According to CeaseFire PA, 1,600 Pennsylvanians lose their lives to gun violence each year. Adam Garber is the Executive Director of CeaseFire PA and has been leading the organization since 2020 . “We believe that every Pennsylvanian should be able to live free from gun violence where they feel and they are safe, whether they're going to school, their grocery shopping, their walking around their neighborhood or in their in their own home. And I really came to the word because I live in South Philadelphia with my family and was watching gun violence devastate my community and neighborhood and really not just the loss of life, which is so what's so significant, but how it changed the character of people interacting because of that fear. And so I've spent a long time thinking about how do we build movements in power to address social problems. And I thought this was a really exciting opportunity, as sad as it is, to make sure that we don't have to live this way anymore, “Said Garber. Dr. Shawn Safford is a UPMC pediatric surgeon. He also the President of the American Trauma Society Pennsylvania Division, and on the committee for the PA health professionals to end gun violence. Safford says gun violence is the number one killer of children. “That, to me means we need to do something as a group. That's what got me involved and that's what's made me passionate, is the day-to-day process that you take care of a family, that when the child comes in who's been shot and you look to that mom to have to tell her, I'm sorry, your child's dead. And it's this is a totally preventable disease. It's a totally preventable problem. This doesn't have to happen. And if we as a group together can come together to make it stop and all together to come up with common sense ideas of mitigating these problems, we can stop children from being killed. I don't have to have that conversation again. I never want to have that conversation again, “said Safford. Reverend Martha Harris, Priest in Charge at Saint Luke Episcopal Church works with other faith leaders to advocate an end to gun violence. “My whole time as an ordained priest has been framed by this collective sin of gun violence, that's a uniquely American problem. And it's particularly prevalent in Pennsylvania where people own more guns than we have people in the state. Guns don't solve problems. Guns cause problems. Early childhood mortality. Teenage suicide is often on the rise. It's a hugely problematic area. And as faith leaders, we approach this as a moral issue, “said Harris. Through partnership, Safford, Harris, and Garber says is one of the first steps to advocating an end to gun violence. “I come at it from a standpoint of taking care of the families and taking care of the actual medical capabilities. Reverend Harris comes out from the spiritual part, all of these requiring healing across this across the spectrum of taking care of these children and their families. And again, I'm speaking specifically to children, of course, and but just the actual medical care. And then, of course, Adam helps us from the education and advocacy and getting changes at the government level in order for us to make an improved outcome from all of this. It has to be exactly this. It has to be people across a level, across specialties and their focus. I think Sean said it exactly right. And the only thing I'd add is I think it's reflective of where Pennsylvanians are. This is what Pennsylvanians want, despite the politics and the hard parts of the policy piece. Poll after poll will tell you 80% of Pennsylvanians, I was talking to 100 the other day, I have a veteran on my staff, or I have a hunter on my staff. I have a faith leader on my board and a Republican on my board. Our organizations are individuals, our communities are all sick of this crisis that is damaging and taking away our loved ones and our friends. And that's where our elected officials are really failing because they some of them are refusing to come together the way Pennsylvanians want and the way this call it, these coalitions are to address it, “said Safford. Nick Timiraos of The Wall Street Journal writes: “The Federal Reserve voted to lower interest rates by a half percentage point, opting for a bolder start in making its first reduction since 2020. The long-anticipated pivot followed an all-out fight against inflation the central bank launched two years ago. Eleven of 12 Fed voters backed the cut, which will bring the benchmark federal-funds rate to a range between 4.75% and 5%. Quarterly projections released Wednesday showed a narrow majority of officials penciled in cuts that would lower rates by at least a quarter point each at meetings in November and December.” You can read the full article here: https://www.wsj.com/economy/central-banking/fed-cuts-rates-by-half-percentage-point-03566d82 5:40pm- On Tuesday, Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation banning digitally altered political videos in California—even those that are made to parody elected officials if not clearly labeled. Newsom pledged to ban these types of videos after Elon Musk published a clearly satirical artificial intelligence-generated social media post mocking Kamala Harris's policy preferences and record. How is this crack down on free speech not violative of the First Amendment? Rich notes that the law will almost certainly be challenged in court. On Wednesday night, The Babylon Bee hilariously trolled Newsom by making an A.I. generated ad which features a fake Newsom bragging about how horrible he has been as governor. 5:45pm- In her new memoir, Hillary Clinton reveals that she has given her stomach a nickname. It's Flag Day? Have you checked the standings yet? Following closely behind the Cardinals' 3-0 victory against the Cubs at Wrigley Field and each team's 49th game this season decided by three or fewer runs, a question was presented to KMOX/1120 AM's Kevin Wheeler. What are the traits necessary for a team to do well in so many slim-margin games? As a guest on a brand-new edition of the Best Podcast in Baseball with Derrick Goold, Wheeler outlines two necessities for every team to thrive in close games and how doing one will help the other survive. It is vital Wheeler illustrates for a team to get more innings from the rotation so that it's asking less of the bullpen in close games, and that will help keep the bullpen fresh to turn those close games into victories. This is how teams can get friendly with the confines of close games. During a 4-3 home stand and again as they opened a Father's Day weekend series at Wrigley, the Cardinals showcased some of the developing depth in the bullpen that is helping them hold leads and secure slim victory. Ryan Fernandez has emerged with holds in consecutive games; Matthew Liberatore's return to the bullpen gives the Cardinals a third setup lefty and one with strikeout stuff at his best; and Chris Roycroft, only a few years removed from independent ball, has intrigued the Cardinals with his power stuff and movement. Or, as one teammate put it, "filth." The Cardinals returned to .500 with the victory and should they spillover for the first time in more than a year, they'll be one of the few teams in the National League with a winning record. Wheeler and Goold discuss if that's fallout from the consolidation of spending and power at only a few NL spots, such as Dodger Stadium and South Philadelphia. If those teams are collecting the highest-dollar stars in the NL what does that mean for the remainder of the standings and how do teams keep up as that spending gap grows into a standings gap. Wheeler suggests that a lot can be learned from NL Central-leader Milwaukee and how the Brewers have kept ahead without spending too much. It's an example of how the division, bunched-up and sometimes confusing mediocrity for parity, will be decided. What team gets its stars to shine the brightest the soonest? That list would include Cubs Dansby Swanson just as it could be asked of the Cardinals' cornerstones Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, and Willson Contreras, who is on the injured list with a fractured arm. That list would also include Cardinals starter Sonny Gray, whose bounce-back start helped Cardinals to a winning home stand. And all of that brings the conversation back around to one way for a team to thrive in so many close games. Play fewer of them. Score more runs to avoid them. Also discussed in this episode of BPIB is the Cardinals' visit to Rickwood Field later this month for the first National League regular-season game at the nation's oldest ballpark. The Best Podcast in Baseball, sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and baseball writer Derrick Goold.
