A very detailed geek out.   SteelShad Bottom Blade-a new twist on the old Silver Buddy-bass of all species, black bass or temperate bass will pick a blade bait laying flat on the bottom.  It is a good lure for when baitfish like shad are experiencing cold shock die off or when white bass and so forth are smashing baitfish on the surface, a lot of crippled shad or shad parts drift down to the bottom.  But to mimic a feeding shad SteelShad has a stand up version of their blade bait. The lure body can swing up and down within the head weight thus standing up on the bottom like a feeding baitfish. Quick throw back to Fishing Austin and Central Texas-Aaron's spots are his favorite wades. A boat can change the game (as he mentions).  John Geirach in his 1994 book Dances with Trout describes a good paddle in his little canoe where he has a fine time catching bass and such back in the days before the surge.  Both the rivers he diddles around on are in Aaron's book (Nueces and Guadalupe) The Show-We are going to monthly.  We cannot worry about what other podcasts do or what the pundits and experts say is necessary to have a good podcast.  That's fine for people who want to follow formulas that make money and content is dictated by what sells.  We could do an a-hole POV podcast like that guy joe rogaine or yet another crime podcast but we are hardcore indie. And we are about fish fishing and eating fish.  We do not follow any rules and never have.  We do not have a narrow niche, we do not have a regular format (we do have a loose framework currently) and try as we might we do not have consistent release dates scheduled precisely.  We are punk rock and while our production limitations are not the result of chemicals and ego they are the result of raising families, founding businesses, doing research and dividing our creativity and energy as best we can over any number of projects, in other words doing our thing.  And Fish Nerds is one of our things.  And so it survives and we keep casting pod and rod! There are times when we are either planning your podcast, launching it, or you're just trying to get a larger audience. I see people in groups, websites, and meetups where they are stuck in the decision-making process. Today we are going to walk through the basic steps, and look at where and why people get stuck.   Because of My Podcast: Clay Groves is Now the Host of the Morning Radio Show and a Program Director Clay is the man behind the Fish Nerds podcast and because of his podcast he was first selected to be the man behind the scenes who does the editing, some voice-over at a station. That lead to him filling in on the weekends which lead to him NOW being the Morning Radio Show host AND Program Director. HOW COOL?  Check out Clay at www.fishnerds.com  The Basics of Making a Decision In doing some research and reading a bunch of articles you can boil decision-making down to about 5-10 steps. These are: Step 1: Identify your goal Step 2: Gather information for weighing your options Step 3: Consider the Consequences Step 4. Make the Decision Step 5. Evaluation the decision Full episodes notes at www.schoolofpodcasting.com/775 Mistakes People Make When Making A Decisions Zero Research There are some shows that have done zero research and end up naming their show the same as MANY other shows (search for outside the box in your favorite app).  Lack of Qualified Advice Not having an expert or someone who has done what you're doing. My ex-wife was a nurse and when I was given the decision of "How do you want your Dad to die, slow or fast?" She asked for a surgical consult. I didn't even know what a surgical consult was, but we did one and it added about five more years to my Dad's life.  Paralysis By Analysis There is a Ted Talk by Sheena Lyengar who is a blind psycho economist who specializing in decision making They had 348 different kinds of jam. We set up a little tasting booth right near the entrance of the store. We there put out six different flavors of jam or 24 different flavors of jam, and we looked at two things: First, in which case were people more likely to stop, sample some jam? More people stopped when there were 24, about 60 percent, than when there were six, about 40 percent. The next thing we looked at is in which case were people more likely to buy a jar of jam. Now we see the opposite effect. Of the people who stopped when there were 24, only three percent of them actually bought a jar of jam. Of the people who stopped when there were six, well now we saw that 30 percent of them actually bought a jar of jam. So when you do some research and bounce it off someone who you feel provides trustworthy advice, you're ready to move to on to looking at the consequences. Fear of Consequences You think there is an A U D I E N C E listening when you first start (there isn't). Then a few months later you have fear because people ARE listening. Remember no one will punch you in the face. You can change things later. It's the first episode of the years and in the same