Exclusive Deadpool and Brave New World Footage at Cinema Con. and Paramount Catches Franchise Fever

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for information about all your favorite Fictional Universes Marvel Studios had a strong showing during last week's Cinema Con in Las Vegas, where Kevin Feige dropped bombs and F-bombs while unveiling footage from Deadpool & Wolverine and Captain America: Brave New World. The look at Deadpool featured 9 minutes of spoiler-free material introduced by director Shawn Levy, which was preceded by a comedic clip with the title characters in costume bemoaning cell phone use in the theater. Meanwhile, the Cap 4 scene included an interaction between Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson and Harrison Ford as Thunderbolt Ross, with Isiah Bradley factoring into a confrontation.  Paramount also made several major announcements during its Cinema Con panel; officially confirming the Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover film is in development and will be produced by Steven Spielberg. An R-rated, live action feature film adaptation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin storyline was also announced, as was a new Star Trek origin film that will act as a prequel to the 2009 movie, slated for a 2025 release. Perhaps most importantly, the studio debuted the trailer for Gladiator 2, starring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington.  We received our first indication of a title change for Thunderbolts when we caught a glimpse of the logo during Florence Pugh's set tour a couple of weeks ago. Kevin Fiege confirmed the title change while remaining cagey during his appearance at Cinema Con saying, “Yes, you'll notice the asterisk on Thunderbolts. That is the official title of Thunderbolts and we won't talk more about that until after the movie comes out.”  James Gunn revealed the official insignia for his DCU version of Superman during Cinema Con. The emblem features a clean and simplistic design that is reminiscent of the logo from the Kingdom Come comic line. Deadpool and Wolverine are joining the viral popcorn bucket craze. While promoting the film at Cinema Con, Kevin Fiege confirmed an intentionally crude and rude bucket was being designed by Deadpool himself. Lionsgate shifted The Crow release to August 23 from its initial June 7 date and postponed Saw XI by a year, now set for September 26, 2025 Hailee Steinfeld joined the cast of Ryan Coolger's untitled horror thriller film and will star alongside Michael B. Jordan. StarWars.com announced a new comic miniseries starting July 3 called Star Wars: Inquisitors. Lionsgate announced that Blumhouse will revive The Blair Witch Project. It's currently unclear if the film will connect to the original 1999 film or reimagine the concept. Margot Robbie's production company Lucky Chap will produce a film based on the board game Monopoly. Nia DaCosta, director of The Marvels and Candyman, is in discussions to direct the second film in Sony's 28 Days Later sequel trilogy, with Danny Boyle returning to helm the first sequel from writer Alex Garland. Tim Kring, the creator of the superhero drama series Heroes, is pitching a sequel titled Heroes: Eclipsed to potential buyers. The original series aired for four seasons on NBC and was followed by a limited series titled Heroes Reborn in 2015. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has been renewed for Season Two at Apple TV+. In addition, Apple struck a deal with Legendary Entertainment to develop multiple spinoff series set in the Monsterverse. Star Wars author John Jackson Miller is penning Batman: Resurrection, a continuation of Tim Burton's 1989 Batman film, set immediately after its events, in contrast to the Batman '89 comics, which occur after both Burton films. Glen Powell, star of Anyone But You, Twisters, and Top Gun: Maverick will star in Paramount's The Running Man, a new adaptation of the Stephen King novel that Edgar Wright will direct.

In an exhilarating development for fans of groundbreaking television, "Heroes" is set to make a monumental return with "Heroes: Eclipsed," breathing new life into the iconic 2006 superhero drama series. Sources close to Deadline have revealed that the project, crafted by original creator Tim Kring, is currently being shopped around to potential buyers in a timely nod to the solar eclipse week—a celestial event that played a pivotal role in the original series, both thematically and visually. "Heroes: Eclipsed" promises a forward leap into the future, picking up years after the events of the original series. This new chapter will introduce audiences to the next generation of evos—ordinary individuals awakening to extraordinary abilities. As these new characters grapple with the implications of their powers, they find themselves pitted against familiar foes and daunting new threats, all while navigating the treacherous path of human evolution. The announcement of "Heroes: Eclipsed" rekindles memories of the 2015 limited series "Heroes Reborn," which similarly explored the lives of new evos while bringing back beloved characters from the original series, such as Noah Bennet (Jack Coleman), Dr. Mohinder Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy), Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka), and Matt Parkman (Greg Grunberg). This connection suggests a rich tapestry of storylines that honor the legacy of the "Heroes" universe while charting exciting new territory. "Heroes" originally captured the imagination of viewers worldwide with its unique blend of action, drama, and the exploration of human potential, symbolized by the iconic mantra, "Save the cheerleader, save the world." Despite the mixed reception of "Heroes Reborn," the franchise's enduring appeal and the original series' Emmy-nominated success underscore the significant cultural impact of "Heroes." The visionary behind this resurgence, Tim Kring, is at the helm as the executive producer, alongside Jordan Cerf of Mosaic. With Universal Television backing the project, the anticipation for "Heroes: Eclipsed" is palpable, although official comments from Universal TV are still pending. As "Heroes: Eclipsed" seeks a home, potentially returning to NBC or finding a new platform among streamers, fans old and new can only wait in eager anticipation for the return of a series that once redefined the superhero genre on television. With a legacy of innovation and storytelling that captures the essence of heroism in the modern age, "Heroes: Eclipsed" stands poised to usher in a new era for the franchise.

