Classic Debate: Ian Fleming vs John le Carré

They are the titans of the spy novel, who have elevated thrillers to the level of literary fiction. Much imitated, much adapted by the big and small screens, Ian Fleming and John Le Carré have painted our picture of post-war espionage: Fleming through the dashing figure of James Bond, with his lush locations and Martinis as icy as his heart; Le Carré through his damning portrait of the British secret service drawn from his own time in MI5 and MI6. But which of the two novelists is the greater? In this thrilling contest, Fleming's case was made by Anthony Horowitz, creator of the bestselling Alex Rider spy novels and author of the official Bond continuation novel Trigger Mortis. Championing Le Carré – whose memoir about his life as a former spy currently sits in the bestseller lists – was David Farr, Emmy-nominated screenwriter of the BBC's adaptation of The Night Manager. Actors Lesley Manville, Simon Callow, Matthew Lewis and Alex Macqueen joined us to bring both authors' works to life along with our host, author and critic Erica Wagner. ----  If you'd like to become a Member and get access to all our full ad free conversations, plus all of our Members-only content, just visit intelligencesquared.com/membership to find out more. Charithra Chandran, born in Perth, Scotland, is the daughter of Tamil Indian medical professionals. Her parents separated when she was two, leading her to India with her father, where she lived with her grandparents in Tamil Nadu. Returning to the UK at the age of four, she pursued her education in Liverpool, Suffolk and Oxford. Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from New College, Oxford in 2019, Charithra actively participated in various productions during her university years and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. Despite earning her degree, Charithra felt a strong passion for performing, prompting her to take a gap year to explore her dream before committing to a conventional full-time job. While working part-time for the New Policy Institute after her gap year, she realised her true calling was acting. She turned down a job offer from Boston Consulting Group, choosing to pursue a career in acting. In 2021, Charithra joined the main cast of the spy thriller series "Alex Rider" for its second season, playing the role of Sabina Pleasance, along with the role of Edwina in the second series of the Shondaland-produced Netflix period drama "Bridgerton," based on the novel "The Viscount Who Loved Me," in 2022. Season 4 of the series begins by exploring Charithra's journey, touching on topics such as making a drastic career change, navigating discrimination, and emphasising the importance of authenticity. A brick hit him in the face and he died instantly, though not before reciting his beloved last vows: “For psp and other releases on friday, click here to earn an early (presale) slot ticket entry time or also get details generally about all releases and game features there to see how you can benefit!” — Talk To Filtered Transformer Rating: 0.1% probability of including violence “Prosaic alignment” is the most popular paradigm in modern AI alignment. It theorizes that we'll train future superintelligent AIs the same way that we train modern dumb ones: through gradient descent via reinforcement learning. Every time they do a good thing, we say “Yes, like this!”, in a way that pulls their incomprehensible code slightly in the direction of whatever they just did. Every time they do a bad thing, we say “No, not that!,” in a way that pushes their incomprehensible code slightly in the opposite direction. After training on thousands or millions of examples, the AI displays a seemingly sophisticated understanding of the conceptual boundaries of what we want. For example, suppose we have an AI that's good at making money. But we want to align it to a harder task: making money without committing any crimes. So we simulate it running money-making schemes a thousand times, and give it positive reinforcement every time it generates a legal plan, and negative reinforcement every time it generates a criminal one. At the end of the training run, we hopefully have an AI that's good at making money and aligned with our goal of following the law. Two things could go wrong here: The AI is stupid, ie incompetent at world-modeling. For example, it might understand that we don't want it to commit murder, but not understand that selling arsenic-laden food will kill humans. So it sells arsenic-laden food and humans die. The AI understands the world just fine, but didn't absorb the categories we thought it absorbed. For example, maybe none of our examples involved children, and so the AI learned not to murder adult humans, but didn't learn not to murder children. This isn't because the AI is too stupid to know that children are humans. It's because we're running a direct channel to something like the AI's “subconscious”, and we can only talk to it by playing this dumb game of “try to figure out the boundaries of the category including these 1,000 examples”. Problem 1 is self-resolving; once AIs are smart enough to be dangerous, they're probably smart enough to model the world well. How bad is Problem 2? Will an AI understand the category boundaries of what we want easily and naturally after just a few examples? Will it take millions of examples and a desperate effort? Or is there some reason why even smart AIs will never end up with goals close enough to ours to be safe, no matter how many examples we give them? AI scientists have debated these questions for years, usually as pure philosophy. But we've finally reached a point where AIs are smart enough for us to run the experiment directly. Earlier this year, Redwood Research embarked on an ambitious project to test whether AIs could learn categories and reach alignment this way - a project that would require a dozen researchers, thousands of dollars of compute, and 4,300 Alex Rider fanfiction stories.

