Should One Always Wrap the Tefillin Strap Eight Times, or Can It Be Skipped to Avoid Missing Kaddish or Kedusha? One of the beautiful customs in donning the Tefillin Shel Yad is to wrap the strap around the forearm eight times before proceeding to the Tefillin Shel Rosh. This is the widely accepted Sephardic custom , as taught by the Ben Ish Hai (Parashat Vayera, Halacha 11) and based on Kabbalistic sources . Each of the eight windings corresponds to a spiritual level or sefirah and reflects the binding of one's physical strength and actions to the service of Hashem. Though some Ashkenazim follow the custom of wrapping seven times , for Sephardim — particularly those who follow the teachings of the Mekubalim — eight wraps is the standard. This practice is not just symbolic; it is seen as an integral part of the proper fulfillment of the Misva. The Spiritual Meaning of the Eight Wraps The number eight signifies that which is above nature — transcending the seven-day cycle of creation. According to the Mekubalim, these eight coils spiritually bind the Tefillin Shel Yad to one's heart, representing full control over emotions and desires. It connects the physical arm to a higher spiritual purpose. The wraps are to be done after tightening the Shel Yad on the biceps , and the strap should go down the arm in smooth, evenly spaced coils. The eight wraps help secure the Tefillin in place while also fulfilling this deeper mystical layer. The Ben Ish Hai and Kaf Ha'Haim both warn against neglecting this practice, especially for those who follow Kabbalistic customs. This is the dominant opinion among Sephardic Poskim, including Maran Ha'Hida and Rav Ben Sion Abba Shaul . The Halachic Dilemma: Missing Kaddish or Kedusha A common scenario: A person begins wrapping the Tefillin Shel Yad and realizes the Hazan is about to begin Kaddish or Kedusha . If he performs all eight wraps, he may miss the opportunity to respond to "Yehe Shemeh Rabba" or "Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh." Can he shorten or delay the wraps? This situation creates a halachic and spiritual tension : Should one preserve the integrity of the Tefillin placement and do all eight wraps? Or should he interrupt or shorten the process to participate in a communal declaration of Hashem's greatness? The Kabbalistic View: Never Skip the Wraps The Mekubalim are clear: Do not skip the eight wraps , even if it means missing Kaddish or Kedusha. Rav Eliyahu Mani , one of the great Mekubalim of Hebron and a teacher of the Ben Ish Hai , ruled that these eight wraps are an inseparable part of the Misva . To skip them—even temporarily—compromises the spiritual completeness of the Tefillin. According to this view, Kaddish and Kedusha are important, but not at the expense of properly fulfilling a Torah-level obligation with its spiritual intentions intact. The Ben Ish Hai heavily relies on Rabbi Mani for rulings in matters of Kabbalah, making this a binding view for Sephardim who follow the Mekubalim. The Practical View: Skip Temporarily If Necessary Some Halachic authorities take a more practical approach , especially in situations where missing Kaddish or Kedusha would result in a spiritual or emotional loss. According to this view: One may put on the Shel Yad, do one or two wraps to hold it in place, Then place the Shel Rosh, And return to complete the remaining wraps afterward . This opinion appears in Mishna Berura (O.H. 25:16) and is cited by various contemporary Poskim who aim to accommodate modern prayer timing challenges. For Sephardim, however, this approach is only a last resort , and only when all of the following conditions are met: The Tefillin Shel Yad is securely in place , even with only partial wrapping. The person intends to return and complete the wraps immediately after Shel Rosh. The person is responding to Kaddish, Kedusha, or Barchu , not idle speech or distraction. Even then, some Mekubalim object to this entirely and say one should miss Kaddish rather than compromise the Misva's structure. Anticipating the Situation: The Best Option The best practice is to plan ahead : If you know Kaddish or Kedusha is about to begin, wait a few moments before starting the Tefillin process. If you're already mid-Tefillin, continue properly and listen quietly (without verbal response) if you must. Summary: Sephardic custom is to wrap the Tefillin strap eight times around the forearm, based on Kabbalistic sources. These wraps are spiritually and halachically significant , and should not be skipped , even to answer Kaddish or Kedusha. In urgent situations, one may wrap partially , place the Shel Rosh, and return to complete the wraps —but this is only under pressing circumstances and with intention to fix the order. Best practice: Anticipate upcoming parts of tefillah and plan Tefillin placement accordingly to avoid halachic compromise.