In 2005, Tim Kring took a 5 hour walk with his old friend Jeph Loeb, and pitched him the pilot episode of his new show - Heroes. Inspired by a structural writing challenge, a desire to see good in ordinary people and Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia, Heroes was one of the biggest new shows of 2006. By the end of 2007, it had all come crashing down. The Writer's Strike is often held responsible for Heroes's demise, but as usual, there's a lot more to the story. Content Warning:  Les Moonves is alleged to have sexually assaulted more than a dozen women since the 1980s. Tim Kring is a television writer and producer. He created the hit sci-fi drama ‘Heroes', which became a global sensation - running for four seasons and winning him both a BAFTA and an Emmy nomination. Tim got his big break on ‘Knight Rider' in 1985, and since then he's worked on some of TV's biggest shows like ‘Chicago Hope' and the Jason Bourne spin-off show ‘Treadstone', going on to become series creator for many flagship programmes, such as ‘Crossing Jordan' and ‘Touch'. In this in-depth interview, Tim candidly reflects on his long and varied career, and tells us what Hollywood is really like from the inside - warts and all; takes us behind-the-scenes on how TV shows are made - from the initial idea, to seeing the results on screen - including the casting, production and politics challenges along the way; and reveals how he wasn't prepared for just how profoundly his hit show ‘Heroes' would change his world view.

Tim grew up in rural California where he attended the only non-accredited highschool in the state. But this didn’t dissuade him from pursuing an early goal to work in the Film Industry. Taking advice from a mentor to cut his academic teeth in an unrelated field of study in college before entering film school, Tim unknowingly entered the working world of film production with another acquired skill set. Realizing that he could create his own stories for the industry, he pivoted from the production side after he pounded the pavement for an opportunity to showcase his creative writing abilities. Three decades later, and with a slew of successful TV series under his belt, Tim muses with us about the source of his muse. We discuss tapping into the river realm of creation and the exhilaration of engaging the audience into the story creation process. We also discuss his socially-focused tech entrepreneurial ventures and what they mean for him. We learn about his excitement for the impact that today’s young leaders are poised to make as they become aware that they can create impact for many – and from wherever. Who is my character? Why does she say this line? What’s my motivation? These are valid, if not typical, Acting 101 probings. But as a certain actor so simply puts it, “Sometimes, you just need to walk in the door.” That actor is Kathryn Hahn, who is a great example of someone who does just that; she steps into frame and before she utters a line, you’re watching, just waiting for what she’s going to say or do. That takes a rare kind of presence, one that for too long seemed to be hiding in plain sight. Hahn got her first real TV break when Crossing Jordan producer Tim Kring created the role of Lily Lebowski for her in 2001. A string of small but brilliant supporting appearances in comedy features like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, and Step Brothers followed. Luckily, a few sharp-eyed observers spied a keg of talent going largely untapped. In 2008, Marcia Shulman, then Fox’s head of casting, signed Hahn to a rare talent-holding deal. “She was doing the kind of comedy that reminded me of Lucille Ball,” Shulman said. “She is very approachable, she has a very positive, happy presence. She is a great physical comedian, and I think that is missing on TV.” Shulman was right, but if anyone deserves credit for recognizing what others didn’t, it’s writer and director Jill Soloway, who gave Hahn her first lead role in the acclaimed 2013 film Afternoon Delight. As an over- achieving mom and housewife who finds a— let’s call it creative—way to deal with a midlife crisis, Hahn was able to show there were layers to the laughs. “...She has an incredible way into the kind of authentic realness that made the careers of women like Diane Keaton back in the 1970s,” Soloway told The New York Times. “The industry has never really known how to handle a woman like that—a woman whose beauty is so intrinsically linked to her unique character.” Perhaps not fitting into a cinematic pigeonhole isn’t all bad. Hahn is one of the most game actors in the business, the personification of the acting ideal: free, open. She seems equipped to invest any character with warmth, sarcasm, humanity or a bit of ball-busting on an as-needed basis. While “free” could be an understatement for some of her roles in movies like We’re The Millers, Tomorrowland, Bad Words, and the upcoming Bad Moms, she’s just as good, if not even better, at caustic (Boeing-Boeing, her Broadway debut), grounded (Transparent) and...male (her role as Jennifer Barkley on Parks and Recreation was originally written for a man). If you’ve seen her in any of these roles, you’d have a tough time buying that an artist so willing to “go there” with such complete abandon and utter lack of vanity was ever self conscious or timid. But growing up, Hahn was the girl who was always apologizing, saying anything but what she truly meant in order to keep people (mostly her family) happy. She’s said that being able to stand up straight, look people in the eye and command her own space remain a bit of a challenge, even today. But it does get easier once you realize that your gift is who you are, and who you are is pretty much all you need. If Hollywood didn’t know what to do with Hahn in the beginning, she’s shown them now—just about anything.

