When did GREAT BRITAIN become LITTLE BRITAIN? A NATION of WIMPS!

What is the universe actually made of? Particle physicist Theresa Fruth join us at Shirtloads to explore one of science's greatest unsolved mysteries - dark matter! Making up roughly 85% of the universe, yet appearing in none of our known particles, dark matter is invisible, elusive and almost certainly the reason the universe (and us!) exist at all. Theresa and her team are hunting for it anyway. Working 1.2 kilometres underground in a converted gold mine in regional Victoria, they're searching for WIMPs - weakly interacting massive particles - in one of the quietest, most interference-free environments on Earth. The lab is being built out now, and further experiments are on the horizon. We may be closer to one of the biggest discoveries in scientific history than we realise.

The continued failure to detect WIMPs has led to a "Dark Crisis" and more speculative theories. Some scientists suggest dark matter could be primordial black holes formed during the Big Bang, or "fuzzy" dark matter made of extremely light particles. Challenges also arise from "dragonfly galaxies" like Dragonfly 44, which appear to lack dark matter entirely, a problem for both CDM and MOND theories. Physicist Erik Verlinde proposes emergent gravity, where gravity is not a fundamental force but emerges from a deeper level of reality, potentially removing the need for dark matter. Some fresh thinking suggests that MOND and CDM might even work in concert. As the search continues through deep-mine experiments, the ISS, and massive telescopes in Chile, theorists remain at a frontier of trying to explain why 95% of the universe remains invisible. Following Jim Peebles' work on Cold Dark Matter, scientists began searching for the WIMP (Weakly Interacting Massive Particle). These particles are thought to interact through gravity but lack electrical charges or nuclear force interactions, making them invisible. The search has moved from telescopes to particle physics, with researchers at CERN's Large Hadron Collider attempting to create WIMPs through high-energy collisions. Simultaneously, underground laboratories globally search for rare instances where a WIMP might "bump" into an atomic nucleus. Computer simulations like IllustrisTNG are used to model the universe's evolution from the Big Bang. These simulations are highly successful at recreating the current universe only when CDM is included. Nacerían directamente de regiones extremadamente densas del universo primitivo. Estos son los llamados agujeros negros primordiales. Scientists don’t know what dark matter is. But they have some ideas of what it isn’t. And they took a big step in ruling out some possibilities with the release of a study last year. Dark matter produces no energy – the reason it’s described as “dark.” But we know it’s there because its gravity pulls on the visible matter around it. A top candidate is called a WIMP – a weakly interacting massive particle. Although dark matter almost never interacts with normal matter, it might occasionally do so – ramming into the nucleus of a normal atom. That would produce a tiny spark of light, which detectors might see. One experiment is LUX-ZEPLIN. It’s in a former gold mine, almost a mile below the town of Lead, South Dakota. The rock above it blocks other types of particles from reaching the experiment. Its detectors are inside a vat filled with about 8,000 tons of liquid xenon. The hope is that a WIMP will hit a xenon molecule and trigger that spark of light. Project scientists conducted 280 days of observations. And they didn’t find any indication of WIMPs. But their test was the most sensitive yet for certain types of WIMPs. So the experiment rules out some candidate particles – narrowing the possibilities for dark matter. The Elephant in the Universe: 100-year search for dark matter Author: Govert Schilling Echoes of the Big Bang and Deep Underground Searches for WIMPs Headline: CMB Confirms Dark Matter and Energy; XENON Searches Remain Elusive The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), the oldest light in the universe from a few hundred thousand years after the Big Bang, provides crucial evidence for dark matter and dark energy. Analysis of its tiny temperature and density fluctuations precisely determines the universe's composition, independently confirming the need for both dark matter and dark energy even without other observations. Meanwhile, the direct hunt for WIMPs continues in deep underground laboratories like Gran Sasso in Italy, where massive, shielded experiments containing materials like liquid xenon aim to detect the exceedingly rare collisions of dark matter particles with atomic nuclei. These "xenon wars" have, to date, yielded "null results," intensifying the mystery. Only the DAMA experiment, using sodium iodide crystals, claims to have detected a seasonal dark matter effect, but its results remain unconfirmed by other teams. 1952

Today Downing Street has continued its reset – that is definitely not a reset – by providing more details on Labour's plan to cut the planning red tape and deliver a housing revolution. Their target is to build one and a half million new homes over the next five years by building on green belt land and giving councils mandatory targets. This has predictably been met with robust opposition from several groups who are concerned about the plan, which involves building on a green belt area the size of Surrey.
