We wanted her to listen to Ivy Unleashed in hopes that it would inspire her to recognize her worth, make a decision, and take messy, imperfect action toward better health and vitality. Dreams. Come. True. Kiersten Wickenhauser is a wife and mother of 2 who struggled to know what made her happy. Her loving and giving heart continually put her in a position where she was always last, catering to the happiness of everyone else. After diving into her mental health and upleveling her mindset, she knew there was a missing piece- the mind/body connection. Tune in to hear how Kiersten made the decision to join MOVE and the revelations she's had in the last year and half, since taking the leap and saying YES to herself.#wellnessforwomen #mindbodyconnection #athomeworkouts #strengthtraining #yogaSupport the show
Do you remember your first year as a college student? Were you nervous, scared, excited, lonely, happy, sad? Maybe you felt all of these emotions, which is a lot for anyone to take on. Add to that figuring out your class schedule, where things are on your campus, the dialogue of instructors using words you've never heard before. Today, we're going to focus on how you can continue to support first-year students in their educational journey. We'll talk about being purposeful in your course design from studying habits to evaluations, and then we'll talk about discussion board labs for first-year students to help them engage in discussion and increase their confidence in their abilities. Lastly, we encourage you to ask your students: What's working well and what do we need to change? What do we need to improve upon? How can we continue to better meet what you need? These questions and tactics can help your first-year students become more successful and confident.Recommended resources:20-Minute Mentor: How Do I Create a Class that Supports First-Year Students?20-Minute Mentor: How Can I Use the Discussion Board to Stimulate Engagement and Build Confidence for First-Year Students?Magna Seminar: Practical Ways to Support First-Generation College Students in the College Classroom
This week on AZAAZ we answered: ❓The Questions❓
Issues of equity in mathematics classrooms existed prior to COVID-19. For many students, however, meaningful participation in mathematical discussions became nearly impossible in online settings during the pandemic. In this study, we note the diversity in and nature of participation in mathematical discourse in an online course for preservice teachers (PSTs). We investigate the influence of implementing two support strategies for discussion: (a) establishing a “rough-draft/ revision” orientation to mathematical tasks; and (b) providing time and structure (tasks and prompts) in an online discussion board for PSTs to post their initial thoughts, react to peers' solutions, and collectively revise their ideas. In this article, we highlight several benefits of these support strategies to equitable PST participation in a unit on number theory. For example, as compared with oral discussions where only a few PSTs offered their ideas, the written discussion format encouraged every PST to post their ideas. Using a rough-draft/revision stance in the prompts fostered sharing and revealed diverse mathematical approaches, perspectives, and ideas. We argue that giving students opportunities to interact with one another and the mathematics in a variety of ways promotes equitable participation. Despite their universal use in online teaching, online discussions often fall flat. But it doesn't have to be this way. In this episode, we'll discuss how multiple due dates for a discussion can foster thoughtful responses; we'll talk about the importance of using Universal Design for Learning to guide your discussion; we'll discuss the importance of putting yourself in the student perspective when writing your discussion prompts; and finally, we'll go over techniques for fostering a community within your discussion board and class. This episode is all about the discussion board!Recommended Resources:20-Minute Mentor: The Discussion Board and Beyond: How Can I Engage Students Online?20-Minute Mentor: How Do I Create Questions that Stimulate Engaging Conversations in Online Discussion Boards?20-Minute Mentor: What are Three Proven Ways to Manage My Online Discussion Board and Actively Engage Students? This episode is sponsored by the Teaching Professor Online Conference - network from the comfort of your living room.

On this special episode, we discuss the recent Ticketmaster debacle with purchasing Iron Maiden tickets that most people seemed to encounter along with our disgust with the secondary market. Also, a very interesting conversation involving Ozzy/Sabbath, Halford/Priest and Dickinson/Maiden that turns into an additional conversation that includes Ronnie Dio, Joey Belladonna and John Bush of Anthrax as well as Brian Johnson and Bon Scott of AC/DC. Our guest is Dr. Brian Wojciechowski, who practices medical oncology in Delaware County, Pennsylvania at Riddle, Taylor, and Crozer hospitals and also serves as Breastcancer.org's medical adviser. A native of South Philadelphia, he trained at Temple University School of Medicine and Lankenau Medical Center. Dr. Wojciechowski is a sought-after speaker on the topics of medical ethics and the biology of cancer. In one of our Discussion Board threads, people were talking about how a breast cancer is staged, especially if an early-stage cancer spreads or comes back in a place away from the breast. Both the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute websites say that the stage of a breast cancer at first diagnosis doesn't change. So a woman who was diagnosed in 2010 with stage II disease and then had a recurrence in the bones in 2015 would technically be “stage II with metastatic recurrence to bone,” which is not how most people think and talk about metastatic disease. Dr. Wojciechowski reached out to the American Cancer Society about this, and he joins us today to help us all understand this a little bit better. Listen to the podcast to hear Dr. Wojciechowski each explain: the technical differences between stage IV breast cancer and metastatic breast cancer how prognosis differs for someone diagnosed de novo stage IV and someone who was diagnosed stage II with a metastatic recurrence 2 years later how he talks to his patients about a breast cancer's stage Running time: 17:23

This is a quick mini episode to answer the age-old question: should students be able to see what other people have posted before they submit their own response in a discussion board? Or should you require them to post first before viewing other students' responses? You probably won't be shocked to find that I have a strong opinion on this one :).