There's a reason the story of Cinderella lingers in our bones. Beneath the soot, the glass slipper, and the pumpkin-turned-chariot lies an ancient memory. A memory of the soul's exile, longing, and return.Tonight, we're not reading a children's fairy tale. We're whispering open a door to the sacred. Anne Baring's breathtaking interpretation reveals Cinderella as an echo of lost goddess traditions, Gnostic myth, and the wounded feminine hidden deep inside the human psyche. This is the story of the soul forgotten in the ashes, the Divine Mother disguised as a fairy godmother, and the holy marriage between Spirit and Matter, waiting to be reawakened inside you.In this dreamlike descent, you'll trace Cinderella's soot-stained journey through ancient Sumer, Gnostic lamentations, and the shimmering wisdom of the Song of Songs. You'll see why the gown of light and the lost slipper are not just symbols of enchantment, but the soul's own cry for reunion with the Source. This episode is a spell, a remembering, an initiation. It's been a whirlwind few weeks having been in LA, San Fran, San Jose, New York and Sedona. I'm now back in Australia. Such an interesting couple of weeks as I had a few posts go viral whilst being away and so saying hi and welcoming new listeners to the podcast and a warm welcome back for those here again!Today, we're diving into the spiritual meaning of Easter—beyond the chocolate eggs, bunnies and pastel colours and into the deep waters of rebirth and resurrection. Who is Yeshua (Jesus) Let's begin not with "Jesus" as we often hear him—but with Yeshua, as a Jewish man, mystic and teacher.  Yeshua is the original Hebrew name for the man commonly known in the Western world as Jesus. He walked this earth not as a figurehead of a religion but as a deeply embodied soul, attuned to the divine. He spoke of the Kingdom of Heaven not as a place far away, but as something within. To say "Yeshua" is to remember his humanity and his roots. It's to see him as a spiritual teacher, perhaps even an ascended master who came to awaken love, compassion and truth in a time of oppression and fear.So in this episode, when I say Yeshua, I'm not speaking of a distant religious icon this is whom I'm referring to.There's a part of this episode that feels deeply personal for me. If you've read my book The Great Unlearning you'll know because I didn't always feel safe with the word Jesus. I grew up in a Catholic environment—where God well not God but religion often felt distant, judgmental, or angry. Where faith was more about fear than freedom. Where you had to confess your sins to be clean. Where divinity lived up there, not in here. For a long time, I associated Jesus with that fear. That shame. That sense of not being good enough. Not being pure enough. But something shifted when I began to explore Yeshua. Not the Jesus of institutions, but the Yeshua of love.It was really initiated 2 years ago when I was in Bali, I had my first personal encounter of Yeshua energy on the night of a full moon. He appeared as a loving protector. Easter as a Spiritual Metaphor for Resurrection Easter marks the story of Yeshua rising from the dead but the deeper, spiritual meaning of resurrection isn't just about one man coming back to life. The spiritual metaphor of resurrection wasn't just a moment in time but as a metaphor for your life. How many times have you died and come back to life?Think of the heartbreaks, the job losses, the versions of yourself that cracked open, shattered— and somehow, still, you rose.Spiritually, resurrection means coming back to life—after something has ended, broken down or fallen away. Spiritual Rebirth When we speak of rebirth, we're really speaking of a return to truth. A shedding of old identities, old stories and illusions that no longer serve us. Yeshua's resurrection wasn't only about life after death; it was also a radical statement about what it means to transcend fear, ego, and the worldly structures and conditioning that bind us.