In this thrilling contest, Fleming's case will made by Anthony Horowitz, creator of the bestselling Alex Rider spy novels and author of the official Bond continuation novel Trigger Mortis. Anthony Horowitz knows the advantages and limitations of writing in a major franchise. In his latest James Bond novel, With a Mind to Kill, Horowitz uses his own brand of fast-paced dialogue and gripping storytelling to revitalize the Bond franchise while working within the confines of Ian Fleming's original world. Anthony has written over 40 books, with his Alex Rider series selling more than 19 million copies. To purchase With a Mind to Kill, follow the link below. I have plenty of other children's books out there - I was delighted to discover my Power of Five series (Raven's Gate, Evil Star etc) on sale in a tiny bookshop in Elounda, Crete only a few days ago. Anthony is also an acclaimed writer for adults and was commissioned by the Conan Doyle Estate and Orion Books to write two new Sherlock Holmes novels. The House of Silk was published in November 2011 and was internationally lauded as the top title of the autumn. The sequel, Moriarty, was published in October 2014 with similar success. Most recently he was commissioned by the Ian Fleming Estate to write the James Bond novel Trigger Mortis, which was published on 8th September 2015.Anthony is responsible for creating and writing some of the UK's most beloved and successful television series, producing the first seven episodes (and the title) of Midsomer Murders. The valuable work the organization does right in the heart of the community – bringing together trained volunteers into families lives to support them both practically and emotionally, helping them to grow in confidence and empowering them with the skills to raise their children to flourish – is why Anthony chose to support this dedicated and hardworking charity. And in Anthony's own word – “For me, charity begins at Home-Start.”Anthony was awarded an OBE for his services to literature in January 2014.

It's no surprise that a majority off fans will state, "The books are ALWAYS better!" We say this about; Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Sherlock Holmes, The Chronicles of Narnia, and so many more. I alone have said this, screaming this, debated this many times (even if I had never read the book(s). Being a hardcore book lover can be a frustrating, heartbreaking and even loving experience when your favorite books get turned into a TV Show or Film. I remember when I first learned that Alex Rider: Storm Breaker was getting turned into a film. It was exciting, inviting and exhilarating to see the story I loved coming to "life". I have a lot of feelings about the film and fully understand and support the reasons for not making any more of the Alex Rider books series into films! This week Zara Miller jumped on the opportunity to sit down and talk with me about our shared experiences, feelings, and opinions about the Vampire Diaries series being turned into a CW (television network) Show. We talk about the MANY characters that were either changed or removed all together. Why were the main characters, Damon and Stefan Salvatore's history and heritage changed? What happened to the friendship turned relationship between Damon Salvatore and Bonnie Bennet? What the heck happened to Elena's sister (which was changed to a brother). We also look at the different plots that were played out in 8 seasons vs 13 books and why we felt some of these changes (and hiccups) were made. Elena's entire personality was changed, basically making every interaction with her different and unrecognizable. We noticed that after season 3-4 plots points and confrontations were being recycled. They show got so off the rails that the main character of the books and shows LEFT THE SHOW EARLY and the cast kept going for an additional TWO SEASONS! Insanity ensues, but Zara and I make sure to take you through all of our frustrations, loves and questions! Make sure to head over to Amazon.com and pick-up a copy of Zara Miller's new book "I Am Cecilia".
