The very convincing inner voice that keeps telling you on repeat that you do not have a problem.   This is hard because we build our lives around alcohol and usually this is done unconsciously. The problem is often hiding in plain sight, and you just can't or choose not to see it. It's also hard because marketing is powerful and smart people are paid a lot of money to make you feel like it's a required sidecar to life.   So even though the addiction is hiding in plain sight, you also know it is there. You know how alcohol makes you feel. In addition to the voice saying you don't have a problem, there is another voice telling you, "I'll give you 50 more hangovers and then it's time to move on".   Next week, we'll talk more about moving on.   [06:23] Paul introduces Becca:   Becca is 35 years old, lives in Delaware County, PA, has two cats and 12-13 nieces and nephews. For fun, Becca enjoys hiking, music, reading, film, cooking and puzzles.    Becca was one of seven children growing up. Her older siblings liked to party, so Becca followed in their footsteps in her early teens. She drank and smoked pot for a few years before getting introduced to harder drugs when she was around 16. She quickly felt like she had cracked the code for getting through life. Becca says she was really naïve and spending time with bad people.   In 2010, Becca was in a car accident that left her badly injured. She was only 19 and says this was the lowest time of her life. She withdrew from opiates but ended up going back out before having a friend take her to rehab where she first attempted recovery and eventually got sober in 2012.   Becca dealt with the loss of several friends in 2013, and this is when excessive drinking sneaked into her life. She had another accident and DUI in 2014 and refused to believe that the drinking was a problem. She was able to quit when she went to school and believed that since she could quit for periods of time, that it wasn't an issue for her.   Becca believed that she should be able to control her drinking and would beat herself up whenever she wasn't. Her drinking slowed dramatically in 2019 because she was sick of the anxiety and how she was relating to herself. She did end up becoming a workaholic to avoid dealing with anything that was bothering her.   After staying sober through the pandemic, Becca began to use drinking as a way to connect with others and not drink by herself. Within a few weeks she was right back into self-loathing and trapped in the cycle of stops and starts for the next several years.   In 2024, Becca took a fall at work that has had lasting physical and emotional impacts. She went through another dark time where she wasn't showing up for herself or others and was just sick and tired of being sick and tired.   It was after six months of sobriety that Becca joined AA, found the RE podcast, and later joined Café RE. In her previous attempts at quitting, Becca was trying to do it by herself. Being part of community has been life-changing for her in that she feels acceptance and the ability to hear her story in others. This year she has finally started to feel safer in her nervous system, she is more grounded in herself and able to hold space for good things.   Becca's parting piece of guidance: Don't get stuck on the fear. For 15 years, he served in a role that demanded equal parts law enforcement officer, teacher, counselor, and father figure. He found purpose in helping young people navigate difficult circumstances while building deep bonds with coworkers who became family. But everything changed. After years of dedication—including more than a decade of being on call 24/7—the program that had become his home was shut down. At just 39 years old, Erik lost not only his career, but also his identity, community, and sense of purpose. Faced with unemployment, financial uncertainty, and the responsibility of supporting a wife and three children, Erik took whatever work he could find—including loading trucks at UPS at 3 a.m. for $10 an hour. The financial loss was painful, but the emotional loss was even greater. He describes it as feeling like "a body without a soul." Like so many people who dedicate themselves to service professions, Erik struggled with trauma, toxic family dynamics, alcohol use, and the difficult question many ask after major life changes: Who am I when the job is gone? Through self-reflection, recovery, family, and eventually rediscovering his purpose working with adult offenders, Erik began rebuilding his life from the ground up. Today, Erik is the founder of EM Personal Development, where he uses over two decades of professional experience and personal adversity to help others navigate change, leadership, mental health, relationships, and personal growth. The law includes cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, that have already resulted in over 3 million people losing this important benefit. On June 1st, the federal government issued the regulations that operationalize the law’s requirement that people between the ages of 18 and 64 who do not live with a child under the age of 14 and who receive SNAP benefits–and/or Medicaid–either work 80 hours a month, do that time in community service or volunteer work, or be enrolled at least half time in an educational program. The law also limits eligibility for certain lawfully present immigrants. This is at a time when the cost of food is rising and is expected to continue to rise until the conflict in the Middle East has ended and the Strait of Hormuz is reopened. Approximately one in 10 households in Delaware County participates in the SNAP program. Democrats are trying to find a candidate who can beat incumbent Republican Scott Perry in Pennsylvania's 10th Congressional race The primary race is between centrist Janelle Stelson and progressive Justin Douglas. Some Pennsylvania lawmakers say, as immigrant students' rights have come under attack, they want to take steps to ensure public schools remain safe and welcoming. New state legislation would require schools to adopt policies that protect students' privacy and limit ICE enforcement on school grounds. Hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians rely on direct care workers to get a little assistance at home. Most work for agencies, but 6% are employed directly by a Medicaid enrollee. That category of caretaker now qualifies for a raise after lawmakers added $21 million to the current state budget to fund the increase in pay. Delaware County is eyeing a regional youth detention center five years after abuse allegations shuttered a facility in the county. Berks and Dauphin counties are in those partnership talks. Ford of Vietnamese war orphans in the final days of Saigon in 1975.But this episode is about more than history. It is about what happens to people after history moves through them. It is about memory, identity, and the bonds that form in the most unlikely of circumstances. It is about three people whose lives were bound together by a single flight fifty years ago - and who have never let go of each other since.Karen Walker Ryan served as a Pan Am flight attendant from 1969 to 1978. She volunteered to fly into Saigon in the final days of the war, and her photograph holding baby Carol Mason was later published on the cover of Reader's Digest. Karen has stayed in close contact with several of the children from that flight ever since. Her story, and her decades-long bond with Carol and Matt, was featured on ABC's Good Morning America and ABC's 20/20.Carol Mason was five months old when she was airlifted out of Vietnam on the second Operation Babylift flight. She grew up in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and learned about her own story at age 25 when her mother spotted Karen's photograph in a magazine. Hers is a story about what it means to search for yourself - and what you find when you finally do.Dr. Matthew Steiner was born in Vientiane, Laos in 1966 and raised in a Saigon orphanage before being evacuated to the United States at age nine through Operation Babylift. He went on to become a high school valedictorian, and today serves as an emergency physician helping patients facing life-threatening conditions. The boy who once needed saving, now doing the saving. This episode also features an original song, "Waking Up American," performed by Jared Rehberg - himself a Babylift adoptee - at the Pan Am Museum's 50th Anniversary event in Garden City, New York.
