Welcome back to School Counseling Simplified! Today, we're diving into paperless individual counseling strategies—low-prep, hands-on activities that are perfect for busy counselors who need quick, engaging solutions. Next week, I'll be discussing digital resources, but today, I'm focusing on interactive, in-person techniques that increase student engagement. Engagement is a key factor in helping students meet their counseling goals, as it keeps them interested and actively involved in the learning process. As counselors, our role is short-term and solution-focused, so let's explore some creative ways to make each session both effective and memorable. Hands-On Activities for Student Engagement 1. Role Play with Figurines Use toys like dolls, cars, dinosaurs, or any small objects available. Helps students externalize feelings and start conversations naturally. Provides a non-threatening way to discuss emotions. 2. Role Play with Chairs The "Empty Chair Technique" allows students to talk to an imaginary person, which is helpful for grief counseling or conflict resolution. Students can rehearse conversations and gain new perspectives. Can also be used with two students switching seats to see different viewpoints. 3. Play Dough or Modeling Clay Great for younger students as a hands-on way to express emotions. Can be used to create emotional faces or role-play scenarios. Simply playing with the dough can be a stress reliever. 4. Ball Toss Activity A beach ball works well since it can be deflated when not in use. Add conversation starter stickers to each section of the ball. Toss the ball back and forth to encourage discussion. 5. Lego Provides a distraction that encourages sharing. Helps ease intimidation in one-on-one sessions. Can be used for role-playing or as an analogy (e.g., "building blocks of friendship"). 6. Jenga Write discussion prompts on the blocks to personalize the activity. Can be used as an analogy for building up trust, relationships, or personal growth. 7. Soda Can Anger Activity Shake a can of soda as students describe situations that make them angry. When opened, it creates a visual representation of anger exploding. Engaging, memorable, and effective in anger management sessions. 8. Volcano Experiment Use clay, baking soda, and vinegar to demonstrate how anger builds and erupts. Great for anger management groups or individual sessions. 9. Dry Erase Boards or Etch A Sketch Teach negative thought patterns and growth mindset. Have students write negative thoughts and erase them to symbolize change. 10. Music Playlists Have students create a playlist of songs that help them with different emotions (sadness, anger, calming, motivation). Can be a great coping strategy or "get to know you" activity. 11. Food as a Conversation Starter Use different colored snacks to represent emotions. Be mindful of allergens and sugar content. 12. Plants as a Growth Analogy Students can care for a plant over time, learning how friendships and personal growth require nurturing. Can serve as an attendance motivator or a take-home gift. I hope you found these ideas helpful and feel inspired to try them in your counseling sessions! Let me know how they work for you—reply to my emails or send me a message on Instagram. Coming right out of Jesus' call for his disciples to abide by remaining in His love, he prepares the disciples for the reality that some of the fruit they will bear from abiding will be a share in His suffering through persecution. Jesus tells tells them and us that, like he was persecuted because of His Words, His walk, and His witness, we too should expect to experience the same kind of suffering as our words, walk, and witness is transformed by His life and love as we abide in Him. In the same breath, Jesus further complicates things by telling them he is leaving them. So, how will they face persecution? And how can we today?