that I have the last episode of the year look at why people listen, today we talk about how to start. Ten Years ago I did an episode called "27 steps to launch a podcast and today I am going to update it. As you might imagine things have changed in 10 years. If you already have a podcast I have some items for you. Over the years there have been some ingredients of podcasting that we know add value, but like any recipe, if you use an ingredient in the wrong way you can ruin the final product. Keep it Real I hear the phrase, "Keep it real." This should stay authentic. You should be talking from your heart and your beliefs. Don't say what people want to hear because it's popular, if your opinion differs let's hear it. Let's also hear why you believe those thoughts. We just might learn something. How this phrase is abused is when "keeping it real" means I'm not going to edit my podcast at all. There are editors who work in movies, television, books, magazines, and newspapers. However, your podcast is perfect with no room for improvement. There is always room for improvement. I read on Facebook where someone took 26 minutes to answer ONE question. The final version of the podcast had that answer trimmed to four minutes. Fishing is Boring I haven't fished in 20 years. If you're into fishing check out the Fish Nerds show with Clay Groves. For me, half the fun was getting to play with a boat and get out on a lake. In some cases, if the boat had a motor it was even more fun. Then you bait your hook, throw your line in and wait. Then you wait some more. This part of fishing is really boring. Every time I hear someone start off an interview with "Tell me a little bit about yourself," the person is fishing. They are listening just like watching their bobber float on the lake, looking for a nibble. Reeling in a Fish is Exciting I don't watch fishing on TV, but if I'm clicking through the channels and a fishing show is on, they don't show two people in a boat watching their bobber. They show someone standing up with excitement as they have caught a great fish and they are bringing it into the boat. When you have a guest and you find something that YOU KNOW is going to RESONATE with your audience that's exciting and in the same the fisherman does everything they can to get the fish into the boat, you do everything you can to get that content into your recording. Stories are Great Half the time we ask, "tell me a little bit about yourself" we are fishing for a story. Somehow we are lead to believe that knowing someone's back story is going to help us. If I started my podcast with "Today we are going to interview Gern Blanston who has a proven strategy of growing your audience by 200%, but first, let's find out what his parents did for a living..." you would be yelling at your device to get to the good stuff. Stories are great when someone shares a story that we can learn from, or it makes you laugh, cry, think, groan, or educates us or entertains us. When I was sixteen years one night I was trying to look cool in front of a girl and climbed a sign at the front of the mall that showed the names of the movies in its three theaters. We figured out that we could change the title "Desperately Seeking Susan" to Desperately Sucking Suzan. As I was a hard rock fan, I was not a fan of Madonna and thought this would be hilarious. It took some effort to get up there, and once up there changing letters was not as easy as it looked. In the end, the sign read Desperately Seeting Susan. Is this real? Yes. Is it a story? Yes. Does it help you with your podcast? No. Just because something is real and it's a story, doesn't mean it's good. It might be really boring. The story of Glenn the Geek from the Horse Radio Network asking to get a booth at the largest Horsing Event was a great story as it has helped many people grow their podcast. Fishing Takes Patience - And We Live in a Microwave Society People want good stuff. They want the band whose name is on the ticket (skip the warm-up act). GET TO THE GOOD STUFF. Tell a four-year-old kid you brought them candy and then tell them they first have to listen to you recite some Edgar Allen Poe. They will start screaming, "GIVE ME THE CANDY." Netflix just added the ability to speed up movies. If you are watching a series on Netflix, at the end when you click "Go to next episode" it skips the end credits of the current episode and in intro of the next episode. It gets right to the good stuff. Conversations Are Great This is another thing I hear that is taken out of context. What you want to avoid is an interrogation if you are interviewing someone. Just because something is done in a conversational style does not mean it's not boring. All You Need is Consistency People are taking the word consistency and spinning it as "If I just release a show on a consistent basis, I will have success." I see people in Facebook groups saying things like, "I've been podcasting for seven months on a weekly basis, why aren't my numbers higher?" They feel consistency