers fascinating insights into the contrasting challenges of leading World Rugby versus the NFL. While World Rugby required him to navigate the complex politics of a global federation with competing interests, the NFL presents a more unified but equally ambitious organisation. He reveals how his advertising background provided valuable perspective when approaching sports leadership, particularly in creating fan-centric strategies. The Global Expansion PlaybookAs the architect of the NFL's international growth strategy, Brett shares the meticulous planning behind bringing American football to new territories. From staging international games that feel like "mini Super Bowls" to developing academies in the UK and Australia, he outlines the NFL's comprehensive approach to finding the next 50 million fans outside the United States. He explains why cultural relevance is crucial when expanding into new markets, whilst still maintaining the authentic Americana experience that international fans crave.Developing International TalentThe conversation explores the fascinating International Player Pathway programme, which has produced success stories like Jordan Mailata, the Australian former rugby league player who became the first Australian to win a Super Bowl. Brett discusses the psychological challenges these athletes face transitioning to American football and how the NFL Academy system is creating pathways for international talent to reach the highest levels of the sport.Leadership Lessons from a Global Sports ExecutiveThis episode isn't just for sports fans – it's a masterclass in leadership across different organisational cultures. Brett's journey demonstrates the value of being adaptable, maintaining product quality while pursuing commercial growth, and always keeping the fan perspective at the centre of decision-making.Key Discussion Points:Career Crossroads: How missing a Wallabies trial led Brett to a transformative career in FranceFrom Advertising to Sports Leadership: The unexpected transition that brought Brett back to the sporting worldBalancing Culture and Commerciality: Maintaining the integrity of sports while pursuing global growthThe NFL's International Strategy: Creating fan engagement through games, academies, and flag footballLeadership Principles: The importance of listening to fans and athletes when making strategic decisionsCultural Differences: How rugby and NFL teams approach competition and player development Hosted on Acast. “I never really wanted kids because I never wanted to care more about somebody than I did myself. And when I had them, I became vulnerable. I was no longer invincible. I think that was something I needed.” James Harrison 2x Super Bowl Champ and 5x Pro Bowler on his biggest Pivot   After the sports world just witnessed one of the best defensive performances by a team in a Super Bowl with Philadelphia's win, we can't help but remember the infamous 100 yard interception return by James Harrison in Super Bowl XLIII and how maybe the All Pro Line Backer was onto something when he said, "Offense win games, Defense win championships." The Super Bowl hero and former Pittsburgh Steelers All Pro sits with his old teammate Ryan Clark, along with Channing Crowder and Fred Taylor, for a wide open and wide ranging conversation about his NFL journey, his unmatched intensity on and off the field and how fatherhood saved his life.  Starting out the gate, the question is asked: Is James Harrison actually scary, or just misunderstood? Channing has funny banter as the guys debate James' intense, no-nonsense demeanor and how he maintained this alter ego. Harrison shares how he was raised to believe that kindness could be mistaken for weakness and lived by that mantra with his on-field play reflecting it.  Harrison opens up about his struggles early on in his career from playing at Kent State to NFL Europe to getting cut multiple times, and almost walking away from football. But his relentless work ethic instilled from his parents and a 'chip on the shoulder' mentality fueled his efforts. He shares how Steelers Defensive Coordinator Dick LeBeau played a crucial role in shaping his career, admitting that without him, “There is no James Harrison.”   Harrison doesn't hold back when discussing some of his hardest hits and biggest fines, including a notable play involving Josh Cribbs that cost him $75,000, which he feels he shouldn't have paid, but perhaps someone in the room who was truly responsible for it, should have paid, as he gives a look to Ryan. The guys get into a deeper conversation about how the locker room and playing mentality was different during their days vs today's era. He reveals in a shocking story, what ultimately led him to leave Pittsburgh to play with AFC rivals Patriots and then Bengals. Always living on the edge with a reckless abandon approach to all aspects of his life, Harrison opens up on how becoming a father didn't just soften him, but changed his entire outlook financially, mentally and even safety wise. In a heartfelt moment, James shares the 180 his life took after becoming a dad and how 100% honesty is what guides his parenting skills, even when some things are better off not said!   From parenting advice to chatting about James' potential MMA/boxing match with Chad OchoCinco Johnson, the guys' conversation goes from laugh out loud moments to tears filling up discussing the evolution of life as the men have grown older.   This episode has it all whether a football fan or curious about life, family, growth as we peel back the layers of James Harrison- the fierce competitor, the devoted father, and the man who never backs down from a challenge.  