ICD10monitor and Talk Ten Tuesdays continue reporting on the social determinants of health (SDoH), as they relate to health equity. On Tuesday, Jan. 18, the day after the national observance of the life of slain civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Sharon Easterling, an African-American senior healthcare consultant, will return to the broadcast to report on this timely and crucially important subject. Many Americans no doubt recall seeing the grainy black-and-white TV news footage of the Rev. King delivering his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. Fast forward to the present, and Easterling will note that the speech was profoundly rooted in healthcare, with King opining that healthcare is for all, and good healthcare begins with the patient experience in the eyes of many, especially minorities. Easterling is also expected to report on the need for improving the patient care experience, noting that distrust in healthcare is deep-seated, especially in the Black community, but it all begins with the initial patient interaction. Providers can directly impact outcomes with an aim to prevent widening health inequities by tailoring  strategies targeted at overcoming mistrust and refocusing on improving the patient experience within minority populations. The live broadcast will also feature these other segments:CDI Report: Senior healthcare consultant Cheryl Ericson will report on the latest documentation issues facing clinical documentation integrity specialists (CDISs).The Coding Report: Laurie Johnson will report on the latest coding news that has appeared on her radar screen.  News Desk: Timothy Powell, compliance expert and ICD10monitor national correspondent, will anchor the Talk Ten Tuesdays News Desk.TalkBack: Erica Remer, MD, founder and president of Erica Remer, MD, Inc., and Talk Ten Tuesdays co-host, will report on a subject that has caught her attention during her popular segment.SPECIAL ADDED FEATURE:Immediately following the broadcast, Sharon Easterling will report on her newest software application (app), CDIWis.

The Medicare advisory committee, MedPAC, has recommended a cautious approach, however, that would temporarily cover some telehealth services for all beneficiaries, but revert to lower reimbursement rates post-crisis for virtual appointments compared to in-person. The totality is the patient story. And hasn’t that been the problem since the inception of templates, and one of the other reasons many rallied for changes to the guidelines?Templates and stern requirements regarding how the patient encounter is documented tend to change – and at times, strangle – the story of the patient.