The Fourth Wall #9: 'Treadstone' Producer Talks Explosive Action, Robert Ludlum, and Crossover Potential for the Bourne Spin-Off Series

"The Bourne Legacy," "Jason Bourne," and "Treadstone" producer Ben Smith joins me for Episode 9 of The Fourth Wall to talk about expanding the World of Jason Bourne in the Bourne spin-off series. Making for the perfect blend of "24" meets "Heroes," the series marks an almost decade long journey for Smith as he's had his heart set on expanding the world that Robert Ludlum created. Perhaps much of this influence comes from the involvement of "Heroes" creator Tim Kring, who Smith discussed collaborating with, and stunt coordinator from "The Bourne Ultimatum," but at the heart of it, what excited Smith the most was the opportunity to explore the mythology of not only the films but Ludlum's novels in order to tell very personal and interconnected stories that were affected by the geopolitical landscape of today. "The base that Ludlum created is very rich," said Smith, "and I think it's a perfect fit for television. You just have a lot more real estate to dive into a lot of different characters which is what we've done on 'Treadstone.'" For those unaware, "Treadstone" tells the origins of the secret government organization that led to the birth of Jason Bourne. Taking place in 1973 and present day, the series follows these sleeper agents from the Cicada Program (another program under the Treadstone umbrella) as they mysteriously begin to awaken around the globe ten years after audiences meet Jason Bourne in "The Bourne Identity." The prospect of crossing over "Treadstone" with Matt Damon's Jason Bourne or even Jeremy Renner's Aaron Cross is certainly something that would excite fans of the franchise and even Smith himself, however, it all comes down to what the story requires. "What's happening in the world of Bourne is independent of what's happening right now in 'Treadstone,'" said Smith. "There is crossover mythology, but there is no planned tie-in today." During my conversation with Smith, we discussed the long journey to creating "Treadstone," balancing character storytelling with that signature Bourne action, the work that went into the stunt choreography, his relationship with Ludlum's novels and the Bourne franchise as a whole, and actors he'd like to see play in the expansive Bourne sandbox. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message

Today's Guest: Milo Ventimiglia, actor, "Heroes," "This Is Us" Milo Ventimiglia, actor, Heroes, NBC Milo Ventimiglia is not your average save-the-world superhero, although he does play one, Peter Petrelli, on NBC’s hit series “Heroes.” In real life, he’s an ambitious actor and producer whose company, Divide Pictures, just completed a series of five animated holiday shorts available exclusively on the American Eagle Outfitters website. Milo narrated the first episode, “Home for the Holidays”; others feature the voices of Kristen Bell, Lil Jon, Adrianne Palicki, and Pete Wentz, the Fall Out Boy. Milo Ventimiglia Twitter • Order Heroes: Season 3 from Amazon.com BOB ANDELMAN/Mr. MEDIA: I hate to pimp for American Eagle Outfitters, but it seems appropriate here. I have to think that any fan of yours -- and “Gilmore Girls” for that matter -- is going to love “Home for the Holidays” because you play yourself. How much fun was that? MILO VENTIMIGLIA: It was a lot of fun. The “Home for the Holidays” tale was kind of a combination of stories between myself and Adam Green, the writer/director of “Winter Tales.” I was just thinking about different situations I’d find myself in, or that he’d find himself in, and came up with the tale of a guy who’s taking a really miserable plane ride home. ANDELMAN: Now, that’s never happened to you, has it? Order from Amazon.com by clicking the DVD above! VENTIMIGLIA: Not exactly. Like I said, it was a combination of stories between myself and Adam Green. ANDELMAN: How weird was it, though, to find yourself playing yourself and have this kid, I don’t want to give it too much away, but the kid has a little problem with reality, I guess? VENTIMIGLIA: Yeah, I guess, a little bit, a little problem. All he wants to do is relax, but he can’t do that. ANDELMAN: What’s a guy like you doing in the realm of animated holiday shorts? How did that come about? VENTIMIGLIA: It was just another opportunity to work with American Eagle Outfitters. We did one series of shorts with them earlier called “It’s a Mall World,” which I produced, and we just found a great partnership with them. And we pitched the idea of Claymation, and they’re really into it, so we developed a bunch of stories and made these classic tales our own. And what you get is five great shorts. MILO VENTIMIGLIA audio excerpt: "I think in a world where there are people with abilities, I’d take my character’s. He’s a sponge. He can soak up anything. But if I just had any ability, I’d want to be able to teleport. I could go have coffee in Paris if I wanted to and lunch in Italy, then be right back."  