There is a lot to say about joining a startup, and I'm saying that as somebody who has been a part of four of them. Nothing prepares you for the first time, because you truly have no idea what you're walking into! Not even the offer letter or the job description paints the full picture, so Christine Song, founder of the 5 to 9 Society and former CPO at Knix, is here to give you her expertise. We're talking about walking into a company with no HR infrastructure, a CEO whose behavior made her want to run back to corporate, working 100 hours a week until her hair (literally) started falling out, and somehow still coming out the other side with more love for startups than ever. 00:00:00 - Intro 00:02:01 - Something Christine Believed About Work That She Had to Unlearn 00:08:26 - What Stepping Into a Startup Role Felt like Vs The Expectation of It 00:21:01 - The Important Role of HR in Startups 00:35:18 - Picking Up on Signs of Burnout 00:40:40 - Startup Culture and Its Demands 00:49:10 - Creating a Life and Identity Outside of Work 00:55:11 - Christine's Advice For Someone New to The Startup World --- The Predictive Index behavioral assessment reveals how people work, think, and thrive—so teams can understand each other better and perform at their best. Private markets have become an increasingly important part of how large institutional investors build diversified portfolios—but they're also an area that can feel complex and, at times, misunderstood. At their core, private markets include investments that aren't traded on public exchanges — meaning they're less liquid and have historically offered investors additional return potential in exchange for that trade-off. Within this space, two key areas stand out: private equity, which involves investing in the ownership of private companies, and private credit, which focuses on lending to those companies. Private credit now plays a critical role in financing businesses of all sizes, offering flexible, customized solutions that often aren't available in public markets. But with that growth has come increased scrutiny. Recent headlines have raised concerns about credit quality, liquidity, and how these investments might perform if economic conditions weaken. So, what's really happening beneath the surface—and how should long-term investors think about the risks and opportunities? For the Wisconsin Retirement System, private credit is one part of a broader, diversified Core Fund. In this episode, we'll break down how private credit works, why companies choose it, and how SWIB approaches investing in this space with a long-term perspective. In this episode of The SWIB Podcast, senior portfolio managers Beth Holzberger and Lin Maung will help unpack the evolution of private credit, address some of the concerns making headlines, and explain how these investments contribute to the strength of the WRS Core Fund.

Justin sits down with Sanjay Pal, Worldwide VP of Professional Services at IBM, to explore what it really takes to lead services at global scale and why the role is more strategically important now than ever before.Sanjay draws on his journey from Cisco to Accenture to IBM to break down what has fundamentally changed about services delivery in the AI era, and what has stayed the same. He shares how IBM thinks about standardizing delivery across 16 global markets without sacrificing client experience, why the forward-deployed engineer model is gaining momentum, and how professional services leaders need to evolve from deployment executors into trusted business advisors. He also shares a personal story about his father, who wrote 52 books with pen, paper, and a stack of research clippings, and what that means for what's possible now.Chapters[00:00] Intro and Sanjay's Path to IBM [02:33] What's Changed in Services, and What Hasn't [05:00] How AI Amplifies Delivery Without Replacing Judgment [08:01] Standardization vs. Customization at Global Scale [10:38] The Evolving Role of the Services Leader [12:44] Forward-Deployed Engineers and Leading with Services [15:02] Breaking Down Silos Across Pre-Sales, Implementation, and Post-Sales [16:05] What's Top of Mind Heading into 2026
In this introductory lesson, Pastor Dale discusses the importance role of faith in the life of the believer. Biblical faith cannot be overemphasized, as it is forms the foundation of our salvation, creates the framework for our identity in Christ, and empowers us to walk victoriously in the plan and provision of God. Faith is not passive, nor is it positive thinking or simply a feeling. Faith is a lifestyle and a spiritual force that always has manifestation as its goal, and we must be cautious to not allow shortcomings to hinder us from receiving the fullness of our victory. As believers, we are not called to be short distance sprinters or to settle with only a measure. We are called to run with endurance and WIN.

Some view religion as a vital source of moral guidance, community, and meaning, while others argue that secular ethics, reason, and shared human values are sufficient foundations for a meaningful life.We explore whether religious institutions continue to provide social cohesion or whether, in an increasingly pluralistic world, they risk reinforcing division. We debate if and how faith offers forms of comfort and purpose that science and rational inquiry cannot address. Our discussion also addresses the friction between religious tradition and contemporary values. Can ancient texts meaningfully inform modern ethical challenges, or do they impose constraints that no longer align with individual freedom? We engage directly with difficult questions around indoctrination and education, and whether raising children within a religious framework is best understood as a gift of identity or an unwelcome imposition.

