Our guest this week is filmmaker, world traveler and media designer Daniel Rintz. The second of these is what we'll focus on, as a good portion of his world traveling was done on both a first- AND second-generation airhead GS. Daniel's two films Somewhere Else Tomorrow and Somewhere Else Together capture his travels, and journey of discovery. His website (link below)highlights both films and documents bike repairs during his travels, something we'll dig into a bit later in our conversation. We'll also answer the burning question, would he take an airhead GS around the world again? https://open-explorers.com/home.html We value your comments and suggestions and critiques. Drop us a line at airheads247@hotmail.com
So many of us postpone many of the things we’d like to do until something else happens first—we wait until we graduate, or until we get married, or until we have enough money, or until we retire—and then we realize, often too late, that we missed out on the experiences that would have enriched our lives. Well maybe there is another way… Daniel Rintz and Josephine Flohr are quite the dynamic duo. If you are a longtime listener to the show, you may recall my first conversation with them. I am so happy to have them back on to discuss what it is like to ride around the world on two motorcycles, covering over 100,000KM over the course of three years. Indeed this is an interview not to be missed—not just to learn how they did it and what it was like, but also what’s next. Daniel and Josephine are prime examples of living their lives in full and helping others in the process. Those familiar with Living a Life in Full will not be surprised to have the chance to learn from both of these intrepid travelers, as we have had in-depth conversations with three other motorcyclists, one of whom is also a world traveler on two wheels Glen Heggstad, another is a land speed record holder on a vintage BMW, Rebecca Berneck, and in an upcoming episode, Guinness World Record Holder, Leslie Porterfield. And speaking of going around the world, past president of the Circumnavigators Club David Mink has been a guest, Amy Scott talked about How to be Location Independent, and Matt Bailey gave listeners great tips for travel hacking. We discuss Daniel’s first trip, which was the basis for the award-winning documentary “Somewhere Else Tomorrow” along with their new, highly anticipated sequel, “Somewhere Else Together.” We delve into their travels through the Americas and Africa along with all the associated logistics and planning that went into the trip as well as the filming. We also cover their gear and equipment selection for shooting as well as their bikes (1982 BMW R80GS and 2007 BMW R1200GS). We go into some dicey situations as well—accidents, illness, a flood, along with unstable political situations, war zones and uncomfortable border crossings, and even a run-in with child soldiers. Also part and parcel of their journey was the humanitarian aspects. Daniel started out on the HUMA.tv team, and he discusses the Christmas spent with children from a Nepali orphanage, along with time spent with a minority group in Pakistan, and they describe the life of a Guatemalan mother and two daughters as "distressing and beautiful." Also, in Guatemala, they both became involved with The Integral Heart Foundation, and they tell us about their work. In the context of their newest film, which I had the honor to be a part of and serve as an Executive Producer (full disclosure), I came to appreciate their ethos and values in that “The sequel will ask more philosophical questions, because we’ve answered the practical ones already. Naturally, there will be challenges and hurdles that we overcome, but we’re more interested in what it means.” They are both very generous with their time in sharing this conversation, what they do is truly amazing and an inspiration.

So how would you travel the world—for years—with no money…? So many of us postpone many of the things we’d like to do, until something else happens first—we wait until we graduate, or until we get married, or until we have enough money, or until we retire—and then we realize, often too late, that we missed out on the experiences that would have enriched our lives. Well Daniel Rintz and Josephine Flohr are wonderful examples of not putting adventure and life on hold. Indeed, Daniel travel for three years on a motorcycle with the motto “2 wheels, 1 world, 0 money.” He made his way by taking on gigs as he traveled. He also shot much of his experience which became the basis for his award-winning first documentary “Somewhere Else Tomorrow.” Toward the end of that adventure, he met Josephine and within a short period of time, they set off, on motorcycles of course, to travel the rest of the world. Their travels through North, Central, and South America, and then Africa will serve as the basis for their next documentary. To date, this film-maker, media-designer and world-traveler, has traveled 200,000 km on his bike. Now riding with his partner and soul-mate Josephine, they have been moved by those they have met and worked with to want to contribute and be of help. Throughout their six-year journey around the world they have met those who are fighting for their lives every day. In some cases they helped by donating money, other times by helping repair or create something. In three particular cases they have stayed involved over the years working with a small minority group in Pakistan, the CYF orphanage in Nepal, and the Integral Heart Foundation in Guatemala. As they have said, their souls are full and their pockets are empty. Indeed this is an interview not to be missed—not just to learn how they did it and what it was like, but also what’s next. Daniel and Josephine are prime examples of living their lives in full and helping others in the process.

