Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) make “The Ascent” as we discuss this Odd Couple of an episode featuring the pairings of Odo/Quark and Jake/Nog. We enjoy the continued dynamic between Odo and Quark, we can't help but laugh at Odo's Gumby-esque broken leg, we speculate that DS9 is told from Rom's POV and we ponder if Star Trek is considered with the future anymore. Matthew asks if Rom is Forrest Gump and Jo rants about Nog and Jake's flat. As always, be prepared that spoilers may be lurking around every corner just like Garak on Empok Nor.Subscribe for weekly recaps of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, follow us online at @TerokNoir on Twitter for silly memes and polls and contact us by e-mail at teroknoirpod@gmail.com
Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) discuss “Things Past” as we take a look at a difficult moment in Odo's past. We praise the writing and directing of the episode, we celebrate the deep character study of Odo and we analyze what the writer is saying about structures of law and justice. Matthew derails every one of Jo's segues and Jo loves a good villain. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) “Let He Who Is Without Sin…” go to Risa as we pod about Worf and his wild antics in this episode. We talk about Worf and sports for a surprisingly long time, we argue that maybe Leeta shouldn't have told Bashir about Rom right after breaking up with the good doctor and of course we talk about Curzon Dax dying from Snu Snu. Matthew explains the problem with Star Wars and Jo is just happy that Worf isn't bi/pan-phobic, he's just a jealous lover. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) endure “Trials and Tribble-ations” as we return to the past alongside the Defiant crew. We praise the technological achievement of this episode, we indulge in the cuteness of the nostalgia and we compare the nostalgia of this episode of that of Picard S3 while having a prolonged conversation about how all IP content is anchored in nostalgia and is unable to grow beyond it. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) accept “The Assignment” as we crown this our favorite Keiko episode. We argue that the writing and acting from Rosalind Chao gives us the best version of Keiko and best Keiko performance, we track Rom's ascension to the day shift and Jo has a theory about why she loves theorizing about the O'Brien polycule. Matthew asks just how rough Morn's life is that he's at the bar when it opens and Jo questions Keiko's pronunciation of the word “basil”. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) ask the question War, what is it good for on “Nor the Battle to the Strong”. We celebrate the acting from Cirroc Lofton and others, we appreciate the ER-esque pacing in the hospital scenes and we discuss the 1940's era storyline and acting from guest stars as we look at what this episode is doing when it comes to military propaganda. Matthew asks if the dude who shot himself in the foot had a solid escape plan and Jo rants about Jake's writing career path. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) are “Looking for par'Mach in all the Wrong Places” on this week's episode. We enjoy the three different “couple” storylines in this episode, we talk about how down bad Dax was for Worf and Worf was for Grilka, and talk about the “work husband/work wife” dynamic of Miles and Kira and of course, Jo runs rampant with wild polyamorous speculation. Matthew asks if Worf is written better on TNG and Jo rants about Keiko totally being fine with Miles and Kira having feelings for each other. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) board “The Ship” as we talk about this greatest generation-esque war episode. We speculate about which member of the DS9 is the one to go to for illegal drugs, we praise the thrilling nature of this episode and we don't quite care for the war propaganda that is inherent in this episode. Matthew asks how much coke do surgeons do before surgery and Jo shares way too much about her personal life. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) try to avoid the “Apocalypse Rising” as we dive into the season 5 premier! We talk all things Klingon, we question if there are missing scenes that would better explain the events of the episode and we debate if this was really the best episode to have as a season premier. Matthew stayed up all night in Las Vegas and Jo rants about the hubris of the Jedi orderAs always, be prepared that spoilers may be lurking around every corner just like Garak on Empok Nor.Subscribe for weekly recaps of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, follow us online at @TerokNoir on Twitter for silly memes and polls and contact us by e-mail at teroknoirpod@gmail.com
Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) repair the “Broken Link” as we join Odo on his journey to the Founders home world. We chronicle recreational crimes the DS9 crew has carried out while still being in Starfleet, we compare representation as tokenism in Star Trek and Marvel vs representation as experience in books, films and other #OwnVoices media and we observe how this show suggests a genocide on the founders at the same time as the show X-Men 97 portrays a genocide while our Twitter feeds are full of images from Gaza and protests around the country. Matthew wonders why Garak is in this episode and Jo somehow manages in an episode about Odo to speculate about the O'Brien polycule.
Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) theorize about Julian Bashir's “Body Parts” as we discuss the episode that launched a thousand fan fics. We've talked about our pod ending early, but this really is an episode that might shut down the pod because Matthew has finally had it with Jo's theories about the crew. In this episode, Jo theorizes about trans Julian Bashir, she ships the threesome between Miles, Keiko and Kira and she asks if the show could have given us just one more “Brunt, FCA”. Matthew questions the logic and quality of Starlet medicine and we talk about the protests at Columbia University.
Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) are very loose on this weeks pod as we discuss “The Quickening” We dissect Bashir's wide eyed frontier doctor persona that reappears in this episode, we analyze how this episode presents “both sides” of the issue of physician assisted end of life care and we briefly talk about the first two episodes of Discovery S5. Beware of spoilers. Matthew announces his candidacy for president of the United States and Jo rants about the Federation refusing to leave the Gamma Quadrant alone. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) pod “To the Death”! We wholeheartedly enjoy this wonderfully fun episode, we celebrate the introduction of Jeffrey Combs' Weyoun and compare his role in DS9 to Q on TNG and we look ahead to S5 of Star Trek Discovery. Matthew speculates who on the crew has been to a Klingon strip club and Jo rants about missing the Pacific Ocean. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) record our pod “For The Cause” as we talk about mother fucking Eddington and The Maquis. We relitigate the validity of The Maquis' position and justification for their “terrorist” actions, we consider how this episode complicates the relationship between Ben and Kassidy and even though we hate him, we have to give it up to Eddington for absolutely, completely wrecking Sisko in this episode. Matthew asks if there's a lot of promiscuity in Federation penal colonies and Jo rants about the whole Garak and Ziyal “thing” As always, be prepared that spoilers may be lurking around every corner just like Garak on Empok Nor.Subscribe for weekly recaps of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, follow us online at @TerokNoir on Twitter for silly memes and polls and contact us by e-mail at teroknoirpod@gmail.com
Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) meet “The Muse” and we wish she would leave and never be heard of again. Just like this episode. We talk about everything we can to avoid talking about this episode including name dropping elder millennial shit like AskJeeves, Walkmans and Game Gears, we argue about nostalgia and the Enterprise D and we appreciate/elevate authentic, real life experiences over manufactured media we are fed on our devices. Also, we do talk about the episode itself. Eventually. Matthew rants about Paramount + and Jo speculates about the sexuality of everyone on Lwaxana's husband's planet. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) gaze into a “Shattered Mirror” as we return to the Mirror Universe with Jennifer Sisko. We praise Cirroc Lofton's acting in this episode, we analyze all of Ben Sisko's actions that have led to this single episode and we revel in the hilarity of this ridiculous but fun episode of Star Trek. We both wonder if Sisko has the heighest kill count of any Federation Captain and Jo rants about how much she loves tall women. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) do “Hard Time” as we join Miles O'Brien for the WORST virtual reality experience of his life. We compare the prison system in this episode to the American prison system and would you believe, we are not fans, we cast DS9 crew members as the characters from Top Gun and we talk about just how dark, this extremely dark episode of Star Trek gets. Matthew asks if O'Brien has the heart of a killer and Jo rants about how deliciously cunty Richard Chamberlain is in The Count of Monte Cristo. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) question the “Rules of Engagement” as we discuss another episode of Law and Order: DS9. We debate if Worf should have even been on trial in the first place, discuss other legal episodes and legal shows and we stare deep into your eyes as we ask if you've ever seen the wormhole open? Matthew asks if O'Brien has seen some shit in his military career and Jo rants about modern Star Trek/Star Wars writers being inspired by Star Trek/Star Wars. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) plan our own “Ascension” as we talk Emissary's, religion, and marriage. We explore how this episode talks about but also avoids talking about religion, the marriage between Miles and Keiko and Miles and Bashir and we talk about how hot Chris Pine is. Matthew asks if there is any funnier character than Worf in Star Trek and Jo rants about temporal, timey wimey, shenanigans. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) join the “Bar Association” as we, along with all other workers of the world, unite! We spend a surprising, yet unsurprising amount of time talking about oo-mox, we take note of which DS9 crew member is pro-union vs anti-union and we have a long discussion about unions as we celebrate our favorite union man, Rom. Matthew doesn't kink shame, he kink questions and Jo rants about corporate bootlickers. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) hang out with the “Sons of Mogh” as we talk Star Trek siblings! We avoid addressing the weird racial issues brought up in this episode the way Worf avoids acknowledging he has a son, we debate ethics and consent around Kurn's memory being erased and we get excited about the flirty fighting between Dax and Worf. Matthew rants about Libertarian Worf and Jo asks if Sarek, Spock's father, is the Nick Cannon of Star Trek.As always, be prepared that spoilers may be lurking around every corner just like Garak on Empok Nor.Subscribe for weekly recaps of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, follow us online at @TerokNoir on Twitter for silly memes and polls and contact us by e-mail at teroknoirpod@gmail.com
Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) attempt to “Return to Grace” as we join Kira and Dukat on this two hander episode. We celebrate the incredible chemistry between Kira and Dukat and Nana Visitor and Marc Alaimo, we chart the character progression of Dukat throughout the series and again make a case for why Dukat is one of if not THE best Star Trek villain. Matthew asks what is the point of Ziyal as a character and Jo educates Matthew on the Wolverine/Cyclops/Jean Grey throuple. Also, we tease a possible future For All Mankind episode. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) try to avoid the “Crossfire” as we discuss this week of “sad boi Odo” theater. We discuss romance and unsuccessful crushes in Star Trek, enjoy the development of Odo and Quark's unlikely friendship and spend an awful lot of time talking about how much we love the show Grand Designs. Matthew once again asks about the state of security on Deep Space 9 and Jo rants about Kira's boring boyfriends. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) head to the “Homefront” and find “Paradise Lost”. We embrace the introduction of Joseph Sisko, we question Admiral Leyton's plan to take over Earth and we get back into our “critiquing the Federation/Starfleet as settler colonialists” bag as we analyze what this episode is saying about land, who claims it and how it is “protected.” Also we talk about 9/11 a surprising amount. Matthew asks if you can catch an STD in a holoprogram and Jo rants about exploding consoles on starships.
Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) join “Our Man Bashir” on a secret mission in the holosuite. We talk all things Julian Bashir and James Bond as we have polarizing viewing experiences on this parody episode, we debate if Eddington is responsible for this fiasco and we look at a list of the actors who ALMOST played James Bond on screen. Matthew rants about storage capacity on DS9 and Jo asks if Bashir has a praise kink. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) do a little bit of cave robbing on our search for “The Sword of Kahless.” In this Worf heavy episode, we analyze how his “bi-racial” identity is explored in this episode, we discuss our own relationship to our biracial identities and we spend a surprising amount of time talking about James Bond. Matthew asks if The Sword of Kahless could survive in space and Jo argues that Kor has dramatic, chaotic bisexual energyAs always, be prepared that spoilers may be lurking around every corner just like Garak on Empok Nor.Subscribe for weekly recaps of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, follow us online at @TerokNoir on Twitter for silly memes and polls and contact us by e-mail at teroknoirpod@gmail.com
Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) give the “Little Green Men” a typical American greeting by having the US military break every rule of the Geneva Convention. The two of us come down on opposite sides as we talk about this campy, classic Star Trek episode as well as looking at camp across all of Star Trek, we chart Rom's meteoric rise from dumb brother to engineering genius and we are completely grossed out by the shared father and son oo-mox session that got a little bit too weird for us. Matthew asks if Quark is worse than Louis CK and Jo does the Time Warp. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) would not like to be on the Defiant during “Starship Down” as we discuss this classic Star Trek submarine episode in the vein of “Balance of Terror” and “Wrath of Khan.” We celebrate the amazing narrative setting of the chaos of a damaged submarine/spaceship, we appreciate the humor of Quark and James Cromwell and we have some very strong thoughts on how concussions are portrayed in film. Matthew rants about Worf being a good manager even when the show depicts him as otherwise and Jo asks “How can you not be romantic about baseball?” As always, be prepared that spoilers may be lurking around every corner just like Garak on Empok Nor.Subscribe for weekly recaps of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, follow us online at @TerokNoir on Twitter for silly memes and polls and contact us by e-mail at teroknoirpod@gmail.com
Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) discuss the episode that brought explicit queer representation to Star Trek in the 90's, “Rejoined”. Jo tries and fails to remain calm while discussing ALL of the wonderful, sapphic content in this episode, we celebrate the incredible chemistry between Terry Farrell and Susanna Thompson and we discuss queer representation in Berman era Star Trek through modern streaming era Star Trek. Matthew asks if Risan perfume smells disgusting and Jo is still not done talking about all the good sapphic shit in this episode. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) lack “Indiscretion” as we dig into the private lives of Dukat and his secret Bajoran child as well as Ben and Kassidy's relationship troubles. We praise Marc Alaimo's acting as Dukat, we analyze how this episode humanizes the “monster” character and how common this trope is in not just American media but also American history and we talk about the dynamic between Bajor and Cardassia in light of current events. Matthew asks if Kassidy moving onto the station is a “big step” and Jo has a sapphic meltdown over Kira in her away mission fit. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) take the “Hippocratic Oath” to do no harm as we talk about all the harm that Worf causes on DS9. We discuss the very rough, fascist cop look we get of Worf in this episode and how it is necessary to differentiate TNG Worf from DS9 Worf, we talk about Bashir and Miles' hangout with the Jem'Hadar and how Bashir values them as individuals and not just slaves of the Dominion and we question what direction this season is headed. Matthew asks if we should do a Discovery recap pod and Jo is totally normal over that one scene where Miles says he wishes he was married to a man.As always, be prepared that spoilers may be lurking around every corner just like Garak on Empok Nor.Subscribe for weekly recaps of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, follow us online at @TerokNoir on Twitter for silly memes and polls and contact us by e-mail at teroknoirpod@gmail.com
Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) welcome “The Visitor” to the pod as we talk about one of the most deeply moving, timeless episodes of Star Trek. We put this episode in conversation with the classic TNG episode “The Inner Light”, we praise the acting of Tony Todd and how he and Avery Brooks were able to deliver the same intimate, father/son relationship that Avery Brooks and Cirroc Lofton have developed over the course of the series and we explore what this episode is saying about Jake's grief and connect it to how the series premiere addresses Ben's grief. Matthew asks if Jake Sisko is responsible for the Dominion War and Jo rants about Starfleet uniform timeline continuity As always, be prepared that spoilers may be lurking around every corner just like Garak on Empok Nor.Subscribe for weekly recaps of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, follow us online at @TerokNoir on Twitter for silly memes and polls and contact us by e-mail at teroknoirpod@gmail.com

We talk Klingons, we talk root beer, we talk space battles, we talk about readying even numbered launchers and odd numbered launchers, we talk Sisko's new haircut, we talk about honor, we talk about the new theme song, we talk about Gowron's insane bug eyes, we talk about bullshit made up corporate sounding titles that they give Worf and even though he doesn't talk about him, we also talk about Alexander, Worf's son. All that and more in this packed episode. Also, Matthew attempts to predict which characters Jo will queer in this episode and Jo cannot stop talking about how much she loves the epic battle scene. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) try to find “The Adversary” on board The Defiant. We celebrate Sisko making Captain but without all that “Jolly good fellow” business, we debate crew assignments on The Defiant and we ask how many times has a captain in Star Trek initiated a self destruct sequence. Matthew downs a cold brew and takes a hard stance against officer's logs and Jo rants about fucking bullshit ass Eddington. Yup, it's a bit of a loose episode. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) explore the various “Facets” of this very meh episode. We celebrate Nog getting into Starfleet Academy, we question what the hell was going on with the Curzon storyline and we suggest some changes that could have made the episode better. Matthew wonders if Alexander Siddig would look good in drag. Jo has a theory about the nature of Dax and Leeta's relationship and if you think its a queer theory you're probably right.