in publishing is the key. It is important. When you publish on a regular, predictable basis, you become part of their routine. HOWEVER: What really matters is consistency in delivering value. I remember Jason Sudekis from Saturday Night Live. Troy Heinritz from the blacklist exposed told me the show LEd Lasso on HBO was really good (notice word of mouth) and so I check it out and Troy was right. I then saw Jason had a movie called Kodachrome on Netflix. The movie was predictable, but again the acting of Jason Sudekis was impressive. Consequently, I would watch another Jason Sudekis movies because he was in it. The same goes for the actor Paul Giamatti who I originally saw in Howard Stern's private parts. He is an amazing actor. I love John Cusak movies from the '80s. I loved behind John Malcovich cause it was so outside the box. Something happened and John's movies started being more and more "Meh" and while I'm still a fan, it's not automatic that I will watch a movie because John is in it. When it comes to with consistency it boils down to this, I would rather have a GREAT episode one day late, instead of a "Meh" episode on time. Hey Weight Loss Nation! www.TheWeightLossNation.com Today I'm talking FISH. Why am I talking about fish? Because, I'm not very fond of eating fish and I certainly don't know how to cook it right! I AM one of America's Worst Cooks and I really want to be on that show! If you know someone affiliated with America's Worst Cooks show, let me know! I want to learn how to cook! I want to LIVE healthier! Living a Healthy Lifestyle is a bit difficult when you are NOT a good cook! Then.....I really don't know what other types of fish to eat. I primarily eat Tuna Fish, Cod, Haddock, Shrimp and Scallops. Once in while I'll eat Salmon at a restaurant that I know has Wild Caught Salmon AND prepares it REALLY Well. Let's face it! Fish is kinda gross! The whole, smelly, scaly, EYES looking at you thing, is nasty. I know you can walk into a grocery store and just buy it cut up and ready to cook....... but, when you don't know how that kind of fish will taste, how to actually cook it properly.....and ......MOST Importantly......WHERE did that fish come from?  It's easier to just walk over and pick up some grass fed beef or organic chicken. Today, I found THE "Fish Nerd," who will educate you on WHAT fish to eat, and help you understand WHERE that fish came from! Clay Groves hosts and produces the "Fish Nerds" Podcast. Clay lives in the beautiful White Mountains area of New Hampshire. He LOVES fishing, EATING Fish and he is passionate about Sustainable Development. I didn't know what that meant either, Clay advised me Sustainable Development is being responsible with developing our economy without depleting our natural resources. In this case.....FISH! Clay states that ALL Fish is good for you.......as long as you know the fish came right out of the ocean, lake or river. Most restaurants and grocery stores get their fish from "Fish Farms." Fish Farms are where fish are raised in enclosures to be sold as food. It is the fastest growing area of animal food production. Today, almost HALF the fish consumed around the world, are raised in these artificial environments. The most Commonly farmed species include salmon, tuna, cod, trout and halibut.  Remember Nation.......My Motto is: "If it grows out of the ground, hangs from a tree, roams the Earth, flies in the sky or SWIMS in the ocean...Eat it!" A fish that is forced to swim in an artificial environment is NOT part of my motto or Weight Loss Nation's mission. You have to know WHERE your fish is coming from! Clay advises you to look on labels. It must say "Wild Caught" to be sustainable. Otherwise......it most likely grew in one of these artificial fish farms! Clay is extremely knowledgeable, and says that ALL fish, mollusks and living creatures in the sea are good for you, if prepared properly.  There are "poisonous" fish and sea creatures out there! An example would be the "Puffer Fish." Clay Groves is obsessed with fish and best known for a quest (with former host Dave Kellam) in 2011 to catch and eat every kind of freshwater fish in New Hampshire. After catching and eating 48 species of fish and ending the epic quest, he could not stop talking about the adventures or the fishy people met along the way. Thus, the podcast was born.  The style has been described as a cross between NPR’s Car Talk and the Tonight Show Night (Fallon, not Leno). The podcast is just about to have it's fifth birthday with the recording of the 200th episode scheduled for memorial day. The Fish Nerds have been featured on National Public Radio, Boston Public Radio, New Hampshire Public Radio and nearly every news outlet in New Hampshire. In addition Clay is a nationally recognized speaker who has spoken at the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, on stage at WGBH Boston and at the Boston Symphony. When Clay is not podcasting he writes grants to fund afterschool programming and runs a Fishing Guide Service.