Daniel Rintz is a filmmaker, photographer and adventure motorcyclist from Dresden, Germany. Born in East Germany at a time when world travel was impossible for his family, Daniel’s whole world opened up when the Berlin wall fell and he embraced the opportunity to travel. Since then, he’s explored by bicycle, train and automobile, but motorcycling remains his passion. In 2008, with a rough plan and no money, Daniel and his friend left East Germany for an around the world motorcycle adventure. With no safety net, they planned to work to finance their trip as they went along. In 2010, while in Asia, Daniel met Josephine (Joey) Flohr who was on a backpacking trip. She joined Daniel in his passion for motorcycling and they have been doing trips together ever since. Daniel and Joey have recently completed a 3 year motorcycle adventure, and are putting together a film about their journeys, a sequel to Daniel’s first film “Somewhere Else Tomorrow”. In this episode, he shares some great tips on making money on the road, travelling in Africa, and more. Not for all people, but quite often for many of us, when we leave on a trip, be it a few weeks, months or a year or more, we face emotional and financial hurdles. First we spend time planning, and we reach a point where we have crossed all our t’s and dotted all our i’s. We know exactly how things are going to go, where we will be and how much money we need, or so we think. Once on the road, some of us may feel homesick, or lost. We get lonely, financially strapped, worried or unsure about how this trip will pan out. These hurdles, if you persevere, are usually overcome as you fall in to a rhythm. And soon the road becomes your home, you meet new people and experience new cultures. You can find work on the road in different locations, or be self employed, writing articles, blogging or making films. Once you find your niche, your comfort zone is expanded and you begin to thrive. As you know from the many extended travel riders we have interviewed in the past, there are those who find they have a need to return home at the end of a trip and some who don’t want to go back to a traditional life at all. Scooter Tramp Scotty and Michelle Hope are great examples of true living on the road. Finding work wherever they go, connecting with old friends and making new ones. And then are those who leave for a year and don’t come back home for 14 years. Ian Coates had wanderlust, travelling at a very slow pace. He just couldn’t bring himself to return home until he was good and ready. And some go for a while, then return home for a time, and hit the road again as soon as they can. They may have work or other obligations, health concerns or they just may feel the need to spend time with family before tasting freedom again. Ara Geureghian and Spirit spend most of their time on the road, returning home for different reasons, always with the intention of getting on the road again as soon as possible. Daniel Rintz and his partner Josie, have just completed their riding adventure from Alaska to Argentina. When the trip was coming to an end, they realized they just couldn’t stop riding and go back to a regular lifestyle. They prefer to face Africa underfunded, figuring out the financial bits as they go rather than go back to normal life. For some, this is hard to fathom, for others, well, we either dream about it or do it. We’ve had many opportunities to explore old cemeteries and something always seems to grab us when we do. When we look at the names and dates, the condition of the graves, we realize that one day it is inevitable, we will be forgotten. Our families and friends will remember us while they are still living, but as the years go by, pretty soon we are just a name on a gravestone with a birth and death date. If we won’t be remembered forever, then isn’t only right that we should live life to the fullest, throw caution to the wind and make memories for ourselves? Why let our fears or worries about travel and the unknown stop us? Take that trip or live the lifestyle that you have always wanted to. Be it on the road for 14 years, 14 months, or 14 days, just get in to the rhythm and travel. Experience life, escape the box.
