Send us Fan MailThe Executive Director of the Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (ANDVSA) is Brenda Stanfill. She moved to Fairbanks from Utah when she was 16 years old as a newlywed. Within a few years of arriving she had two children and realized that she had to escape her abusive marriage. It was that experience surviving her own domestic violence that led to a lifetime of advocacy, including 25 years as executive director of the Interior Alaska Center for Non-Violent Living where she supported survivors across Interior Alaska. Although we discuss Brenda's own story, we also discuss Virginia Giuffre, a victim of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, whose book Nobody's Girl was published after her death by suicide in 2025. Visit ANDVSA.org for resources regarding sexual assault and domestic violence. If you are thinking of taking your own life, Call 988.
TODAY on the GWA podcast: curator SONNET STANFILL on ELSA SCHIAPARELLI! Sonnet is the Senior Curator of Fashion at the V&A, where she has worked since 1999. Stanfill has curated numerous highly acclaimed exhibitions, such as New York Fashion Now, Ballgowns: British Glamour since 1950, and the landmark The Glamour of Italian Fashion (2014), which traveled to several museums across the US. She has published and lectured widely on various aspects of fashion design and holds an MA in the history of dress. But the reason why we are speaking with her today is because she has just curated the monumental exhibition, Elsa Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art at the V&A, which charts the fearless life and daring work of the artist, designer, surrealist, influencer and general pioneer of who the modern woman was and what she could be. A creator of surrealist wonderlands with her fantastical gowns with floating eyes, lips, and lobsters, woven jackets embellished with astrological symbolism and mirrors inspired by Versailles, plus carrot-shaped buttons with embroidered cauliflowers, Schiaparelli – who also made jewellery and perfumes and wrote extensively – was one of the most inventive people of the 20th century. Born in Rome in 1890, she fled her conservative life for London, New York, and later Paris, where she befriended the surrealists and built a business on a scale hardly any woman had done before. This one's for you who's longing to be known. Today, we are joined by dear friends of The Grove— Rachel Baldwin, Kerri Stanfill, and Susan Robinson— for a vulnerable conversation about what it really means to be seen, loved, and surrounded by a real community. But where do we begin? How do we create a space where people feel safe to be known — not only when we win, but also when we ache?Through wisdom and practical encouragement, Rachel, Kerri, and Susan invite us to go first — in vulnerability, in confession, in reaching out, in showing up. They discuss the power of presence, the courage it takes to initiate, and why we don't have to have it all together to start forming or maintaining our meaningful relationships. For the woman longing for deeper friendship but unsure where to begin, this episode is filled with grace and guidance for taking that first brave step.Whether you're flourishing in community or feeling forgotten on the sidelines, you'll leave this conversation reminded that you're not alone.
This episode was fun and exciting with the Stanfill's, Kevin and Shelbi. They discussed Elder Bednar's talk, "In the Space of Not Many Years". In their latest book, Fandom is Ugly: Networked Harassment in Participatory Culture (NYU Press, 2024), Mel Stafill highlights the importance of considering contemporary public culture through the lens of fan studies The Gamergate harassment campaign of women in video games, the “Unite the Right” rally where hundreds of Confederate monument supporters cried out racist and antisemitic slurs in Charlottesville, and the targeted racist and sexist harassment of Star Wars' Asian American actress Kelly Marie Tran all have one thing in common: they demonstrate the collective power and underlying ugliness of fandoms. These fans might feel victimized or betrayed by the content they've intertwined with their own identities, or they may simply feel that they're speaking truth to power. Regardless, by connecting via social media, they can unleash enormous amounts of hate, which often results in severe real-world consequences. Fandom Is Ugly argues that reactionary politics and media fandoms go hand in hand, and to understand one, we need to understand the other. Stanfill pushes back on two mainstream assumptions: that media and the pleasure of consumption are frivolous and unworthy of study, and that fandoms are inherently progressive. Drawing on a corpus of angry social media posts, Fandom Is Ugly finds that ugly moments happen when deep emotional attachments collide with social structures and situations that have been misunderstood. By holistically examining the forms of ugly fandom in cases that touch upon race, gender, and sexuality, Fandom Is Ugly produces a comprehensive theory of the negative sides of fan attachments. In November 2022, esteemed Passion worship leader Kristian Stanfill rocked the faith world with a simple post on Instagram: “I am 2 years sober today.”Kristian has been appropriately protective of his journey through addiction and into sobriety. As the "Twitter Files" begin to expose the influence of big tech (and big government) on social media, Trish sits down with one of the original developers of the so-called "artificial intelligence" or "AI" space to discuss what's really at stake. Software developer turned science fiction novelist Craig W. Stanfill tells Trish that, in the wrong hands, AI computer code could wreak havoc on a society by limiting what individuals are able to see, hear, read and learn. "We don't live in the real world anymore," warns Stanfill. "We live in the internet. And the internet is highly susceptible to manipulation by companies and by governments." In his newest book, "The Prophecy of the Heron: An AI Dystopia Novel"... the AIs are watching your every move as the line between reality and the virtual world gets increasingly obscure. If that sounds a little like today... that's because algorithmic equations are already constantly limiting what we can see online...and it's setting us up for a major challenge that politicians don't yet understand. "The ultimate battlefield is the battle over reality," Stanfill cautions, "and there is a war raging right now over what is reality." The interview being at 4:43 in the podcast. Tom Stanfill is the Co-Founder and CEO of ASLAN Training and the author of UnReceptive. A customer's willingness to listen matters more than your ability to communicate. Tom discusses the concept of receptivity and how unreceptive buyers refuse to be influenced by sellers. Tom digs into identifying emotionally closed customers and honing skills beyond playbooks and strategies to influence a customer's willingness to listen. Andy also puts a spotlight on many sellers' reliance on top of funnel and a rather lazy acceptance of low rin rates. HIGHLIGHTS Find common ground in the customer's whiteboard Observing a shift from salesy to authentic sales behavior Influence a customer's willingness to listen Low win rates: Product-market fit or bad selling? QUOTES Persuading an emotionally-closed person will backfire - Tom: "It comes from this principle that I call the Cornerstone Principle because it's a cornerstone of everything we teach is that, when someone's emotionally closed, the more you try to persuade them, the more closed they become." Start a conversation based on the customer's whiteboard - Tom: "Most people really do have a whiteboard. If they don't, metaphorically, they have a whiteboard and the whiteboard is real simple. They want something. Everybody wants something, and then they have a plan to get there. Everybody. And so, if I start with what's on their whiteboard, it always captivates their attention." Helping customers authentically creates a competitive advantage - Tom: "Drop the rope. Don't try to manipulate people and control them because control's just an illusion, and people will respond. And that is a competitive advantage that you will have that will separate you from the 98 other people that are sending the same emails and the same LinkedIn requests and the same message over and over again."