ANDELMAN: It’s a lot of fun. How did you get people like Pete Wentz and Kristen Bell to come on board? VENTIMIGLIA: We called up their agents, had excellent relationships, and once you pitched them the idea, they were into it. Kristen Bell, I called myself and said, “I’ve got this thing I’d love for you to work on,” and she was just like, “I’m in. Whatever you want to do, I’m in.” And then the same thing with Lil Jon, Adrianne, and we just kind of threw it out, and they were more than happy, more than excited, to be a part of it. ANDELMAN: What do you want to do next? If you’re kind of playing with this now, I’m guessing you want to go on to bigger and better in production… VENTIMIGLIA: I enjoy it all. I enjoy directing. I enjoy producing. I enjoy acting. And I take the opportunities that are presented to me when they come up. Of course, I’d love to direct a longer format; I’d love to produce a longer format. And there are a bunch of things that I am circling around, but anytime I’m involved in any one of those three, I can direct and you’re producing for my job, I’ll take it. ANDELMAN: We have to talk about “Heroes,” of course, don’t we? We can’t take live calls today, so I did the next best thing, and I solicited questions from friends of mine and fans of yours. VENTIMIGLIA: Alright. ANDELMAN: So these are coming from a few places here. Let’s start with this question from DigDog: “Did the writers’ strike hobble the show by forcing producers to end any of the storylines prematurely?” VENTIMIGLIA: I don’t think it hobbled us so much as it cut us short. The writers’ strike was one of those unfortunate things that stops production. Beyond the strike, you can’t write anything new. You can only produce what’s been written. We basically ran out of material. I think the producers, it was their intent to give some kind of a wrap-up to what became a very short season just so that people weren’t left with too many questions. In my opinion, it was a good thing to do to, hopefully, tie up a couple loose ends, and we leave people wanting a little bit more. This Is Us Season 1 DVD, starring Milo Ventimiglia. Order your copy today by clicking on the image above! ANDELMAN: This second season got hit by some criticism early on that it was taking too long to get to the meat. And then it seemed like those last couple weeks, the critics and the fans may have come around a little bit. VENTIMIGLIA: Yeah, they did. We had some problems early on, still working out problems toward the end, but I know the show started to get back to that same feeling, that same sentiment that we all worked very hard for. But it’s one of those things. You just gotta understand that a season is long. You’re making usually 24 episodes, so I think when there’s a little bit of a delay, there’s not that instant, rewarding scene or moment or episode, and people get impatient. So it’s finding that balance between giving and getting. ANDELMAN: It must be hard for both the writers and the actors to be on a show where the expectations are so high. You almost reach a point where, no matter what you do, you’re going to let people down. Is that the case? VENTIMIGLIA: Yeah. You’re damned if you do, you’re damned if you don’t. You just gotta know that, ultimately, the work that you’re doing, the work that you’re putting in, it’s your best efforts, and it’s everybody’s best effort. That being said, though, all those best efforts have to come together in sync. Otherwise, the show doesn’t have a heart. ANDELMAN: Before the writers’ strike set in, how much did you know of plot lines for your character going in? And how much do you think that may change going forward with the delay in getting back into production? VENTIMIGLIA: I knew quite a bit. I knew where we were headed, but I also had the luxury of not really having to follow too closely because Peter had amnesia. I went in for a meeting with Tim Kring before we started filming, and he said, “Peter can’t remember anything.” I said, “Okay, great. Let me know as I need to know stuff.” I just kind of waited around. Usually, you’re pretty eager to know where you’re headed. I had no idea where Peter was going to go, and it didn’t really matter at that point. Where we’re going to be going after, again, that’s all up in the air. I think the production team was taking into consideration the criticism we got and hopefully, wanting to get back on track to the same feel we had the first season. So I think things are going to switch up a little bit. ANDELMAN: Is there any question whether you’ll stay with the show? Eric, who wrote in, said that he had heard rumors that you didn’t necessarily want to continue. VENTIMIGLIA: Who said that? ANDELMAN: Eric. He’s one of the people who sent in some questions for you. Order your copy today by clicking on the DVD above! VENTIMIGLIA: Really? I’m a real guy, and I also have a contract that I hope to honor. So I’ll be on the show, I think, as long as they would have me and as long as I’m obligated to it and put my best work forward, and I’ll leave everything else up to time. I’ve got other ambitions, but when it comes to the show, and when we’re in production, that’s what I’m doing. ANDELMAN: Dr. Blogstein, who has a show on BlogTalkRadio, wanted to know this: “Are there considerations in taking a few episodes this coming season or next to go deeper into the back story and focus on your character’s parents as well as George Takei’s character and some of the older heroes?” VENTIMIGLIA: I think that was our intent -- to understand a little bit more. That’s always been the question. People want to know how did these abilities come about? The way the show’s been going -- the storyline -- it seems that there was a greater mystery as to why these people, how these people have these abilities. Again, that’s a lot up to the writers about what they’re looking to explore. And, of course, the actors, we can give our two cents in what we’d like to see, what we’d like to get into, but it’s ultimately up to the writers. MILO VENTIMIGLIA audio excerpt: "I went in for a meeting with Tim Kring before we started filming, and he said, 'Peter can’t remember anything.' I said, 'Okay, great. Let me know as I need to know stuff.' I just kind of waited around. Usually, you’re pretty eager to know where you’re headed. I had no idea where Peter was going to go, and it didn’t really matter at that point."  