It was our pleasure to welcome back our good friend Roger Pielke Jr., Author of The Honest Broker on Substack and Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, for an insightful discussion on the U.S. Department of Energy's climate risk assessment report on the impacts of greenhouse gas emissions (linked here). Roger is a Professor Emeritus in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he previously served as a professor in the Environmental Studies department for over 23 years. His research focuses on science and technology policy, the politicization of science, government science advice, and energy and climate. The Honest Broker reaches more than 36,000 subscribers in over 160 countries. We always value Roger's perspective on the evolving climate policy and energy landscape and were thrilled to visit with him. In our conversation, Roger provides context for the DOE report, including the history of U.S. climate regulation and key milestones such as the Clean Air Act, Massachusetts v. EPA classifying CO₂ as a pollutant, and the endangerment finding under the Obama Administration. He outlines both the constructive discussions and contentious debates the report sparked as well as challenges in climate science discourse where debate is polarized along partisan lines and questions or alternative views are often penalized. We discuss energy demand beyond Western-centric perspectives and the importance of objective, fact-based discussion in balancing emissions reduction goals with realistic energy needs and technological development. Roger shares his perspective on the political implications of the DOE report, including how it could influence the endangerment finding, the low scientific bar required under the Clean Air Act, the need to democratize climate science for broader public understanding, the importance of constructive debate among experts, the risk of overly aggressive emissions policies on energy costs and reliability, and the necessity of balancing climate action with political and economic realities. We explore how rising energy demand drives innovation, the actual outcomes of climate policies versus their intended goals, how the 2009 endangerment finding is outdated and needs updating to reflect current science, Roger's assessment of the strengths and criticisms of the DOE report, and his recent attendance at the Abundance Conference, where he observed bipartisan engagement and discussions on expanding access to energy and improving living standards. We cover the American Enterprise Institute's nonpartisan mission and focus areas including technology, science, energy, and higher education, the value of fostering “intellectual hospitality,” the role of experts in democracy, the importance of leadership in preserving institutional integrity, the need for healthier, fact-based discussions on climate and policy, and much more. We greatly appreciate Roger for joining and sharing his expertise and insights with us all. As you'll hear, we reference a few items in the discussion. Steven Koonin's opinion piece published Monday in the WSJ is linked here. Roger's post, “What is the Scientific Threshold for GHG Endangerment?” is linked here and his piece on the climate report titled “A Red Team Climate Report: To correct course, we need open, respectful and informed debate” is linked here. The tourism sector may play an increasingly important role in supporting long-term economic growth. That's according to the latest SME Monitor published today by Banking and Payments Federation of Ireland. Brian Hayes, Chief Executive of the BPFI, says the tourism sector could help to keep employment high... Alan has been speaking about this with Mark Nolan, President of the Shannon Chamber, former managing director of Dromoland Castle Hotel. Alan first asked Mark if he thought the tourism sector can realistically compensate for potential economic hits to high-value industries like medical and pharma, especially in terms of jobs and wages... To explore this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Owner at Doolin Inn, Anthony Moloney. Photo(C): studioroman via canva

00:46 The role of skull bone marrow in ageingDuring ageing, bone marrow in the skull becomes an increasingly important site of blood-cell production. This is in stark contrast to most bones where the ability of marrow to make blood and immune cells declines. Studies in mice and humans showed that ageing results in skull bone-marrow expanding, and in mice this marrow was more resistant to inflammation and other hallmarks of ageing. The team behind the work hope by understanding this process better it may be possible to help organs become more resistant to ageing.Research Article: Koh et al.08:56 Research HighlightsElderly big brown bats show remarkable resistance to age-related hearing loss, and why search-engine algorithms may not be the main driver steering people towards misinformation.Research Highlight: No hearing aids needed: bats' ears stay keen well into old ageResearch Highlight: Don't blame search engines for sending users to unreliable sites11:38 How to make lead a useful material to date the Solar SystemResearchers have overcome a major hurdle preventing the radioactive isotope lead-205 from being used as a ‘clock' to date the age of the Solar System. 205Pb is made in some stars and thanks to its half life of around 17 million years has been proposed as a potential way to date ancient astronomical processes. However, exactly how much 205Pb can escape a star were unclear, limiting its dating potential. Now, researchers have mimicked the conditions seen in stars to pin down how much 205Pb can escape into space, paving the way for its use as a clock.Research Article: Leckenby et al.19:51 Briefing ChatHow millions of Android smartphones were used to map the Earth's ionosphere, and the ethical implications of a virologist who treated her own cancer.Nature: Google uses millions of smartphones to map the ionosphereNature: This scientist treated her own cancer with viruses she grew in the labSubscribe to Nature Briefing, an unmissable daily round-up of science news, opinion and analysis free in your inbox every weekday. In his October 2021 general conference talk President Ballard expressed, “We must always remember that our true happiness depends upon our relationship with God, with Jesus Christ, and with each other.” How do we build and shape these relationships? In this episode assistant professor of Church history and doctrine Brian Mead discusses his article “The Important Role of Relationships in Our Heavenly Father's Plan of Salvation.” Dr. Mead defines doctrinal and relational approaches to the Plan of Salvation and examines how they strengthen our understanding of eternal relationships. Further, he addresses how using a relational approach to teach the Plan of Salvation aids in answering a number of why questions: Why do we need a mortal experience? Why must we repent? Why do we need a Savior? Such an approach builds upon our personal understanding and connections to our Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, family, and others.