Bible Reading: Romans 6:11-13; 12:1-2"Grandma, let's play a guessing game," Aiden said after his parents dropped him off at his grandmother's house for the afternoon. "I'll tell you a riddle about what I have in my backpack, and you try to guess what it is. Here goes. I come in lots of colors. I am constantly changing. You've most likely played with me. Guess what I am!""Hmm." Grandma rubbed her forehead. "Can I have another hint?""Nope. Time's up!" Aiden reached into his bag and pulled out some plastic containers. "It's playdough!""That was a good one!" said Grandma. "I suppose you're going to want to take that stuff out of the containers now, aren't you?" Aiden smiled and nodded, and for the next hour, Grandma and Aiden squished and molded the playdough into every shape they could think of. "Yesterday I looked online to find facts about playdough for a project at school, which made me think to bring some here," Aiden said as he rolled a piece of yellow dough across the table. "Did you know that it was first invented in the 1930s as wallpaper cleaner? Or that over three billion containers of playdough have been sold? That's enough playdough to stretch all the way to the moon!" Aiden put the last piece of dough in place and showed off his creation. "Look, a hamburger and French fries!" "Mmm, yummy!" Grandma pinched the end of her ball of blue dough to make a fin. "I made a blue whale.""Cool!" said Aiden. "I love playdough. You can make anything with it!"Grandma nodded. "Yes, it's fun to play with. But did you know we can learn from it too?" Aiden shook his head. "God's children should be like playdough in His hands," said Grandma. "Playdough is soft and workable, allowing people to shape it however they think is best. And we need to be the same with God, letting Him shape our attitudes and desires so we'll be more like Jesus.""So, just like playdough, God will mold us the way He knows is best?" asked Aiden.Grandma nodded. "We can trust Him to shape us into the people He wants us to be--people who reflect the love of Jesus to others." -Lucinda J. RollingsHow About You?Are you allowing God to shape you into the person He wants you to be? Or are you trying to conform to those around you or hold on to your old selfish ways? If you know Jesus as your Savior, God is working in your heart to make you more like Him. As He molds you and shapes you, He will help you turn away from sin and show His love to others. Trust Him to help you let go of sinful habits and make you more like Jesus.Today's Key Verse:Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we all are the work of your hands. (CSB) (Isaiah 64:8 )Today's Key Thought:Let God mold you

Pruning To Prosper - Clutter, Money, Meals and Mindset for the Catholic Mom
Opening Bible verse: Luke 6:12-13 There are passages in the Bible meant to simply give us instructions on how to live and there are passages in the Bible meant to be an example to us on how to live. This opening Bible verse is an example Jesus gave us on taking a break. To go be alone to pray. When the noise of life is drowning out the voice of God, you've gone too long without connecting with Him. In today's episode I talk about working with a client (a 4th grader) and her mom to declutter her bedroom and create a calm corner. For those times when you or your child needs a break to regulate emotions, here are some ideas for creating a calm corner for your own child and ideas for yourself. 1. Find a quiet place in your home 2. Get a comfy chair or cushion for the floor 3. Incorporate the senses. Artwork that is calming like religious or nature. Soft blankets, pillows or squash mallows! Good scents like fresh or dried lavender or a scented candle or diffuser. Noise cancelling headphones or headphones to listen to music. Perhaps a fountain or CD of nature sounds. 4. Fidgets for young and old. Playdough, slime, a hair brush, poppers, google and you will find a ton! 5. Coloring book. 6. Rosary beads and devotional books/journals 7. Fresh flowers or some other reminder to breathe. Lastly, outside your home...walk barefoot in the grass, over rocks or take a swing on the swing set. Christmas and the holiday season is a crucial time for toy retailers, and hopes will be high for sales to return to pre-pandemic levels. But with the rising cost of living, we find out if families will be cutting back on toy spending this year - and look at the toys topping the popularity charts. We'll also find out how much does TV and film influence the types of toys in demand. Frederique Tutt from market research company NPD group explains the trends in toy sales, and how the type of toys that people are buying is changing. Elizabeth Hotson visits the DreamToys event in London, organised by the toy retailers association. She speaks to Paul Reader, the chair of the DreamToys selection committee about what's making the top 10 toys list this year. Hedley Barnes, senior vice president for International from Spin Master, the company behind both the Paw Patrol TV series and toys, explains the valuable link between the show and the merchandise. Also on the list are Rainbow High Dolls – Sarah Taylor is managing director, UK and Ireland, for MGA entertainment, the company behind the dolls. She tells Elizabeth why diversity, which they champion, appeals to families. And Alan Simpson, chair of the toy retailers association, says he expects a lot of the ‘old favourites' like Lego, Barbie, Monopoly and Play Dough to still be really popular.