ANDELMAN: Sharon wants to know -- and remember, I didn’t write these questions -- if you’re not dating Hayden Panettiere, who are you dating? VENTIMIGLIA: Is my what? ANDELMAN: If you’re not dating Hayden… VENTIMIGLIA: My phone broke up. ANDELMAN: I’m sorry? VENTIMIGLIA: I said my phone had a little glitch for a second. ANDELMAN: Oh. Okay. Sharon’s question is, “If you’re not dating Hayden Panettiere, who are you dating?” VENTIMIGLIA: It’s one of those funny questions that… ANDELMAN: I’m glad I didn’t ask. VENTIMIGLIA: I think when you’re young and in this industry, and you work as much as I do, you try to spend time with people that want to spend time with you. That’s about all you can do. ANDELMAN: Alright. Last question: Mimi asks, “What powers would you want in real life?” VENTIMIGLIA: I think in a world where there are people with abilities, I’d take my character’s. He’s a sponge. He can soak up anything. But if I just had any ability, I’d

Hugh Howey, thank you so much for joining me back on The Writer Files to update your file. Hugh Howey: Hey, it’s good to be back, man. Kelton Reid: So for listeners who may not be familiar with you and your story, who are you, and what is your area of expertise as a writer? Hugh Howey: That’s a good question. Who am I? That could be a couple hours there, and I don’t even know if I’d have an answer. People think of me as a writer, but that’s the last six years of my life. Before that I was a vagabond, a sailor and lived on the water, and spent 10 years as a yacht captain. So that’s kind of who I am. I’ve been an avid reader my whole life, always wanted to write a novel. When I finally finished a book, I got hooked on that and started writing a lot, and my seventh work, Wool, took off and allowed me to write full time. I did that for the last six years or so. I’m going to continue writing, but now, I’m moving back onto a boat to get back to my roots, which is traveling the world by water. Kelton Reid: It’s an amazing story, honestly. You’re a prolific author. You’ve got your hands in a lot of different genres as well. Where can we find your writing for starters? Hugh Howey: The best place is Amazon. I’ve put everything in Kindle Unlimited because I do write a lot, and I like for people who are paying the $9.99 a month or whatever its costs to get to read everything without paying another penny. I do publish a lot, so it works out for me. Also, major bookstores carry Wool usually, or you can get any of my books in. My website s a great just to see what’s available. It’s just HughHowey.com. Kelton Reid: What are you presently working on? Hugh Howey: I’m bouncing back and forth between a fiction series called Beacon 23 and a nonfiction series that’s kind of self-help and travel log called Wayfinding. The Beacon 23 series, it’s weird. It’s another one of those short stories like Wool that took off. I’m telling this story in discrete parts. Each one has its own arc. Kind of like a season of TV, each episode tells a story, and people are eating them up at 99 cents each. And Warren Ellis, who I love to death, a graphic novelist and author, has become a fan of the series, and my film agent’s getting calls about the film rights. So it’s having a very similar trajectory that Wool had, which is kind of weird for lightning to strike twice like this. Kelton Reid: That’s amazing, and your sci-fi series, The “Silo Series,” is amazing. That’s the one that Wool kind of kicked off, right? And now Sand, the dystopian sci-fi novel that you wrote, is actually being adapted, is that right? Did I read that correctly? Hugh Howey: Yeah. It got picked up by Imperative. They re the team behind the relaunch of the Heroes TV show, “Heroes Reborn,” and I just met with them at Comic-Con and got to spend a couple days hanging out with them. Just a great group of people. I’m flattered when someone options something for film, but Wool has been with Ridley Scott for a couple years. They’ve written screenplays for that. It’s just really flattering. But however excited people are and they say they really want to make something, I don’t get my hopes up. I don’t assume that anything is going to go into production. I’d rather be surprised when it does than sit there and think about it and hound my agent for updates. It’s just better for me to keep writing. Kelton Reid: Absolutely. So let’s talk about writing and your productivity a little bit. How much time per day would you say you’re reading or doing research for projects? The Importance of Starting Each Day the Right Way Hugh Howey: Research, I don’t do direct. My research is very indirect. I read because I want to learn. I’ve been like that my whole life. I mentioned when I read nonfiction, I read veraciously. So all of what I read ends up getting distilled, mixed up, and then ends up in my writing. So even though I mostly write fiction, I want to write about the human condition and satirize popular culture and things like that. That comes from all my nonfiction reading. Probably two or three hours a day I spend reading, and some days, I can have an eight-hour day of just reading. The same thing with writing. I generally try to do two or three hours a day of writing, and sometimes I’ll have an eight-, 10-, or 12-hour day of writing where I pound out 5,000, 7,000 words in a day. Kelton Reid: Before you get into a writing session, do you have any pre-game rituals or practices? Hugh Howey: Yeah, but I don’t know if it has anything to do with the writing. I just live a healthy lifestyle. When I get up in the morning, I