Why does Strange New Worlds seem to have a problem understand the, ahem, Kor of pre-established characters? Why are they failing to make compelling television week-after-week? Maybe it's because they aren't interested in making Star Trek at all. We're nudging through the noir nonsense, complaining about conveniences, and griping about the gimmicks!

Anika and Liz hang out with a cactus. Is it a tribute to the Doctor Who serial "Meglos"? No, we're talking about episode 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' fourth season, "Human Best Friend"! Strange New Worlds has become a show dedicated to pastiches of better media How many episodes inspired by Star Trek Las Vegas are too many episodes inspired by Star Trek Las Vegas They did it -- they finally found a planet even worse than Risa Are the gimmicks getting in the way of storytelling? On the other hand, it feels like the story is setting La'an up to be the big bad before she is written out of the series Kirk, you have a baby. Why are you at a resort? Alone?  "If you look hard enough, you'll always find something to be angry about." Which is a longer way of saying, "Don't overthink it." Liz is still formulating her thoughts on the depiction of alcohol in SNW Congratulations to SNW for discovering queerbaiting

According to spokesperson Kelly Nelson, while the Dawson Lodge is reportedly in “really good shape,” it no longer meets current building standards. “The rooms are too small, we have inside rooms without any windows to the outside,” said Nelson, adding seniors don't want to move in until they have a room with a window. The new facility, expected to open in 2028, will have 62 affordable-housing units. Vulcan Mayor Tom Grant said Thursday the new facility will be a “win-win” for the community. The Enterprise goes back in time and doesn't prevent a genocide, but Anika and Liz would like to go back in time to prevent this episode from ever being made. Oh, did the fourth season premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds displease us? It sure did!  "Don't overthink it!" This episode provides more evidence for our argument that Pike is bad at his job Words we use to describe this episode: "nonsense", "dreadful", "terrible", "morally broken", "anti Star Trek", "almost clever" Why does SNW want us to hate La'an?  Leaning into the biological determinism with this Kha'an arc The Martians and Spock are totally incurious about each other, because this is The Least Curious Star Trek "Let's not worry too much about that genocide we facilitated" is … not a great twist in 2026. Or ever.

Anika and Liz take off for a cheeky little diplomatic meeting with some Klingons. What could go wrong?  We are discussing Star Trek: Discovery's "Lethe", an episode which inspired our friendship, a whole lot of fic and a conversation about whether it is a flawless piece of Star Trek, or if it has merely a single flaw.  We are not here to be cool or reasonable about Admiral Kat Normal Human Guy Ash Tyler and Normal Federation Captain Lorca At any time, it is reasonable to assume that Sarek is disappointed in at least one of his children Ash Tyler could never appear in SNW because his whole existence is a rebuke to that series' biological determinism Anika's Wonderland Corner: the Vulcans at Michael's graduation are dressed as chess pieces (Michael, like L'Rell, is a white pawn) We have. This week we take a discerning look at "Project Hail Mary," a pleasant & uplifting story of a human and an alien working together to save their worlds. - Which Geek pointed out believability & humor as two of the main strengths of the movie? - Which Geek sited a charismatic & likable main character as a major positive of the movie? - Which Geek really enjoyed the German scientist character that is spearheading the program for saving Earth's sun? - Which Geek also really enjoyed the security officer Carl character? - What are some of the great things about Rocky, the five-limbed rock-like alien character, that befriends Ryan Gosling's character? How well is their friendship & alliance portrayed? - Did the Geeks love one or both ships in the move? What aspects of Rocky's ship make it unique & intriguing? - While a great movie (and both Geeks feel that way, in general), no movie is perfect. What were some of the nitpicks the Geeks had? - Which Geek felt like the movie could have explored a little bit more about Rocky's planet, people, and culture? - Which Geek had mixed feelings about the flashback structure and felt some parts of the movie were too slow or too fast? - Which Geek didn't read the novel the movie is based on but could "feel" sections of the movie that either glossed over or completely omitted things that were probably more thoroughly explained in the book? - Which Geek felt like "The Martian" took one song that would have been more fitting as a music choice in "Project Hail Mary"? - Which Geek had mixed feelings about the structure & functionality of the earth ship called "Hail Mary"? - Despite the minor nitpicks, how high were the Geeks' final ratings for the movie? - Which good and/or bad things did the Geeks cover in the spoiler zone at the end? - When talking about Ryan Gosling's character, Ryland Grace, as a great teacher (during a tangent in the spoiler zone section), which high school teachers did the Geeks site as being great? Which senior year English teacher did Preston point out? Which junior-year English teacher wrote Todd a recommendation letter for college that he & his parents read (even though they weren't supposed to) and threw it out because she gave Todd a mixed review? Which chemistry teacher inspired Todd to go to college on scholarship to become a teacher, even though he sucked at it and only taught for one year? Which teacher did Preston have for history at least once, that Todd had for just Geography & International Relations, and that Dave & Dave idolized? Which history teacher did Todd have for U.S. History & World History that he really respected even though he wasn't great at history? Which teacher did Todd have for German 1 & 2 that Preston apparently also had for either German or math? Which year did Todd have a long-term substitute English teacher for a month or two who was even better than the actual teacher who came in after recovering from an injury. Who was Todd's 2nd-favorite teacher that he had for Pre-Calculus and Computer Science that he mentioned a few minutes after talking about other teachers? - Which "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode tried to do a "buddy" story similar to "Project Hail Mary" and "Enemy Mine"? Did Todd feel SNW did it better or worse than those two movies?Listen now for the answers to these and other astronomical questions, as the Geeks explore..."Project Hail Mary"?Please rate or review us wherever you listen to podcasts. You can leave comments on individual episodes via the Spotify & GoodPods apps. Our e-mail address is discerninggeeks@gmail.com.Royalty-free music in this episode comes from Pixabay.com....And, speaking of humans & aliens working together, check out Todd's other podcast, Alienating Ourselves, where he and another friend are reviewing the theatrical movie, one season, and five TV movies of "Alien Nation," a story about a human detective assigned to work with an alien partner.

