Join Alex and Dr. Jeff Punske as they explore the linguistic and cognitive aspects of Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi masterpiece, Arrival (2016). The film stars Amy Adams as Dr. Louise Banks, a renowned linguist, and Jeremy Renner as a renowned theoretical physicist. Together, they must decipher an extremely complex language from newly-arrived extraterrestrials, referred to as the heptapods. But as Louise begins to learn their language, she begins to experience time differently! Alex and Jeff explore the nature of cognition and language and discuss how the film uses the Sapir-Whorf hypotheses to explain how Louise ultimately experiences her life during this time and afterward... or was it beforeward? Check out Jeff's edited book, Xenolinguistics: Towards a Science of Extraterrestrial Language! Matt and Eric tackle the only Jason Bourne-less Bourne flick, THE BOURNE LEGACY, which is a confounding SAW IV style overlapping of previous events starring Jeremy Renner as a super-soldier who doesn't want to go back to being the town idiot.

Send us Fan MailEpisode 116 – The 3rd Person Narration/Paul Schneider/Nick Cave Standoff: The Assassination of Jesse Jame by the Coward Robert Ford v. Train Dreams. All aboard episode 116 of the Triple F—chugging along the tracks laid by legendary filmmaker Terrence Malick, we're discussing two noteworthy films that closely follow his style in recounting tales of the American experience star ting with 2007's The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, directed by Andrew Dominik and starring Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck, Sam Shepard, Sam Rockwell, Jeremy Renner, Paul Schneider, Garret Dillahunt, Mary-Louise Parker, Alison Elliott, Zooey Deschanel, Ted Levine, Michael Parks, James Carville, with Hugh Ross as narrator—up against Clint Bentley's Train Dreams, recently watched and retroactively crowned king of the 2025 film mountain, starring Joel Edgerton, Felicity Jones, William H. Macy, John Diehl, Kerry Condon, Paul Schneider again, Clifton Collins Jr., and Will Patton as narrator, a film that echoes Dominik's approach through its third-person narration, recurring Paul Schneider presence, and a Nick Cave–inflected musical sensibility. Covering me with their scatterguns this week are my usual duo of bushwackers, my kid sis and snooty bookworm Roseanne Caputi and slit-eyed outlaw with enough oat and barley in his voice to give Will Patton and Hugh Ross a run for their money, the one and only Gordon Alex Robertson. Before we start shoveling coal into the engines, the synopses: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert FordOutlaw Jesse James, increasingly paranoid and unpredictable, surrounds himself with a dwindling gang that no longer knows whether he's losing his grip, giving up, or testing their loyalty. Among them is Robert Ford, a devoted admirer whose presence only adds to the tension as trust breaks down within the group. In Train Dreams Robert Grainger, a railroad laborer in the early 20th-century American West, struggles to build a life as isolation and personal loss reshape his world. Are these films of comparable quality or does one tower over the other?Find out!Watch the video version on youtube:

Sinema kulübümüzün 28inci buluşmasında yönetmenliğini Denis Villeneuve'nin yaptığı, başrollerinde Amy Adams ve Jeremy Renner'ın oynadığı 2016 yılı yapımı Arrival, Türkçe adıyla Geliş filmini konuştuk.Film, dünya genelinde 12 farklı noktaya inen gizemli uzay gemilerinin ardından askeri birimler tarafından göreve çağrılan dilbilimci Louise Banks'in hikâyesini anlatıyor. In this episode, we speak with Kym Renner—career public servant and sister of actor Jeremy Renner—about her journey from a small-town childhood in Modesto to a life devoted to child welfare and social impact. Kym shares stories of growing up with Jeremy, witnessing his rise to global fame, and living through the trauma of his near-fatal snowplow accident—an experience that reshaped their family and strengthened their commitment to foster youth. She shares how they co-founded the RennerVation Foundation in Nevada and built the “Pave Your Way” program to support young people aging out of foster care with housing, life skills, and a real path to adulthood. And she reflects candidly on the pressures of visibility, the limits of celebrity philanthropy, and why lasting change depends on sustained, community-driven support long after the headlines fade.
