Anger that is compounded by the quality of Amazon's recent Alex Rider adaptation. Andy talks about a movie that caused film festival attendees to walk out of the cinema in 'The Nightingale' as well as 'Leave No Trace'. Other movies discussed include: Disney's Moana, The Mighty Ducks and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse!

Corinne Riley visits to talk about Disney's Moana and how it relates to one's unique vocation in Christ.
Okay, so most of us are probably familiar with the popular Disney film “Moana” right? If not, I must know how you have not seen this yet - just from a purely fascinated, curious...and frankly, impressed standpoint. It seems to be pretty unavoidable. Which is great, I'll say, because it's an awesome movie and we're big fans at our house. If you haven't seen it, I did my best to highlight the main parts you need to know to get the point I'm making in this episode, so it's not necessary. But be warned that if you have somehow not seen the movie and plan on doing so and would be devastated to hear any major plot-revealing information, best to save this episode for after you watch it. I would hate to spoil a Disney movie for someone haha. So anyway, we're talking about the storyline of Te Fiti and Te Ka and what can happen when you're me and you look way deep into the symbolism and meaning and come out with a “woahhhhh that was awesome,” type of realization. I see the Te Fiti and Te Ka characters in all of us. And how that manifests and can have ripple effects in our lives. The bottom line of this episode is that you are a goddess and we all need reminders to get back in touch with who we truly are, and to love who that is. So we explore that and talk about some specific things you can do to get in touch with yourself. Use that powerful mama goddess energy for greatness and healing! And go watch “Moana” and get the songs stuck in your head for the hundredth time. Our relationship with God becomes dysfunctional and strange if we believe the lie that God needs us to perform for him otherwise He becomes moody, distant, and scary.
Joel Hubert is what the creation of podcast is all about. He is a ultra marathon runner, traveler, and experimental thinker. While in the jungle of Uruguay, he found a retreat where he participated in a sacred ceremony of psychedelic 'communion' known as ayahuasca. He and Joe connect immediately over their issues yet retained respect for the Catholic church, suffering to create an open mind, their experiences with DMT/ayahuasca, what those medicines are, and more importantly what they could do for our culture. But before that, Joe ties a story of his daughter and Disney's Moana to the podcast's narrative that makes him remember a part of his childhood. To decolonize or Indigenize the university? Sereana Naepi, an Indigenous Pacific Islander, takes on this question through her doctoral studies in Education at UBC on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Musqueam people. PhDiva Xine interviews Sereana about Education as a discipline unto itself and how she brings Indigenous methodologies into her work on Indigenous women's experiences as higher ed staff. As a Fijian scholar from New Zealand, Sereana explains how her community and family inform her work: the PhD gives you a right to serve, not a right not to lead. In this episode, we discuss the various erasures of Pacific Islanders in culture, climate change, the category of Asian American and Pacific Islander, and Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings. Creeks, playgrounds, commodore 64 games, and the woods! Finally, they touch on next week's polarizing topic, was Guardians of the Galaxy volume 2 appropriate for kids?

The voice behind "Moana", Auli'i Cravalho, tells us which Disney princesses she could take in a fight. Plus, we hit Capital's Jingle Bell Ball to give out some truly awful presents to the stars. Did Little Mix like their shaky egg? Was Nathan Sykes a fan of UHT milk? And why is Louisa Johnson so obsessed with gravy?
Matthew Sweet explores music for films reflecting the depictions of indigenous peoples in the week that has seen the launch of Disney's "Moana". In particular he focuses on Native Americans on the screen. Drawing on music from Peter Pan to the present, Matthew looks at how stereo-typical portrayals have gradually given way to more rounded representations. The programme includes music from the films of John Wayne; "A Man Called Horse"; "Dances With Wolves" and "The Revenant". The Classic Score of the Week is Max Steiner's music for "The Searchers".

What makes this - another, (sigh?) Disney Princess narrative, and a musical, and an adventure story with a cute sidekick (and another sidekick that's a total foole idiot) - different than the other Disney movies? What if it doesn't have a (gasp) male romantic lead that she is pining for? How about full on allusions to Herculean and Greek mythology, among other things? Or songs that, you know, comes from THE CREATOR OF HAMILTON ALL BOW DOWN TO THE MASTER OF ALL MUSICALS! Well... listen more to see what's going on in this latest from the directors of movies you might've heard of that got a little buzz once called THE LITTLE MERMAID, THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE and ALADDIN.