Welcome to episode 604 of the School of Podcasting Listen here Update on the PreSonus StudioLive AR12 USB Mixer The last episode I explained how I had purchased at PreSonus StudioLive AR12 USB Mixer. It's not cheap ($499) but there is an AR8 that is $150 ($350) less. The problem I had was when I record to the built-in SD card, there was a very faint (but noticeable) high pitch whine. In working with tech support that has been resolved and after updating the driver, it seems to have quit freezing up the audio on my computer. All in all, I'm happy with it. This is partially due to me having a DBX 286 which adds extra gain. I am using an Electrovice RE320, and it just seemed odd that I needed to really turn every (almost) all the way up to get things to peak. The fact that these units have built-in SD records can save you from buying a Zoom H1 (or any portable recorder) to get the recording off the computer. The Zoom H1 is typically around $100. Look for the price of the Zoom H1 to go down (more on that later) as they just announced a new Zoom H1n which will be available soon (that unit is geared a bit more towards musicians) Sponsor: Podcast Movement I am so looking forward to Podcast Movement. This is the largest Podcast Event that is solely geared toward podcasting. Being face to face with people is the best way to grow your network, and take advantage of all the opportunities. Starting a podcast is a great way to build your network, and coming to an event is like building your network on steroids. I got to talk to Marc Maron a couple of years ago. Jeff is been nominated five times for a podcast award and comes highly recommended by some friends. I started listening to his podcast and soon bought his book the 5 AM Miracle on Audible (also available on Amazon) How long did it take him to get his sponsor The difference between his blog audience vs his podcast audience What goes into making an episode How does he pick his subjects Does he make more money selling his own products or sponsorship? Jeff shares how his podcast brought him a book publisher - TWICE Does Jeff have any radio experience? How Jeff inspired his mail carrier who is now a giant fan of his show Why he decided to kill his first podcast What got him hooked on his subject Does he really get up at 5 AM? Jeff's Tips on Getting Focused A simple tip for starting your day in the right direction What is the difference between his first book the 5 AM Miracle and his new Book The Free Time Formula How does he achieve work/life balance? What if you don't have time to write all this stuff down? How do you make yourself go to bed? Jeff has been using wavve to share his podcast, but that's not the thing that's been delivering more listeners How did he approach popular websites to get his show mentioned? Jeff has a TON of bonus content for those that pre-order his book at his website His membership portal is built in Digital Access Pass and Learn Dash What is his favorite Todo List Task Manage? Why Getting Organized is Important It only makes sense to go fast when you are headed in the right direction. For me, being somewhat A.D.D. I get new ideas all the time. If you walk into my kitchen, you will find the cabinets open as I have moved on to my next task (eating ) without completing the last 1% of the previous project (closing) so I'm taking some of this year to get more focused, identify what is important to me, and then put the gas pedal down so I'm going fast, in the right direction. My favorite tools are Todist and Evernote. I'm currently taking a class on getting the most out of Todoist and Evernote. Check out Carl Pullein's channel on YouTube For learning how to use these tools. How did I learn about his channel and content? I told someone I was listening to Jeff's book, and he had been watching Carl's videos. Tell people what you are up to, they may have some great insights. My favorite example of Todoist is I can read an email and turn it into a to an item. For example, we previously had an episode with Clay Groves from Fishnerds.com on the show and he was talking about doing appearances. Another listener (who asked to be nameless) wrote in that "When I was in radio, the standard appearance rate was $250 an hour and you couldn't book talent for less than 2 hours. When I got my first speaking contract (for a very large health company) it was $750 for a half day, $1350 for a full day, with expenses and transportation covered. These rates are about 5 years old and may not apply to everyone.. but in case you were wondering.. that's one perspective." I've had that as a "to do" item and when I went into Todoist, I clicked a link and it took me to the actual email in Gmail.  Great Advice on Growing Your Podcast Audience and Community Danny Pena has been on this show (amazing interview). He has a documentary coming out in February as he celebrates 13 years in podcast. He appeared on one my favorite shows about podcasting called the New Media Show with Todd Cochrane and Rob Greenlee. It's definitely worth a listen Mentioned In this Podcast Jeff Sanders Website Red Podcast The 5 AM Miracle Book and 5 AM Miracle Podcast Free Time Formula wavve  audio sharing tool Todist and Evernote New Media Show