Pivot Family-Use code 50PIVOT to get 50% OFF plus free shipping on your first Factor box at https://bit.ly/40yF3k1 Learn more about your ad choices. The playing field has changed in collegiate athletics, but Kaz Kazadi knows the keys to longevity. Get to know the Texas Christian University (TCU) Assistant Athletic Director of Football Human Performance, renowned for his ability to inspire athletes. Follow his roots from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) to playing for the National Football League (NFL) Los Angeles Rams — later becoming a “roaming gladiator” in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and NFL Europe to secure tenure. As a leader in the weight room, strength and conditioning was a natural transition. He recalls choosing a graduate assistantship to embody his “long money” philosophy of purpose-driven education, networking, and positivity. Kazadi compares new Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policies to free agency and talent acquisition versus recruiting. Additionally, he drills decision-making and delayed gratification as players transition into adulthood. He concludes with advice for creating a coaching network and career vision. Growing up in California, Nate Jackson spent all his time in the swimming pool… because he wasn't allowed to play football until high school. He excelled in the pool and figured out how to compete. Once he started high school, his football experience began as a running back. Nate had to catch up quickly with guys who had been playing for a while… and had hit puberty.   He caught up and moved to wide receiver, however in a run-first offense, Nate didn't get enough exposure to earn a college football scholarship. He decided he would try to walk on somewhere and settled on Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The football coach told him all the walk-on spots were full and he should come back in the spring. When he came back in the spring, Nate and the other walk-ons were put aside. So, he transferred to Division III Menlo College.   At Menlo, Nate set records at wide receiver, earned NCAA Division III Offensive Player of the Year his senior year and is now in their Hall of Fame. He went undrafted after graduation and was able to catch on with the 49er's. From there the ups and downs of pro football started: injury, cut, resigned, traded to the Broncos, NFL Europe, cut by Josh McDaniels, more injuries and a final try with the Las Vegas Locomotives.   Nate's body had enough. He retired, started a family and embarked on many missions: published a book, wrote numerous articles and became a radio talk show host. Today, he's working with Guerrilla Sports and is the NFL's Uniform Inspector on the Broncos sidelines during home games.   Listen to Nate's story and conversation with @susiewargin on the Cut Traded Fired Retired Podcast. In Part 1 of this episode, you'll hear the amazing journey of former NFL QB Craig Nall and How to Conquer Your Mind from Top 50 LPGA Instructor Debbie O'Connell. Craig takes us through his playing career which really started with a historic senior season at Northwestern State. We hear how he led them to the FCS playoff and nearly upset top-ranked Montana. Craig was drafted in the 5th round in 2002 by the Green Bay Packers. He backed up Brett Favre for the majority of his career. He also was assigned to NFL Europe in 2003 where he played for the Scottish Claymores. He was 2nd in the League in passing and led the League in just about every other category. During his NFL career, he came through every time his number was called. He threw for 402 yards, completed 63% of his passes, had 5 TDs and 0 interceptions, yet no other team gave him a true shot to play. Following his playing career and the passing of his father who was his best friend, Craig dealt with alcoholism and divorce. He's now sober, in a loving relationship, and started a new career. He takes us through his highs and lows in this segment. We go from that previous extreme to the other end of the rainbow in segment 2 when I'm joined by Debbie O'Connell. Debbie is one of the most positive individuals you'll ever meet. She teaches us how to strengthen our minds and bodies in this segment. We learn how to release our minds from worrying about the outcomes of our shots. If being in a greenside bunker gets your blood pressure up like it does mine, she gives us some tips for how to overcome that. His heritage in Colorado dates back five generations. So, it made sense when Mike Newell graduated from Littleton High School that he wanted to stay in Colorado despite football scholarships from many other schools. He quickly became Colorado State's starting center and along with being part of an offensive line that did not allow a sack for two straight seasons and a Holiday Bowl win over Missouri, Mike racked up a number of impressive accolades. He was eventually inducted into the CSU Athletics Hall of Fame. Along with Mike's great play, came some injuries, including a misdiagnosed back injury his senior season. Mike needed surgery and instead of going to the Senior Bowl and NFL combine, he went under the knife. Thankfully, the pain was gone after surgery, but a tough physical and mental road laid ahead as an undrafted free agent in the NFL. Over the course of 5 seasons, Mike was with the Packers, NFL Europe, Rams and Texans. The grind was real, and yet he never played a down in a regular season NFL game. When his career was over, he was relieved. Today, Mike still lives in Colorado, is an elementary school PE teacher and father to three very active teens. He continues to support the Rams and barely recognizes the guy who used to play center for CSU.