We analyze the pro-military messaging in this episode particularly in the context of the resistance fighters and the military vs politicians aspect, we debate if Winn's actions in this episode are consistent with her established character and as Miles would want, we get in the zone. Autozone. Matthew has a spicy hot take about Indiana Jones and Jo attempts to find out how many different dinosaurs she can quickly list off the top of her head. We explore the new facts of Ferengi life that we are introduced to in this episode, as well as the introduction of Brunt, FCA. We analyze what Star Trek is trying to say about the Ferengi and how they are used in Star Trek and we critique Moogie's version of “lean in feminism.” Matthew asks if Sisko is the best cook in Starfleet and Jo rants about Dax's homosexual behavior regarding Kassidy Yates. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) become “Explorers” as we board Sisko's solar sail ship and set off for Cardassian space. Turns out, the real treasure is the friends we made along the way as we discuss the Bashir and Miles' evolving friendship and the shift from father/son to friends for Jake and Ben. Also, we consider how Bashir's insecurity and jealousy of his old medical school rival is a metatexual critique of the relationship DS9 has with TNG. Finally, we debate who among the “ship builders” aka Picard, Sisko and Tom Paris could be considered the best ship engineer. Matthew asks where Doctor Pulaski was on January 6th and Jo rants about Han shooting first. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) find an “Improbable Cause” to say “The Die is Cast” as we discuss this Garak heavy, two part episode that sets up a lot of future DS9 storytelling. We relish the character work that these two episodes do with Garak and explore his arc up until now and where it leads into the future, we examine the shift this episode marks towards military propaganda in the following seasons of the show and we take a few minutes to talk about how much we hate mother fucking Eddington. Matthew asks if this episode marks the end of Bashir and Garak's relationship and the beginning of Bashir and Miles' and Jo rants about vice admiral uniforms. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) look “Through the Looking Glass” as we return to the Mirror Universe. We take a Marxist reading on the mirror universe, contrast sexual liberation in the mirror universe and sexual repression in the prime universe and we talk about our favorite “Space Dad” having sex with his co-workers. Matthew asks if Mirror Jennifer is the biggest bootlicker to ever lick boots and Jo rants about dual wielding pistols. Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) are the “Distant Voices” this week saying that this episode of DS9 sucks. We wait as long as possible before we have to actually start talking about this episode, then when we do we discuss “old acting” across Star Trek and we look at what doesn't work in this episode and propose what could have worked better. Matthew asks if we pulled 10 random people off a NYC subway would they be able to do a better acting job in this episode and Jo talks at length about The Man From Snowy River.
Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) may not be hailed as a “Visionary” but we do have thoughts on how successful Miles would be if he was into horse betting. We also consider this episode in the context of other time travel and multiversal stories, we debate which Miles survives to the end of the episode and we encourage people to pause listening to our podcast to go watch The Man From Snowy River. Matthew has some strong thoughts about Bashir's doctoring in this episode and Jo asks if the Romulan's were right. Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Empok Nor Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 5 episode 24 of Rebinge Deep Space Nine: Empok Nor. In this episode we visit an abandoned version of our station and end up in the middle of a horror movie. The good news is, Garak is in this episode to bring some of his usual wit and craziness. The bad news is a lot of red (yellow) shirts bite the dust! Empok Nor We raid Empok Nor for equipment compatible with DS9, but even though we know the place is going to be full of traps we are not at all careful and bad things happen. Red shirts die. Garak goes a little nutty. Miles makes some very bad decisions. Bad bad bad. But a fun episode to watch! What's this rebinge thing? It's a re-watch of a thing you've already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Please listen to some of our favorite episodes like Duet, The Visitor or Rejoined or our VERY SPECIAL episode: Star Trek First Contact.