have a healthy breakfast of some yogurt with some raisins in it. Then I try to do the same thing every day, so I’m not having to make decisions. I’m not taxing my brain. It’s the same reason I think that I wear the same T-shirt and cargo shorts every single day and flip-flops. I do an exercise routine called The Five Tibetans, which is like yoga. It wakes me up better than a cup of coffee. It only takes about 10 minutes, and it really keeps you in shape. Then I open my laptop and start into whatever story I’m in progress. Kelton Reid: Nice. Do you have a most productive time of day and/or locale for getting into a session? Hugh Howey: Yeah, the morning for me. I’m most creative in the morning, but it’s also a matter of getting a lot of work done before I start checking email and get distracted with the business of writing. That doesn’t just come from self-publishing. I’ve published with traditional publishers as well. Having success as a writer means doing a lot of non-writing activities, supplemental stuff. Kelton Reid: Yeah. Do you have a favorite place to write? Why You Need to Learn to Hit Publish from Anywhere Hugh Howey: No. I can write anywhere. Yesterday, I’m at a family reunion, and I’m sitting at a table with a lot of conversations, a lot going on. I wrap up a work and hit publish and published right there from a dining room table. I’ve published while up on a panel. Right before the panel started, I was putting the finishing touches on a piece. They were doing introductions, and I’m hitting publish under the table. Sitting on curbs, waiting on taxis, on a book tour — Sand, that entire novel I wrote while in Europe on book tour. I wrote that book across nine different countries without a word of that rough draft written in the U.S. That’s the dedication you have to have. You can’t have an excuse. “Well, I’m traveling today, so I’m not going to write,” or “I’m doing this today, so it’s okay if I don’t write today.” My attitude is, if you take a day off, you’re giving yourself an excuse to two, or three, or four days off. Kelton Reid: Yeah. So as a world traveler, are you a writer who can stick on headphones? Do you like to listen to music while you write, or do you prefer silence or white noise? How to Alleviate Your Natural Self-Doubts Hugh Howey: I prefer silence or white noise, even crowds like cafes or airports, but I just posted on my website a few songs that I like to listen to when I’m having natural self-doubts that come from being creative. They’re very heavy-hitting songs just to fire you up and get the adrenaline going. So sometimes I use music to motivate me to have a powerful writing session, but I don’t like to listen to music while I’m writing. Kelton Reid: Got it. I think I already know the answer to this next one, but do you believe in writer’s block? Hugh Howey: I don’t. What I believe is that our writing varies in quality depending on what we’ve consumed, our chemical state, what’s going on in our life, how distracted we are, things that we’re anticipating might happen, how well the last writing session went. All of those things increase or decrease our expectation for how good our writing is going to be if we started clicking our keyboard. Sometimes we get into a mindset where we know we’re going to write crap, so we’d rather sit there and not write anything. I think we have to embrace the fact that we’re going to write poorly at times. When we feel that hesitation and that lack of confidence, that should motivate us to really pour the words out, prime the pump, get back to the good stuff, and trust the editing process. Kelton Reid: Absolutely. Are you still working on a MacBook Air? Hugh Howey: Yeah, I prefer the Air. I might be switching to this new Dell laptop they ve got out, which is a smaller form factor. I’ve not been too overwhelmed with the updates to the Mac OS. I’ve played with Windows 10. I kind of liked that, so I might be switching. Kelton Reid: Interesting. So what software do you use most for your writing? Hugh Howey: I usually use Microsoft Word. Kelton Reid: Do you have any organizational hacks since you’re constantly on the move? Hugh Howey: Not really. Organizational hacks. No, I’m sloppy. I have a Word document that I’ll keep open for notes, and I just kind of pile in notes for a series in there. It’s ugly, but it works for me. I’ve used it to write book series with 400,000 plus words across them — a lot of foreshadowing and a lot of plot points and characters — and somehow it all works. I’ve tried using Scrivener and stuff that have those tools built in, but I find myself playing with the tools instead of writing. I’ve never gotten over the learning curve for those things to be useful to me. Kelton Reid: Do you have any best practices for beating procrastination? Why Writing Is Like Exercise Hugh Howey: Yeah. Sit down, and it’s like exercise. There’s so many reasons to not get down on the floor and do push-ups. Your body does not want to be taxed. It doesn’t want to feel that. As soon as you feel it, you have to say, “I’m not going to let that control me. I’m going to choose what I’m going to do with my life and not let my inherent laziness, my desire to conserve calories, or whatever is going on in our bodies that makes us want to curl up in a ball and not attack the task before us.” Open up the document, turn off the Internet, and start writing. If you’re not sure what happens next in the story, skip to the part of the story that you know is going to happen. Start writing there. Just start writing about your character, or if you know the next scene takes place in a bar, just describe the bar. You’re going to delete every bit