The Spiritual Meaning of Lent: Lenten Conference #1 Psalm 95 and Psalm 51: The Foundations of Lent's Spiritual Journey During each Friday of the Lenten Season, there will be a Lenten Devotional Conference. This is the first week within this series. Each conference will appear singularly on the Website, SoundCloud, Facebook and iPod platforms. All conferences will also appear within this post. This first conference reflects on Psalm 95 and Psalm 51, emphasizing their significance in the season of Lent and the life of the Church. Psalm 95 is a daily call to praise, worship, and recognize God's sovereignty, but it also warns against hardening one's heart, as the Israelites did in the wilderness. It highlights the necessity of listening to God's voice today, not delaying obedience. During Lent, the Church abstains from saying “Hallelujah” as a symbolic act of preparation, reinforcing that true praise must come from a purified heart. The conference also discusses Psalm 51, a penitential psalm of King David after his sin with Bathsheba, stressing the importance of compunction—a deep sorrow for sin that moves one toward true repentance. Lent, therefore, is not merely about resisting temptation but about allowing God to transform the heart so that one can truly praise Him with sincerity and purity. Listen to this first devotional Lenten Conference and let it transform your heart. Join us virtually (or physically each week for additional Lenten conferences. Listen to: The Spiritual Meaning of Lent ------------------------------------------------ It begins as a call of praise. And so, note that the first thing the church says every day is to lift up the voice and give praise to God. And we pause at that moment, this command to praise the Lord. The word that we don't use during Lent, which I'm going to use now simply to say it so that we're all on the same page, is hallelujah. It is the great cry of Easter victory, and it literally means praise the Lord. And so note in a sense, there is this command to lift up the voice celebrating the great things God has done with a fullness of praise. And yet during Lent, we don't use that word, which expresses and communicates praise in its utter fullness. Hear more within the conference. ------------------------------------------------ Image: Christ of St. John of The Cross: Spanish Painter: Salvador Dalí: 1951 The painting is known as the Christ of Saint John of the Cross, because its design is based on a drawing by the 16th-century Spanish friar John of the Cross. As we move forward within the Season, each week's separate post will have various links to the other conferences. There will also be one post that has all conference. Today on A NEW BEGINNING, Pastor Greg Laurie offers hope for marriages headed in the wrong direction—hope that'll will restore them to God's plan. Devon Spier has long COVID. The artist, poet and spiritual guide has spent days bedridden, feeling ill and angry at God. But that forced pause gave her time to reflect on her life, art and beliefs, and she began to realize more emphatically how God, for her, exists in liminal spaces—in the wilderness, in small moments of peace and beauty between devastation and pain. These thoughts led her to create a new exhibit that blends art, design, poetry and spirituality. "18 Plus One" is on display at the Gerrard Art Space in Toronto from Oct 2 - 9, ahead of a fuller exhibit at the JCC Ann Arbor in Michigan from December 2024 to February 2025. Spier joins Ralph Benmergui—who is, like Spier, also not a rabbi but kind of vaguely close to one—on Not That Kind of Rabbi for a fulsome conversation about artistic expression, humanistic empathy and the meaning of God. Over the past year, my spirituality has deepened and I've been able to see difficult, painful, traumatic, and even tragic events in a whole new light. In this raw, candid, and vulnerable episode, recorded with Spiritual Medium Jessica Rachel shortly after the accident, I talk through my experience and how my negative emotions (fear, pain, guilt, sadness, anger, betrayal) started to transform into gratitude and appreciation for this gift of life and the lessons & growth our souls came here to learn and experience. After the episode's release, I was flooded with messages and emails from listeners who shared how deeply resonant, healing and powerful this conversation was. If you've been searching for answers (or just curious) about a spiritual perspective to difficult times, tragedy, loss, and traumatic events (as well as angels, guides, aliens, past lives, and more...), we hope this serves you as well.

We've all heard of angel numbers, right? 111 222 1234? But what about knocks? Raps on the door? I remember from my Ghost Adventure-obsessing days, the crew would often hear three knocks, declaring it a sure sign of dark energies, maybe a sign of a demon - a mocking of the trilogy that is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. But recently I heard four knocks on my front door, then three hours later, four more knocks. Once the sun rose, I went on web search  to find out if there was some deep meaning behind the four knocks. And that rabbit hole? Well...On a night when the wind was gusting from 70-100 miles per hour, I managed to tuck inside a comforter and fall asleep. At 1am I startled awake to the sound of four distinct knocks. Bam! Bam! Bam! Bam! Like a fist on a wood door, I immediately thought it might be a family member that'd come over because their power was out. I got out of bed and my instinct told me not to open the front door. I did pull back the shade and look outside. No one was there. No car was in the driveway. Nothing. I returned to bed and then Bam! Bam! Bam! Bam! at 4am. Startled again, this time the cat followed me down the hallway. I checked the side window and no one was on the porch, no car in the driveway, then I remembered the side door, that no one really uses. It has a pane of glass, and, you guessed it, no one was on the other side. I had another whispering from my intuition, don't open the door. I worried again that it might be a family member coming over, and then as I tucked myself back under the covers, my intuition said, It wouldn't be them. It'd be something dark in disguise. Whoo. Creepy thought. What's all that have to do with Orion? Maybe by the episode close I'll have figured that out!Liked the episode? ECLIPSE: A SIGN FROM HEAVEN @pstroybrewer Troy Brewer shares an urgent message about the spiritual significance of the upcoming 2023 solar eclipse. He explains how eclipses have often carried prophetic warnings from God throughout history. Brewer discusses the details of the eclipse's path, which crosses multiple locations with symbolic names like "Salem" and "Little Egypt." He connects this celestial event to biblical prophecies of "signs in the sun and moon" before Jesus' return. An artist named Max is creating a sculpture garden highlighting the eclipse's intersection over a giant cross - could this hold further clues? Brewer urges believers to watch the heavens for signs of the end times. But he also offers a message of hope - that through all circumstances, we can find power and peace in God. This presentation offers a fascinating glimpse into the spiritual meanings within the natural world and how God still speaks to His children today.