The Cabin is presented by the Wisconsin Counties Association and this week we're featuring Fond du Lac County: https://bit.ly/3PHGOqW  The Cabin is also brought to you by Group Health Trust: https://bit.ly/3JMizCXCampfire Conversation:The Green Bay Packers are a very unique team. While they have more championships in their illustrious (well, for the most part) history and are one of the oldest teams in the National Football League, they are also owned by a community of shareholders in what is by far the smallest “major league” city and market in the United States. They have fans all over the country and, increasingly, the world. The NFL in general is making inroads in Europe and particularly Germany, where more fans are posting about their love of the game and the NFL teams they follow. Ana, Eric, and Jake were able to talk with Stephan Schliemann, a Packers fan who lives in Gütersloh, Germany. Mr. Schliemann discovered American football through highlights on German television and became more interested in the teams - and Green Bay in particular. Now he has a “Packers Cave” in his basement of his home with some very cool decor, including signed jerseys from players, green LED lighting, and a pool table, couches, and of course a big TV for game-watching. Friends who are also football fans come over to watch during the games, which in Germany take place in late evenings much of the time. We talk with him about what drew him to football and Green Bay in particular, how friends and neighbors are also getting into the game, and the connections he now has with the U.S. as a result. We also surmise how much fun it would be to have him come to see Lambeau Field in person! The season - other than for the Chiefs and 49ers - may be over, but the Packers spirit lives on in this fun football conversation that spans the continents.See Stephan on Instagram @germanpackerscave, or link to https://www.instagram.com/germanpackerscave/Inside Sponsors:Best Western: https://bit.ly/3zCCK3fWCA: https://www.wicounties.org/

Most young assistant coaches dream of the day when they'll finally get a crack at promotion. But few are ready for the realities of being a head coach. Jesse Wright realized he still had a lot to learn when he was tasked with running the weight room for the NFL Europe team in Barcelona while still in his early 20s. His work ethic and ability to problem solve got him through that trying season, and upon returning to his native Philadelphia, he soon found himself working for the 76ers as a consulting coach through a local performance center that had a contract to oversee the NBA team's strength and conditioning. Overseeing the training of rookies, veterans like Andre Iguodala, Aaron McKie, and Elton Brand, and everyone in between, Jesse recognized the need to give players some degree of autonomy. After his company's contract ended, he assumed the full-time role of the Sixers S&C coach, and later become the team's Director of Performance Science. In this episode, Jesse reveals:Why younger players have so much to learn from the work habits of Aaron McKie, Andre Iguodal, and Elton BrandWhich elements of coaching football players transferred to his time in the NBAHow soft skills like communication, hustle, and vision can do more for anyone's career than technical proficiency How he continued his mother's creative legacy by writing two booksWhat tactics you can use to manage fast-growing teams in any walk of lifeTo learn more from Jesse, check out his book The Intent is to Grow, follow him on Instagram, and visit his website.
