I'd like to introduce you to TMI Project, a nonprofit near and dear to my heart, that uses writing and true storytelling for social justice movement building, to ignite human connection and as a healing modality for personal transformation. I have gone through the workshop as a participant and became a trained facilitator of their methodology. I recently sat down with Eva Tenuto, the co-founder and executive director of TMI Project, to talk about how storytelling can enhance connection and resilience during times of social isolation. Resources: Eva Tenuto is the co-founder and executive director of TMI Project, a non-profit organization offering transformative storytelling workshops and performances in which storytellers divulge the parts of their stories that they usually leave out. Since 2010, Eva has brought TMI Project from her living room to a host of performance spaces, high schools, colleges, detention centers, mental health facilities, theaters and the United Nations. Eva is the editor and director of multiple solo shows, one of which was awarded Best Comedic Script of 2014 in the United Solo Festival. Her directorial film debut, Vicarious Resilience, a docu-short, celebrated its world premiere at The Woodstock Film Festival in 2018. Her essays have appeared in assorted anthologies and at Longreads.com. Today is March 14, 2020 and we’re scheduled to launch the TMI Project Podcast on April 1 – two weeks away. Just in time for the COVID 19 pandemic. The world has changed overnight. Right now, at the moment I’m recording this, there are more than 150 thousand cases worldwide. But that number will be higher by the time you hear this. Markets are crashing.People are losing their jobs, kids can’t go to school. The psychic and economic toll –well, we don’t know yet how bad it can get because all of this is beyond what we’ve allowed ourselves to imagine, except in the movies. And at the moment when we really need to find each other. To come together and talk and share stories –we must isolate ourselves to keep those who are most vulnerable safe. That’s the most striking irony to me. When we most need each other, we have to shut ourselves away.So this is my message in a bottle. During this time, TMI Project will remain dedicated to helping you tell your stories and we’ll help you stay connected even if we can’t be in the same room with each other right now. I don’t know what things will look like on April 1 when we officially launch. Like so many other organizations, we had to cancel our launch party.Instead, we’re going to try an experiment and invite people to come together online. We’re going to do what we do best – offer a mini TMI Project workshop with spontaneous writing and then daring ourselves to read it in community. Warts and all. It’s scary, it’s exhilarating, it’s cathartic. And for the first time, we’re going to do it virtually. So if you’re sick, or you’re a caretaker, or just bored from the drudgery of social distancing, check out the website for details and join us.If you haven’t yet, subscribe to our podcast wherever you get your podcasts so you’ll get a notification on April 1 when our first series, Tragedy Plus Time Equals Comedy launches with an episode about the amazing Verna Gillis. Over the course of the series every storyteller manages to find some levity as they reflect on the most surreal and harrowing experiences of their lives. I think there is something to learn from each of them right now. In the meantime, stay safe, wash your hands, try not to panic, leave some toilet paper on the shelves for your neighbors and if you’ve got something on your mind, something that’s weighing you down – write about it. You’ll feel better. You can stay up to date on our new online offerings by following us on social media or visiting our website at TMIProject.org
Today, Theresa was joined by special surprise guest Eva Tenuto from the TMI Project, talking about all the amazing initiatives they have going on, Black Stories Matter, LGBTQTMI, Locker Room Talk and Vicarious Resilience, in an effort to drive awareness of their 24 hour fundraising campaign for Hudson Valley Gives. Not from the Hudson Valley, they can come to you, or you can check out their work online and even host a Black Stories matter viewing party in your community. And don't forget to give and support their transformational work. (Note time approx 15 mins in.) Next up Theresa is joined by three women working in the body, mind, and wellness field: Shawn Harrison, host of Mindful a weekly radio show at Radio Kingston, a yoga educator, and creator and steward of Mudita Yoga Lab in Uptown Kingston. Cory Nakasue, Astrologer, Writer, Therapist and teacher who incorporates yoga, pilates, kinesiology and dermoneuromodulation into her offerings at Body Intelligence. Cory is also the co-founder of Gemini Hill, an artist collective, farm cooperative and