There's probably no more common search among all humanity than for the meaning of life. So, as believers, we have the answer dialed in, right? Let's see what the book of Ecclesiastes has to say on the subject. Ecclesiastes 1 Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Where can wisdom be found? That's a question that still echoes today. We live in an age where the world's knowledge is at our fingertips. Has it made us more righteous, more just, or more at peace? Job sees this dilemma clearly. Humanity has mined the depths of the earth, uncovered hidden treasures, and mastered incredible feats—but wisdom cannot be bought, bargained for, or unearthed like gold and silver. So where does wisdom come from? Job's answer is profound: “The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.” The Rev. John Shank, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Edwardsville, IL, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Job 28. Why do the righteous suffer? That's the burning question at the heart of the book of Job—one of the most profound and challenging books in all of Scripture. From a Lutheran perspective, Job's story isn't just about a man enduring unimaginable hardship; it's about wrestling with God's will, grappling with well-meaning but misguided advice, and ultimately finding comfort in God's grace rather than human understanding. As Job's friends offer simplistic answers, Job demands the truth, and God's response reminds us of His infinite wisdom and mercy. Through it all, we see glimpses of Christ—the truly innocent sufferer—who redeems our pain and points us to the cross, where suffering meets salvation. Join us as we journey through Job, confronting tough questions about faith, suffering, and God's mysterious ways with hope grounded in Christ alone. Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. This is known as the urban heat island effect, and it can lead to greater energy use, higher […]

Are you looking where it's easy or where you're more likely to succeed? We content ourselves with people who can say no and can't say yes. We seek affection and not respect. Remember "looking for love in all the wrong places"? You won't find love in a bar. A woman told me all the really appealing men in bars are married or gay! If you want to catch fish, go where no one else is fishing, not where all the fishermen (and bears) are. When you try to get into the fastest lane on a crowded highway, you usually wind up in worse shape. You won't find high-level buyers trolling the web. Cold calling is absurd. Email is surrounded by scammers, spammers, and noise. Most claims on the internet about building a business are bogus. Most certificates and initials after your name are worthless. This podcast is the right place because no one else is telling you this. Search for your keys where you dropped them. Use your iPhone to shine a light in your life.
We explored the fascinating story of the Magi – not the three kings of Christmas card fame, but Persian astrologers who practiced a form of wisdom that God's people were actually told to avoid. Yet mysteriously, God invited these pagan scholars to witness something extraordinary. These educated stargazers could get themselves to Jerusalem through their learning, but they needed Scripture's wisdom to find Jesus in tiny Bethlehem. Their journey shows us three key insights about wisdom: true wisdom comes from God, human understanding has real limits, and worldly wisdom often misses what matters most. While their education and star charts could point them toward a king, only God's revelation could bring them to their knees before a baby in a humble home. The Magi remind us that no matter how educated or accomplished we become, our hearts are restless until they find their rest in worship of Jesus. Their story challenges our cultural assumptions about success, status, and what truly matters in God's kingdom.

In 1976, NASA's two Viking spacecraft touched down on Mars, becoming the first successful landers on the red planet. On board Viking 1, the craft carried several biological experiments to search for life. While most scientists consider the results of those experiments to be negative for Martian life, one experiment gave a positive result. The resulting controversy has spanned decades, with numerous scientists weighing in. Now, Dirk Schulze-Makuch from the Centre of Astronomy and Astrophysics (ZAA) at Technische Universität Berlin questions how those experiments were performed in light of what we know of extremely dry environments here on Earth. These Mars analogs, such as the Atacama desert in Chile, show that while microbes can survive in harsh conditions, too much water becomes a problem. And those Viking experiments may have involved too much water. Join Dr. Franck Marchis as he discusses Dr. Schulze-Makuch's recent Nature Astronomy article and how we should follow the salts instead of the water. (Recorded 28 October 2024.)

This excerpt from "Enemies of the Mind" examines the link between mental illness and spiritual well-being, suggesting many issues arise from sin and a lack of faith in God. The author critiques modern medicine for focusing on social acceptance instead of addressing spiritual causes. He argues that the Bible offers the best treatment, promoting spiritual healing through faith in Jesus Christ over secular solutions. I am so freaking excited about this week's episode because it is one where I share things that have CHANGED my life. I think that a lot of times we believe we will find calm in so many things outside of ourselves, but what if I told you that you are looking for calm in all the wrong place? It's not within the clean house... at least not until you've created it within! Then a clean home will relax you even more and you'll stop looking for things to do even when the house is clean. You've gotta get to the root of why you aren't calm and THEN you'll be the woman who finds peace and calm in a clean space. Here are some tips + tricks to help you find your calm:
Sermon Resources: Scriptures - John 4, John 2:24-26, John 19:28 1. “Our stories are all stories of longing. We long for a good self to be and for good work to do. We long to become human in a world that tempts us always to be less than human or looks to us to be more. We long to love and to be loved. And in a world where it is often hard to believe in much of anything, we long to believe in something holy and beautiful and life-transcending that will give meaning and purpose to the lives we live…The word longing comes from the same root as the word long in the sense of length in either time or space and also the word belong, so that in its full richness to long suggests to yearn for a long time for something that is a long way off and something that we feel we belong to and that belongs to us.” -Frederick Buechner, "The Longing For Home" 2. “The main emotion of the adult American who has had all the advantages of wealth, education, and culture is disappointment.” -John Cheever 3. “Religion has accepted the monstrous heresy that noise, size, activity and bluster make a man dear to God.” -A.W. Tozer, "The Pursuit of God" 4. “Creatures are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exists. A baby feels hunger: well, there is such a thing as food. A duckling wants to swim: well, there is such a thing as water. Men feel sexual desire: well, there is such a thing as sex. If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it, that does not prove that the universe is a fraud. Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing. If that is so, I must take care, on the one hand, never to despise, or to be unthankful for, these earthly blessings, and on the other, never to mistake them for the something else of which they are only a kind of copy, or echo, or mirage. I must keep alive in myself the desire for my true country.” -C.S. Lewis, "Mere Christianity" 5. “You have made us for Yourself; and our hearts are restless until they find rest in You.” -Augustine of Hippo

In 1980, country music singer, Johnny Lee, had a # 1 hit song for weeks. Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places was about a fruitless search for true love, finally satisfied, as expressed in his lyrics "...You came knockin' on my heart's door, you're everything I've been looking for..." Lee's lyrics don't come close to the poignant question of Heavenly messengers in a Jerusalem cemetery 2,000 years ago!

Catherine wasn't born into the cult of Jehovah's Witnesses. There was a lot of abuse and bullying that went on in her home, both parental and from her siblings. Her family was lacking love, and one day she thought that she found it when she met a young man. That young man ended up bringing her to Jehovah's Witnesses, and she took to what she thought was “The Truth”. Eventually she would realize that both her husband and the Witnesses around her, including a sister that became her best friend, were narcissistic. Throughout her journey with them, she would look for love from emotionally unavailable people, mirroring her upbringing, only to eventually find a relationship through her ministry work that led her to realize that she was the one that needed help.