The Seven Last Words of Jesus: The Fourth Friday Lenten Season Conference When we say the seven last words, we mean the seven last statements of Jesus on The Cross. On Mount Sinai, the Lord gave to Moses ten words. Now, there on another hill, seven more words are given. God made Moses a meditator to receive the words. On Good Friday, God's Son gives the world seven more words. The parallelism continues. On Mount Sinai there was rolling thunder and shaking of the earth. On Good Friday, a similar thing happens. The site as we know is Calvary, the place of the new covenant. The Homily tells us more. As Jesus is on The Cross, Jesus addresses His people. The audio describes the Lord on The Cross to set the scene and to help form a mental image. These words were not given to the entire world. They were shared and heard by only a few people. Atonement, Reparation and Reconciliation to the Heart of Jesus Every so often we hear or read a statement that most Christians do not believe that Jesus is really present in the Blessed Sacrament. This statement is not new to our times! This belief and issue go back hundreds of years. Go back to the year 1673, in the convent of the Visitation Sisters, a religious community that is founded precisely to visit the Blessed Sacrament. Founded to spend time in adoration and appreciation for the sacramental presence of the Lord. Christ appeared to a young sister . . . Margaret Mary. Hear more on what Jesus expects from all of us in: Atonement, Reparation and Reconciliation to the Heart of Jesus Listen to this third installment of this season's Lenten Friday Conferences. Where Did the Stations of the Cross Come From? Why Are They Important? What is the Peculiar Power of this Prayer? Note: This audio does not contain the actual praying of the stations. The audio addresses the origin questions appearing within the title, plus more. If you wish to pray the Stations, a link within the post provides an example. During the Lenten Season, many participate in the devotion and the praying of The Stations or The Way of The Cross. While we see the stations . . . either outside on the grounds or within the parish, we often pray before them. However, we often spend little time reflecting on what they are in the first place. Where did the Stations come from? Why are they important? What is the peculiar power of this prayer? It seems a good time during this Lenten Season, when we often pray the stations, to take some formation time on the stations themselves. Some global issues first: St. Louis de Montfort tells us the single greatest means of quickening our hearts with love for the Lord, is to contemplate lovingly all that He suffered for us! The more we focus on His Passion, the more we deepen our love for the Lord. Yes, we will have regret for our sins that causes His Passion in the first place! Yes, we should feel that in our hearts. But the overall object is to kindle our love for the Lord! Note the thrust of that, as the Homily exclaims! The Spiritual Meaning of Lent There is a definite structure to Lent. It is not merely a calendar structure. It is a spiritual structure! The more we can appreciate this fact, the more we can enter into the fullness of this holy season. Lent means many things to Christians. We use words to describe this season, like fasting and penance. Lent is associated with certain devotions, including the Stations of the Cross. All of this is good and helpful! However, sometimes we wonder how this all fits together! What is the relationship to the Ashes on Ash Wednesday to the Stations of the Cross? What is the relationship between ashes and fasting? How does fasting connect us to the Stations of the Cross? What we want to do is back up a little bit and look at the Lenten Season as a whole. Sometimes Christians get caught up in the details that we miss the overall framework in which they are set that gives them meaning. Lent is forty days, hence the song. But that is true and not true at once. If you take out the Sundays, there is forty days of Lent. But we refer to these Sundays as Sundays of Lent. Therefore, the Lenten Season has actually more than forty days. Informative, but what is its significance? Lent contains multiple periods. It begins with the introductory period, then the longer period determined by the Sundays. The introductory period begins on Ash Wednesday and includes the next three days. Then the Lenten Season shifts as we celebrate the first Sunday. Hear more within the Homily and why understanding these periods are important to us! The beginning of Lent is connected to the end of the Lenten Season . . . Easter Sunday. We must not ever forget that! Hear more as to what that really means. Lent exists to prepare us for the celebration of Easter! How spiritually does it do that? Listen to this special Meditation Media given as a conference on the first Friday of Lent.