Welcome to the Fish Nerds I’m Clay Groves, Licensed NH Fishing Guide This episode is the fourth in our series on how to become a fishing guide. I am happy to bring you on my journey into making a living (at least partially) in the fishing industry. This episode is brought to you by our friends at NH Outdoor Learning Center, they offer tons of great outdoor certifications and I went to guide school with them. Scott Jackson really understands this business and without his help I would have had no chance of becoming a fishing guide. We originally were going to make this a simple four part series, but as I dig into this material and grow the business I am finding that it’s much more difficult than I could have imagined. Upcoming ideas for future episodes in this series, the expenses of guiding, becoming a pro-staff, sponsorship, marketing and the one that surprised me most, the Politics of guiding. First up my first trip I arrived to the fishing spot a half hour before my client. People were in the spot of my first choice, so I moved to plan B. It was January 1 so by law I could not pre-fish the area, in addition, my snowmobile broke down the day before so it was going to be a walk-on ice fishing trip. Did I mention I hate silver lake? My client arrived on time and was super excited to fish, so we headed out. There was nobody else in the area I chose, I chose the spot for two reasons, 1- Easy Parking and 2 5 years ago I saw a trout on an underwater camera, my hopes were not high and I informed my client we were not going to catch much, did I mention I hate silver lake? Here is Mike’s first impression Confidence grows with experience, we took a break to collect more audio, after this my equipment froze so I had to stop recording. All in all it was a good day, I counted 9 lakers for Mike and a few for myself, Mike called in to recap. BTW I can’t begin to thank Mike Enough, it means a lot to me that he wanted to be my first client. With my confidence High, Fish Nerds fly fishing correspondent and my friend Rich Collins came out with me. Rich is my banana, he’s full of bad luck, so we chatted while my recording equipment failed... the buzzing noise you hear in the background is my fish finder. Recently we had some protesters or I should say protester, you’ll hear my Father-in Law Scott call in to talk about our protestor. Then our recording equipment failed, you will hear more from RIch in the future. Part of being a guide is doing fishing seminars, I have been doing these for years (since 2011) so I did one for the Conway Public Library, Vinnie Joined me, once he is licensed he will be my partner in the Guide Service. We won’t make you listen to the whole thing. I booked 2 trips from the seminar, 18 people attended and the feedback we got was positive except for one. Someone said the children were distracting (My kids!) Welcome to the Fish Nerds I’m Clay Groves, Licensed NH Fishing Guide This episode is the fourth in our series on how to become a fishing guide. Someone said the children were distracting (My kids!) I got a call from Dave Wilson, who is has invented a new device call the Pocket Rod Res, he asked to meet me at a coffee shop to show off his new invention. https://pocketrodrest.com/ I have a handful on these Pocket Rod Rest to give away. Welcome to the Fish Nerds, it’s a celebration of Fish Fishing and Eating fish I’m Clay Groves, Licensed NH Fishing Guide Today’s episode is sponsored by the NH Outdoor Learning Center http://www.nhoutdoorlearning.com/ this is where I went to gudie school. Scott Jackson runs a great program that will teach you everything you need to know to pass the NH Guide Test... I doubt I could have passed the test without taking the course. This is the second part in our series on becoming a fishing guide. As I was traveling around meeting guides, I was struck by how competent and confident they all are. The only way to gain that level of confidence is by making mistakes. So I begged the question, what do you consider a bad day with clients. I’ve collected three stories or you, FIrst Up, we have Tim Moore, Tim Moore is a licensed NH guide and one of the hardest working guys I know. For more information on Tim head to www.timmooreoutdoors.com I caught up with Tim at a coffee shop in Portsmouth NH Next up, Captain Shawn Tibbetts, Captain shawn runs a tune/shark charter out of Saco MAine. Shawn has taught me a ton about fishing for sharks, cussing like a sailor and kissing other guys... I don’t want to talk about that! You can find the good captain at www.mainetunafishing.com We recorded this segment on top of a Mountain in North Conway NH Twin Maple Outdoors.com Richard Yvone owner of Twin Maple Outdoors checked in with his guide disaster story. After hearing this I would definitely trust Richard to guide me in the wilds of Maine.. If you are in the Highlands of ME you should hire Richard, you can even book his lodge! https://twinmapleoutdoors.com/ I managed to get him out of the woods and on the phone. FISH IN THE NEWS I love Fish IN the News http://www.startribune.com/hudson-wis-entrepreneur-makes-slick-pitch-on-shark-tank/402770536/ Hudson, Wis., entrepreneur wows 'Shark Tank' Vance Zahorski, an avid fisherman, nets $120,000 investment on show. He entered the infamous “Shark Tank” seeking a $120,000 return for 20 percent of his company, but gave up 33 percent to seal the deal. While other Sharks showed interest in the company, Daymond John, the multimillionaire behind FUBU, was the only one to make a formal offer after seeing the device, marketed as the “ultimate fishing essential” on the company’s website. The exposure is a huge victory for the start-up that Zahorski founded on a whim in 2013. He quit his six-figure salary sales job at an appliance company in Arizona, sold his prized fishing boat and the dream home he helped build with his bare hands, then moved back to his hometown in western Wisconsin with his wife and two young daughters. A prototype made of welding putty and a dental floss cutter would explode into a booming business. Less than two years after launching, the rings now sell in hundreds of independent bait and tackle shops in eight different countries. When Zahorski realized the rings also cut thread and yarn, the products were stocked in quilting stores. It retails for $12. There will be even more to be thankful for this year. I caught up with Vance over skype after the show aired... Captain Shawn Tibbetts is back with his segment Vets in the News, the Fish Nerds want to pay tribute to vets who have protected our free speech and allowed us to grow into this Fish Nerd Media Empire. So that is it. you have listen to a few of Fish Nerds when you could have been fishing, We’d like to thank our families for supporting us while we podcast, go on fishing Quests and do all sorts of silly things that nerds do.