event space. Nidhi Adhiya-Huba, Yoga Therapist, Sound and Space Healer, Artist, Mama and Entrepreneur who incorporates aromatherapy, crystal healing and ayurvedic wisdom into her offerings. Nidhi is also the founder of Aum Home and Bliss Babes Retreats. Our conversations winds through the why and how of what they do, listening to the wisdom of the body, the return of the feminine, the benefits of yoga and meditation, getting out of boxes and structure and into chaos and freedom, women's circles, rituals and what their own personal daily self care practices look like. These women authentically embody their teachings and offer them from a place of compassion and sincerity. It was an honor to be in conversation with them! I had the deep joy of chatting with my friends Eva Tenuto and Hayley Downs to discuss the transformative power of sharing your story. I’m honored to share this episode with you. You may recall Eva, co-founder of the TMI Project, was a guest on our Where Storytelling Meets Activism episode on season one. I connect deeply with TMI Project's mission of “changing the world…one story at a time,” so much so, that I moonlight as a TMI Project workshop facilitator. Since 2012, twice a year, TMI Project has offered 10-week memoir writing and true storytelling workshops specially tailored to meet the needs of the Mental Health Association in Ulster County, Inc.. A documentary about this partnership, entitled Vicarious Resilience, will be released on May 29, 2018 at The Rosendale Theatre in NY. This short documentary highlights the experience of three participants, Morris Bassik, Barbara Stemke and, our guest, Hayley Downs as they went through the workshop, from the first session to the final storytelling performance before an audience of over 100, and a final follow-up session where they voiced the ways in which they experienced positive transformation. Eva, Hayley and I discuss what makes a good TMI story, and why divulging the parts of our stories that we usually leave out — the parts we are usually too ashamed or embarrassed to share — and the parts others most want to hear, helps participants turn their pasts into testimonials of survival, dispelling old shame and inspiring others. As Eva says, “we can’t heal what we don’t talk about.” Our culture’s perception around mental illness is shifting. The #VicariousResilience initiative is hoping to facilitate a deeper shift in compassion and understanding, to eradicate stigma and raise awareness about the ways so many suffer, and suffer in silence, for too long. Discover how the ancient art of storytelling can help eradicate stigma, improve mental health and create a truly inclusive community. This is Vicarious Resilience. The parts of the story that we leave out, the parts of ourselves that we’re too ashamed to share - what happens when you shape these into art? Our guest Eva Tenuto, co-founder of the Hudson Valley-based TMI project describes her life’s work: helping people uncover, shape, and share their stories. Through workshops that lead up to public performances, deep personal experiences are crafted to create community, healing, and help performers and audience members see that they aren’t alone. In our conversation with Eva, we talk about the writing and editing process and how it’s deepened by sharing it with a group. The TMI process invites people to explore and tell versions of vulnerable stories and to get the support from facilitators to make it a powerful, captivating story that will speak to the audience’s collective heart. We explore how TMI creates a special container that’s unique and and that telling such revealing stories isn’t for everyone in all venues. “Relationships shape stories and stories shape relationships” is part of the POBScast’s guiding vision. That becomes crystal clear as Eva helps us see how participants relationships are often transformed when these shared stories are told. And, Eva describes how writing and sharing her own monologues changed her own relationships, specifically with her own mother. The roots of the TMI program clearly come from Eva’s own life and she talks about how traumatic experiences as an adolescent, her struggle with addiction, her recovery process, and her passion for theater all combine to create this tremendous organization. Activism is key to the TMI platform and that means shining a spotlight on the stories that rarely get told and heard. The Black Stories Matter program will culminate in at least one performance on March 25th 2017 in Kingston, NY. Eva talks about how our inherently segregated communities often keeps us from hearing each other and how carefully considered projects like this one aim to help us listen to understand (not just respond). Truth telling can be contagious. When someone has the courage to tell a story long kept secret, others feel they have permission to share their own stories.