Boston Bad Guys Month kicks off with Ben Affleck's sophomore directing effort, the gritty crime thriller, The Town. We'll dive into this blue-collar bank-robbing drama set in Charlestown, a neighborhood the movie insists produces more professional criminals per square mile than anywhere else on Earth, and ask an important question:are the criminals masterminds, or just very (over) confident guys making (really) stupid decisions? Along the way we discuss the scene-stealing chaos agent (Jeremy Renner), the perpetually frustrated FBI presence (Jon Hamm), and a group of law enforcement agents and career criminals that might be sharing the same brain cell. Denis Villeneuve's Arrival Since the beginning of this new century Popular Cinema has become increasingly obvious and simplistic. It is rare that a major studio will take a chance with "challenging, thought-provoking" material. In 2016 Denis Villeneuve would adapt Tony Chiang's 1998 novella "Story of Your Life" with a beautifully executed non-linear narrative. A sci-fi drama incorporating alien contact, geopolitics, diplomacy, and the perception of time, Villeneuve's film is a powerful and optimistic take on a genre that is often driven by pessimism and hopelessness. What could have easily been an overly formulaic bore is instead an intellectually demanding and cinematically rewarding experience that was recognized as one of the best pictures of 2016. Featuring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and - the always reliable - Forrest Whitaker, Arrival is a gift to the starved cineaste. As always, you can reach us at gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many, Many Thanks. On the Kenny & JT Show we welcome in an old friend of Kenny's. Stevie Yurjevich is an extra on Paramount's “The Mayor of Kingstown” starring Jeremy Renner.
Send a textWith Episode 8, our hosts put their Gray Days behind them, wrapping the short Season 16 with THE IMMIGRANT (2013), or as it was a.k.a.'ed during its short development and prior to its delayed release “Low Life” and “The Nightingale.” James Gray teams back up with cowriter Richard Menello to write a period drama role explicitly for Marion Cotillard whom Gray met through her then-partner director Guillaume Canet during their work together on the oft-mentioned Blood Ties also released in 2013. The story follows the hard luck of Cotillard's titular immigrant as her likewise Polish emigre sister is confined to a medical ward on Ellis Island during immigration while Cotillard's Ewa Cybulska is offered an opportunity to remain in the States through the kindness of Joaquin Phoenix playing a pimp and former child immigrant named Bruno Weiss in the actor's fourth and to-date final Gray film role. Cotillard's immigrant forms a brief love triangle with Jeremy Renner's magician and brother-to-Bruno character Orlando The Magician until he ***SPOILER*** runs off to Iraq to defuse bombs as one of the Avengers who just shoots arrows or something. J/k. It's a Gray film. You know someone is going to die. Maybe it's the magician. Maybe it's the sister. Maybe both. Stay awake to find out, or give this episode a listen. This episode, Harvey Weinstein returns; Ken tries renaming the podcast; Ryan and Thomas are spot on in their estimation of the film; and our boys rank the eight-film oeuvre on The Gray Scale. Next week, we're on smoko but will return with Hacks (mild pun intended; Surgeon General's warning: do not consume the first episode of Season 17 if you're preggers). Meanwhile, Netflix's Stranger Things series finale generated between 25 to 28 million dollars from a limited two-day theatrical run across 600 theaters on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, with exhibitors selling concession vouchers rather than traditional tickets and keeping all revenue themselves as an olive branch between the streamer and theaters. Benoit Blanc is back — but not in the way you might expect. In this episode, we dig into Wake Up Dead Man, the third entry in Rian Johnson's Knives Out series, and quickly realise this isn't just another playful, sun-drenched whodunnit. The tone is darker, stranger, and far more morbid than Knives Out or Glass Onion, leaning hard into religious imagery, guilt, confession, and moral rot.Set around a remote church and a fire-and-brimstone priest, the film opens with what looks like an impossible murder: a man stabbed in a sealed room, in full view of his congregation. From there, Blanc circles a tight group of suspects — each with motive, history, and secrets — as the film toys with classic murder-mystery rules… and then quietly breaks a few of them. What we talk about in the episode:The tonal shift — why this feels closer to gothic noir than cosy Agatha ChristieReligion, confession, and judgment as thematic engines, not just window dressingWhether the mystery is too Scooby-Doo or intentionally rejecting “fair-play” sleuthingA stacked cast and who actually makes an impact (and who doesn't)Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc: more observer than solver this time — for better or worseThe film's final act, revelations, and why it left us oddly unsatisfied despite clever ideasHow it stacks up against Knives Out (still the gold standard) and Glass Onion (the loudest sibling)We also get into a broader debate about modern murder mysteries, Netflix's influence on structure and pacing, and whether this series is drifting away from the thing that made it work in the first place: watching a brilliant detective actually do the detecting. If you like your whodunnits bleak, talky, and a little unholy — or if you just want to hear us wrestle with a film that's clever, flawed, and deliberately frustrating — this one's for you.
