We're burnt out, to say the least, but wanted to take the time to share some updates surrounding Kirby's current health updates, the importance of using our voices in the healthcare system and the need for open communication throughout the journey. We share our plans for a special (and much needed) getaway, other upcoming summer adventures, and overall, the challenges of navigating life's emotional rollercoaster while staying positive and riding the wave.
In this episode we discuss Kirby's journey towards top surgery, including the emotional preparation leading up to the consultation, the connection with the surgeon, and the impact of the surgery. We discuss the feelings of nervousness, research, and the importance of documenting the process. Listen in as we explore the emotional and physical journey surrounding top surgery, discussing the importance of body confidence, the role of support from friends and family, underlying fears, and the more intimate dynamics of our relationship.
In this episode Em shares her updates about her new career opportunity and how she got to where she is today. We also share news about our upcoming family spring break vacation and the steps we took in order to create a safe and comfortable environment for ourselves and our kids during travel. Lastly, we talk about our new ventures into daily exercise and the goals we have set for ourselves, specifically Kirby's goals before their top surgery.
In this episode Kirby gets more vulnerable and opens up about their journey into top surgery, mental health and how social perceptions of body choices have affected them directly. We discuss the importance of boundaries when navigating big life decisions and how crucial it is to have a support system to lean on while consistently quieting the noise around us.

I've written quite a lot about BMI-based procedure denials for higher-weight patients. These denials typically amount to a patient having their healthcare held hostage for a weight loss ransom that they are very unlikely to be able to pay.I have a collection of resources to fight gender-affirming surgery denials and now I have another study to add to that collection. Read the text for this piece on the MQR website. Note about the poem from Noah Arhm Choi for MQR's Fall 2023 issue "Transversions": While gender affirming care has singularly been one of the best things that has happened in my life, it has also meant that going to the Korean spa has no longer become an option with their binary locker rooms and my fears around discomfort and safety. This poem speaks to the ways that I yearn for queerness and Koreanness to be able to exist in the same space, and how even the best things aren't necessarily black or white, all good or all evil. I think this poem, too, is a way to speak to the ways that binary notions of categorization often fail to encompass the fullness of our humanity and our experiences.
"Joy is not just an emotion; it's a deep alignment with the self. And those of us who are in the LGBTQ+ community know better than most communities about what it really feels like to wake up with joy at your core because who you are is aligned." - Dr. Erin Baker. In today's episode, we are joined by the amazing Dr. Erin Baker, Executive Coach, Elite Certified Neurotransformational Coach, Internal Family Systems L2 Practitioner, and Self-Leadership Expert. Erin earned a PhD in Social Psychology and is the Bestselling Author of "Joy-Full AF: The Essential Business Strategy We're Afraid to Put First." They led a UX Research team at Facebook, were part of bringing Facebook Stories to 2 billion people, and were the Director of UX Research and Design at Microsoft Yammer. Throughout this episode, a true testament to the uniqueness of everyone's gender experience, Erin discusses the process of coming to terms with their nonbinary gender identity throughout adolescence and early adulthood. They also share some of the challenges they faced, especially at the beginning. And we learned a lot thanks to Erin's openness about their top surgery, which led to a greater feeling of alignment with their gender. It was also interesting to hear about Erin's experiences as a nonbinary person working for tech giants. Additionally, Erin talks about their book, the multiple benefits of pursuing joy, Self-Leadership Coaching, Internal Family Systems, and much more. On this episode of the Plastic Surgeon Podcast Dr. Sajan's patient, Kelli tells her story of growing up in rural Montana, coming out as a trans woman, and the difficulties and beauty in her transition. Kelli underwent facial feminization surgery with Dr. Sajan.Kelli grew up in a small town of just 111 people in Montana. From the age of 5, she always identified more with her sisters and a feminine identity. Privately, her family embraced this, but publicly, she had to continue to present as a boy.In high school, Kelli came out as bisexual and gay as a way to present more femininely. This cost her a sports career and led to bullying and mental health struggles. By college though, Kelli learned about transgenderism and began to openly identify as a trans woman.Kelli's surgery was unique. Many other surgeons she consulted with did not want to do the procedure as she wanted it. After coming to Dr. Sajan who helped her customize her FFS procedure, Kelli knew he was the right surgeon. She loves her results and could not be happier with her new face and the outlook it has given her.Listen to Kelli's story of identifying as LGBTQ in rural America and her unique transition story on the newest episode of the Plastic Surgeon Podcast with Dr. Javad Sajan.Subscribe to the Plastic Surgeon Podcast for more plastic surgery stories from real patients and providers. On this episode of the Plastic Surgeon Podcast Dr. Sajan's patient, Liam. Liam is a transgender man who underwent top surgery with Dr. Sajan at Allure Esthetic earlier this year. Liam was born and spent his early life in the Dominican Republic. It was not until he attended high school in the United States that he began to have the language for his identity and the feelings he had growing up.During childhood, Liam experienced feelings of gender dysphoria. He never liked wearing traditional girls' clothing and expressed an interest in girls instead of boys early on. Seeing boys, Liam realized that he wanted to look like and be like them. He even enjoyed when he would be misgendered before he transitioned because it better matched his true identity. After moving to Washington and attending school, Liam witnessed fellow students come out as transgender and transition. This gave him the language to understand how he was feeling and his true gender identity. Liam did not formally come out until 2020, despite having these feelings all of his life. Listen to the story of Liam's incredible journey on the newest episode (and season!) of the Plastic Surgeon Podcast with Dr. Javad Sajan.Subscribe to the Plastic Surgeon Podcast for more plastic surgery stories from real patients and providers.