of that, but describe every facet of that bar — what the jukebox looks like, what the street noise is, every weird detail that aren’t going to end up in your story. As soon as you start doing that, you’re going to find that you’re able to get back into the flow of the plot. Kelton Reid: Very nice. My final question on workflow stuff is how do you unplug at the end of a long day? Hugh Howey: My favorite thing is to get by the water or on the water. Go to the beach. If I can have a nice meal looking out over the water, if I can go for a swim or take a paddle board out, anything like that energizes me. Just chill out with a book and read. Kelton Reid: Just a quick pause to mention that The Writer Files is brought to you by the Rainmaker Platform, the complete website solution for content marketers and online entrepreneurs. Find out more and take a free 14-day test drive at Rainmaker.FM/Platform. So let’s talk about creativity. How do you define creativity in your own words? How Writers Can Fine Tune Their Creativity Hugh Howey: I think creativity is not so much as creating something that’s never been done before. It’s the free expression of a combination of things that we’ve absorbed from elsewhere. To be absolutely creative is almost to be avant-garde, to do stuff that’s almost absurd. There’s some value in that, absurdity for the sake of complete newness or shock value. For me, true creativity is seeing the individual human like a filter, like a coffee filter. You push all this stuff through: popular culture, life experiences, upbringing, genetic makeup. What drips out is the way they distill all that knowledge and all those experiences. It’s different for every person, and people are creative in ways they don’t even appreciate. The way they approach their work, they might think that’s not creativity. There are things that they do in their workflow, how they organize their desk space, or how they organize their day — I see those as expressions of creativity. I think everyone is creative in some ways, and we need to figure out what ways we enjoy being creative and do more of it. It gets us in tune with ourselves. Kelton Reid: When do you feel the most creative? Hugh Howey: After I’ve written something. So when I’m writing, I tend to feel like it’s kind of garbage, but when I’m done with the writing session, I go back and read some stuff. Or I’m revising. That’s when I feel like I don’t completely hate what I’ve just done. Kelton Reid: Do you have a creative muse at the moment? Hugh Howey: Not really. I’m going through a lot of change in my life right now, and some of it is very stressful. It’s sad that that’s inspiration, but the best stuff I’ve ever written has been dealing with huge losses of my life. I’m generally an upbeat, perfectly happy, even-keel person, but the best stuff I’ve ever written is when I’ve lost people in my life or lost a beloved pet. I guess that the tortured artist cliché, there’s something to that because you tap into an emotional well that’s difficult to tap into when you’re just content and happy. Kelton Reid: In your own words, what do you think makes a writer truly great? Where the True Magic of Writing Springs From Hugh Howey: Having read a lot. Actually before having read a lot, I would say having lived and experienced a lot. I think you have to fill yourself with knowledge and experiences before you have something really wonderful to write. What we end up writing is kind of a greatest hits collection of our ideas, our thoughts, and our vocabulary. In order to have a greatest hits collection, you have to have a huge body of work that you absorb. It’s somewhat like photography, something I’m passionate about. The secret to photography is learning lighting and the controls of the camera and framing and all these tricks of the trade, but the magic comes from taking thousands of photos and then having an eye that recognizes the dozen in there that are truly spectacular. When we write, we have thousands of ideas, thousands of word choices, thousands of word combinations and sentence flow options, and the quality of a writer and the skill comes from knowing out of those thousands, which handful are viable options. Kelton Reid: Do you have a few favorite authors that you’re reading at the moment? Hugh Howey: I tend not to follow writers. I tend to follow subjects. Nonfiction makes it difficult to follow writers. Rick Adkins wrote a World War II Trilogy that I really liked, and I’ll read anything that Bill Bryson writes. I just read McCullough’s biography of the Wright Brothers. I’ve really enjoyed his work, but it’s rare for me to find … Stephen Pinker is a guy who, anything he writes, I’ll pick up and dabble. With nonfiction, it’s not like with a fiction author where you’re going to get a book a year. You might be likely to get one every five years. It’s hard to follow an individual author like that. Kelton Reid: Yeah. Well, I found your original writer’s file to be infinitely quotable, but do you have a favorite quote yourself? Hugh Howey: I don’t know. One that I’ve come back to time and again — and it’s so cliché, everyone uses it — but maybe there’s a reason for that. I’ll get the exact quote wrong, but I’ll paraphrase. I’m pretty sure Hemingway said it. “Writing is easy. You just sit down in front of your typewriter and bleed.” I love that because it tells me that writing was difficult for him, and it reminds me that it’s not supposed to be easy. The same thing is true of exercise, and diet, and anything worth doing in life. We should look for the things that are most difficult and then attack those things. We tend to live the path of least