You ever go on a field trip at school and every time you look over your shoulder, there's a teacher or chaperone giving you the stink eye? Well try to imagine a field trip where you look up and all your old relatives are waving you into a tunnel of white light. On today's very special milestone 100th Episode: you'll hear about my school trip to a French strip club; you would learn about a man of God who unintentionally brought a flock of young faithful to meet him; and you will see why I believe riding through a tornado would be somehow less frightening and uncomfortable than the rigors of today's story. And if you had been listening on Patreon… you would learn how a single school trip shaped my entire world view while listening to Chaka Khan; you would hear about some of the worst ways people have finished school trips unexpectedly early; you would learn about the fake US president who died from the largest landslide ever recorded in human history; and you would learn how today's tragedy could have prevented by simple diarrhea. I mentioned the Oregon Trail earlier in this episode, specifically the Oregon Trail video game from the 80s. It was made as a learning tool about decision making and resource management, but it also teaches that you can do everything right and still die. It's an important thing to remember, and beyond that, this episode taught me how one very young brush with death became the moment this show was born – I just didn't know it yet. It's a long story, and I preserved it for Patreon. For them, I also finished the episode with Chaka Khan's “I Feel For You”, to let you judge just how much or how little it feels like the jam you would have wanted to die to.I mention two things at the end of the episode. First I wanted to call out Kala and her husband Ben for kind of exercisming things at Funeral Kazoo and looking to do some cool stuff for future of the show. Ben, being a native of the American Northwest, yelled in my face that he wanted an episode from this land we've never visited. I said, Ben, I'll get you your dead children, watch me go – and here we are. I'm never happy when a story involves the death of children, but almost half of the would-be victims bailed with cramps and gas and all sorts of things and unknowingly saved themselves from making today's story worse. The second thing was that I would post a very short video on Patreon for paid and unpaid members to hopefully see grief in a different way. I'm going to encourage you to stop thinking of your life as a straight-line journey from cradle to grave and more like a tree, spinning around the sun every year, growing and maturing and changing from the inside-out. I want you to think about grief like a roadblock you keep having to hurdle, that gets just a little bit easier with every try. Head over the Patreon.com/funeralkazoo, sign up as a free member and give it a try. If it helps, I'm overjoyed. Celebrity guest stars include listener of the show and snowcat un-enthusiast, Jeremy Renner; 33rd president of the United States, Harry Truman; local area moron and head wound collector, Homer Simpson; and 80s dance floor filler, Chaka Khan.–––––THANK YOU. Most shows survive at the whim of production companies and corporate sponsors, built from the top down. Doomsday doesn't exist because some network exec believes in it – it exists because actual people do. It's built from the bottom up, and it's been my privilege to bring you these stories. Just you, me, and a microphone. I don't do this for you, so much as I do this because of you. Is Sheriff Mila Kunis right to slap the cuffs on Josh O'Connor after the doubting priest confesses to a violent past?