Our identity is how we see and understand ourself(TGBY) Gen 1:26-28 My True Self The real question of human nature goes beyond basic biology…[to]…questions of, say, morality and purpose. Does human nature carry with it a moral structure…? Or are we simply…free to be or to do whatever we choose? Pieces of living dough attached to a will?(SNW) Being made in God's image means we are made to be like God, not to be God. We find our identity in being like Him, we lose it in trying to be Him. The core of the lie Adam & Eve believed was that they could be like God without God(TGBY) My False Self [ Only humans challenge identity] . A tulip knows exactly what it is. It is never tempted by false ways of being. Nor does it face complicated decisions in the process of becoming… All give glory to God by being exactly what they are. For in being what God means them to be…Humans, however, encounter a more challenging existence. We think. We consider… But in only one [way] will you find your true self that has been hidden in Christ for all eternity. Only in one will you find …deepest fulfillment.(TGBY) We all live searching for that one possible way of being that carries with it the gift of authenticity.(TGBY) The [world]…sees authenticity as defined by the ability to give social expression to [feelings]. The modern self also assumes that society [will] affirm this behavior. [This is] expressive individualism(SNW) Expressive individualism holds that each person has a unique core of feeling…if individuality is to be realized(Robert Bellah quote:(SNW) 1)It is incoherent. When I look inside of myself I find competing loves and desires. 2)It is unstable. I am always changing. 3)It's illusory. You don't express all your feelings, you express the ones you choose. 4)It's crushing. It must be achieved and created and sustained by yourself. 5)It's excluding. It is based on being better than others. [We falsely believe] our happiness will come from living life our way, not God's way(TGBY) The false self is what happens when I try to build a life & identity without God. The core of the false self is the belief that my value depends on what I have, what I can do, and what others think about me…because it is hollow at the core, the life of a false self is a life of excessive attachments…attachments undermine our freedom, making our contentment and joy dependent on their presence.(TGBY) Our false self is built on an inordinate attachment to an image of our self that we think makes us special(TGBY) [It's] amazing that we turn to others who…[are]… as limited and darkened…to discover our worth! Rather than relying on God [for] who we are, we depend on others who base our worth on…their standards. Because our performance…dominate our search for significance, we [can't tell the difference] between our real identity and the way we behave… Our true value is based not on our behavior or the approval of others but on what God's Word says is true.(SFS) There is no true life apart from relationship to God…&…no true self apart from this relationship. The foundation of our identity resides in our life giving relationship with the Source of life. Any identity that exists apart from this relationship is an illusion(TGBY) My New Self We do not find our true self by seeking it. Rather, we find it by seeking God(TGBY) 2 Cor 5:17 My true identity is received not achieved. Matt 16:13-18 When I confess His true identity, He confirms my true identity.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiered as a spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, many fans were over the moon with the return to episodic televisions with tie-ins to The Original Series.