resistance. That’s defined to preserve calories, preserve our energy, and find ways to not tackle long-term goals and be fulfilled deeply in life. I found fulfillment through listening to my body, figuring out what it least wants to do, and then doing that thing. That quote kind of inspires me to do that. Kelton Reid: Nice. Couple fun questions for you. Do you have a favorite literary character? Hugh Howey: That’s a good question. Maybe growing up I loved The Stainless Steel Rat. That character really resonated with me. Kelton Reid: If you could choose one author from any era to sit down and have an all-expense paid dinner, who would you choose? Hugh Howey: Oh, it’d be William Shakespeare for sure. Kelton Reid: I’m always curious about this answer, but why Shakespeare? Hugh Howey: I like to tell everybody, “Hey, it was definitely William Shakespeare’s. Stop with the theories. I know for a fact it was him.” Kelton Reid: Do you have a writer’s fetish? Any good luck charms or any weird collectibles? Hugh Howey: No. All I really need is my laptop. I do feel kind of naked if I don’t have it with me. I grab it in the middle of the night to make notes. I try to carry it with me everywhere. I will say, as a reader, that I’ve upgraded my Kindle to the Kindle Voyage, and that’s such a sexy reading device. I feel I do not like not having that thing with me. With that in my pocket, I’ve got every book that I own and access to every ebook out there. I fetishize the heck out of that thing. Kelton Reid: Nice. So who or what has been your greatest teacher? Hugh Howey: Literally, Dr. Dennis Goldsbury, my English professor at the College of Charleston. I was a physics major when I had him for a prereq and loved his class so much that I made sure I had my 102 from him the next semester. Then I asked him what he was teaching the semester after that. He was the hardest teacher I’ve ever had. Getting an A from him was the most rewarding challenge in my collegiate career. I started taking all of his classes, and soon he was like, “Look, you have to be an English major to take these 4000-level classes.” I probably would’ve written something at some point in my life anyway because it’s been a dream of mine for a long time, but I wouldn’t be the writer that I am today without his guidance. Kelton Reid: Can you offer any advice to fellow writers on how to keep the ink flowing and the cursor moving? Why You Should Be a Tourist in Your Own Town Hugh Howey: Yeah. What are you doing to have novel experiences? Without that, you’re just not going to be inspired to write. Find a way to be a tourist in your hometown. Look at towns that are a short drive away, and get out on the weekend and do something. Talk to strangers. If you see an old man with a military service hat on, sit down on the bench beside him, and ask him his story. Observe the world. Carry around a notebook. Describe strangers. Describe settings. Writing is not something you do in front of your laptop. Writing is something that you do all day long, and the laptop is just the place where you dump that out. Kelton Reid: Where can fellow scribes connect with you out there? Hugh Howey: You can find me on Twitter at @HughHowey and on my website. Once I’m on the boat in another two and a half weeks, I’ll be moving onto the catamaran, and I’ll be at sea a lot. I’ll hopefully still be able to keep in touch when I’m in port, but I don’t know how much I’ll be accessible like I have been for the last five or six years. Kelton Reid: That’s really exciting. Where is your first destination? Hugh Howey: Well, I’m starting in St. Francis Bay, South Africa, and my first port of call will be Cape Town. I’ll stay there for a few weeks, and then I’m just going to spend a couple of months total in South Africa. Early October, we’ll head to St. Helena, which is in the middle of the south Atlantic and then Ascension Island, which is where Napoleon was held captive. From there, either Brazil or Barbados and then up the Caribbean chain into the Bahamas and Florida. Kelton Reid: Amazing. Well, we wish you a safe journey, and I’m sure that will spark some more really inspiring stories and writing. So best of luck to you, sir. Hugh Howey: Thanks, man. Well, if something bad happens to me, it’ll probably boost book sales just for a brief moment with any obituary or news mention. My heirs have that to look forward to. Kelton Reid: Well, I’ll knock on wood over here, and thank you so much for stopping by. Hugh Howey: All right. Thanks, man. Kelton Reid: Take care. Thanks for tuning into the show. In the words of Mr. Howey himself, you are a startup. The next great business is you. Tim Kring is best-known for creating megahit television shows such as Touched, Heroes and Crossing Jordan, but the process that generates these tremendous programs is subtle. Perhaps Tim's best work is yet to come—in multimedia and Internet platforms. No matter what he is creating, Tim relies on a felt sense and a process that draws in material beyond his intellectual grasp. Tune in and listen to Barnet and Freeman discuss the creative process that has attracted 76 million fans to Tim Kring's work on this week's edition of Cutting Edge Consciousness.

We start Feedback Friday with thoughts on "Touch" on FOX, created by Tim Kring of "Heroes" and starring Kiefer Sutherland. At least a couple of listeners liked it much more than we did. We also touch on "Alcatraz," "Terriers," and "Misfits." And our "Downton Abbey" love prompts a recommendation of the BBC's 2004 miniseries "North & South." We also share feedback on our "Hawaii 101" show, and a pair of music recommendations that could not be more different.
